The Handling Of Missing Data In Molecular Epidemiologic Studies, Manisha Desai, Jessica Kubo, Denise Esserman, Mary Beth Terry Nov 2010

The Handling Of Missing Data In Molecular Epidemiologic Studies, Manisha Desai, Jessica Kubo, Denise Esserman, Mary Beth Terry

COBRA Preprint Series

Background: Molecular epidemiologic studies face a missing data problem as biospecimen data are often collected on only a proportion of subjects eligible for study.

Methods: We investigated all molecular epidemiologic studies published in CEBP in 2009 to characterize the prevalence of missing data and to elucidate how the issue was addressed. We considered multiple imputation (MI), a missing data technique that is readily available and easy to implement, as a possible solution.

Results: While the majority of studies had missing data, only 16% compared subjects with and without missing data. Furthermore, 95% of the studies with missing data performed a …

The Use Of Multiple Imputation In Molecular Epidemiologic Studies Assessing Interaction Effects, Manisha Desai, Denise Esserman, Marilie Gammon, Mary Beth Terry Nov 2010

The Use Of Multiple Imputation In Molecular Epidemiologic Studies Assessing Interaction Effects, Manisha Desai, Denise Esserman, Marilie Gammon, Mary Beth Terry

COBRA Preprint Series

Background: In molecular epidemiologic studies biospecimen data are collected on only a proportion of subjects eligible for study. This leads to a missing data problem. Missing data methods, however, are not typically incorporated into analyses. Instead, complete-case (CC) analyses are performed, which result in biased and inefficient estimates.

Methods: Through simulations, we characterized the bias that results from CC methods when interaction effects are estimated, as this is a major aim of many molecular epidemiologic studies. We also investigated whether standard multiple imputation (MI) could improve estimation over CC methods when the data are not missing at random (NMAR) and …

Asian Americans And Cultural Values : Encountering And Overcoming Sociocultural Barriers To Community Mental Health Services : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, William Lee

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explored the narrative experience of Asian American/Pacific Islanders (AA/PIs), who have received or are currently receiving community mental health services. This study was an attempt to illuminate their experience of encountering and overcoming socio-cultural barriers to these services. Historic underutilization of mental health services among AA/PI communities motivated the need to explore what cultural and/or institutional factors reduce barriers to services. Four AA/PIs, with an average length of 7.25 years in treatment, were recruited from a community mental health agency in San Francisco, CA. They participated in 45- minute to one hour semi-structured interviews discussing their experience …

The Impact Of The Patient Protection And Affordable Health Care Act Of 2010 On State Workers’ Compensation Systems, Thomas A. Eaton Nov 2010

The Impact Of The Patient Protection And Affordable Health Care Act Of 2010 On State Workers’ Compensation Systems, Thomas A. Eaton

Presentations and Speeches

The relationship between national health care reform and workers’ compensation is not a new issue. Whenever there is a serious discussion about some form of national involvement in the delivery or financing of general health care, the question arises: how does workers’ compensation fit in to this plan? The question is a logical one for state workers’ compensation and federal health care reform share a number of common concerns. Both strive to provide meaningful access to care; both aim to stem the tide of rising costs; and each is concerned about how to coordinate with the other. But, the devil …

Contemplative Practice, Internal Family Systems And Affect Regulation : An Exploratory Study : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Jessica Jeanne Prodis

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory study was undertaken to investigate the ways that contemplative practices across varied traditions may aid practitioners in the development of tools for emotional containment and regulation. The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of psychotherapy (Schwartz, 1995) was used as a theoretical framework for this study. Findings were compared to the ways that affect regulation and containment are conceptualized within the IFS model. Eleven subjects who identified as utilizing contemplative practices from various traditions participated in this study. Interview questions were designed to explore the ways that engagement in a daily contemplative practice for five or more years had …

Feasibility Study Of A Novel Method For Real-Time Aerodynamic Coefficient Estimation, Phillip Gurbacki Nov 2010

Feasibility Study Of A Novel Method For Real-Time Aerodynamic Coefficient Estimation, Phillip Gurbacki

Theses

In this work, a feasibility study of a novel technique for the real-time identification of uncertain nonlinear aircraft aerodynamic coefficients has been conducted. The major objective of this paper is to investigate the feasability of a system for parameter identification in a real-time flight environment. This system should be able to calculate aerodynamic coefficients and derivative information using typical pilot inputs while ensuring robust, stable, and rapid convergence. The parameter estimator investigated is based upon the nonlinear sliding mode control schema; one of the main advantages of the sliding mode estimator is the ability to guarantee a stable and robust …

The Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Drugome And Its Polypharmacological Implications, Sarah L. Kinnings, Li Xie, Kingston H. Fung, Richard M. Jackson, Lei Xie, Phillip E. Bourne Nov 2010

The Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Drugome And Its Polypharmacological Implications, Sarah L. Kinnings, Li Xie, Kingston H. Fung, Richard M. Jackson, Lei Xie, Phillip E. Bourne

Publications and Research

We report a computational approach that integrates structural bioinformatics, molecular modelling and systems biology to construct a drug-target network on a structural proteome-wide scale. The approach has been applied to the genome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), the causative agent of one of today’s most widely spread infectious diseases. The resulting drug-target interaction network for all structurally characterized approved drugs bound to putative M.tb receptors, we refer to as the ‘TB-drugome’. The TB-drugome reveals that approximately one-third of the drugs examined have the potential to be repositioned to treat tuberculosis and that many currently unexploited M.tb receptors may be chemically druggable …

Assessment Of “Community Stepping Stones,” A Community-Based Youth Art Education Program, Jennifer E. A. Pedraza

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Community Stepping Stones is an art education program whose objective is to

“provide education, mentor children and adolescents, enhance the community

economics, and enrich the quality of life in the community” (Community Steppping

Stones [CSS], 2009a). Community art education programs, particularly for youth, have

become increasingly popular as a way to address and prevent delinquent behavior.

However, art education programs have proven challenging to evaluate and sustain.

The goal of my thesis was to explore how Community Stepping Stones

implemented and evaluated a community-based youth arts education program

compared to other, similar programs and how the organization could make the …
