Abstract
Background
Suicide officially kills approximately 30,000 annually in the United States. Analysis of this leading public health problem is complicated by undercounting. Despite persisting socioeconomic and health disparities, non-Hispanic Blacks and Hispanics register suicide rates less than half that of non-Hispanic Whites.
Methods
This cross-sectional study uses multiple cause-of-death data from the US National Center for Health Statistics to assess whether race/ethnicity, psychiatric comorbidity documentation, and other decedent characteristics were associated with differential potential for suicide misclassification. Subjects were 105,946 White, Black, and Hispanic residents aged 15 years and older, dying in the US between 2003 and 2005, whose …
Evaluation Of The Current Knowledge, Attitude And Perception Of End-Of-Life Electronics Among Students Of Selected North Carolina Universities Located In Guilford County, Bethany L. Clark
Theses
The purpose of the present study was to determine how much the general student population understands about the dangers and lost value that result from not properly recycling end-of-life (EOL) electronic devices. It was believed that changing the language associated with EOL electronics would, in turn, change the disposal practices of the general student population. College students at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T SU) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) were chosen for this study because college students are a large group of electronic device consumers and because they are the next generation …

Genetic And Evolutionary Feature Selection And Weighting For Face Recognition, Tamirat Abegaz
Theses
In this thesis, we have Investigated the hybridization of genetic-based feature selection (GEFeS), genetic-based feature weighting (GEFeW) and LBP-based face recognition techniques. The results indicate that feature selection and weighting enhances the overall performance of LBP-based face recognition techniques. In addition, the results show that GEFeS reduces the number of features needed by approximately 50% while obtaining significant improvement in the accuracy. GEFeS improves the accuracy from 70.36 to 96.62 (in the case of LBP-GEFeS) and from 70.71 to 96.43 (in the case of oLBP-GEFeS) respectively.
Antimicrobial Activity Of Copper Alone Or In Combination With Lactic Acid On The Growth Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Laboratory Medium And On The Surface Of Lettuce And Tomatoes, Rabin Gyawali
Theses
In recent years, Escherichia coli O157:H7 has been a major foodborne pathogen associated with fresh produce. Many outbreaks of foodborne illnesses have raised concerns in the microbial safety of fresh produce. Several different treatment solutions are being used to decontaminate fresh produce, but still it is very difficult to guarantee the microbiological safety. Therefore, the development of effective treatment for reducing E. coli O157:H7 on fresh produce is needed. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of copper alone or in combination with lactic acid on the survival and growth of E. coli O157:H7 in laboratory medium …

Ciliated cells were demonstrated to be predominant in the fimbria and ampulla, whereas secretory cells were determined to be most …
Comparative Studies On The Sensitivity Of Polymerase Chain Reaction (Pcr) And Microscopic Examination For The Detection Of Trypanosoma Evansi In Horses, M.A. Muieed, Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, A. R. Shakoori
Comparative Studies On The Sensitivity Of Polymerase Chain Reaction (Pcr) And Microscopic Examination For The Detection Of Trypanosoma Evansi In Horses, M.A. Muieed, Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, A. R. Shakoori
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The lack of reliable diagnostic methods is a setback in the effective control of diseases. Diagnosis of Trypanosoma evansi infection (surra) in livestock is of considerable economic importance. Detection of trypanosomes in blood has been the "gold standard"; however, finding the organisms or establishing patency of parasitaemia has not always been possible even in symptomatic infections. As a consequence of low dose infection, the pre-patent period in Trypanosoma evansi may be longer and, even when symptoms have developed, trypanosomes may still not be demonstrable in blood, thus delaying treatment and thereby increasing morbidity and mortality. Trypanosoma evansi, a protozoan parasite …

Social Interaction In Pain: Reinforcing Pain Behaviours Or Building Intimacy?, Annmarie Cano, A. C. De C. Williams
Psychology Faculty Research Publications
To date, pain research has focused almost exclusively on operant models to interpret the function and predict the consequences of pain-related interaction in chronic pain couples. However, evidence suggests that intimacy models of interaction may provide additional and alternative explanations for pain interaction. Specifically, intimacy models conceptualize verbal complaints about pain-related distress as emotional disclosure, which the partner may validate or invalidate. This review compares and contrasts models of pain-related interaction in chronic pain couples, describes limitations of the existing research, and offers directions for future research drawing upon a social support framework.
Effect Of Exogenous Leptin On Thrombotic And Metabolic Profiles Of Fvb/B6 Lipodystrophic Mice, Hoda Chaouki Kadouh
Effect Of Exogenous Leptin On Thrombotic And Metabolic Profiles Of Fvb/B6 Lipodystrophic Mice, Hoda Chaouki Kadouh
Wayne State University Theses
Lipodystrophy caused by fat deficiency contributes to metabolic disease for which several treatment modalities have been implemented, with leptin therapy being the most effective to date. In addition to playing a role in energy homeostasis and metabolism, leptin was also shown to play a pro-thrombotic role in mice. This role was not examined in fatless mice, neither was thrombosis measured. The AZIP/F-1 (FVB) lipodystrophic mouse appeared to have a prolonged arterial occlusion time (p〈0.05) in a trial done in our lab, with clotting factors being normal. The present study was designed to observe the thrombotic and metabolic characteristics of fatless …

Advisor: Dr. Pamela VandeVord
Major: Biomedical Engineering
Degree: Masters of Science
Controlled expression of glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) can be integrated in the development of a system for repair of injured peripheral nerves. This delivery strategy was demonstrated via inducible GDNF from microencapsulated cells in barium alginate. The Schwann cell line RT4-D6P2T was initially modified utilizing an ecdysone-based stable transfection system to produce RT4-GDNF cells. During construct preparation, it was found that C6 cells (where GDNF cDNA was isolated) make three GDNF …
Does Disinhibition Mediate Alcohol Use And Risk Taking?, Brian J. Klassen
Does Disinhibition Mediate Alcohol Use And Risk Taking?, Brian J. Klassen
Wayne State University Theses
The relationship between alcohol use and risk-taking is well-documented in the psychological literature. Although this area has attracted an enormous amount of research and interest, the mechanisms that underlie this relationship are not well understood. A model whereby executive functioning (disinhibition, specifically) mediated the relationship between alcohol use and risk-taking/impulsivity was proposed and tested. Although alcohol use and self-reported impulsivity were related on a number of different measures, alcohol use was largely not related to disinhibition, nor was disinhibition related to impulsivity/risk-taking. Therefore, full-fledged tests of mediation could not be performed. Study limitations and directions for future research were also …

Generational Differences In Reaction To Negative Feedback, Abigail E.B. Reiss
Wayne State University Theses
Generational differences in the workplace have received a great deal of attention in the past few years. The present study examined the reactions of Generation Y, Generation X, and Baby Boomers after receiving negative feedback. The sample of both working adults and undergraduate students were asked to watch a video of an actor portraying a supervisor dealing with a problem. The participants were asked what they would do in the situation and then received negative feedback about their answers. After receiving the feedback the participants showed no difference in motivation levels or self-efficacy, however there were significant differences between Generation …

The Challenge Of Interpreting 'Wto-Plus' Provisions, Julia Ya Qin
The Challenge Of Interpreting 'Wto-Plus' Provisions, Julia Ya Qin
Law Faculty Research Publications
This paper seeks to address special interpretive issues raised by the China Accession Protocol, focusing on provisions that prescribe more stringent rules for China than generally applicable WTO disciplines. These ‘WTO-plus’ provisions have already been involved in several WTO disputes. In the light of these disputes, the paper analyzes the interpretive challenge presented by the Protocol and suggests that, to meet the challenge, WTO adjudicators need to embrace a more holistic and systemic interpretive approach. The paper then proposes three working principles that may help to interpret the WTO-plus provisions of the Protocol in a coherent and systematic manner.
Interstate Water Compacts And Climate Change Adaptation, Noah D. Hall
Interstate Water Compacts And Climate Change Adaptation, Noah D. Hall
Law Faculty Research Publications
Over 95% of the available surface freshwater resources in the United States are interstate in nature and governed by interstate water compacts. These interstate compacts vary tremendously in how they allocate and manage interstate waters. Until recently, the water resources governed by interstate compacts have been relatively stable and unaffected by drastic changes in long-term weather patterns. However, within the next few decades North America is expected to experience increased regional variability in precipitation and susceptibility to drought. This article first looks at these expected changes on a macro and regional level to evaluate the increased stress on water resources …

Neural And Humoral Control Of Regional Vascular Beds Via A1 Adenosine Receptors Located In The Nucleus Of The Solitary Tract, Joseph Martin Mcclure
Wayne State University Dissertations
Previous studies from our laboratory showed that activation of NTS A1 adenosine
receptors yields variable hemodynamic responses with prevailing pressor and iliac
vasoconstrictor responses. These responses are accompanied with differential
activation of regional sympathetic activity (adrenal>>renal≥lumbar) and inhibition of
baroreflex mechanisms at the level of the NTS. The variability of the hemodynamic
responses was a result of simultaneous Β-adrenergic vasodilation counteracted with
sympathetic and unknown humoral vasoconstriction. Among many potential
vasoconstrictors vasopressin, angiotensin II and circulating norepinephrine were
considered. Therefore, blood pressure and iliac vascular responses evoked by
selective stimulation of NTS A1 adenosine receptors (CPA 330 …

Towards An Understanding Of The Etiology Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: Identification Of Genes Implicated In Aaa Risk And Development, John Hunt Lillvis
Wayne State University Dissertations
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a common disease for which mechanisms of formation are still not well understood. Despite a strong genetic component to AAA risk, specific risk alleles are still largely unidentified. AAA is also a localized disease with a majority occurring in the infrarenal abdominal aorta and is six times more common than aneurysms of the thoracic aorta. To determine whether risk alleles are present in functional positional candidate genes. we: 1. performed a genetic association study using DNA from AAA cases and controls in ten candidate genes and 2. performed exon sequencing on three genes with evidence …

A Role For Lipid Rafts In Egfr Tki Resistance In Breast Cancer, Mary Elizabeth Irwin
A Role For Lipid Rafts In Egfr Tki Resistance In Breast Cancer, Mary Elizabeth Irwin
Wayne State University Dissertations
Breast cancer can be divided into genetic sub-types including luminal, HER2+, and basal-type. With the introduction of targeted therapies against estrogen receptor and HER2 receptor mortality rates of American women with breast cancer have declined. Unfortunately, basal-type breast cancers, which have the worst clinical outcome, do not express estrogen receptor or HER2, and as such, have no targeted therapeutic option. The epidermal growth factor receptor is an attractive target for therapeutics in basal-type breast cancer, as it is over-expressed in 60% of these cases. Also, over-expression of EGFR correlates with poor patient prognosis. Unfortunately, inhibitors of EGFR have shown little …
Molecular Modeling Of Energetic Materials And Chemical Warfare Agents, Nandhini Sokkalingam
Molecular Modeling Of Energetic Materials And Chemical Warfare Agents, Nandhini Sokkalingam
Wayne State University Dissertations
Contamination of military sites by energetic materials and chemical warfare agents is a growing problem. To avoid health hazards associated with these compounds, it is necessary to decontaminate or remediate the contaminated sites. Effective decontamination requires knowledge of environmental fate of contaminants and the appropriate remediation methodologies. While the fate of chemical warfare agents are well studied, the impact of certain energetic materials in the environment is relatively unknown. So the current focus is determining environmental fate of Insensitive Munitions (IM) which are energetic materials that have low shock sensitivity and high thermal stability and developing detection schemes for identifying …
The Guarantee Clause In The States: Structural Protections For Minority Rights And Necessary Limits On The Initiative Power, Anya J. Stein
The Guarantee Clause In The States: Structural Protections For Minority Rights And Necessary Limits On The Initiative Power, Anya J. Stein
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
This Note discusses the constitutional significance of the Guarantee Clause of Article IV, Section 4, which states that "[t]he United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union, a Republican Form of Government." For decades, the United States Supreme Court has held that the Guarantee Clause presents a nonjusticiable political question in the federal courts. Notwithstanding this federal doctrine, the Guarantee Clause remains justiciable in the state courts.
State ballot initiatives are vulnerable to uses that violate the Guarantee Clause's protection of the republican form of government. This Note presents a three-part argument. First, the Guarantee Clause provides critical …
Thirty-Five Years After Berkelman: Seeking A New Debate About Ability Grouping, Matt Chayt
Thirty-Five Years After Berkelman: Seeking A New Debate About Ability Grouping, Matt Chayt
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
In 1974, a suit filed by the parents of San Francisco children argued that the operation of a selective public school, Lowell High School, inherently violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. While the suit successfully changed Lowell's admissions policy with regard to gender, the plaintiffs' broader arguments were largely ignored.
This Note re-examines this suit, which challenged the educational practice known as "ability grouping." Integrating current Supreme Court jurisprudence about equal opportunity in education and other relevant case law, the Note argues for a new conversation, one expressly aimed at racial and economic justice, about contemporary ability …
