Therapist Self-Disclosure : A Current Look At Therapists' Attitudes And Practices : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Allyson Lynn Mazzuchi Sep 2010

Therapist Self-Disclosure : A Current Look At Therapists' Attitudes And Practices : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Allyson Lynn Mazzuchi

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to examine the current views of therapist selfdisclosure among clinicians practicing in the field today. The study examined what factors effect self-disclosure, such as a therapist's years of experience, the population they are working with and their own experience in therapy. Therapists who participated had to have a minimum of five years working in the mental health field. Sixty-two therapists participated by filling out an anonymous survey. Therapists rated how often they used self-disclosure. Next therapists answered questions regarding how and when they decided to use self-disclosure and what their own experiences were with self-disclosure in …

Assembling Caliban: French And Other European Depictions Of American Bodies In The Sixteenth Century, Matthew Berch Sep 2010

Assembling Caliban: French And Other European Depictions Of American Bodies In The Sixteenth Century, Matthew Berch

History ETDs

The present study elucidates several of the key tropes and figures employed by a select group of French and European commentators and artists in their attempt to contextualize New World discovery. Utilizing travel narratives, voyager reports, and literary materials, this study traces a specific thematic genealogy from the late thirteenth century to the end of the Renaissance. Over a period of three hundred plus years, various European texts from Mandevilles Travels to The Tempest depicted European encounters with foreign bodies. While descriptions varied, certain recurring themes and tropes gradually developed as European explorers expanded the scope of their ethno-geographic inquiry. …

Nowhere Man: Autoethnographic Reflections On Identity, Family, And Leadership., Tracy John Skipp Sep 2010

Nowhere Man: Autoethnographic Reflections On Identity, Family, And Leadership., Tracy John Skipp

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of this self study was to discover the values and attitudes I model as a leader to support people in doing their best work. Specifically, do I practice leadership intimacy as defined in this study? Leadership intimacy is defined by addressing these research questions: What values do I lead by? And, what attitudes and practices do I model as a leader? Autoethnography is a qualitative genre of research I used in this study. It describes the researcher and his or her personal experiences within a social context, in this case a research university. Autoethnography is often described as …

Rethinking Hydrophilanthropy: Smart Money For Transformative Impact, Edward D. Breslin Sep 2010

Rethinking Hydrophilanthropy: Smart Money For Transformative Impact, Edward D. Breslin

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The water sector is dominated by a handful of images – poor people collecting water from unprotected sources, or the converse of a happy child lapping fresh water from a newly provided water source. While compelling, this imagery is not entirely accurate. Sadly, the water sector does not have a particularly good track record of transformative success, despite the rhetoric and imagery to the contrary. A better picture might be one of a woman walking past a broken water point, on her way back to the polluted water source she had hoped was abandoned forever. The water sector needs to …

On The Green Side Of Trade Competitiveness? Environmental Policies And Innovation In The Eu, Valeria Costantini, Massimiliano Mazzanti Sep 2010

On The Green Side Of Trade Competitiveness? Environmental Policies And Innovation In The Eu, Valeria Costantini, Massimiliano Mazzanti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper aims to explore how the competitiveness of the EU economy, here captured by export dynamics over the medium run (1996-2007), has been affected by environmental regulation both on the public and private sector side. The strong and weak versions of the Porter hypothesis are tested by specifying the export dynamics of five aggregated manufacturing sectors classified by their technological or environmental content using a dynamic panel data estimator applied to a theoretically-based gravity model. When testing the strong version on export performances of manufacturing sectors, the overall effect of environmental policies does not conflict with export competitiveness. When …

The History Of The Federal Government's Involvement In Water Resources : An Attempt To Correct Externalities?, Alyssa M. Neir Sep 2010

The History Of The Federal Government's Involvement In Water Resources : An Attempt To Correct Externalities?, Alyssa M. Neir

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Federal government can undermine or support state water laws and programs by asserting its legislative power to manage domestic water resources. Predicting the future thrust of the Federal government's legislative involvement in water resources can help states build flexibility into their plans and anticipate where they may be able to get Federal funds to accomplish their water management plans. This paper applies the economic concept of technological externalities to predict that future Federal involvement. The hypothesis of this paper has two parts: 1) that in addition to becoming involved in water resources management to provide public goods and promote …

Minimum Wage States During Recession, Leila Burrows Sep 2010

Minimum Wage States During Recession, Leila Burrows

Economics ETDs

This study analyzes the effect of minimum wage legislation during a period of economic recession. In particular, I examine whether states with minimum wages higher than the federal minimum wage fared better or worse during the recession that began December 2007. Since minimum wages raise the price of labor above market price, firms subject to this additional cost might experience greater adverse effects of the recession. On the other hand, since state minimum wages are often enacted in states with relatively high market wages, the disemployment effects of minimum wage legislation might be negligible. Despite a large increase in minimum …

Kit Carson's Last Fight: The Adobe Walls Campaign Of 1864, David Pafford Sep 2010

Kit Carson's Last Fight: The Adobe Walls Campaign Of 1864, David Pafford

History ETDs

In the fall of 1864, Brigadier General James H. Carleton sent Kit Carson and about four hundred men on a punitive campaign against the Kiowa and Comanche Indians of the high plains. The resulting battle was one of the largest in the history of North American Indian Wars. Yet this conflict has been relegated to historical obscurity. In this paper, I examine why Kit Carson's 1864 Adobe Walls Campaign is forgotten, I measure the success of the mission, and place it in the larger context of nineteenth century Indian Wars, particularly those prosecuted against plains tribes.

Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History Of Contraceptives In The United States, 1873—2010, Sarah Ruth Payne Sep 2010

Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History Of Contraceptives In The United States, 1873—2010, Sarah Ruth Payne

History ETDs

I argue in my dissertation, 'Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History of Contraceptives in the United States, 1873—2010,' that through the processes of contraceptive production, consumption, and disposal, over time, the role of contraceptives in human/nature interactions has become more significant and the impact more direct. I examine the production, consumption, and disposal histories of condoms, diaphragms and cervical caps, intrauterine devices, and hormonal birth control. Production, consumption, and disposal of the birth control methods I study have determined physical experiences with both our bodies and with the non-human natural world, but those three processes have also shaped discourse …

An Ethnographic Exploration Of Parental Beliefs Of Migrant Farm Worker Parents, Alexis Marie Newton

Nursing ETDs

The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the health beliefs of migrant farm worker parents in their own words. The concepts of health beliefs were explored using the qualitative research design of ethnography. A purposive sample consisted of twenty migrant farm worker parents ranging in age from 19 to 50 working in Weld County in north central Colorado. Data collection took place over a 2 month period during growing season. Data were generated using the following techniques: interviews, field notes, and journaling. Ethnographic analysis yielded themes and sub-themes from the data. The overarching theme is the migrant …

In Search Of Local News, Tina Marsh Sep 2010

In Search Of Local News, Tina Marsh

Theses

A 60-item mail survey of registered voters in two Rochester, N.Y.-area communities (n=185) assessed differences between information- and entertainment-seeking tendencies of those who use online and/or print media for local news. The research concluded that respondents with high information-seeking scores are not only using print media but also online media. In addition, online-only users showed a significant tendency for entertainment-seeking but not information-seeking. The study occurred amid the print newspapers' fight to survive by launching or upgrading online counterparts. This research also discusses the implications of the findings for public discourse, a role traditionally played by local print newspapers.

Proximity To Power: How People Keep Governments Honest, Knowledge@Smu Sep 2010

Proximity To Power: How People Keep Governments Honest, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

It is widely accepted that governments are likelier to cater to majority needs. However, history has shown, time and again, that unhappy minorities are a force to be reckoned with. Inequality, on top of an absence of channels by which people may voice their needs and discontent, will motivate insurrections – especially if the dissenting minorities are concentrated within the country's capital city. According to a study conducted by assistant professors Do Quoc-Anh and Filipe Campante from SMU and Harvard University respectively, an "honest", accountable government may have just as much to do with geography as it does with leadership. …

Early School Leaving : An Exploration Of The Factors Contributing To School Non-Completion, Jennifer Mcgarr Sep 2010

Early School Leaving : An Exploration Of The Factors Contributing To School Non-Completion, Jennifer Mcgarr

Dissertations

This study is of an explorative nature, investigating early school leaving in Ireland today. Despite a range of interventions to address school non-completion, approximately 14% of students (as of 2007) continue to leave school without completing their education every year (Byrne & Smyth, 2010). A disproportionate amount of these young people come from disadvantaged backgrounds (Barnardos, 2006). Education is a powerful predicator of life chances and opportunities. Those who leave school with little or no formal education have less opportunities in later life, are more likely to be unemployed, have lower levels of general health and are at a greater …

Rural America: A Look Beyond The Images, John A. Gale Ms Sep 2010

Rural America: A Look Beyond The Images, John A. Gale Ms

Access / Insurance

The issues faced by patients and providers in rural health care differ greatly from those of urban counterparts. They also differ across rural communities. Understanding these differences, and the differences among rural populations across America, is critical to providing health services to rural Americans, who are often impeded by economic factors, cultural and social differences, educational shortcomings and isolation in their efforts to lead normal, healthy lives. The challenges provide opportunities for Catholic health care to make a difference in the lives and health of some of the nation's most vulnerable citizens.

What Should Organized Human Rights Activism In Africa Become? Contributory Insights From A Comparison Of Ngos And Labor-Led Movements In Nigeria, Obiora Chinedu Okafor Sep 2010

What Should Organized Human Rights Activism In Africa Become? Contributory Insights From A Comparison Of Ngos And Labor-Led Movements In Nigeria, Obiora Chinedu Okafor

Buffalo Human Rights Law Review

What, if anything, might the significantly greater success of Labor-led human rights movements in Nigeria, as compared to the performance of the self-described human rights NGOs that also operate in that country, tell us about the ways to optimize organized human rights activism in Nigeria, and perhaps in the rest of the African continent? This is the central question that animates this article. After a review of the character of and modes of struggle employed by, both kinds of human rights groups, the article argues that the important institutional and conceptual differences that exist between Labor and the NGOs explain …
