The Impact Of Self-Efficacy And Motivation Characteristics On The Academic Achievement Of Upward Bound Participants, Brenda Leigh Brown Dec 2010

The Impact Of Self-Efficacy And Motivation Characteristics On The Academic Achievement Of Upward Bound Participants, Brenda Leigh Brown

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of self-efficacy and motivation characteristics on the achievement of at-risk students. Seventy-nine Upward Bound program participants completed self-efficacy, motivation, and demographic questionnaires. The relationship between GPA and self-efficacy was significant, negative, and low in strength. High GPA was associated with high self-efficacy (as shown by lower numbers on the survey). Gender, length of time in the Upward Bound (UB) program, length of participation in the UB summer program, college sponsor (community or four-year college), self-efficacy characteristics, and motivation characteristics significantly predicted academic achievement as measured by GPA. The relationship between …

Examining The Effectiveness Of Dropout Prevention Practices And Their Implications For Intervention With Public School Students, Louisa Pollack Dec 2010

Examining The Effectiveness Of Dropout Prevention Practices And Their Implications For Intervention With Public School Students, Louisa Pollack

Dissertations

Schools face the dilemma of transforming both the trend of students dropping out of school and the associated negative socioeconomic outcomes into a positive path of persistence and school completion. Despite ongoing efforts of the federal and state government, as well as those of the local school districts, this problem continues to burden the educational system and society as a whole. The opinions of those with the experience of dropping out and returning to school are pertinent sources of information on educative practices that can help stem the dropout rate.

A survey was conducted to gather the opinions of students …

Vigabatrin-Induced Peripheral Visual Field Defects In Patients With Refractory Partial Epilepsy, Robert C. Sergott, Richard M. Bittman, Erin M. Christen, Stephen M. Sagar Dec 2010

Vigabatrin-Induced Peripheral Visual Field Defects In Patients With Refractory Partial Epilepsy, Robert C. Sergott, Richard M. Bittman, Erin M. Christen, Stephen M. Sagar

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Purpose:

Vigabatrin can cause retinopathy, resulting in bilateral visual field constriction. Previous analyses of results from a prospective, observational study assessing vigabatrin-induced visual field constriction (described below) employed a partially subjective interpretation of static perimetery. In an effort to affirm these previous findings through more objective, quantitative methodology, we now report data from a subset analysis of refractory partial epilepsy patients in the study who underwent Goldmann kinetic perimetry.

Methods:

Patients aged ≥8 years with refractory partial seizures were enrolled and grouped: those receiving vigabatrin for ≥6 months (Group I); those who had received vigabatrin for ≥6 months and then …

The Objects Of The Whites: Commodities And Consumerism Among The Xikrin-Kayapó (Mebengokre) Of Amazonia, Cesar Gordon Dec 2010

The Objects Of The Whites: Commodities And Consumerism Among The Xikrin-Kayapó (Mebengokre) Of Amazonia, Cesar Gordon

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In this paper I discuss the recent phenomenon of conspicuous and increasing consumption of goods among the Xikrin-Kayapó (Mebengokre) of Pará, Brazil. Money and goods have become embedded in every domain of Xikrin life, including kinship, economy, politics and ritual. Merchandise can now be seen as a total social fact in Xikrin‑Kayapó society. I show that this sort of consumerism results from a complex interaction between general principles of Mebengokre sociocosmology and the particular historical conditions in which such principles operate and are actualized. In particular, I suggest that the meaning and function of manufactured goods and money (“Whites’ stuff,” …

Plato’S Gorgias: Rhetoric, The Greatest Evil, And The True Art Of Politics, Paul A. George Dec 2010

Plato’S Gorgias: Rhetoric, The Greatest Evil, And The True Art Of Politics, Paul A. George

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The interweaving of rhetoric, the greatest evil, and the true art of politics create the unity of the dialogue. Whereas Gorgianic rhetoric is pleasure seeking flattery which inspires belief without knowledge, noble rhetoric is refutative, inspiring the acknowledgment of falsity or ignorance. Moreover, it is self-refutation, meaning that the person being persuaded arrives at the conclusion of his ignorance by his own realization; the noble rhetor does not connect all the dots for them. The greatest evil is to have a false opinion about justice. A just penalty for suffering from the greatest evil is to face selfrefutation in hopes …

Competition And Regulation In The Gold Industry: An American Perspective, Jared A. Wilkerson Dec 2010

Competition And Regulation In The Gold Industry: An American Perspective, Jared A. Wilkerson

W&M Law Student Publications

When taken from a domestic viewpoint, the primary gold market appears to be noncompetitive and marred by concentration. However, when seen at the global scale, it is clear that the primary gold market is competitive and diluted. Further, even if the primary market were noncompetitive and concentrated at the global level, that market probably could not readily affect the price of gold. Regardless of competitiveness, gold mines in the United States and elsewhere are subject to environmental and safety regulations that increase the cost of production; Regulations are stringently enforced in the United States as compared to competitor countries, potentially …

Reconsidering Federalism And The Farm: Toward Including Local, State And Regional Voices In America's Food System, Margaret Sova Mccabe Dec 2010

Reconsidering Federalism And The Farm: Toward Including Local, State And Regional Voices In America's Food System, Margaret Sova Mccabe

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Why is the relationship between our food system and federalism important to American law and health? It is important simply because federal law controls the American food system. This essay considers how federal law came to structure our food system, and suggests that though food is an essential part of our national economy, the dominating role of the federal government alienates citizens from their food system. It does so by characterizing food as a primarily economic issue, rather than one that has ethical, health, and cultural components. However, state and local governments have much to offer in terms of broadening …

Behind The Technology: Ct Perfusion In The Setting Of Acute Stroke Management, Benjamin Zussman, Adam Flanders, Robert H. Rosenwasser Md, Pascal Jabbour Md

JHN Journal

Computed Tomography Perfusion (CTP) is an imaging modality that generates parametric maps of cerebral hemodynamics which are useful in the assessment of suspected acute ischemic stoke. However, the technology underlying CTP is complex and serious controversy surrounds the safety of CTP tests and the reproducibility and validity of CTP results. This report briefly outlines the history of CTP, its current clinical applications for stroke management, the main controversies surrounding CTP, and future directions for this technology.

Dural Arteriovenous Malformations: A Review Of The Literature And A Presentation Of The Jhn Series, Ed Marchan, Stavropoula Tjoumakaris, Robert H. Rosenwasser Md, L. Fernando Gonzalez, Ciro Randazzo Md, Pascal Jabbour Md

JHN Journal

Dural arteriovenous malformations (DAVMs), also known as dural arteriovenous fistulas, are arteriovenous shunts from a dural arterial supply to a dural venous channel, typically supplied by pachymeningeal arteries and located near a major venous sinus.1 The etiology of these lesions is not fully understood. DAVMs in the pediatric population are associated with structural venous abnormalities ,2 but the majority of DAVMs are thought to be acquired. Different etiologies have been implicated in this phenomenon, namely: sinus thrombosis, trauma or surgery.2–6

The Phenomenology Of The Bachelor Of Science In Hvac Engineering Technology From Ferris State University, Michael Feutz Dec 2010

The Phenomenology Of The Bachelor Of Science In Hvac Engineering Technology From Ferris State University, Michael Feutz

Dissertations

Career and Technical Education (CTE) has evolved from industry-specific training to a more broad-based education that incorporates core academic learning objectives and prepares the student for work (Rothwell & Gerity, 2008; Uloa, 2006; Reese, 2002; Rojewski, 2002; Stone, 2002; Schmidli, 2001). Little is known about how well individual programs align with the industry for which graduates are prepared, (Zinser, 2003) or what CTE has meant to its graduates.

This research focused on graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineering Technology (HVAC-ET) at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. A phenomenological design was used …
