Understanding Brazil’S Oil Industry: Policy Dynamics And Self-Sufficiency, Erjia Joy Guan Nov 2010

Understanding Brazil’S Oil Industry: Policy Dynamics And Self-Sufficiency, Erjia Joy Guan

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

This paper focuses on the premise that despite changes in the type of Brazil’s governmental leadership—and their respective political priorities and economic policies—the nation has engaged in a continual movement toward the fulfillment of its vision of self-sufficiency in oil, for the purposes of economic development as well as those of national security. After attaining self-sufficiency in oil in 2006, new offshore discoveries beginning in 2007 have placed Brazil among the world’s top ten countries in oil reserves. In light of these discoveries, the Brazilian government is considering a new legal framework with respect to its offshore oil reserves. This …

Cross-Sectional And Longitudinal Associations Of Neighborhood Characteristics With Inflammatory Markers: Findings From The Multi-Ethnic Study Of Atherosclerosis, Aydin Nazmi, Ana Diez Roux, Nalini Ranjit, Teresa E. Seeman, Nancy S. Jenny Nov 2010

Cross-Sectional And Longitudinal Associations Of Neighborhood Characteristics With Inflammatory Markers: Findings From The Multi-Ethnic Study Of Atherosclerosis, Aydin Nazmi, Ana Diez Roux, Nalini Ranjit, Teresa E. Seeman, Nancy S. Jenny

Food Science and Nutrition

We investigated cross-sectional associations of neighborhood deprivation, problems, safety, and cohesion with circulating levels of fibrinogen, interleukin-6, and C-reactive protein (n=5370) and longitudinal associations with changes in IL-6 over a 3–4 year period (n=946). In cross-sectional analyses, higher levels of neighborhood deprivation and problems were associated with higher levels of all three inflammatory markers, whereas higher levels of safety were associated with lower levels. Fibrinogen remained associated with all neighborhood characteristics except cohesion and IL-6 remained associated with safety after adjustment for race and SES. In longitudinal analyses, higher levels of neighborhood deprivation and problems, and lower levels of safety …

A Privileged Past

"A Privileged Past" closes with the author’s reflections concerning globalization’s impact on recent social conditions in the US and its collective memory, especially as they apply to higher education. Thanks to the new technologies of communication and transportation, communities of belief and identity are more extensive geographically but also more diffused temporally. As a consequence, everyone of good will, collaboratively and collectively, must work harder to establish relations beyond personal, ethnic, and national boundaries.

Achieving Middle-Income Status By 2030: Is This The Most Appropriate Objective For Zambia?, Venkatesh Seshamani

Zambia Social Science Journal

On the backdrop of three important quotes and based on a wealth of underlying research, this article presents a systematic review of growth and development measurement in general and specifically in relation to Zambia’s prospects of achieving middle income status by 2030. It highlights what it takes to achieve middle income status and what the limitations of such ambitions are. In commenting about Zambia’s prospects, the article presents detailed cross-country comparisons with selected African economies. Attention is paid to aspects of economic (income) growth, human development and true human progress, using a range of international indicators in the analysis. Ultimately …

Mugabe’S Zimbabwe, 2000–2009: Massive Human Rights Violations And The Failure To Protect, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article reviews human rights violations in Zimbabwe from 2000 to 2009, under the rule of Robert Mugabe. It argues that these violations, including state-induced famine, illegal mass expulsions, and systemic rape, constituted crimes against humanity. This article considers what African regional organizations, including the African Union and the Southern African Development Community, and various organs of the international community did, and might have done, to restrain Mugabe and his inner circle from committing these violations. It concludes that the lack of forceful action by African and international organizations constituted a failure to protect the people of Zimbabwe.

Egf Receptor Kinase Activity Is Required For Gap Junction Closure And For Part Of The Decrease In Ovarian Follicle Cgmp In Response To Luteinizing Hormone, Rachael P. Norris, Marina Freudzon, Viacheslav O. Nikolaev, Laurinda A. Jaffe

UCHC Articles - Research

The meiotic cell cycle in mouse oocytes is arrested in prophase, and then restarted when luteinizing hormone (LH) acts on the surrounding granulosa cells. The granulosa cells keep meiosis arrested by providing a source of cGMP that diffuses into the oocyte through gap junctions, and LH restarts the cell cycle by closing the junctions and by decreasing granulosa cell cGMP, thus lowering oocyte cGMP. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activation is an essential step in triggering LH-induced meiotic resumption, but its relationship to the cGMP decrease in the follicle is incompletely understood, and its possible function in causing gap junction …

Mhc Class I And Tcr Avidity Control The Cd8 T Cell Response To Il-15/Il-15rα Complex, Thomas A. Stoklasek, Sara L. Colpitts, Henry M. Smilowitz, Leo Lefrançois

UCHC Articles - Research

IL-15 operates via a unique mechanism termed transpresentation. In this system, IL-15 produced by one cell type is bound to IL-15Rα expressed by the same cell and is presented to apposing cells expressing the IL-15Rβ/γC complex. We have shown that administering soluble IL-15Rα complexed with IL-15 can greatly enhance IL-15 activity. We now show that the naive CD8 T cell response to exogenous IL-15/IL-15Rα complex is MHC class I dependent. In the absence of β2 microglobulin, naive CD8 T cells scarcely proliferated in response to IL-15/IL-15Rα complex, whereas memory cells proliferated, although to a lesser extent, compared with levels in …

Erlotinib Added To Carboplatin And Paclitaxel As First-Line Treatment Of Ovarian Cancer: A Phase Ii Study Based On Surgical Reassessment, Carolyn D. Runowicz

UCHC Articles - Research

Background

The purpose of this study was to determine whether adding the anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor erlotinib to carboplatin/paclitaxel improved pathologic complete response (pCR) at reassessment surgery in epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancers (OFPC).

Methods

Patients with stage III-IV OFPC initiated treatment within 12 weeks of initial cytoreductive surgery or, after histologic confirmation of diagnosis, neoadjuvantly. Treatment included paclitaxel (175 mg/m2) and carboplatin (AUC 6) every 3 weeks for up to 6 cycles, plus oral erlotinib 150 mg daily. The primary objective was to determine whether the pCR rate at reassessment …

In the field of cortical cellular physiology, much effort has been invested in understanding thick apical drites of pyramidal neurons and the regenerative sodium and calcium spikes that take place in the apical trunk. Here we focus on thin dendrites of pyramidal cells (basal, oblique, and tuft dendrites), and we discuss one relatively novel form of an electrical signal (“NMDA spike”) that is specific for these branches. Basal, oblique, and apical tuft dendrites receive a high density of glutamatergic synaptic contacts. Synchronous activation of 10–50 neighboring glutamatergic synapses triggers a local dendritic regenerative potential, NMDA spike/plateau, which is characterized by …
