Lost On Purpose, Matthew Mccain Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In nine linked nonfiction essays and eight codas, the author seeks to understand the meaning of being lost and the importance of not knowing in an era of instantaneous and ubiquitous information. Through extensive interviews, research, and memoir, the author seeks out those who choose to live lost in order to understand his own penchant for escape. Framed by the mystery of antique maps, these essays find the author in several different locations, from Tasmania to Siberia to Utah. In each, the author meets and spends time with an ambassador of each place before finally attempting to become lost himself.

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Humans have altered natural patterns of fire for millennia, but the impact of human-set fires is thought to have been slight in wet closed-canopy forests. In the South Island of New Zealand, Polynesians (Māori), who arrived 700–800 calibrated years (cal y) ago, and then Europeans, who settled ∼150 cal y ago, used fire as a tool for forest clearance, but the structure and environmental consequences of these fires are poorly understood. High-resolution charcoal and pollen records from 16 lakes were analyzed to reconstruct the fire and vegetation history of the last 1,000 y. Diatom, chironomid, and element concentration data were …

The Ingredients Of Change: A Political Ecology Approach To Diabetes In The Somali Community Of Minnesota, Mina Tehrani Dec 2010

The Ingredients Of Change: A Political Ecology Approach To Diabetes In The Somali Community Of Minnesota, Mina Tehrani

Geography Capstone Projects

In the early 1990’s, due to political circumstances at home, Somali immigrants and refugees began arriving in the state of Minnesota in large numbers. Over the past two decades, Somali immigrants have come to comprise one of the most populous ethnic groups in the Twin Cities, and are the largest Somali population in the world outside of Eastern Africa. Although quantitative data is unavailable, qualitative evidence and testimonies of healthcare professionals support the conclusion that Somali immigrants in Minnesota suffer from higher rates of diabetes than non-immigrant groups and than they likely did before migration. Why might this be the …

A Scholarship Workshop Program To Improve Underrepresented Student Access To Higher Education, Christopher D. Murr Dec 2010

A Scholarship Workshop Program To Improve Underrepresented Student Access To Higher Education, Christopher D. Murr

Journal of Student Financial Aid

This study examines the effectiveness of a scholarship workshop program to better prepare low socio-economic and minority students to compete for collegiate scholarships. The study involves 1,367 high risk 9th to 12th grade students in Texas. Analysis of the pre- and post-tests, using a t-test for dependent variables, indicates a statistically significant improvement in the relevant knowledge of workshop participants. As evidenced by this analysis and other data, the workshop program is very successful in educating high risk students about the steps necessary to develop a competitive scholarship application that can increase their chances of accessing a higher education.

The Use Of General Land Office Records And Geographical Information Systems For Restoration Of Native Prairie Patches In The Jackson Prairie Region In Mississippi, Michael Tobit Gray Dec 2010

The Use Of General Land Office Records And Geographical Information Systems For Restoration Of Native Prairie Patches In The Jackson Prairie Region In Mississippi, Michael Tobit Gray

Theses and Dissertations

The Jackson Prairie Region represents a rare, poorly understood and threatened ecosystem. A review of the literature concerning the ecology, physiography and geology of the Region was undertaken, along with a search of General Land Office (GLO) records for locations of historic prairie patches. The prairie patch location data was transcribed, digitized and inserted as a base map in a Geographical Information System (GIS). A set of current, local conditions indicating suitability for conservation or restoration, along with importance weights for each condition, was derived from stakeholder input. A simple additive weighting technique was used to rank the locations in …

Spatio-Temporal Characteristics Of Mississippi Wildfires, Saranee Dutta Dec 2010

Spatio-Temporal Characteristics Of Mississippi Wildfires, Saranee Dutta

Theses and Dissertations

Based on wildfire data acquired from Mississippi forestry commission from 1991- 2005 approximately 4,000 wildfires occur in Mississippi each year, burning over 60,000 acres of forest and grassland. This study focuses on Mississippi’s wildfires from 1991- 2005 for the summer/fall period defined for this study as the May-November fire season. Statistical analysis indicates that there is significant correlation between vegetation indices derived from remotely sensed data and wildfire size at various time lag periods. Forest areas are correlated with vegetation indices at longer lag periods, nonorested areas are correlated at shorter lag periods. The inverse correlation between wildfire size and …

Preservation And Growth Strategies For The Randolph County Archives Of Oral History: Using The Oral History Evaluation Guidelines To Improve A Pre-Existing Program, Derek Allen Clements

Student Theses and Dissertations

Founded in 2006 in Pocahontas, Arkansas, the Randolph County of Oral History (RCAOH) sough to collect the stories of Randolph County's elderly residents in conjunction with the Pocahontas sesquicentennial celebration. After the formation of the Randolph County Heritage Museum (RCHM), the RCAOH was placed under its care. The success of programs and displays developed at the RCHM overshadowed the RCAOH. Forgotten, it was left virtually unattended. Attempting to salvage the program, Clements used the Oral History Association's Oral History and Evaluation Guidelines to analyze the condition of the RCAOH. Identifying a number of areas for improvement, plans were developed to …

Distribution And Molecular Analysis Of Avian Malaria Vectors On Four Central Virginia Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria Citrea) Breeding Sites, Catherine Wallace Dec 2010

Distribution And Molecular Analysis Of Avian Malaria Vectors On Four Central Virginia Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria Citrea) Breeding Sites, Catherine Wallace

Theses and Dissertations

Avian malaria is a devastating disease that has decimated numerous bird species. This study sought to identify the vectors of avian malaria at four central Virginia Prothonotary warbler breeding sites. Twenty one thousand mosquitoes were collected and Culex salinarius, Cx. erraticus, and Cx. pipiens/restuans were found to be the dominant species at these sites. Geographic factors, such as crop land and forest type, were determined to be potential indicators for species abundance variation between sites. Of the mosquitoes collected, ninety one (0.4%) were identified as blood fed. The blood fed mosquitoes were found to have fed on avian, mammalian, amphibian, …

Replicating Success: Developing An Educational Process For Improving Nursing Accuracy When Using A Patient Classification System, Dewey M. Moulton Dec 2010

Replicating Success: Developing An Educational Process For Improving Nursing Accuracy When Using A Patient Classification System, Dewey M. Moulton

Theses and Graduate Projects

The use of patient classification systems (PCS), within hospitals has been and still is utilized primarily for determining staffing requirements, based upon the projected needs of the patient. Since its conception in the 1950's, health care management has worked to develop a system that accurately depicts those needs to provide good patient care. Recently, a major tertiary health care center located in the Midwest region of the United States implemented a revised patient classification system within its acute care setting. Nurses were provided various levels of education regarding its use. Because of this, accuracy by nurses using the patient classification …
