La Caja De Pandora: Improving Access To Hospice Care Among Hispanic And African-American Patients, Kathy L. Cerminara, Alina M. Perez
Faculty Scholarship
Many patients clinging to hope in the form of potentially curative treatment could benefit from hospice services, but, for the most part, it is not until the patient accepts the finality of his or her condition that the physical, psychological and social benefits of hospice care become accessible to the patient and his or her family. Under current Medicare regulations and other health care payers’ policies, patients must abandon the hope of curative treatment before opting for hospice services. As a result, many terminally ill patients access the services late, sometimes a few hours before death. Scholars have proposed that …

High School Bridge Program: A Multidisciplinary Stem Research Program, Jiang Zhe, Dennis Doverspike, Julie Zhao, Paul C. Lam, Craig C. Menzemer
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
A Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) summer Bridge Program was developed for high school students. The program was designed to encourage students to consider choosing an engineering major in college and to explore STEM as a future career. This was accomplished through a 10-week program involving multidisciplinary research activities. The participants in the program included 33 high school students. Among former participants in position to make a choice in terms of attending college, 100% had chosen to continue on in college, and 86% had chosen to major in a STEM area. The results indicated that that the program had …

What’S Love Got To Do With It?: Social Connections, Perceived Health Stressors, And Daily Mood In Married Octogenarians, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
This study examined day-to-day links among time spent with others, health stressors, and mood in 47 elderly couples over an 8-day period. Hierarchical linear modeling revealed daily links between time spent with others and mood for men. For both men and women, being in a satisfying relationship was associated with stronger positive daily links between spending time with one’s partner and mood. Women reported lower mood on days when they experienced greater pain and physical limitation, and all participants reported lower mood on days when they experienced other health stressors. Marital satisfaction but not time spent with others buffered day-to-day …
Facing The Music Or Burying Our Heads In The Sand?: Adaptive Emotion Regulation In Mid- And Late-Life, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz
Facing The Music Or Burying Our Heads In The Sand?: Adaptive Emotion Regulation In Mid- And Late-Life, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Psychological defense theories postulate that keeping threatening information out of awareness brings short-term reduction of anxiety at the cost of longer-term dysfunction. By contrast, Socioemotional Selectivity Theory suggests that preference for positively-valenced information is a manifestation of adaptive emotion regulation in later life. Using six decades of longitudinal data on 61 men, we examined links between emotion regulation indices informed by these distinct conceptualizations: defense patterns in earlier adulthood and selective memory for positively-valenced images in late life. Men who used more avoidant defenses in midlife recognized fewer emotionally-valenced and neutral images in a memory test 35-40 years later. Late-life …

Four-Day Work Week: Old Lessons, New Questions Symposium: Redefining Work: Implications Of The Four-Day Work Week - The Four-Day Work Week: Views From The Ground, Robert C. Bird
Connecticut Law Review
The four-day work week is quickly gaining popularity. The blogosphere is alive with pages describing numerous benefits and recommending it as a practice whose time has come. With Utah’s adoption of the four-day work week, as well as numerous government and private entities considering the shift, “Thank God It’s Thursday” appears poised to become a characteristic of the modern workplace. Not so fast. The fact remains that the four-day work week is not particularly novel, questionably beneficial, and far from inevitable. Academics and practitioners alike were no less enthusiastic about the fourday work week in the early 1970s. Interest faded …

The Mds Mortality Risk Index: The Evolution Of A Method For Predicting 6-Month Mortality In Nursing Home Residents, Davina Porock, Debra Parker-Oliver, Gregory F. Petroski, Marilyn Rantz
Publications and Research
Background: Accurate prognosis is vital to the initiation of advance care planning particularly in a vulnerable, at risk population such as care home residents. The aim of this paper is to report on the revision and simplification of the MDS Mortality Rating Index (MMRI) for use in clinical practice to predict the probability of death in six months for care home residents.
Methods: The design was a secondary analysis of a US Minimum Data Set (MDS) for long term care residents using regression analysis to identify predictors of mortality within six months.
Results: Using twelve easy to collect …
The Benefits Of Traditional Physical Therapy And Primal Reflex Release Technique In Treating Chronic Low Back Pain, Kenneth Worlanyo Wutoh
The Benefits Of Traditional Physical Therapy And Primal Reflex Release Technique In Treating Chronic Low Back Pain, Kenneth Worlanyo Wutoh
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background and Purpose: Low back pain (LBP) is very prevalent in the general population. It is estimated that 79% of the population will experience low back pain during a lifetime. The purpose of this case report is to elaborate on the importance of traditional physical therapy interventions and to introduce the use of a new technique: primal reflex release technique (PRRT) in the treatment of LBP.
Case Description: The client was a 74-year-old female with history of multiple falls resulting in a vertebral fracture that was reduced by a kyphoplasty. Her chief complaints were pain in the T12 - L1 …
A Conceptual Framework For Higher Education Faculty Mentoring, Pamela S. Lottero-Perdue, Steve Fifield
A Conceptual Framework For Higher Education Faculty Mentoring, Pamela S. Lottero-Perdue, Steve Fifield
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
There is considerable variability in conceptions of faculty mentoring in higher education. Rather than view this diversity as a problem, we see it as a potential resource that can inform design, implementation, and evaluation of faculty mentoring. To learn from this diversity, we review the literature on facuity mentoring in higher education to create a conceptual framework of mentoring. The conceptual framework is a tool that program administrators, participants, and evaluators can use to adapt mentoring to the unique needs of particular faculty and institutions.
Stress And Anxiety Reduction Due To Writing Diaries, Journals, E-Mail, And Weblogs, Briana Murnahan
Stress And Anxiety Reduction Due To Writing Diaries, Journals, E-Mail, And Weblogs, Briana Murnahan
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Stress and anxiety are very common factors in the everyday lives of college students. Although some students have found ways to reduce them, others have not. Student participants (N = 165) indicated whether they used one or more of four different mediums for personal writing, and, if so, when and why they started to use them, how frequently they used them, and whether the use relieved their stress and reduced their anxiety. These four mediums included two traditional styles of writing (diary and journal) and two newer styles of writing (e-mail and weblogs). Results showed that e-mail was used …
Total Number Of Synapses In The Adult Human Neocortex, Thai Nguyen
Total Number Of Synapses In The Adult Human Neocortex, Thai Nguyen
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The brain is composed of glial cells and neurons where synapses form connections between neurons and other cells. Since synapses are very small, so either a light or electron microscope is required to see them. Unlike other mammals, synapses in the human brain deteriorate rapidly upon death making them difficult to study. This project constructs a simple model for the number of synapses in the human neocortex by age and sex based on the amount of neurons. This hypothetical model can also be used to study the impact of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia that are marked by …

Litigation, Integration, And Transformation: Using Medicaid To Address Racial Inequities In Health Care, Ruqaiijah Yearby
Litigation, Integration, And Transformation: Using Medicaid To Address Racial Inequities In Health Care, Ruqaiijah Yearby
Faculty Publications
Using a public health policy perspective, this article examines the persistence of racial inequities in nursing homes and prescribes a solution to address these inequities. I use empirical data to prove the persistence of racial inequities in health care, analyze the government policies that allow racial inequities to continue, and provide a solution of regulatory integration. Specifically, I propose that civil rights enforcement be integrated with the nursing home enforcement system, which has been aggressively enforced and monitored. There are many strategies that may lead to the adoption of this system. One such strategy is using the Medicaid Act to …
The Effects Of Whole Body Vibration On Bone Mineral Density For A Person With A Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Study, Ronald Davis, Charlotte Sanborn, David Nichols, David M. Bazett-Jones, Eric Dugan
The Effects Of Whole Body Vibration On Bone Mineral Density For A Person With A Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Study, Ronald Davis, Charlotte Sanborn, David Nichols, David M. Bazett-Jones, Eric Dugan
Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Bone mineral density (BMD) loss is a medical concern for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Concerns related to osteoporosis have lead researchers to use various interventions to address BMD loss within this population. Whole body vibration (WBV) has been reported to improve BMD for postmenopausal women and suggested for SCI. The purpose of this case study was to identify the effects of WBV on BMD for an individual with SCI. There were three progressive phases (standing only, partial standing, and combined stand with vibration), each lasting 10 weeks. Using the least significant change calculation, significant positive changes in BMD …
The Relationship Between Body Image And Body Mass Index In Attendees At A Health Fair, Millie S. Olds
The Relationship Between Body Image And Body Mass Index In Attendees At A Health Fair, Millie S. Olds
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between body image and body mass index (BMI) in attendees at a health fair. BMI and body image was also compared between races, ages and genders. It was hypothesized that there would be discrepancies between perceived body image and weight status, as measured by BMI. Sixty-two participants at a health fair in Cincinnati completed a survey about perceived body image and had their height and weight measured and BMI calculated later. Results suggested a positive relationship between BMI and body image. Participants with a higher BMI identified themselves with a …
