Unmet Medical Need Of Underserved Population In A Safety-Net Organization, Leslie Clem
Unmet Medical Need Of Underserved Population In A Safety-Net Organization, Leslie Clem
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Background: Safety net providers serve a large proportion of America’s uninsured and low income population. The purpose of this study is to determine if differences in unmet medical needs exist between the provisional and clinic populations, age groups, and sex and race categories. This research study provides information about the population that receives services from Good Neighbor House, a non-profit social service organization in Dayton, Ohio.
Methods: GNH created a survey to assess the unmet medical need of their clients. The instrument contains questions about routine medical care, unmet medical care in the last 12 months, medical bills, and demographic …
Development And Psychometric Validation Of The Dementia Attitudes Scale, Melissa L. O'Connor, Susan H. Mcfadden
Development And Psychometric Validation Of The Dementia Attitudes Scale, Melissa L. O'Connor, Susan H. Mcfadden
Aging Studies Faculty Publications
This study employed qualitative construct mapping and factor analysis to construct a scale to measure attitudes toward dementia. Five family caregivers, five professionals, and five college students participated in structured interviews. Qualitative analysis of the interviews led to a 46-item scale, which was reduced to 20 items following principal axis factoring with two different samples: college students () and certified nursing assistant students (). Confirmatory factor analysis was then conducted with another sample of college students (). The final scale, titled the Dementia Attitudes Scale (DAS), essentially had a two-factor structure; the factors were labeled “dementia knowledge” and “social comfort.” …

Assessing The Perceptions Of A Biostatistics And Epidemiology Module: Views Of Year 2 Medical Students From A Malaysian University. A Cross-Sectional Survey, Aqil M. Daher, Farzana Amin
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Background In the era of evidence based medicine, biostatistics and epidemiology are considered as the main elements aiding the health professional to design a research study, understand the literature, and make decisions about patient care. The aim of the study is to explore students' perception about this subject because it plays an important role in determining educational outcome. Methods Data were collected from a self-administered questionnaire distributed among 164 Year 2 medical students. The 5-point Likert scale anchored by Strongly disagree = 1 and Strongly agree = 5 included 36 questions in four domains designed to assess the perception of …

Google Scholar As A Source For Citation And Impact Analysis For A Non-Isi Indexed Medical Journal, S.A. Sanni, A.N. Zainab
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
It is difficult to determine the influence and impact of journals which are not covered by the ISI databases and Journal Citation Report. However, with the availability of databases such as MyAIS (Malaysian Abstracting and Indexing System), which offers sufficient information to support bibliometric analysis as well as being indexed by Google Scholar which provides citation information, it has become possible to obtain productivity, citation and impact information for non-ISI indexed journals. The bibliometric tool Harzing's Publish and Perish was used to collate citation information from Google scholar. The study examines article productivity, the citations obtained by articles and calculates …

Long-Term Fish Oil Supplementation Induces Cardiac Electrical Remodeling By Changing Channel Protein Expression In The Rabbit Model, Xulin Xu, Min Jiang, Yuhong Wang, Timothy Smith, Clive M. Baumgarten, Mark A. Wood, Gea-Ny Tseng
Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations
Clinical trials and epidemiological studies have suggested that dietary fish oil (FO) supplementation can provide an anti-arrhythmic benefit in some patient populations. The underlying mechanisms are not entirely clear. We wanted to understand how FO supplementation (for 4 weeks) affected the action potential configuration/duration of ventricular myocytes, and the ionic mechanism(s)/molecular basis for these effects. The experiments were conducted on adult rabbits, a widely used animal model for cardiac electrophysiology and pathophysiology. We used gas chromatography - mass spectroscopy to confirm that FO feeding produced a marked increase in the content of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the phospholipids of …

Real-Time Locating Systems (Rtls) To Improve Fall Detection, Mary E. Bowen, Jeffrey Craighead, Chadwick A. Wingrave, William D. Kearns
Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Faculty Publications
Objective To determine whether a Real Time Locating System (RTLS) can be used to accurately detect a fall and discuss the application of RTLS as a fall detection system in the home and health care environments. Methods Phase I used a mannequin to determine the feasibility of RTLS to detect a fall from three positional conditions of: standing, seated in a wheelchair, and laying on a bed. Phase II used a human subject to be an ecologically valid simulation of a fall from these conditions. Ten trials of each of these three conditions were conducted across subjects. The observed time …

Of Falls And Fractals: My Career With My Mentor, Colleague And Friend, Professor James L. Fozard, William D. Kearns
Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Faculty Publications
Falls are expensive and often life-changing events. In 2000 there were 2.6 M non-fatal falls that cost the US economy in excess of $19 B. Fall prediction is an inexact science due in part to the lack of real-time or even near real-time longitudinal monitoring and assessment technologies which can track conditions preceding a fall. Current fall prediction methodologies assess gait and balance parameters at perhaps one or two points in time and attempt to infer future risk. A system for elders that is analogous to the 'black box' flight recorder used in commercial aviation could potentially enhance our knowledge …
Nursing Home Organizational Characteristics And Utilization Of Cancer-Related Medical Services, Chun-Chieh Lin
Nursing Home Organizational Characteristics And Utilization Of Cancer-Related Medical Services, Chun-Chieh Lin
Theses and Dissertations
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S and is more common among the elderly. Since frailty and other age related conditions put the elderly at risk for nursing home care, nursing homes may be the site of care and death for many elderly cancer patients. However, there is a large gap in knowledge concerning cancer treatment of elderly nursing home residents. Since residents rely heavily on their nursing facilities, nursing homes might influence them in their treatment decisions. After controlling for resident and nursing home market characteristics, this study applies Andersen’s Behavioral Model to examine whether …

Still Pioneers: Special Social And Economic Hardships For Elderly Gays And Lesbians, Annick Persinger
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
This Note will first discuss the social factors that make accessing retirement and support services problematic for lesbian and gay elders, such as ageism in the gay and lesbian community and heterosexual-focused retirement institutions. Part II will investigate how federal law and policy affects lesbian and gay elders' ability to obtain health care benefits and save for retirement. Part III will examine state and municipal solutions for same-sex couples, in the face of federal discrimination. Part IV will illustrate the necessity of acquiring an attorney because of the challenges in preparing for a lesbian or gay elder's incompetence, and the …

Perceptions Of Challenges To Retaining African American Male Graduate Students In Higher Education, Leeantwann S. Mccline
Masters Theses
The primary purpose of the present study was to explore issues relevant to challenges faced by African American male graduate students who attend Eastern Illinois University, with particular attention given to retention issues and challenges that serve as both support and barriers. The sample population for the present study consisted of African American male graduate students admitted during the fall 2009 semester. At the time of the study, these students had been accepted and enrolled fulltime in a degree program offered by the Eastern Illinois University Graduate School. Qualitative inquiry facilitated the ascertaining of perceptions, myths, and descriptions of the …

The Accidental Elder Law Professor, A. Kimberley Dayton

This Article discusses my somewhat unusual and erratic path to becoming an Elder Law professor. My story, told more or less in chronological order, is a first-person narrative of one woman’s journey to achieve, if not academic renown, then at least personal satisfaction in the realm of the legal academy. It does not aspire to convey ponderous wisdom about the best way to teach Elder Law or the importance of scholarly productivity as a measure of one’s legitimacy. On the contrary, I hope the Article will illustrate that, in the same way the field of Elder Law has grown and …

Variability Of Lower Extremity Joint Kinematics During Backward Walking In A Virtual Environment, Dimitrios Kastavelis, Mukul Mukherjee, Leslie M. Decker, Nikolaos Stergiou
Journal Articles
Backward walking (BW) shows significant differences with forward walking (FW) and these differences are potentially useful in rehabilitation. However the lack of visual cues makes BW risky. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of visual cues provided by a virtual environment on FW and BW on gait variability. Each subject underwent four conditions of treadmill walking at self-selected pace. The subjects walked backwards in three conditions and forwards in the fourth condition. A virtual corridor was displayed to the subjects in the FW condition (forward optic flow) and two of the backward conditions (forward and backward …

Residential Segregation And Social Integration: Do Blacks And Whites Differ?, Joongbaeck Kim, Hyeyoung Woo
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
While it is well known that racial residential segregation affects social behaviors and various outcomes of individuals, research about the relationship between residential segregation and social integration is limited. We examine how residential segregation is associated with three types of social integration: formal, informal, and advisory integration, and whether the associations differ for Blacks and Whites using data from the Americans’ Changing Lives survey. Our results show that residential segregation is negatively associated with advisory integration for both Blacks and Whites. It also predicts lower levels of formal integration for Blacks, but not for Whites. We did not find significant …

The Elder Economic Security Initiative™ Program: The Elder Economic Security Standard™ Index For New York, Gerontology Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston, Wider Opportunities For Women
Gerontology Institute Publications
This report addresses income adequacy for New York’s older adults using the national WOW-GI National Elder Economic Security Standard Index (Elder Index) methodology. The Elder Index benchmarks basic costs of living for elder households and illustrates how costs of living vary geographically and are based on the characteristics of elder households, including household size, home ownership or renter status, and health status. The costs are based on market costs for basic needs of elder households and do not assume any public or private supports.

Resting Energy Expenditure Changes With Weight Loss: Racial Differences, Xuewen Wang, Tongjian You, Leon Lenchik, Barbara J. Nicklas
Faculty Publications
It is controversial whether weight loss reduces resting energy expenditure (REE) to a different magnitude in black and white women. This study was to determine whether changes in REE with weight loss were different between black and white postmenopausal women, and whether changes in body composition (including regional lean and fat mass) were associated with REE changes within each race. Black (n= 26) and white (n= 65) women (age= 58.2±5.4 years, 25< BMI< 40 kg·m−2) completed a 20-week weight loss intervention. Body weight, lean and fat mass (total body, limb and trunk) via dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and REE via indirect …

This project developed specific examples of skills and resources for three example categories of ILST and developed recommendations for enhancing the creation of goals. It was important to develop indicators into a tiered structure for reinforcing those skills and resources into knowledge through an added educational component. Methodology was developed and necessary instrumentation and processes were designed for implementation. And, an informed consent was designed for any organization providing Independent Living Skills Training (ILST).
