The Effects Of Oil Shocks On The Us Economy, David Jaliman Jan 2010

The Effects Of Oil Shocks On The Us Economy, David Jaliman

Theses & ETDs

This thesis sets out to examine the impact of oil shocks and oil volatility on the US business cycle. Through the use of both a GARCH (1,1) combined with an AR (2) model and a VAR model. The results from these models indicate that oil shocks cause a small, but statistically significant impact on GDP. Oil shocks can adversely affect U.S. economic growth. Additionally, the VAR model also showed oil shocks causing a slight increase in both the unemployment level and the consumer price index. While the models demonstrate the effects oil shocks can have on the economy, they are …

Progressive Bullying How Unilateral Actions Could Help International Fisheries, Jack Mewhirter Jan 2010

Progressive Bullying How Unilateral Actions Could Help International Fisheries, Jack Mewhirter

Theses & ETDs

As the governing bodies of international fisheries, Regional Fisheries Management Organizations have largely failed to protect key stocks. This failure has led to unsustainable harvests that threaten the future of several key fisheries. Although many studies have focused on alleviating their inadequacy through institutional or policy changes, they have often ignored the underlying problem: cooperation among member states. Through an examination of the key variables for cooperation as applied to international fisheries, this thesis demonstrates that attaining legitimate cooperation between member states may not be possible through multilateral governance. Because multilateral governance may not be possible, unilateral actions by key …

Collecting Stories Oral History And Community Engagement In Urban Redevelopment, Ryann Wolf Jan 2010

Collecting Stories Oral History And Community Engagement In Urban Redevelopment, Ryann Wolf

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the ways that oral history can be used as a tool for both planning professionals and community members in urban redevlopment. Oral histories can allow planners, architects, and developers to see how people use urban spaces in their daily lives. Second, oral histories are useful in that they can help to build a sense of identity that is situated in place and the history of a place. Learning the history of the place where one lives can help to build a sense of pride and involvement in the process of redevelopment. The first section of the thesis …

Creative Control An Explanation Of Species-Specific Enrichment In Mongoose Lemurs (Eulemur Mongoz) And Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Hannah Brown Jan 2010

Creative Control An Explanation Of Species-Specific Enrichment In Mongoose Lemurs (Eulemur Mongoz) And Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Hannah Brown

Theses & ETDs

Creative enrichment designed for a species, or even for a specific individual, can provide an animal with environmental stimulation that may lead to a whole array of benefits for the animal. Exposure to speciesspecific enrichment, or enrichment that is designed for the adaptations of a particular species, encourages naturalistic behaviors by providing cues that are more biologically salient than a more generalized enrichment item. This study explores the relationship between species-specific stimuli and the production of naturalistic behaviors. An acoustic enrichment device was presented to two captive mammalian groups: mongoose lemurs (Eulemur mongoz) and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Both species …

Impact Of Advanced Pretreatment On The Feasibility Of Uv/Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment For Degradation Of Organic Micropollutants, Ashlee L. Fuller

Master's Theses and Capstones

Research was performed to show the impact of several types of pretreatment at Water Treatment Plant, Andijk, on the Advanced Oxidation Process. The objective was to compare the effect of Ion Exchange with Ultra Filtration (IX-UF) pretreatment to the existing Coagulation, Sedimentation, Filtration (CSF) pretreatment on the effectiveness of the UV/H2O2 process. The micro-pollutants chosen for this study are NDMA, atrazine, 1,4-dioxane and bromacil.

Characterization of the water matrixes for the pretreated waters was completed to determine the impact of background absorption (DOC and nitrate) on micro pollutant degradation and OH· radical production. Collimated beam studies (MP UV) were performed …

Elucidating The Microbial Community Within A Trichloroethene Contaminated Competent Bedrock Aquifer Located At Pease International Tradeport, Portsmouth, Nh, Michelle M. Majko

Master's Theses and Capstones

A trichloroethene (TCE)-contaminated competent bedrock aquifer exists at Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth, NH. Characterization by the Bedrock Bioremediation Center (BBC) at the University of New Hampshire showed active in situ anaerobic degradation of TCE. Formation water from discrete, hydraulically connected fractures was extracted to characterize and enumerate the prevalent TCE biodegradation processes using Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Eubacteria (90%), Archaea (5%), and sulfate reducing bacteria within Desulfobacteriaceae (1--26%) were present at all depths (13--30 meters). Two probes targeting the anaerobic TCE-dechlorinating genus, Dehalococcoides (4--10%) were developed. FISH in combination with Flow Cytometry was employed to automate the analysis; …

Is A Communication Event Stressful For Individuals With Expressive Aphasia?, Emily E. Warner

Master's Theses and Capstones

Objective. This study presents an effort to understand both stress perception and physiologic responses related to expressive communication in individuals with expressive aphasia, acquired as the result of a stroke.

Method. Eight individuals with aphasia and five age-matched, healthy controls participated in a public communication task. Salivary cortisol and perception of stress and mood was measured on one day at home as well as during the ordering task.

Results. A significant difference between groups was found in diurnal cortisol levels in the evening, as well as a non-significant trend in the afternoon measure. Individuals in the aphasia group perceived higher …

Stream Temperature Impacts Of Culverts And Impervious Areas, Gary Lemay Jan 2010

Stream Temperature Impacts Of Culverts And Impervious Areas, Gary Lemay

Master's Theses and Capstones

Water temperature in small, headwater streams may reveal much about stream health. Yet, our understanding of stream temperature and its driving factors is limited compared to other water quality parameters. In addition to natural factors, research suggests that watershed urbanization may impact a stream's thermal regime. This research quantified culverts and impervious area's stream temperature impacts across coastal NH streams using experimental data and a deterministic temperature model. Impervious areas were found to increase streams' daily average temperatures, possibly accentuate storm temperature surges, but not diurnal temperature ranges. Road crossings were found to increase the variability of diurnal temperature ranges, …

The Influence Of The Coach-Athlete Relationship On Coaching Efficacy, Anna Magle Jan 2010

The Influence Of The Coach-Athlete Relationship On Coaching Efficacy, Anna Magle

Master's Theses and Capstones

Bandura's (1997) theory of self-efficacy which was extended by Feltz et al. (1999) models of coaching efficacy provided framework for examining the relationship between coaching-efficacy and the coach athlete relationship. This study examined the relationship between NCAA head coaches' coaching efficacy and their coach-athlete relationship. NCAA coaches (N=632) completed the Coaching Efficacy Scale (CES), and the Coach Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q). A canonical correlation between the subscales of the CES and the subscales of the CART-Q revealed that the subscales of coach-athlete relationship contributed significantly to the explanation of coaching efficacy. MANOVAs revealed significant differences in both CES as well …

Production Of Biodiesel From Microalgae, Nkongolo Mulumba Jan 2010

Production Of Biodiesel From Microalgae, Nkongolo Mulumba

Master's Theses and Capstones

Biodiesel production from microalgae is a promising technique, with advantages of high biomass yield with high lipid content. Challenges include effective techniques to harvest the grown microalgae, extraction of the algal oil and its transesterification to biodiesel. A microalgae strain was selected from 8 different species screened for growth rate and lipid content. A Tubular Photobioreactor was designed and constructed to study microalgae growth. Productivity of 1 g of dry algal biomass per liter of medium within 12 days was achieved, with lipid content up to 20 %. The observed 10 fold increase in biomass is higher than those reported …

The Experience Of Co-Instructing On Extended Wilderness Trips, Franklin Vernon Jan 2010

The Experience Of Co-Instructing On Extended Wilderness Trips, Franklin Vernon

Master's Theses and Capstones

Adventure education organizations use co-instruction as the dominant mode of staffing programs, largely for issues related to risk mitigation. Despite, or perhaps because of, the everyday nature of this common staffing arrangement, little attention has been paid to it. Moreover, a review of relevant literature on co-leadership from the human services, traditional education, and adventure education fields revealed little clear consensus regarding the nature of the co-instruction experience. This phenomenological study inquired into the experience of co-instructors through in-depth qualitative interviews, which were transcribed and inductively analyzed for emergent themes. Co-instructing, at its essence, emerged as a negotiated relationship between …

Evaluating Sampling-Induced Stress In Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua), Travis S. Ford Jan 2010

Evaluating Sampling-Induced Stress In Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua), Travis S. Ford

Master's Theses and Capstones

Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, have historically been regarded as one of the most commercially and recreationally important fishes in the Gulf of Maine. All fish involved in fishing and aquaculture are subject to stress, indicated by elevated plasma cortisol concentrations. Given the amount of research conducted on Atlantic cod, stress, and cortisol, little has been done to compare different blood sampling methods and the effects they might have on plasma cortisol concentrations, particularly in adult fish. This study examined three different methods of repeated blood sampling (standard handling caudal vessel puncture, reduced handling caudal vessel puncture, and cannulation) in Atlantic …

The Impact Of Sensory Stimuli On The Stress Response Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Noelle Schreiber Jan 2010

The Impact Of Sensory Stimuli On The Stress Response Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Noelle Schreiber

Master's Theses and Capstones

This is a multiple subject research study looking at children with ASD (N=8) and a control group (N=6). We looked at cortisol samples along with behavioral observations on a sensory probe and short sensory profile scores to determine differences among the groups. All children showed a change in cortisol over the course of the day however, there was no difference seen in patterns by group. There was a high likelihood based on statistical analysis that children with ASD respond negatively to at least five out of the eight sensory probe items. Short sensory profile scores also showed that there was …

Socially Prescribed Perfectionism And Limerence In Interpersonal Relationships, Robin M. Banker Jan 2010

Socially Prescribed Perfectionism And Limerence In Interpersonal Relationships, Robin M. Banker

Master's Theses and Capstones

Socially prescribed perfectionism, in which one perceives that others have unrealistic expectations for them, appears to have a strong correlation to maladaptive characteristics and interpersonal problems. Another concept with maladaptive features and relational difficulties is an unhealthy form of obsessional love, known as limerence. Limerence is defined as an involuntary cognitive and emotional state of intense romantic desire for another individual. The aim of this thesis is to examine the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and limerence. It is hypothesized that an association exists between socially prescribed perfectionism and limerence, specifically in intimate relationships. A theoretical comparison supported the hypothesis, …

Gender Bias In The Legal Field: Experiences Of Female Attorneys And Law Students, Jessie L. French Jan 2010

Gender Bias In The Legal Field: Experiences Of Female Attorneys And Law Students, Jessie L. French

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study examines the experiences of female attorneys and law students with respect to gender bias. Contemporary evaluations indicate that while women comprise approximately 50% of the job force, they are significantly underrepresented in management positions and continue to be paid less than men; this is especially true in the legal field. Thirty-five in-depth interviews were conducted, 25 with women who had obtained a juris doctorate and 10 with female law students. Women discussed their experiences in the legal field relative to law school, expectations for their careers, media influences, gender discrimination and harassment. Qualitative analysis revealed that pregnancy was …

Psychiatric Status, Self Control And Violence: Application Of The General Theory Of Crime, Feodor A. Gostjev Jan 2010

Psychiatric Status, Self Control And Violence: Application Of The General Theory Of Crime, Feodor A. Gostjev

Master's Theses and Capstones

Previous studies have suggested that psychiatric patients are more likely to be violent then the individuals in the general population. This thesis uses data collected in MacArthur Violence Risk Assessment Study to compare violent behaviors perpetrated by psychiatric patients in 10 weeks after their release from a psychiatric hospital and by subjects living in a similar community setting. Furthermore, Gottfredson and Hirschis's (1990) self control theory is applied to examine etiological causes of violence. The outcomes suggest that psychiatric patients were more likely to be violent during the study period than the community control subjects. The difference in violence rates …

Unconventional Mental Health Treatment: Reexamining The Racial Disparity In Treatment Seeking Behavior, Meghan L. Mills Jan 2010

Unconventional Mental Health Treatment: Reexamining The Racial Disparity In Treatment Seeking Behavior, Meghan L. Mills

Master's Theses and Capstones

Using 2005-2007 pooled data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), this thesis examines how race affects the type of mental health treatment ught by adults. This research examines whether a more inclusive definition of mental health treatment that incorporates unconventional mental health treatment may partially account for this disparity in treatment seeking behavior. Specifically, by including and differentiating between "formal" and "informal" complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as types of unconventional mental health treatment, it was hypothesized that the greater use of "informal" CAM (i.e. seeking help from a religious or spiritual advisor or friend or …

Asset Forfeiture: State Restrictions And Equitable Sharing, Charles Kucher Jan 2010

Asset Forfeiture: State Restrictions And Equitable Sharing, Charles Kucher

Master's Theses and Capstones

Civil asset forfeiture is criticized for its lack of procedural protections for property owners and for skewing the priorities of law enforcement. Federal civil forfeiture law allows federal agencies to prosecute civil forfeiture cases for state and local law enforcement agencies, a practice that is criticized for allowing the circumvention of state laws. This thesis looks at three factors governing forfeiture at the state level (standard of proof, conviction requirement and financial incentive) and examines their effect on federal equitable sharing payments. The results indicate that both conviction requirement and standard of proof affect equitable sharing payments and suggests that …
