The Other Race Effect : The Role Of Experience And Social Attiudes On Face Recognition, Emily Wheat Aug 2010

The Other Race Effect : The Role Of Experience And Social Attiudes On Face Recognition, Emily Wheat

Master's Theses

The ORE is phenomenon whereby recognition for own race faces is better than recognition of other race faces. This study examines how non-perceptual factors—social context, attitudes, and experience—impact the ORE. Participants from three different racial groups (Caucasian, Black, Asian) completed a face recognition task screening faces for status-specific targets (baseline, perpetrator, victim), self-report measures of explicit bias and experience with members from other races and a measure of implicit bias. Results indicated that non-perceptual factors impact the ORE. Specifically, Caucasian participants revealed a reduced ORE for other race perpetrators in comparison to victims. Black participants revealed a reduced ORE for …

Stimulating Students’ Interest In And Curiosity About Nature Through Frequent And Brief Trips Outdoors, Joanne Claire Kornoelje Aug 2010

Stimulating Students’ Interest In And Curiosity About Nature Through Frequent And Brief Trips Outdoors, Joanne Claire Kornoelje

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This study considers whether frequent and brief trips outdoors can affect students’ interest in and curiosity about nature. Recent research shows that people - and children in specific - are not spending as much time outdoors as in previous generations. This has raised concerns that today’s children will be less likely to champion environmental issues as adults, due to their lack of connection to the environment that surrounds and supports them.

I took my five sixth-grade science classes outdoors eleven times for ten-minute field trips during the 2009-10 school year. Using inquiry-based instruction, the initial trips were focused observation. Subsequent …

Washington State's Duty To Fund K-12 Schools: Where The Legislature Went Wrong And What It Should Do To Meet Its Constitutional Obligation, Daniel C. Stallings Aug 2010

Washington State's Duty To Fund K-12 Schools: Where The Legislature Went Wrong And What It Should Do To Meet Its Constitutional Obligation, Daniel C. Stallings

Washington Law Review

The Washington State Constitution makes education Washington State’s top priority. Article IX, section 1 proclaims that “[i]t is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders . . . .” In the 1978 case of Seattle School District v. State, the Washington State Supreme Court interpreted this language as a command to the state legislature. The Court ordered the legislature to fulfill its constitutional duty by defining and fully funding “basic education” and a “basic program of education.” The legislature attempted to comply by passing and subsequently …

Early 19th Century Marginalization Of David Walker And Nat Turner, Taiyo Davis Aug 2010

Early 19th Century Marginalization Of David Walker And Nat Turner, Taiyo Davis

All Theses

Many authors have examined Nat Turner's Rebellion and David Walker's Appeal in the context of cause and effect. This thesis will demonstrate that similar methods of marginalization were used by the dominant white culture against David Walker and Nat Turner. Instead of accepting the stigma of religious fanaticism that both received for using religion to advocate violence, this thesis will make a defense of Turner's and Walker's use of religion to advocate violence. This thesis also asks unanswered questions and covers untouched aspects of both events which may be explored by future scholars. Moreover, this thesis asserts that more needs …

Sustainable Urban Transport: The Issue Of Equity In The Emerging Bric Countries, Tamara Tavares Aug 2010

Sustainable Urban Transport: The Issue Of Equity In The Emerging Bric Countries, Tamara Tavares

All Theses

Although sustainable frameworks for transportation have been widely discussed in the transportation planning field in recent decades, the issue of equity in transportation systems is still relatively unexplored in comparison to the other pillars of sustainability. Globally, the concept of equity gains different nuances in developed and developing countries, and have yet new implications when considering fast emerging nations. The objective of this paper is to investigate how transit policies in fast emerging economies are used to distribute equitable access to benefits and opportunities; and to derive lessons that can orient future cohorts of emerging cities and countries to use …

Christian Fundamentalism: Militancy And The Scopes Trial, Michael Smith Aug 2010

Christian Fundamentalism: Militancy And The Scopes Trial, Michael Smith

All Theses

The Scopes Trial held in Dayton, Tennessee, lasting for eight days in 1925, is one of the seminal events in American history. Its importance has little to do with the place, but much to do with cultural, political, scientific, and religious trends of the times. Historians extensively studied these trends and volumes were written, filled with their analyses of these trends and why the Scopes Trial represents such an interesting snapshot of history.
This work considers the militancy of the Fundamentalist movement as a definer of religious zeal and a desire to defend publicly what they perceived as an erosion …

A Gis-Based Analysis Of Chickasaw Settlement In Northeast Mississippi: 1650-1840, Wendy Cegiellski Aug 2010

A Gis-Based Analysis Of Chickasaw Settlement In Northeast Mississippi: 1650-1840, Wendy Cegiellski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the early colonial period in the Southeast, the Chickasaw were remarkably successful in their negotiations with Europeans. By the mid-eighteenth-century, their position had been weakened. These changes are reflected in the expansion and contraction of Chickasaw settlement. This analysis uses new temporal and locational data from a large collection of Chickasaw artifacts to create a more precise model of Chickasaw settlement changes over time employing Geographic Information Systems software (ArcGIS 9.3). This analysis also elucidates the complex links between Chickasaw movements and historical factors including warfare and economic change. Both archaeological and historical documentation are used to gain a …

An Intercomparison Of Regional Atmospheric Circulation And The Melt Season Loss Of Arctic Snow Cover And Sea Ice Extent Across The Land–Ocean Boundary, Angela C. Bliss Aug 2010

An Intercomparison Of Regional Atmospheric Circulation And The Melt Season Loss Of Arctic Snow Cover And Sea Ice Extent Across The Land–Ocean Boundary, Angela C. Bliss

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study is designed to compare the monthly continental snow cover and sea ice extent loss in the Arctic with regional atmospheric conditions including: mean sea level pressure, 925 hPa air temperature, and mean wind direction among others during the melt season (March-August) over the 29-year study period 1979-2007. Little research has gone into studying the concurrent variations in the annual loss of continental snow cover and sea ice extent across the land-ocean boundary, since these data are largely stored in incompatible formats. However, the analysis of these data, averaged spatially over three autonomous study regions located in Siberia, North …

Ocean Loading Effects On Stress At Near Shore Plate Boundary Fault Systems, Karen Luttrell, David Sandwell Aug 2010

Ocean Loading Effects On Stress At Near Shore Plate Boundary Fault Systems, Karen Luttrell, David Sandwell

Faculty Publications

Changes in eustatic sea level since the Last Glacial Maximum create a differential load across coastlines globally. The resulting plate bending in response to this load alters the state of stress within the lithosphere within a half flexural wavelength of the coast. We calculate the perturbation to the total stress tensor due to ocean loading in coastal regions. Our stress calculation is fully 3-D and makes use of a semianalytic model to efficiently calculate stresses within a thick elastic plate overlying a viscoelastic or fluid half-space. The 3-D stress perturbation is resolved into normal and shear stresses on plate boundary …

Hotel Feasibility In The Recessionary Economy Of 2010: A Case Study In Reno, Nevada, Sang-Mun Cho

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In the aftermath of the economic crisis of 2008, it became evident that Nevada’s economy felt pains greater than that of the rest of the country. With sinking property values, opportunities may exist for the hotel investor. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the risks and benefits of acquiring a hotel property through the instrumentality of a hotel feasibility report. The literature review includes an evaluation of hotel feasibility analysis, its historical context, criticisms, and recommendations for performing effective studies. The case study part of this paper investigates the broader implications of hotel acquisition in the current recessionary …

Room Rate Parity: A 2010 Study Of U.S. Booking Channels, Neven Sipic Aug 2010

Room Rate Parity: A 2010 Study Of U.S. Booking Channels, Neven Sipic

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Hotel guests are facing a variety of different hotel rates when booking online. The transparency of the Internet is driving hotel prices towards rate parity. This study investigates room rate parity, room and hotel availability, price consistency, and rate guarantee. The study examines 240 property-date combinations, focusing on ten metropolitan areas, using a sample of 120 hotels for two booking dates, and analyzing three hotels per four hotel segments. The results suggest that Orbitz, an indirect distribution channel, is the best choice when booking rooms in budget and midscale market segments. Furthermore, Expedia offers the best room prices for luxury …

A Great Appearance Of Force: Puritan Family Government In Colonial Connecticut, 1672-1725, Alicia Desiree Martin-Cowger Aug 2010

A Great Appearance Of Force: Puritan Family Government In Colonial Connecticut, 1672-1725, Alicia Desiree Martin-Cowger

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to take up Edmund Morgan’s thesis in The Puritan Family that the family incorporated “economic as well as political and ecclesiastical functions” and discover how the Puritan family interacted with social and political structures, in this case religion, belief, and the community, in colonial Connecticut. In order to explore such dynamics, several cases of incest will be explored. Colonial Connecticut’s history of incest prosecution provides a window into the workings of family government and its function in preparing individuals to integrate fully into Puritan society. Even as the American Puritan justice system based on …

Identification Of Geochemical Facies Through Major Ion Data And Additional Parameters From Shallow Groundwater Utilizing A Comparison Of Geomathematics And Traditional Methods In Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, Eric Dano Aug 2010

Identification Of Geochemical Facies Through Major Ion Data And Additional Parameters From Shallow Groundwater Utilizing A Comparison Of Geomathematics And Traditional Methods In Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, Eric Dano

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

There has been little exploration to identify geochemical facies in shallow groundwater in the Las Vegas Valley in Clark County, Nevada. Identification of hydrochemical facies in Las Vegas Valley is important for assessing the extent and nature of a potential groundwater resource. The identification of facies could be complicated by the possibility that secondary recharge constitutes a hydrochemical facies of its own. To identify geochemical facies, groundwater samples for major ions, stable isotopes and some municipal tracers were collected from 35 wells in an established network of monitor wells. Wells were purged with a bailer or 12V pump and EC, …

Lieser On Stevens, 'Radical L.A.: From Coxey's Army To The Watts Riots, 1894-1965', Jordan Lieser

Collected Faculty Scholarship

The city of Los Angeles can be a controversial and polarizing topic. In modern times, it has been criticized as a culturally shallow town filled with Hollywood starlets; however, at the same time, others praise the vast metropolis as a home for political, social, and cultural diversity. Errol Wayne Stevens, the former head of the Seaver Center for Western History Research at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, peels back the historical layers of Los Angeles in Radical L.A., presenting it as a battleground between staunch left- and rightwing coalitions. The very idea of chronicling radicalism is a difficult …

The Racial Geography Of The Federal Death Penalty, G. Ben Cohen, Robert J. Smith Aug 2010

The Racial Geography Of The Federal Death Penalty, G. Ben Cohen, Robert J. Smith

Washington Law Review

Scholars have devoted substantial attention to both the overrepresentation of black defendants on federal death row and the disproportionate number of federal defendants charged capitally for the murder of white victims. This attention has not explained (much less resolved) these disquieting racial disparities. Little research has addressed the unusual geography of the federal death penalty, in which a small number of jurisdictions are responsible for the vast majority of federal death sentences. By addressing the unique geography, we identify a possible explanation for the racial distortions in the federal death penalty: that federal death sentences are sought disproportionately where the …

Voter Bias In The Associated Press College Football Poll, B. Jay Coleman, Andres Gallo, Paul Mason, Jeffrey W. Steagall Aug 2010

Voter Bias In The Associated Press College Football Poll, B. Jay Coleman, Andres Gallo, Paul Mason, Jeffrey W. Steagall

Management Faculty Publications

We investigate multiple biases in the individual weekly ballots submitted by the 65 voters in the Associated Press college football poll in 2007. Using censored tobit modeling, we find evidence of bias toward teams (1) from the voter’s state, (2) in conferences represented in the voter’s state, (3) in selected Bowl Championship Series conferences, and (4) that played in televised games, particularly on relatively prominent networks. We also find evidence of inordinate bias toward simplistic performance measures – number of losses, and losing in the preceding week – even after controlling for performance using mean team strength derived from 16 …

The Role Of Unrealistic Optimism In Explaining Preventive Behaviors In High Versus Low Endemic Malaria Settings In Belize, Daniel G. Handysides Aug 2010

The Role Of Unrealistic Optimism In Explaining Preventive Behaviors In High Versus Low Endemic Malaria Settings In Belize, Daniel G. Handysides

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: Of all the diseases an individual can encounter in the world, malaria is one of the most destructive. Simple measures like sleeping under a bednet would greatly reduce the burden (Abeku, 2007). When people estimate their risk relative to others, they are most often unrealistically optimistic, which may explain why those at risk often fail to perform behaviors, such as using a bednet that will reduce their risk. However, one study showed that people at high risk for malaria held pessimistic perceptions of their risk for the disease, but the reasons for this finding are unclear (Morrison, Ager, & …

Word Order Typology In Modern South Arabian Languages: A Study Based On A Corpus Of Analyzed Texts, David A. Cross Jr. Aug 2010

Word Order Typology In Modern South Arabian Languages: A Study Based On A Corpus Of Analyzed Texts, David A. Cross Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I present a typological analysis of the Modern South Arabian Languages. Typological research is often based on a six-way typology of dominant word order based on clauses containing nominal subjects, objects and verbs. However, this clause type is extremely rare in this language group, making typological analysis based on a six-way typology problematic.

Dryer's Four-way typology of dominant word order is applied to the Modern South Arabian Languages and they are shown to be VS&VO. Greenberg's universals which refer to dominant word order are then reformulated in terms of the Four-way typology. These reformulated universals are shown …

Bid For An International Meeting: A Guide For Taiwanese Associations, Yu-Chun Liu Aug 2010

Bid For An International Meeting: A Guide For Taiwanese Associations, Yu-Chun Liu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The meeting and exhibition industry is commonly referred to the MICE industry because it pertains to meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions. Ancient eastern and medieval European countries were familiar with the practice of conducting meetings centuries ago. However, those meetings were most commonly designed to address the aftermath of war. During the seventeenth century, the Peace of Westphalia, a series of treaties, concluded the Thirty Years War and created a precedent that through large-scale meeting; significantly international problems among countries could be resolved. Until the early nineteenth century, international meetings between countries were popular. The scopes and topics of discussion …

Evaluation Of Natural Remediation Following The Occurrence Of A Construction-Related Sediment Plume At Camp Shelby Training Site, Mississippi, Ian Eli Floyd Aug 2010

Evaluation Of Natural Remediation Following The Occurrence Of A Construction-Related Sediment Plume At Camp Shelby Training Site, Mississippi, Ian Eli Floyd

Master's Theses

This study is a comprehensive look into the response and recovery of an anthropogenic induced sediment infill of a bottom land hardwood wetland at Camp Shelby Training Site (CSTS) in Perry and Forrest Counties, Mississippi. Lack of sediment control structures (sediment fences and matting), combined with high rainfall, led to erosion within and around the Multi Purpose Range Complex-Heavy (MPRC-H) during its construction. Deposition of sediment effected approximately 20.2 hectares of wetlands that have been monitored since the event occurred in 2005. To better understand the recovery process, the study area was compared to the Cypress Creek Mitigation Area (CCMA) …

A 10-Step Process For Environmental Scanning, Lisa A. Guion Aug 2010

A 10-Step Process For Environmental Scanning, Lisa A. Guion

Journal of Extension

This article presents a step-by-step process used in North Carolina Cooperative Extension that provides a practical guide for conducting environmental scans. While easy to use, the methods are grounded in best practices from the current literature and provide a mechanism for gathering triangulated data from both primary and secondary sources that reflects a consensus, if you will, of high priority issues upon which relevant Extension programs can be built. In addition, this process also includes identifying individual and community assets that can be used collectively with Extension efforts to address the issues more comprehensively.

Discussing Indigenous Genocide In Argentina: Past, Present, And Consequences Of Argentinean State Policies Toward Native Peoples, Walter Delrio, Diana Lenton, Marcelo Musante, Marino Nagy Aug 2010

Discussing Indigenous Genocide In Argentina: Past, Present, And Consequences Of Argentinean State Policies Toward Native Peoples, Walter Delrio, Diana Lenton, Marcelo Musante, Marino Nagy

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

For a long time the historiographical and anthropological narrative in Argentina contributed to a double assumption that is nowadays strongly grounded in citizens’ common sense. On the one hand, the extinction of Indigenous peoples is vaguely dated to a period from the Spanish conquest to the military campaigns known as the ‘‘conquest of the desert’’; on the other hand, such extinction is simultaneously interpreted as a ‘‘natural’’ process in universal history. Argentine state policies were thus naturalized. It is frequently assumed that this set of natural processes might have left only individual ‘‘descendants,’’ in place of political entities. There- fore, …

Dilemmas Of Brazilian Grand Strategy, Hal Brands Dr. Aug 2010

Dilemmas Of Brazilian Grand Strategy, Hal Brands Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This monograph analyzes Brazilian grand strategy under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. During Lula’s nearly 8 years in office, he has pursued a multi-tiered grand strategy aimed at hastening the transition from unipolarity to a multipolar order in which international rules, norms, and institutions are more favorable to Brazilian interests. Lula has done so by emphasizing three diplomatic strategies: soft-balancing, coalition-building, and seeking to position Brazil as the leader of a more united South America. This strategy has successfully raised Brazil’s profile and increased its diplomatic flexibility, but it has also exposed the country to four potent strategic dilemmas …

Predictive Habitat Model For The Snapping Shrimp Genus Alpheus In The Coastal Southeastern United States, Laura Catherine Anderson Aug 2010

Predictive Habitat Model For The Snapping Shrimp Genus Alpheus In The Coastal Southeastern United States, Laura Catherine Anderson

Master's Theses

The present study focused on factors influencing Alpheus distribution in the Gulf of Mexico and the northwestern Atlantic Ocean. The objectives were to perform a biogeographical analysis of the currently known Alpheus species distribution, develop a spatially explicit predictive model, and experimentally verify the importance of substrate as a key modeling variable through a laboratory-based substrate choice study. Significant predictor variables included in the final model for the Gulf of Mexico were Shepard code, seabed class, the quadratic artificial reef term, the quadratic shore term, the distance to shore, the indirect predictors of longitude and latitude, and three interaction terms …
