Scholarship In Action And The Public Mission Of Universities, Nancy Cantor Dec 2010

Scholarship In Action And The Public Mission Of Universities, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

At key points in our nation’s history, we’ve turned to our colleges and universities to serve as engines for prosperity and agents of social mobility. This is such a moment. Times are hard, and we are called to help revive our economy and sustain our communities while opening our doors even wider to a whole generation of talented youth: the fast-growing population of students who will be the first in their families to go to college, the sons and daughters of newly immigrated families, veterans returning from post 9/11 conflicts, and the students who are now in often under-resourced inner-city …

A Cross-Sectional Study Of Infant Mortality Rates Between Countries, Katelyn E. May Dec 2010

A Cross-Sectional Study Of Infant Mortality Rates Between Countries, Katelyn E. May

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The health status of nations has been and continues to be under debate. Although the variables that comprise such a status have not been solidified, one variable that is closely studied and is thought to have an effect on the idea of health status is infant mortality. A country’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is treated as an indicator of its health status as well as socioeconomic status. This research attempts to study the variables which are hypothesized to be significant in relation to IMR, and to find which ones truly have an effect. Data on eight independent variables were collected …

Go Ye Out From Babylon: Mormon Gathering As A Reaction To American Culture, 1831-1846, Brady G. Winslow

Student Works

Many have claimed that Mormonism is the American religion. But perphaps they have mistaken American geography for American culture. While early Mormonism took place in America, it can be interpreted as a reaction to American culture, and this is perhaps best seen in the Mormon doctrine of gathering.

Radiative Forcing Over The Conterminous United States Due To Contemporary Land Cover Use Change And Sensitivity To Snow And Interannual Albedo Variability, Christoper A. Barnes, David P. Roy

GSCE Faculty Publications

Satellite‐derived land cover land use (LCLU), snow and albedo data, and incoming surface solar radiation reanalysis data were used to study the impact of LCLU change from 1973 to 2000 on surface albedo and radiative forcing for 58 ecoregions covering 69% of the conterminous United States. A net positive surface radiative forcing (i.e., warming) of 0.029 Wm−2 due to LCLU albedo change from 1973 to 2000 was estimated. The forcings for individual ecoregions were similar in magnitude to current global forcing estimates, with the most negative forcing (as low as −0.367 Wm−2) due to the transition to forest and the …

Geomorphology Of The Lake Shewa Landslide Dam, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, Using Remote Sensing Data, John F. Shroder Jr., Brandon J. Weihs

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Lake Shewa in northeastern Badakhshan, Afghanistan, was dammed sometime in antiquity when a large rock avalanche (sturzstrom) from the fault‐shattered and strongly weathered Archean gneisses of the Zirnokh peaks to the north moved into the Arakht River valley. This rock avalanche dammed up the river and its tributaries to a dam thickness of c. 400 m, producing a 12‐km‐long lake that is as much as 270 m deep, leaving c. 80 m of freeboard to the top of the dam. At least four separate instances of slope failure have been mapped at the site of the landslide dam, …

Towards the turn of the 21st century, America was well into it's third attempt to remedy one of its' major maladies, scholastic insufficiency. In the midst of schools failing to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), decreasing graduation rates, and increasing teacher turn-over rates, stands the school leader. Going Green Down Under: Environmental Communication And Green Product Marketing In The South Eastern Australian Wine Industry, Kevin Michael Visconti

Open Access Dissertations

The consumption of wine has served as an international communication expedient for thousands of years. From classical symposiums of ancient times to religious ceremonies practiced for centuries, wine has played a significant part in countless social gatherings across the ages and continents. Recent growth in international wine trade, however, has impacted an increasingly disrupted natural environment through amplified carbon output, overuse of synthetic chemicals, topsoil erosion, and water mismanagement. Vintners, or winemakers, have been tasked by the implementation of new legal standards, as well as the urging of ecologically aware prospective consumers, to instill a winemaking process that is green, …

A revealing visit to France last month by President Sebastián Piñera has reignited a long smoldering debate in Chile over the "nuclear option." Chile has to prepare itself for the world of nuclear energy," Piñera said following a meeting with his French counterpart President Nicolas Sarkozy. Policy Determinants And Medicaid Managed Care, Diane Elizabeth Brandt Dec 2010

Policy Determinants And Medicaid Managed Care, Diane Elizabeth Brandt

Dissertations

The U.S. Medicaid program is increasingly challenged by reductions in federal entitlement spending, a faltering private sector health insurance base, escalating health care expenditures and an aging and increasingly diverse population. Converging pressures on state Medicaid programs have challenged state policy makers to find new approaches to enhance program efficiency. One of these policy tools is the adoption of Medicaid managed care programs for individuals with chronic illness and disability, particularly important as these enrollees incur the highest health care costs. The increasing prevalence of chronic illness combined with the growth of households in poverty creates significant implications for Medicaid …

The Educational Philosophy And Pedagogical Practices Of Eliza R. Snow, Jolene Merica

Theses and Dissertations

Eliza R. Snow's contributions as an educator have gone largely unexamined yet are an important element of her lifework. An analysis of her writing, both poetic and instructional, as well as minutes and notes from her instructional meetings, supports the view that as an educator Eliza R. Snow had a definite philosophy that informed her educational practice and shaped teaching and learning in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Two articles, one on the educational philosophy of Eliza R. Snow and the other on her pedagogical practices, illuminate her contributions as an educational leader. Snow believed that God's …

Transformative Services And Transformation Design, Daniela Sangiorgi Dec 2010

Transformative Services And Transformation Design, Daniela Sangiorgi

ServDes Conference Series

This paper claims how the parallel evolution of the conception of services and of Design for Services toward more transformational aims; would require a collective reflection on and elaboration of guiding methodological and deontological principles. By illustrating connections with similar evolutions in Participatory Design (from ‘Design for use before use’ to ‘Design for Design after Design’); Public Health Research (patient engagement and ‘empowerment’) and Consumer Research (Transformative Consumer Research); the author identifies key characteristics of transformative practices that ask for more ‘reflexivity’ on the designers’ side. Developing Design profession as contributing to society transformative aims is extremely valuable; but it …

Prior research has shown that small funds, young funds, and local funds outperform their older, larger, and distant counterparts. According to the literature, hedge fund performance is driven by fund capacity constraints, managerial incentives, and local information. I revisit these studies on hedge funds and test whether their results hold up in recent data. By doing so, I lay the foundations for a quantitative hedge fund selection framework.
