New Learning, New Scholarship, New Spaces: Creating Dynamic Physical Environments, Laurie Alexander, Barbara Macadam Nov 2010

New Learning, New Scholarship, New Spaces: Creating Dynamic Physical Environments, Laurie Alexander, Barbara Macadam

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008

Learning spaces, such as lecture halls, teaching laboratories, and quiet study nooks are still needed, but no longer fulfill the full range of students’ needs. As students choose to learn in dynamic environments, they need spaces that support intellectual curiosity and facilitate critical inquiry. By implementing a full spectrum of learning spaces, the University of Michigan Library reinforced the message that we are the place on campus where emerging information technologies, rich information resources, and user-focused services come together to support learning and scholarship. This presentation will provide critical concepts that are important to consider when transforming library spaces.

Act 4: How The Land Looks (C. 30,000 Bce-1984), James Smith Allen Nov 2010

Act 4: How The Land Looks (C. 30,000 Bce-1984), James Smith Allen

A Privileged Past

Act 4 of "A Privileged Past" shifts its focus from the author and his experiences to his wife, Anne Winston, and her family, especially on the high plains of Oklahoma and the Pacific shores of southern California. This woman’s parents were descended from tenacious farmers, circuit preachers, and committed teachers. Arising out of a dysfunctional family, however, Winston’s quest for control over her personal life was located in educational and professional achievement in German Studies before 1984. The dominant metaphor of this chapter concerns sight, a natural sensibility that the protagonist has sharpened over years with her acute visual memory.

Community Development Authorities, Andrew A. Painter Nov 2010

Community Development Authorities, Andrew A. Painter

University of Richmond Law Review

Today, CDAs of varying sizes and purposes have been authorized by at least fourteen Virginia localities, and approximately twenty have issued bonds." Despite progress, CDAs occupy anarea of Virginia law largely in its infancy. Case law directly related to their use remains limited, and many localities remain uncertain about their use since the unique marriage of private development and public power inherent in the CDA process has, at times, fostered controversy and apprehension. While this article does not directly address the public policy implications of using CDAs to finance infrastructure, the author hopes this review will generate further ideas for …

Effects Of Hurricane Katrina And Salvage Logging On Bachman's Sparrow, Matthew E. Brooks, Philip C. Stouffer Nov 2010

Effects Of Hurricane Katrina And Salvage Logging On Bachman's Sparrow, Matthew E. Brooks, Philip C. Stouffer

Faculty Publications

In the southeastern U. S., longleaf pine savannas, important habitat for grassland birds, are subject to hurricanes and subsequent management. The intensity of tropical storms is predicted to increase with climate change, heightening the importance of understanding the effects of storm disturbance and salvage logging on species of concern such as Bachman's Sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis), a pine-savanna specialist. To determine how Bachman's Sparrow occupancy varies with the age and salvage history of pine stands, and to identify the vegetation and post-hurricane habitat features influencing stand occupancy, we surveyed Bachman's Sparrows in Mississippi savannas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Our point counts …

A Pragmatic Assessment Of Government Support For Organic Agriculture In Ireland, Leslie Duram Nov 2010

A Pragmatic Assessment Of Government Support For Organic Agriculture In Ireland, Leslie Duram

Publications

Drawing on a pragmatic approach, this paper provides an analysis of governmental support for organic farming in Ireland. There are varying levels of encouragement and programmes provided to farmers in their conversion from conventional to organic production, and in their maintenance of organic production. Support policies vary across regions and are linked to European Union legislation, thus it is challenging to document the many types of support in place. This research investigates relevant technical, financial, and policy support available to organic farmers in Ireland. This exploratory study develops an assessment of Ireland within eight key categories of organic agricultural support: …

Distribution And Genetic Structure Of Pocket Gophers (Genus Geomys) In Kansas, Zachary J. Schwenke Nov 2010

Distribution And Genetic Structure Of Pocket Gophers (Genus Geomys) In Kansas, Zachary J. Schwenke

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The development of informed management practices and insightful research depends not only on an understanding of species natural history and ecology, but information regarding the distributions of these species and how they interact with adjacent taxa. The study of a species distribution can become complicated if the geographic variation within the species is not understood. Pocket gophers, including those in the genus Geomys, display morphological and chromosomal variation across their range, even within the same species. Genetic techniques, including Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP), have clarified population relationships and characterized zones of contact. Previous studies have suggested 2 species and …

Spatial Similarities And Differences Of Attributes Of Three Subwatersheds Within The Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed And Their Relationship To Instream Total Suspended Solids, Dustin Fross Nov 2010

Spatial Similarities And Differences Of Attributes Of Three Subwatersheds Within The Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed And Their Relationship To Instream Total Suspended Solids, Dustin Fross

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The objective of this study was to spatially analyze the attributes of three subwatersheds, Hydrological Unit Code 12 (HUC 12), of the Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed in west-central Kansas and relate the variances of the attributes to the concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS) entering the Smoky Hill River during storm events. This was accomplished by comparing land cover, including cropland, grassland, and urban factors; agricultural practices, such as tillage methods, condition of terraces, and the presence of grass waterways; geomorphology, including soil types, topography, and visible erosion; and lastly, precipitation variance. The three HUC 12s that were studied …

Partnership For The Americas: Western Hemisphere Strategy And U.S. Southern Command, James G. Stavridis Nov 2010

Partnership For The Americas: Western Hemisphere Strategy And U.S. Southern Command, James G. Stavridis

Books

Since its creation in 1963, United States Southern Command has been led by 30 senior officers representing all four of the armed forces. None has undertaken his leadership responsibilities with the cultural sensitivity and creativity demonstrated by Admiral Jim Stavridis during his tenure in command.

Breaking with tradition, Admiral Stavridis discarded the customary military model as he organized the Southern Command Headquarters. In its place he created an organization designed not to subdue adversaries, but instead to build durable and enduring partnerships with friends. His observation that it is the business of Southern Command to launch “ideas not missiles” into …

Global Commons And Domain Interrelationships: Time For A New Conceptual Framework?, Mark E. Redden, Michael P. Hughes Nov 2010

Global Commons And Domain Interrelationships: Time For A New Conceptual Framework?, Mark E. Redden, Michael P. Hughes

Strategic Forums

This Strategic Forum argues that U.S. national security strategy must evolve to address challenges across the global commons — including the sea, air, space, and cyber domains — which are increasingly contested by state and non-state actors. The authors propose a new conceptual framework for understanding domain interrelationships and how operations in one domain can affect access and security in others. By emphasizing assured access and cross-domain integration, the paper outlines strategic and policy implications for defense planning, operational readiness, and long-term deterrence in an interconnected global threat environment.

Asian International Student Transition To High School In Canada, Natalee Popadiuk Nov 2010

Asian International Student Transition To High School In Canada, Natalee Popadiuk

The Qualitative Report

There is a paucity of studies conducted with unaccompanied adolescent international students. In this qualitative inquiry, I present a thematic analysis of the critical incidents that Chinese, Japanese, and Korean participants reported as either facilitating or hindering to their transition to Canada. Using the Critical Incident Technique, I conducted semi-structured interviews with 21 participants aged 15 to 18 years who were attending three public secondary schools in Vancouver, Canada. I present the findings of seven thematic categories: making decisions, experiencing dilemmas, receiving advice, receiving help, impressed with environment, experiencing local annoyances, and participation in activities. Finally, I address the implications …

Heavy Metal Concentrations In Water And Surface Sediments Of Wilgreen Lake, Madison County, Kentucky, Chad Von Gruenigen, Walter S. Borowski Nov 2010

Heavy Metal Concentrations In Water And Surface Sediments Of Wilgreen Lake, Madison County, Kentucky, Chad Von Gruenigen, Walter S. Borowski

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Heavy metal pollution remains a problem in natural waters, particularly for localities near plausible anthropogenic sources. We assayed the level of heavy metals in surface waters and within surface sediments of Wilgreen Lake, whose watershed drains industrial, urban, and residential areas near Richmond, Kentucky.

Water samples were treated according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protocols and digested with trace-metal-grade nitric and hydrochloric acids. Sediment samples were collected with a grab sampler and digested using established EPA procedures with hydrogen peroxide and trace-metal-grade nitric acid. Both water samples and sediment samples were sent to Activation Laboratories for analysis, and were measured …

Patterns Of Heavy Metal Concentration In Core Sediments, Wilgreen Lake, Madison County, Kentucky, Clint Mcmaine, Walter S. Borowski

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Elevated levels of cadmium, copper, lead, and nickel were found within the waters of Wilgreen Lake during a preliminary survey in 2007. Accumulation of heavy metals in freshwater systems is a known problem. Heavy metals enter the lake in the dissolved phase or adsorbed onto sediment particles and may be linked to industries within the lake’s watershed. Under certain geochemical conditions such as anoxia, heavy metals may detach from sediment particles and diffuse into overlying lake waters, causing a renewed influx of heavy metals into the ecosystem. We hypothesize that heavy metals should decrease in concentration upcore as a result …

Developing Proactive Methods For General Aviation Data Collection, Scott Shappell, Carla Hackworth, Kali Holcomb, John Lanicci, Massoud Bazargan, Jaclyn Baron, Rebecca Iden, Daniel Halperin

Publications

Introduction. Over the last 20 years, nearly 40,000 general aviation (GA) aircraft were involved in accidents, roughly 20% of which were fatal. To address this safety concern, scientists have often relied on accident data. Because of the rare nature of accidents, commercial aviation incident and near miss data may prove to be useful sources of safety information. In one such study, the National Transportation Safety Board interviewed GA pilots that were flying near a weather-related accident in pursuit of a different perspective than that of the accident pilot. Interviewing GA pilots about their own weather-related event may provide similar …

The Evolution Of A Coding Schema In A Paced Program Of Research, Charlene A. Winters, Shirley Curney, Therese Sullivan Nov 2010

The Evolution Of A Coding Schema In A Paced Program Of Research, Charlene A. Winters, Shirley Curney, Therese Sullivan

The Qualitative Report

A major task involved in the management, analysis, and integration of qualitative data is the development of a coding schema to facilitate the analytic process. Described in this paper is the evolution of a coding schema that was used in the analysis of qualitative data generated from online forums of middle-aged women with chronic conditions who participated in a computer support intervention in the rural west. The coding schema evolved over three phases of the research project and included coding tree nodes based on study-driven categories and nodes that arose from the data and changes in conceptual thinking. This paper …

Climate Change And The Green Energy Paradox: The Consequences For Twaite Shad Alosa Fallax From The River Severn, U.K., Mw Aprahamian, Cd Aprahamian, Am Knights

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

A stock–recruitment model with a temperature component was used to estimate the effect of an increase in temperature predicted by climate change projections on population persistence and distribution of twaite shad Alosa fallax. An increase of 1 and 2° C above the current mean summer (June to August) water temperature of 17·8° C was estimated to result in a three and six-fold increase in the population, respectively. Climate change is also predicted to result in an earlier commencement to their spawning migration into fresh water. The model was expanded to investigate the effect of any additional mortality that might arise …

International Business Travel In The Global Economy, J.V. Beaverstock, B. Derudder, J. Faulconbridge, F. Witlox (Eds.), Terence Ping Ching Fan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Business travel accounts for a disproportionately large share of revenue and profit to transport service providers, and is therefore an important topic. However, few studies on international travels focus squarely on business travellers because these individuals are inherently difficult to identify: they do not always travel in business cabins (p. 79) and it is increasingly difficult to quantify the duration and function of business trips as travellers build in extra time to allow for flight delays or for other leisure activities (p. 69). Scholars of transport studies, especially air transport specialists, geographers, sociologists, and to a lesser extent, marketers of …

Introduction: Culture, Economy, Policy: Trends And Developments, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The important nexus between culture and economy is by no means a recent development nor a novel inclusion on the social science agenda. As Harvey pointed out in his foreword to Zukin's (1988)Loft Living, the artist, as one `representative' of the cultural class, has always shared a position in the market system, whether as artisans or as “cultural producers working to the command of hegemonic class interest”. In the last two to three decades, in the US and more lately, in western Europe, cultural activities have become increasingly significant in the economic regeneration strategies in many cities. Geographers, however, have …
