Incarcerating Indigenous People Of The Wongatha Lands In The Eastern Goldfields Of Western Australia : Indigenous Leaders’ Perspectives, Stephen J. Bedells Dec 2010

Incarcerating Indigenous People Of The Wongatha Lands In The Eastern Goldfields Of Western Australia : Indigenous Leaders’ Perspectives, Stephen J. Bedells

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The Wongi

people are Indigenous to the Goldfields region and account for just 10 per cent of the population; yet they make up 90 per cent of the prisoners. With Indigenous incarceration rates above 8,000 per 100,000 adult male population in Western Australia, imprisonment is clearly a common experience for Indigenous men and women that profoundly affect the lives of their families. Gaols are meant to be used as a sentence of last resort when the severity of the offence requires severe punishment and prevention of further offences requires close confinement. For this research, Wongi leaders were interviewed about their …

Priming In Interpersonal Contexts: Implications For Affect And Behavior., Na Wyer, G Calvini, A Nash, N Miles Dec 2010

Priming In Interpersonal Contexts: Implications For Affect And Behavior., Na Wyer, G Calvini, A Nash, N Miles

School of Psychology

Priming stereotypes can lead to a variety of behavioral outcomes, including assimilation, contrast, and response behaviors. However, the conditions that give rise to each of these outcomes are unspecified. Furthermore, theoretical accounts posit that prime-to-behavior effects are either direct (i.e., unmediated) or mediated by cognitive processes, whereas the role of affective processes has been largely unexplored. The present research directly investigated both of these issues. Three experiments demonstrated that priming a threatening social group ("hoodies") influences both affect and behavior in an interpersonal context. Hoodie priming produced both behavioral avoidance and several affective changes (including social apprehension, threat sensitivity, and …

A New Life For The Care Plan?, Laura K. Heermann Langford, Ann Tinker, Marc-Aurel Martial

Faculty Publications

The current hot topic within clinical informatics is meaningful use and incentive payments defined under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act's electronic health record (EHR) incentive program. This recent legislation calls for healthcare providers to meet a set of minimum requirements using a certified EHR. The point of this government program is to support the widespread adoption of the EHR. The program lays out an overall plan that incentivizes hospitals and providers to implement, adopt, and "meaningfully" use an EHR. The incentive program starts with basic data entry and exchange in a standardized manner, with …

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

The article offers eight simple rules that teachers can use to help preschoolers build their vocabularies. It suggests teachers to talk with children to identify topics that interest them. It also recommends teachers to accompany all the routines and activities of the preschool day to enhance the language experience of children. Moreover, it proposes that open-ended questions invites preschoolers to offer lengthier and more detailed responses, thus stimulating their language growth.

Cigarette Smoke, Dna Damage And Repair In Human Cervical And Vaginal Cells In Vitro And Ex Vivo., Afsoon Moktar Dec 2010

Cigarette Smoke, Dna Damage And Repair In Human Cervical And Vaginal Cells In Vitro And Ex Vivo., Afsoon Moktar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Among gynecological malignancies, carcinoma of the cervix is the leading cancer type worldwide. Conversely, vaginal tumors account for an incidence of approximately 1-2% of lower genital tract malignancies. Interestingly, the major shared risk factor among women with cervical and vaginal tumors is infection with cancer-associated human papillomaviruses (HPVs). In fact, HPV infection is the necessary causative factor in the development and progression of cervical and vaginal neoplasia in the majority of cases. Epidemiological studies support that cervical and vaginal pre-cancerous lesions that are initiated by HPV infection generally regress in the absence of known risk factors such as cigarette smoking. …

Comparative Perspectives Of Direct Support Professionals Working With Adults With Intellectual Disabilities Regarding Standard Competencies., Cynthia Anne Bayes 1955- Dec 2010

Comparative Perspectives Of Direct Support Professionals Working With Adults With Intellectual Disabilities Regarding Standard Competencies., Cynthia Anne Bayes 1955-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a growing shortage of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities. This shortage is at a crisis now and will continue to become more of a crisis unless changes are made. This is a crisis for many community employers and even more of a crisis for the people with disabilities who are faced with constant turnover and the discontinuity created by the withdrawal, gaps in services, and introduction of new people who are likely to leave the position during the first year of employment (Larson & Hewitt, 2005). High turnover, vacancy rates and …

Leadership, Curriculum, Instruction, And Accountability Scores : Evidence From Kentucky Scholastic Audits., Rebecca Curry Todd Dec 2010

Leadership, Curriculum, Instruction, And Accountability Scores : Evidence From Kentucky Scholastic Audits., Rebecca Curry Todd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1983 the National Commission on Excellence in Education released A Nation at Risk, which triggered an extended era of school reform culminating in today's accountability movement. In Kentucky the school improvement process, in which principals play an integral part, is based on the Standards and Indicators for School Improvement (SISI--with nine standards and 88 indicators overall) and the Scholastic Audit, a measurement tool based thereon. Murphy's (2004) mediated model of instructional leadership recognizes that complex school reform necessitates both direct and indirect skills. The central research question captures the purpose of this study, testing Murphy's model: Based on Scholastic …

Gender Role Stereotypes In Advertising : A Test Of The Match-Up Hypothesis On Advertising Effectiveness., Sara Picklesimer Dec 2010

Gender Role Stereotypes In Advertising : A Test Of The Match-Up Hypothesis On Advertising Effectiveness., Sara Picklesimer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Images in advertisements often depict social expectations for gendered behavior, reinforcing stereotypical masculine and feminine behaviors. This study examined the effectiveness of using gender role stereotypical images in advertisements by matching two products with a male and female, based on the match-up hypothesis. Two gender congruent and two gender incongruent advertisements were created to test the effectiveness of gender congruency on perceived message clarity, advertisement believability, perceived argument quality, attitude toward the advertisement, attitude toward the brand, and purchase intention, based on the information-processing model. Though gender congruent advertisements were perceived as slightly more effective than the gender incongruent advertisements, …

Dimensional Relationships Between The Sphenoid Sinus, Maxillary Sinuses And Other Craniomaxillofacial Structures Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Analysis., Richard Michael Halpern Dec 2010

Dimensional Relationships Between The Sphenoid Sinus, Maxillary Sinuses And Other Craniomaxillofacial Structures Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Analysis., Richard Michael Halpern

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The study investigated dimensional relationships between the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses and other selected craniomaxillofacial structures by using traditional cephalometric and volumetric procedures based on cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) data. Methods and Materials: A retrospective three-dimensional (volumetric) and two-dimensional (conventional cephalometric) analyses were conducted on CBCT datasets of 27 subjects who met the inclusional criteria from a sampled database of 2,290 individuals. Subjects were divided into 3 groups: (1) pre- fused spheno-occipital synchondrosis < 18 years (n=8), (2) fused spheno-occipital synchondrosis < 18 years (n=9), and (3) = 18 years with fused spheno-occipital synchondosis (n= 10). Results: Differences between studied groups were found for linear and angular measurement. Specific correlations were found between certain topographic and internal measurements, and some sinus dimensions and other selected craniomaxillofacial structures. Conclusion: Dimensional correlations exist between the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses and development of other selected craniomaxillofacial structures.

The Morality Of Special Relationships, Joshu Davis Dec 2010

The Morality Of Special Relationships, Joshu Davis

XULAneXUS

This essay originated as a senior thesis paper, attempting to address the problem various normative ethical theories had when put in the realm of “special relationships.” Special relationships are the relationships people have with family and close friends, which often have special duties or rights associated with them. Furthermore, the duties and rights associated with special relationships are often very different and more complex than those associated with strangers. The focus of the thesis was to see whether or not the various normative ethical theories within philosophy could be applied to special relationships without compromising the unique aspects of special …

Body Image, Peer Pressure, And Sexual Activity, Whitney Miller Dec 2010

Body Image, Peer Pressure, And Sexual Activity, Whitney Miller

XULAneXUS

Yamamiya, Cash, and Thompson (2006) found that when women begin to obsess over their bodies and their overall physical attractiveness, especially when trying to attract the opposite sex, they begin to form a negative body image about themselves. However, although research has shown that body image is assessed when attempting to attract the opposite sex, the relationship between body image and peer pressure’s influence on sexual activity has not been shown. Additionally, Whitbeck, Yoder, Hoyt, and Conger (1999) found that females with higher levels of self-esteem had significantly lower levels of sexual activity than those with lower levels of self-esteem. …

Analysis Of An Online Support Group For Women With Breast Cancer, Laura Boxley Dec 2010

Analysis Of An Online Support Group For Women With Breast Cancer, Laura Boxley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

With over 200,000 new diagnoses in 2004, breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women in the United States. Both the stress of treatment and the threat of a potentially lethal illness present significant challenges to an individual's emotional well-being and coping skills, yet paradoxically many women report benefits from dealing with this adversity. The aims of this investigation were to describe the characteristics of benefit finding as expressed by breast cancer survivors participating in an online breast cancer support group, and to assess the relationship between symptom distress, emotional well-being and benefit finding using baseline …

Parental Divorce, Attachment, And Self-Other Conceptualization, Julia A. Hewett Dec 2010

Parental Divorce, Attachment, And Self-Other Conceptualization, Julia A. Hewett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The formation of strong attachment bonds in childhood and adolescence has a significant effect on adult self and other concepts operationalized here as self-esteem and hostility. These self-other conceptualizations are posited to facilitate the formation of successful relationships and well-being in adulthood. To determine whether parental separations before the age of 16 years disrupt attachment bonds and subsequent self-other conceptualizations, participants from three naturally formed parental marital status groups were compared on attachment, self-esteem and hostility: divorced parents (N = 622), married parents (N = 7, 424), or divorced but remarried parents (N = 313). Individuals who had divorced or …

Long-Term Hypoxia Regulates Cortisol Biosynthesis In The Ovine Fetal Adrenal Cortex, Vladimir Enrique Vargas Dec 2010

Long-Term Hypoxia Regulates Cortisol Biosynthesis In The Ovine Fetal Adrenal Cortex, Vladimir Enrique Vargas

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Previous studies demonstrated enhanced fetal adrenal cortisol biosynthesis following exposure to long-term hypoxia (LTH). The studies presented here were designed to determine the mechanism(s) regulating this important adaptive endocrine response. Ewes were maintained at high altitude (3,820 m) from approximately day 40 to 138-141 of gestation. Fetal adrenal glands were then collected from LTH and age matched normoxic controls. Dispersed fetal adrenal cortical cells (FACs) were untreated, treated with ACTH, treated in combination with ACTH precursors (POMC and 22-kDa pro-ACTH), or pre-treated with H-89 and or UO126 followed by ACTH treatment. Following ACTH treatment, cortisol biosynthesis increased in both groups …

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy And Transition Metals In Alzheimer's Disease, Matthew Schrag Dec 2010

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy And Transition Metals In Alzheimer's Disease, Matthew Schrag

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Alterations in brain metals homeostasis and particularly brain iron overload have been postulated to play a role in Alzheimer's disease, contributing to oxidative stress and neuronal injury; however, the source of this iron is not clear and may be due to metabolic derangement(s), failed iron clearance mechanisms or exogenous deposition such as through bleeding. This series of studies was designed to evaluate the extent of metals dyshomeostasis in the Alzheimer's disease brain and specifically whether microvascular bleeding is a major contributor to Alzheimer's disease-related iron overload. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a vascular manifestation of Alzheimer's disease present to some …

The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of long-term concentrations of ambient PM on risks of all causes, cardiopulmonary, coronary heart disease (CHD), total cancer, and any mention of nonmalignant respiratory disease (NMRD) mortality.

The health effects of long-term ambient air pollution have been studied with up to 30 years of follow-up in the AHSMOG cohort, a cohort of 6,338 nonsmoking white California adults. Monthly concentrations of ambient air pollutants [particulate matter(PMio), Ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) or particulate matter

In the AHSMOG cohort, each increment of 10 |ig/m3 in PMio in two-pollutant models …

Amending Constituting Identity, Rosalind Dixon Dec 2010

Amending Constituting Identity, Rosalind Dixon

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Constitutional amendment procedures can create constitutional change in two ways: by providing evidence of popular support for constitutional change, and by changing the textual basis for subsequent acts of constitutional interpretation. Both mechanisms have clearly also succeeded, in various countries, in creating changes in the domain of constitutional identity. The question the essay investigates is whether there is nonetheless something peculiar about this domain that makes it especially difficult to succeed in using both these amendment mechanisms, simultaneously, in the quest for constitutional change. To explore this question, the essay draws on two distinct attempts to “amend” constitutional identity in …

What Is The Impact Of Liquor Licensing Laws On Portland’S Entertainment Venues? A Case Study, Will Etheridge Dec 2010

What Is The Impact Of Liquor Licensing Laws On Portland’S Entertainment Venues? A Case Study, Will Etheridge

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

In January 2009, Port City Music Hall in Portland, Maine was preparing to open its doors to the public for the first time. With a capacity for nearly six hundred attendees, Port City Music Hall was designed to attract national touring acts to Portland too big for the bar scene, but not suited for the Merrill Auditorium or Cumberland Civic Center. With the State Theatre still shuttered at the time, this new venue hoped to fill an important niche in the city’s creative economy, bringing a diverse array of performers that would not otherwise be able to find a viable …

The Role Of Ambient Air Pollution In The Occurrence Of Emphysema, Shiva Metghalchi Dec 2010

The Role Of Ambient Air Pollution In The Occurrence Of Emphysema, Shiva Metghalchi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Emphysema is the most common cause of death from respiratory disease in the United States. Emphysema is most common among people aged 50 and older. Those with a genetic predisposition to emphysema may experience the onset as early as their thirties or forties. Men are more likely than women to develop emphysema, but female cases are increasing as the number of female smokers rises.

In the past few years, etiological and pathogenic research has been carried out in an attempt to determine the reason for an increase in deaths and other health problems associated with air pollution, and there have …

Effects Of Acculturation On Hiv/Aids Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Asian And Pacific Islander (Api) Women, Margaret Cabotage Salud Dec 2010

Effects Of Acculturation On Hiv/Aids Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Asian And Pacific Islander (Api) Women, Margaret Cabotage Salud

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background. In the US women are the fastest growing group for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV and AIDS. In addition, the estimated AIDS cases among female adults and adolescents, aged 13-19, increased from 7% in 1985 to approximately 26% in 2002. Most infections occur by heterosexual transmission with 53% occurring through contact with a high-risk sexual partner. While overall HIV/AIDS rates in the Asian Pacific Islander (API) community remain low, they are rising and HIV testing rates, one of the major prevention strategies for HIV, are lower than that of other populations. Furthermore, very little is known about APIs …

Characterizing And Treating The Neuropathology Of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex In The Mouse, Sharon W. Way Dec 2010

Characterizing And Treating The Neuropathology Of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex In The Mouse, Sharon W. Way

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem, autosomal dominant disorder affecting approximately 1 in 6000 births. Developmental brain abnormalities cause substantial morbidity and mortality and often lead to neurological disease including epilepsy, cognitive disabilities, and autism. TSC is caused by inactivating mutations in either TSC1 or TSC2, whose protein products are known inhibitors of mTORC1, an important kinase regulating translation and cell growth. Nonetheless, neither the pathophysiology of the neurological manifestations of TSC nor the extent of mTORC1 involvement in the development of these lesions is known. Murine models would greatly advance the study of this debilitating disorder. This thesis …

Rmi1 Is Essential For Early Embryonic Development And Attenuation Of Tumor Development, Haoyi Chen Dec 2010

Rmi1 Is Essential For Early Embryonic Development And Attenuation Of Tumor Development, Haoyi Chen

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

RMI1 (BLM-Associated Protein 75 or Blap75) is highly conserved from yeast to human. Previous studies have shown that hRMI1 is required for BLM/TopoIIIα/RMI1 complex stability and function. However, in vivo functions of RMI1 remain elusive. To address this question, I generated RMI1 knockout mice by homologous replacement targeting. While RMI1+/- mice showed no obvious phenotype, deletion of both RMI1 alleles leads to early embryonic lethality before implantation. I then generated RMI1/p53 double knockout mice. After ionizing radiation treatment at 4Gy, RMI1/p53 double-heterzygous mice showed shortened tumor latency and aggressive tumor types when comparing with wild type, RMI1+/- and p53+/- control …

New To Ols For Monitoring Gamma Camera Uniformity, Brad K. Lofton Dec 2010

New To Ols For Monitoring Gamma Camera Uniformity, Brad K. Lofton

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Detector uniformity is a fundamental performance characteristic of all modern gamma camera systems, and ensuring a stable, uniform detector response is critical for maintaining clinical images that are free of artifact. For these reasons, the assessment of detector uniformity is one of the most common activities associated with a successful clinical quality assurance program in gamma camera imaging. The evaluation of this parameter, however, is often unclear because it is highly dependent upon acquisition conditions, reviewer expertise, and the application of somewhat arbitrary limits that do not characterize the spatial location of the non-uniformities. Furthermore, as the goal of any …
