Energy Reduction In Automotive Paint Shops A Review Of Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Battery Manufacturing, Claudia Patricia Arenas Guerrero
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Automotive industry is facing fundamental challenges due to the rapid depletion of fossil fuels, energy saving and environmental concerns. The need of sustainable energy development has motivated the research of energy reduction and renewable energy sources. Efficient use of energy in vehicle manufacturing is demanded, as well as an alternative energy source to replace gasoline powered engines. In this thesis, we introduce a case study at an automotive paint shop, where the largest amount of energy consumption of an automotive assembly plant takes place. Additionally, we present a summary of recent advances in the area of hybrid and electrical vehicles …

Rehabilitating Mental Disorder Evidence After Clark C. Arizona: Of Burdens, Presumptions, And The Rights To Raise Reasonable Doubt, Dora W. Klein
Faculty Articles
The right not to be found guilty of a crime absent proof beyond a reasonable doubt is a powerful right. It can be undermined, however, by rules that at first seem to have little to do with reasonable doubt or with burdens of proof.
In the recent case of Clark v. Arizona, the Supreme Court considered whether states may enact rules that categorically prohibit criminal defendants from offering mental disorder evidence for the purpose of raising reasonable doubt regarding the mens rea element of a charged offense. In Arizona law, mental disorder evidence is inadmissible for the purpose of disproving …
Sources Of Entrepreneurial Discretion In Kinship Systems, Alex Stewart
Sources Of Entrepreneurial Discretion In Kinship Systems, Alex Stewart
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Entrepreneurs may wish to be selective about which relatives to include or exclude in their businesses. For example, their child might be inept but their niece might be outstanding. What aspects of kinship systems affect their ability to make these sorts of choices? What enables them to bend their ties of kinship and marriage to the interests of their business? Most broadly, what dimensions of kinship lend themselves to tactical or instrumental actions? This question is sweeping just as my meaning of “entrepreneurs” is very broad: those who take actions with the goal of growing their capital (Stewart, 1991). This …
Irrelevent Confusion, Mark P. Mckenna, Mark A. Lemley
Irrelevent Confusion, Mark P. Mckenna, Mark A. Lemley
Journal Articles
Trademark law centers its analysis on consumer confusion. With some significant exceptions, the basic rule of trademark law is that a defendant’s use of a mark is illegal if it confuses a substantial number of consumers and not otherwise.
As a general matter, this is the right rule. Trademark law is designed to facilitate the workings of modern markets by permitting producers to accurately communicate information about the quality of their products to buyers, and therefore to encourage them to invest in making quality products in circumstances in which that quality wouldn’t otherwise be apparent. If competitors can falsely mimic …
Affordable Private Education And The Middle Class City, Nicole Stelle Garnett
Affordable Private Education And The Middle Class City, Nicole Stelle Garnett
Journal Articles
This Essay, which was prepared for a University of Chicago Law School’s symposium on “Rethinking the Local Government Toolkit,” argues that affordable private schools serve an important urban-development function: They partially unbundle the residential and educational decisions of families with children. Thus, state and local officials hoping to make our make central city neighborhoods attractive places to raise children should consider employing a familiar urban development tool - tax incentives - to make quality private schools more financially accessible to middle-income families. The Essay proceeds in three parts. Part I builds the case for a middle class city. Part II …

Dimethylmercury Production In Freshwater Sediments, David C. Kelly
Dimethylmercury Production In Freshwater Sediments, David C. Kelly
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Dimethylmercury (DMHg) has been examined almost exclusively in marine environments to date, plays an uncertain role in the global cycling of Hg, and is produced by a currently unknown mechanism in natural systems. We examined DMHg production in microcosms containing 100 cm3 of freshwater sediment sampled from 3 wetlands and a lake near Dayton, Ohio. DMHg was produced from all sediments analyzed, and found that production is increased significantly by the addition of inorganic Hg from ~0.1pM to ~10pM, its production is unaffected by autoclaving the sediment, and organic carbon additions had no discernible effect on production. Its total concentrations …

In-Vitro Metabolism And Protein Binding Of 5-Hmf, A Potential Antisickling Agent, Taghrid Obied
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose. 5-HMF is a potential antisickling agent forming a Schiff-adduct with hemoglobin (Hb). In-vitro studies were designed to identify the metabolic pathways of 5-HMF in human hepatic cytosol, to assess inter-species differences in its hepatic metabolism, and to predict in-vivo PK properties. Moreover, metabolism of 5-HMF in human RBCs was investigated. Finally, in-vitro studies were done to characterize 5-HMF binding kinetics with human Hb and albumin (HSA). Methods. NAD+ reduction was monitored at 340 nm in human hepatic cytosol for 5-HMF (26 mM) and prototypical ADH and ALDH substrates in the presence or absence of their inhibitors. Furthermore, concentration-dependency studies …

2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), a disrupter, of B-cell differentiation, induces binding of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) nuclear complex to dioxin responsive elements (DRE) within the mouse immunoglobulin heavy chain regulatory region (3'IgHRR), and produces a marked inhibition of 3'IgHRR activation, IgH expression, and antibody secretion in a well-characterized mouse B-cell line (CH12.LX). The mouse 3'IgHRR consists of at least four enhancers (hs3a; hs1,2; hs3b; hs4), and is highly homologous with the three enhancers (hs3; hs1,2; hs4) of the human 3'IgHRR. A polymorphism of the human hs1,2 enhancer (resulting in varying numbers of tandem repeats containing a DRE and κB site) has …
The Role Of Apoptosis In Hela Cells Expressing Hiv-1 Rev, Elizabeth Page
The Role Of Apoptosis In Hela Cells Expressing Hiv-1 Rev, Elizabeth Page
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The HIV protein Rev is a nucleolar protein that regulates late gene expression in infected cells by promoting the export of under-spliced viral RNAs (Pollard and Malim, 1998). Its over-expression can also inhibit progression through mitosis (Miyazaki et al., 1995), possibly through its ability to depolymerize microtubules (Watts et al., 2000). Consequently, Rev may activate the spindle assembly checkpoint in mitotic cells and increase the frequency of apoptosis. Rev also binds the nucleolar protein B23 involved in ribosome maturation and centrosome duplication. Because loss of B23 function stimulates apoptosis (Ahn et al., 2005), Rev expression may promote apoptosis by inhibiting …

Corticosterone is a glucocorticoid released as part of the body's response to stress and is known to affect cognitive function, presumably via effects on the hippocampus. Trace classical eyeblink conditioning depends on the hippocampus, and has been used to examine the development of learning processes in young organisms. Experiment 1 was a dosing study, in which time course of effect of corticosterone was followed in 15-day-old Long-Evans rat pups over 24 hours for 4 different concentrations (high: 0.02 mg/g body weight (b.w.), medium: 0.01mg/g b.w., low: 0.005 mg/g b.w. and a vehicle control). In Experiment 2, two subcutaneous injections (0.02 …

Developmental Expression Of Calcium Buffering Proteins In Central Auditory Pathways Of Normal Hearing And Congenitally Deaf Mice, Adam S. Deardorff
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
These experiments analyze differences in synaptic development in central auditory pathways between normal hearing (CBA/J) and congenitally deaf (dn/dn) mice, which provide valuable insight into central synaptic plasticity corresponding to human congenital deafness. Immunofluorescent analysis of the developmental expression of the calcium buffering proteins calretinin, calbindin d-28k, and parvalbumin at various postnatal time points was performed to assess the effects of altered neural activity on the level and/or pattern of protein expression within these nuclei. Results indicate that the pattern of calbindin and parvalbumin is unaffected by congenital deafness in dn/dn mice. However, the pattern of calretinin expression in the …

Organophosphate (OP) nerve agents such as sarin, soman, tabun, and O-ethyl S-[2-(diisopropylamino) ethyl] methylphosphonothioate (VX) do not react solely with acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Evidence suggests that a wide range of cholinergic-independent pathways are also targeted, including serine proteases. These proteases comprise nearly one-third of all known proteases and play major roles in synaptic plasticity, learning, memory, neuroprotection, wound healing, cell signaling, inflammation, blood coagulation and protein processing. Inhibition of these proteases by OPs was found to exert a wide range of noncholinergic effects depending on the type of OP, the dose, and the duration of exposure. Consequently, in order to understand …

Skin cancers, such as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), develop from accumulated mutations as a result of excessive exposure to Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Intriguingly, UVB also catalyzes the synthesis of 1alpha, 25-dihydroxy Vitamin D3 (VD3), the hormonally active form of Vitamin D. Downstream VD3 signaling has been associated with promoting the inhibition of cell cycle progression, regulating calcium homeostasis, and inducing differentiation and apoptosis. VD3 mediates these processes via genomic mechanisms through interaction with its cognate receptor, the Vitamin D Receptor, (VDR). In addition, it was recently discovered that VD3 reduces UVB-mediated phosphorylation of the SAPK/c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), which …

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is the toxic form of mercury (Hg) that biomagnifies in food webs, and human exposure to MMHg occurs predominantly via consumption of fish. The primary source of MMHg to the marine environment is thought to be in situ sedimentary production by benthic microorganisms, namely sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). I collected sediments from the continental shelf (stations 2 and 6) and slope (station 9) of the NW Atlantic Ocean, and amended them with various inhibitor and promoter solutions to target specific functional groups capable of Hg transformations. I also added stable enriched Hg isotopes to quantify gross Hg methylation and …

In Carbon Monoxide (CO) induced Delayed Neurological Sequelae (DNS) clinical signs develop 1 to 6 weeks after CO has cleared the body. The aim of this experiment was to develop a model of CO induced DNS which closely mimics "real world" conditions both in exposure and treatment. The model was challenged with hyperbaric or normobaric oxygen, or room air. Basic behaviors were measured by Open Field test on days 1, 7, 14 post exposure and treatment. No significant difference in behavior was observed between exposed and control animals or between treatment groups. Histological analyses showed no DNA or necrotic damage …

This thesis investigates how people displaced from the construction of large dams in seek environmental justice. I studied the importance of regime type, the creation of protest groups and the formation of alliances with national, international organizations, and the media. In a comparison between protest movements against the Three Gorges Dam in China and the Sardar Sarovar Dam in India, displaced populations suffered from loss of community, livelihood, and health and were victimized by corrupt actors that supported the dams. The rapid economic development of these two countries emerged as a major point of comparison between the two. Regime type …

The increased demand for high resolution satellite imagery for government, military, and commercial applications is driving the need for high data rate, millimeter-wave transmission systems to relay imagery information to a ground-based end user. An important aspect of this system which interfaces digital information to the RF domain is the modulator driver. The current trend in miniaturization of electronics leaves systems more vulnerable to single-event radiation effects in spaceborne applications. In an effort to overcome this deficiency, a wideband, high data rate modulator driver circuit has been designed, built, and tested using only high reliability space rated electronic components. To …

The project looks at violence as a social norm during the French massacres of 1572, causing widespread violence at a popular level, at the heart of which was religious group identity. The work examines outbreaks of fighting between Catholics and Huguenots starting in Paris with the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre and spreading to provincial cities in the following months. Rather than viewing hostility as instigated from the top levels of society, this works aims to verify that there existed within France an acceptance of aggression that, encouraged by inflammatory religious rhetoric, resulted in the popular violence of the massacres. Cycling of mercury (Hg) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) in forest ecosystems can affect exposures of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife within the watershed. Litterfall has been posited to be a major source of MMHg and total Hg to the forest floor; however, the origin of MMHg associated with tree foliage is largely unknown. I tested the hypothesis that leaf MMHg would be controlled by root uptake and thereby proportional to levels in soil. Fresh leaves and associated soil samples were sampled from nine tree species (deciduous and coniferous) at 30 locations spanning a 1145 km2 area in southwest Ohio, a region presumed …
