Facilitating Factors And Barriers To Bmi Screening In Schools, Ann M. Stalter, Rosemary V. Chaudry, Barbara J. Polivka Jan 2010

Facilitating Factors And Barriers To Bmi Screening In Schools, Ann M. Stalter, Rosemary V. Chaudry, Barbara J. Polivka

Nursing Faculty Publications

The National Association of School Nurses advocates for body mass index (BMI) screening. Little research describes school nurse practice of BMI screening. In this descriptive study, 25 Ohio school nurses participated in three focus groups. An adapted Healthy People 2010 Determinants of Health Model guided the research questions. School nurses engaged in multiphasic data collection which was contingent on physical environment, workload, and referrals. Lack of system policy was key barrier in terms of data collection, referral, and follow-up. A key facilitating factor was physical education teachers in terms of reinforcing health. School size and privacy were components of school …

On The Origin Of Species Through Heteropatric Differentiation: A Review And A Model Of Speciation In Migratory Animals, Kevin Winker Jan 2010

On The Origin Of Species Through Heteropatric Differentiation: A Review And A Model Of Speciation In Migratory Animals, Kevin Winker

Ornithological Monographs

Differentiation and speciation without extended isolation appear to be common among migratory animals. Historical oversight of this is probably due to temporal distortion in distribution maps and a tendency to consider that lineages had different historical traits, such as being sedentary or much less mobile. Mobility among cyclic migrants makes population isolation difficult, and diminished levels of intraspecific differentiation occur in avian migrants (I term this "Montgomery's rule"). Nevertheless, many lineages have differentiated despite increased mobility and a high propensity for gene flow, conditions that speciation theory has not addressed adequately. Populations of seasonal migrants usually occur in allopatry and …

Subspecific Status And Population Genetic Structure Of Least Terns (Sternula Antillarum) Inferred By Mitochondrial Dna Control-Region Sequences And Microsatellite Dna, Hope M. Draheim, Mark P. Miller, Patricia Baird, Susan M. Haig Jan 2010

Subspecific Status And Population Genetic Structure Of Least Terns (Sternula Antillarum) Inferred By Mitochondrial Dna Control-Region Sequences And Microsatellite Dna, Hope M. Draheim, Mark P. Miller, Patricia Baird, Susan M. Haig

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The taxonomic identity of endangered populations of the Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) has long been debated. Their current conservation status provides even more impetus to examine the taxonomic distinctness of these groups. We used rapidly evolving mitochondrial DNA control-region sequences (840 base pairs; n = 188) and microsatellite DNA data (7 loci; n = 417) to examine genetic structure within and among three subspecies that occur within the United States: California Least Tern (S. a. browni), Interior Least Tern (S. a. athalassos), and Eastern Least Tern (S. a. antillarum). Although significant genetic …

Verbena Gardens had been working for months on its new product in its offices at Kost Properties' Southwest Suites when the burglary occurred, sometime between 8:00 and 10:00 at night. The case was never solved; Verbena's property was never recovered. While the burglary pushed the project back by months, the market moved on, and the promising new product was scuttled.

Application Of Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (Pxrf) For Heavy Metal Analysis Of Soils In Crop Fields Near Abandoned Mine Sites, M. Jang

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

To get representative soil samples, a sampling method was verified for crop fields in the vicinity of abandoned mine sites. Application of appropriate sampling or analytical methods is very important as it affects the costs, time, and accuracy of the refined investigation of soil contamination. Two-time sampling for each crop field was conducted to verify the reproducibility of a zigzag method for soil sampling. The soil analysis using a portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) device was conducted to measure concentrations of metal species in soils, and its results were compared to the extracted concentrations by the Korean Standard Test (KST) for …

Indoor-Breeding Of Aedes Albopictus In Northern Peninsular Malaysia And Its Potential Epidemiological Implications, H. Dieng, R.G.M. Saifur, A.A. Hassan, M.R.C. Salmah, M. Boots, T. Satho, Z. Jaal, Sazaly Abubakar

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

BACKGROUND: The mosquito Ae. albopictus is usually adapted to the peri-domestic environment and typically breeds outdoors. However, we observed its larvae in most containers within homes in northern peninsular Malaysia. To anticipate the epidemiological implications of this indoor-breeding, we assessed some fitness traits affecting vectorial capacity during colonization process. Specifically, we examined whether Ae. albopictus exhibits increased survival, gonotrophic activity and fecundity due to the potential increase in blood feeding opportunities. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a series of experiments involving outdoors and indoors breeding populations, we found that Ae. albopictus lives longer in the indoor environment. We also observed increased nighttime …

Seroprevalence Of Toxocariasis Among Orang Asli (Indigenous People) In Malaysia Using Two Immunoassays, N. Romano, M. O. N. Azah, N. Rahmah, Y. A. L. Lim, M. Rohela

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Toxocariasis is a zoonotic helminthic infection of humans caused by the dog roundworm (Toxocara canis) or cat roundworm (Toxocara cati). There are two main human syndromes: visceral larva migrans (VLM), which are characterized by symptoms associated with major organs and ocular larva migrans (OLM), in which pathological effects on the host are restricted to the eye and the optic nerve. The present study evaluated the seroprevalence of toxocariasis among the Orang Asli with an IgG4-ELISA using recombinant antigens (rTES-26, rTES-30 and rTES-120) and an IgG-ELISA commercial kit (Cypress Diagnostic, Belgium). A total of 188 serum samples were analyzed using IgG4-ELISA …

Weeding The Reference Collection : Updating And Upgrading Of The University Of Malaya Reference Collection At The Main Library, J. Sinnasamy

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The reference collection at the University of Malaya Library was reviewed intensely for the first time since its inception. It was a major task to review the entire print reference collection which amounted to over 7,000 titles. About RM300,000.00 was allocated for this purpose and a taskforce was setup to update and upgrade the reference collection during the semester break of the 2008/2009 academic session. The collection now consists of materials published in year 2000 and above. However, books of high value despite the age have been retained. The updated reference collection has been relocated to another floor to give …

Identification Of Important Factors For Office Space Decision By Tenants In Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Malaysia - Experts' View, Y. Mohd Adnan, M.N. Daud Jan 2010

Identification Of Important Factors For Office Space Decision By Tenants In Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Malaysia - Experts' View, Y. Mohd Adnan, M.N. Daud

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

While the central business district (CBD) in most cities is referred to as the heart of the city, the development strategy within the Kuala Lumpur city centre area is to have a moderate commercial growth. This is to curb the oversupply of commercial space and attracting quality development with the aim of enhancing Kuala Lumpur's role as an international and financial centre. As the Kuala Lumpur city centre has the most concentration of office space in Malaysia, it would be useful to identify the factors which would attract and retain tenants for the existing office buildings in the area. It …

Whither Sub-Regional Cooperation? The China-Clmv Trade Perspective, E.S. Devadason Jan 2010

Whither Sub-Regional Cooperation? The China-Clmv Trade Perspective, E.S. Devadason

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Recent debates advocate that closer sub-regional trade cooperation may be an excellent start to stronger regional cooperation. The study investigates this proposition for the case of CLMV countries that remain less integrated into the ASEAN region. In this respect, the China-CLMV bilateral trade flows are examined prior to detailing the role of China as a core trade partner to the periphery of CLMV in enhancing trade expansion within the context of intra-ASEAN regional and intra-GMS sub-regional synergies. The key findings of the study are: First, there are negative effects of China-CLMV trade collaboration, whereby the export potential particularly for agricultural …

Impersonal Jurisdiction, Allan Erbsen Jan 2010

Impersonal Jurisdiction, Allan Erbsen

Articles

Constitutional law governing personal jurisdiction in state courts inspires fascination and consternation. Courts and commentators recognize the issue’s importance, but cannot agree on the purpose that limits on personal jurisdiction serve, which clauses in the Constitution (if any) supply those limits, and whether current doctrine implementing those limits is coherent. This Article seeks to reorient the discussion by developing a framework for thinking about why and how the Constitution regulates personal jurisdiction. It concludes that principles animating the emerging field of horizontal federalism - the constitutional relationship between states - should guide jurisdictional rules and instigate sweeping reevaluation of modern …

Returning Home: Women In Post-Conflict Societies, Naomi Cahn, Dina Francesca Haynes, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin

Articles

This paper explores the situation of women returning to their homes and communities after their countries have experienced major conflicts. In that context, it assesses the range of barriers and challenges that women face and offers some thinking to addresses and remedy these complex issues. As countries face the transition process, they can begin to measure the conflict’s impact on the population and the civil infrastructure. Not only have people been displaced from their homes, but, typically, health clinics, schools, roads, businesses, and markets have deteriorated substantially. While the focus is on humanitarian aid in the midst of and during …

Sustainable Economic Development In Energy Rich Economies: A Regional Approach, Hodjat Ghadimi Jan 2010

Sustainable Economic Development In Energy Rich Economies: A Regional Approach, Hodjat Ghadimi

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

There is an extensive literature on or relating to development issues of energy rich economies – particularly those in the developing world. While national-level studies abound, the analyses of these economies at a regional level or with a regional and spatial perspective are scarce. Generally, a bottom up regional approach to development and the value of insights that regional models and comparative regional studies provide have not received sufficient attention in the field of development economics. Analyzing development sustainability in energy rich economies at a regional scale may provide insights not otherwise possible. National scale studies and models are mostly …

For Home And Country Confederate Nationalism In Western North Carolina, Hunter D. Shaw Jan 2010

For Home And Country Confederate Nationalism In Western North Carolina, Hunter D. Shaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines Confederate nationalism in Western North Carolina during the Civil War. Using secondary sources, newspapers, civilian, and soldiers‟ letters, this study will show that most Appalachians demonstrated a strong loyalty to their new Confederate nation. However, while a majority Appalachian Confederates maintained a strong Confederate nationalism throughout the war; many Western North Carolinians were not loyal to the Confederacy. Critically analyzing Confederate nationalism in Western North Carolina will show that conceptions of loyalty and disloyalty are not absolute, in other words, Appalachia was not purely loyal or disloyal.

Death And Disengagement: A Critical Analysis Of The International Community's Intervention Effort In Darfur, Victor Hodges

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to analyze the international community's conflict management capabilities through its response to the Darfur crisis. Primarily, it aims to show through the lens of the Darfur crisis, which is widely accepted as the first genocide of the twenty-first century, that the international community has yet to develop a framework to collectively intervene in and resolve crimes against humanity. Additionally, this thesis will show the international community's recognition of their shortcomings through the gradual transformation of policies undertaken by several of its leading entities in response to the crisis. The research will pinpoint several major factors behind the …

Leading The James: The Morphological Changes Of The Missouri River And The Subservient James River, April Deann Moreno

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

The James River flows into the Missouri River east of Yankton, SD. The degree to which the morphological changes of the Missouri River had an impact on the course of the James River is debatable. After mapping the Mission Hill and Menominee quadrangles, surficial maps have been made showing the preserved allounits of the area. Hand augers were used to ground-truth surface features located through the use of aerial photographs, topographic maps, and to confirm features on the surficial maps made. OSL samples were taken from both quadrangles and also from Meckling and Saint Helena; the latter two were mapped …

"Thou Hast Given Me A Body": Theological Anthropology And The Virtual Chruch, Travis Pickell

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Introduction

There is no denying the absolutely revolutionary effect of digital and Internet technology on society in the twenty-first century. For many people, the Internet provides an instant connection to friends, family, colleagues, workstations, entertainment media, and other valuable (or completely trivial) information. As a result, the world is becoming more networked, opportunities for entrepreneurial growth are more widespread, and the speed and efficiency of everyday life is increasing rapidly.2 Add blistering growth in digital Smartphone technology, which effectively turns every mobile phone into a web-connected personal computer, and one can easily see that “connectivity” is quickly becoming the new …
