Islamic Reformism On The Periphery Of The Muslim World: Rezaeddin Fakhreddin (1895-1936), Sofia Mazgarova

CGU Theses & Dissertations

During the apex of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries, the geopolitical paradigm was gradually transitioning from imperialism toward the nation-state order. Where the former framework witnessed a handful of European empires vie for global hegemony and influence, the latter facilitated indigenous sovereignty and self-determination. Religion, naturally, played a central role in opposition to colonialism and the galvanization of indigenous nationalism. Consequently, the shape of religion was also influenced, and ultimately redefined to fit the new world order.

Examining The Relationship Between Trust And Culture In The Consultant-Client Relationship, Stephanos Avakian, Timothy Clark, Joanne Roberts Jan 2010

Examining The Relationship Between Trust And Culture In The Consultant-Client Relationship, Stephanos Avakian, Timothy Clark, Joanne Roberts

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This chapter examines the dimensions of inter-organizational and interpersonal trust as they are manifested in the consultant–client interaction, viewed within the ‘cultural spheres’ framework (Schneider and Barsoux, 2003). The chapter argues that the alignment or misalignment of culture(s) helps foster or hinder the presence of trust in the consultant–client relationship. We support our argument by demonstrating how culture becomes an important informative resource from which consultants and clients manage their expectations and risk taking. In inter-organizational contexts, trust is developed through artifacts and formal procedures that are shared by both parties. In interpersonal contexts, trust is developed through the mutual …

Who Is Taking Your Business Across Borders? Harnessing Human Capital For Successful Regionalization In Asia, Richard Raymond Smith, C. Switzer, E. Craig Jan 2010

Who Is Taking Your Business Across Borders? Harnessing Human Capital For Successful Regionalization In Asia, Richard Raymond Smith, C. Switzer, E. Craig

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As the dynamics of globalisation change, Asia has become the focal point for business growth. With the region’s immense diversity across cultures, language, politics, economic development, climate, geography, populations and resources, human capital management is perhaps the most critical and most vexing success factor for companies seeking to invest/operate/grow/expand here. To develop this report, we explored the question of successful regionalisation in Asia from a human capital perspective. We asked, What human capital challenges do business and HR leaders face in their quest to succeed in Asia? What initiatives have they launched to overcome these challenges? And what business outcomes …

Extraction, Territory, And Inequalities: Gas In The Bolivian Chaco, Denise Bebbington, Anthony J. Bebbington Jan 2010

Extraction, Territory, And Inequalities: Gas In The Bolivian Chaco, Denise Bebbington, Anthony J. Bebbington

Sustainability and Social Justice

Conflicts over extractive industry have emerged as one of the most visible and potentially explosive terrains for struggles over distribution, territory, and inequality in the Andes. We explore these relationships in Bolivia, focusing on gas extraction in the Chaco region of the southeastern department of Tarija. We consider how the expansion of extractive industry intersects with territorializing projects of state, sub-national elites, and indigenous actors as well as with questions of inequality and inequity. We conclude that arguments over the territorial constitution of Bolivia are inevitably also arguments over gas and the contested concepts of equity underlying its governance. © …

Performing The Other: Indigenous Identity And Regional Resistance In Sonoran Literature Of The 1980'S, Andrew M. Gordus Jan 2010

Performing The Other: Indigenous Identity And Regional Resistance In Sonoran Literature Of The 1980'S, Andrew M. Gordus

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

During the decade of the 1980’s there occurs a preoccupation, presence and notable change in the representation of the indígena in the cultural production of the State of Sonora. This articulation of a modified ethnic discourse is a product of the economic and social changes that impacted the region during this period. Through a detailed examination of three Sonoran writers we observe how this ethnic discourse leads to a reformulation the traditional images of the indígena and reflects the negotiation between local and national interests to determine the meaning of the region, its identity and its place within the nation.

Places For Races: The White Supremacist Movement Imagines U.S. Geography, Barbara Perry, Randy Blazak Jan 2010

Places For Races: The White Supremacist Movement Imagines U.S. Geography, Barbara Perry, Randy Blazak

Journal of Hate Studies

Increasingly, scholars are acknowledging that racial and other forms of animus assume a spatial dimension. Not only does intercultural hostility take different forms depending on location, but so, too, does the concomitant bias-motivated violence imply “places for races.” The very intent and motive of hate crimes are grounded in the perceived need of perpetrators to defend carefully crafted boundaries. While these boundaries are largely cultural, they may also take on a real, physical form, at least from the perpetrator’s perspective. Nowhere is this more evident than in the geographical imagination of the White Supremacist movement. This paper will trace the …

Building Resilience To Coastal Disasters: An Assessment Of Social Resilience During Recovery After The Indian Ocean Tsunami In Thailand, Dawn M. Kotowicz

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate changes in social resilience to coastal disasters in the coastal community of Suk Sumran in Thailand during recovery from the Indian Ocean tsunami. Specifically, the objective of this research is to determine if there was an increase in indicators of social resilience during the two years of recovery following the disaster. The assessment included an examination of the design of a sub-set of projects implemented during the recovery effort, description of the socio-economic changes related to social resilience over the course of recovery and an exploration of the perceptions related to social …

Rhetorics Of Place And Ecological Relationships: The Rhetorical Construction Of Narragansett Bay, Matthew Ortoleva Jan 2010

Rhetorics Of Place And Ecological Relationships: The Rhetorical Construction Of Narragansett Bay, Matthew Ortoleva

Open Access Dissertations

As an ethnographic study of how language and rhetorical acts are used to construct, challenge, and change ecological relationships to the Narragansett Bay watershed, this dissertation argues that there are three architectonic, master discourses that dominate the discursive domain of the Narragansett Bay watershed: the discourse of science, the discourse of economics, and the discourse of spirituality. These master discourses construct and authorize particular world-views, give human agents the vocabulary to speak about the world in particular ways, and produce multiple other sub-discourses, which in turn construct different ecological relationships to Narragansett Bay and lead to particular attitudes, beliefs, and …

The Role Of Family Functioning In Ethnic Identity And Well-Being In Jewish Late Adolescent Women, Aliza Krieger Jan 2010

The Role Of Family Functioning In Ethnic Identity And Well-Being In Jewish Late Adolescent Women, Aliza Krieger

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore how late adolescent Jewish women identify, explore and commit to their Jewish ethnicity. Moreover, the importance of family to Jewish culture was assessed using measures of family togetherness and flexibility on ethnic identity and psychological well-being in Jewish females. A Multivariate analysis of variance was run to compare how Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Jewish females differ on psychological well-being, general ethnic identity, and Jewish cultural and Jewish religious identity. No differences were found except on Jewish cultural and Jewish religious identity. Orthodox women had the strongest cultural and religious identities and Reform …

Around, Alongside, Inside, And In-Between: The Geometries Of Performance In Contemporary U.S. Play And Film, Piotr A. Skuza Jan 2010

Around, Alongside, Inside, And In-Between: The Geometries Of Performance In Contemporary U.S. Play And Film, Piotr A. Skuza

Open Access Dissertations

Divided into four consecutive chapters, The Geometries of Performance is a study of how Don DeLillo's play Valparaiso and Barry Levinson's film production Wag the Dog both demonstrate and inform readers, spectators, and viewers, through the performative nature of both sources, about the intersections of Patricia Pisters's notion of "camera consciousness" and Roy Ascott's "network consciousness": how such intersections are formed, how they emerge and operate in the contexts of modern technologies of perception, and how they affect contemporary audience. In chapter 1, "Valparaiso: Möbius Strip I or, In the Regime of Monads (Tell us everything')," I study Don DeLillo's …

An Expectancy Theory Analysis Of Catch Shares: Identifying Outcomes, Preferences, And Potential Co-Management Changes In New England Groundfish Management, William D. Whitmore Jan 2010

An Expectancy Theory Analysis Of Catch Shares: Identifying Outcomes, Preferences, And Potential Co-Management Changes In New England Groundfish Management, William D. Whitmore

Open Access Dissertations

Catch shares have been implemented through a variety of limited access privilege programs, including individual transferable quotas (ITQs) and co-operatives. The New England Fishery Management Council recently approved 19 fishing cooperatives, referred to as sectors, in Amendment 16 to the Northeast Multispecies Fishery Management Plan. Despite requests by fishing industry members to consider an ITQ program in Amendment 16, a referendum requirement in the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and time constraints for implementing Amendment 16 were cited as reasons ITQs were not considered for Amendment 16. A mail survey was used to compare different outcomes fishermen and …

Taking Stock Of The Warehouse Cooperative School: A Personal Inventory Of The Formation Of Adolescent Subjectivity In The Context Of 1970s Alternative Education, Theo Greenblatt Jan 2010

Taking Stock Of The Warehouse Cooperative School: A Personal Inventory Of The Formation Of Adolescent Subjectivity In The Context Of 1970s Alternative Education, Theo Greenblatt

Open Access Dissertations

Constructed according the conventions of a subgenre the author defines as "formation text," this creative non-fiction work is an experiment in form that addresses the experimental coming of age of a subject within an experimental era and within the more specific context of an experimental education. Playing off the name of a school the author attended in the 1970s, The Warehouse Cooperative School, its structure employs a series of lists, both organizationally--as a textual version of inventorying, and as metaphor for storage and retrieval of memory. As an overt challenge to the bildungsroman, and its unacknowledged influence on contemporary memoir, …

Differences In Hydraulic Conductance (Kh) As A Function Of Leaf Area (Ks Leaf) And Xylem Size (Ks Xylem) In Encelia Californica And Venegasia Carpesioides, Tony Audin, Andrew Dudley, Janel Gonzalez Jan 2010

Differences In Hydraulic Conductance (Kh) As A Function Of Leaf Area (Ks Leaf) And Xylem Size (Ks Xylem) In Encelia Californica And Venegasia Carpesioides, Tony Audin, Andrew Dudley, Janel Gonzalez

Featured Research

Southern California and the Santa Monica Mountains experience a climate similar to that of the Mediterranean basin. This means hot, dry summers, mild, wet winters, and large amounts of plant diversity. A major issue that can affect these regions is water availability and processing. To demonstrate this, hydraulic conductance (Kh) was measured as a function of leaf area (KS Leaf) and xylem size (KS Xylem). Two vascular plants were used for this study, Encelia californica and Venegasia carpesioides. This is because they are similar morphologically but are different genus and species. It was hypothesized that the larger plant (V. carpesioides) …

Faulkner's Sexualized City: Modernism, Commerce, And The (Textual) Body, Peter Lurie Jan 2010

Faulkner's Sexualized City: Modernism, Commerce, And The (Textual) Body, Peter Lurie

English Faculty Publications

Such classicism is the aesthetic opposite of what Faulkner demonstrates at moments in Mosquitoes and that would go on to become his famously baroque style. In the discussion that follows, I will be asking a number of questions about that development, among them the following: What is the role in Faulkner of a baroque, highly refined language, especially when Faulkner uses it to convey sexuality? And what connections (or disconnections) might that style have to Faulkner’s use of the setting of the city, as in Mosquitoes, or elsewhere of the rural countryside? As we will see, changes in these …

Sprawl, Family Rhythms, And The Four-Day Work Week Symposium: Redefining Work: Implications Of The Four-Day Work Week - Redefining Work: Possibilities And Perils, Katherine B. Silbaugh Jan 2010

Sprawl, Family Rhythms, And The Four-Day Work Week Symposium: Redefining Work: Implications Of The Four-Day Work Week - Redefining Work: Possibilities And Perils, Katherine B. Silbaugh

Connecticut Law Review

We evaluate the four-day work week against the background of other institutional and social practices and constraints. But we fix these other variables when considering the value of this work reform. For example, workers enjoy the commute time and expense savings associated with a four-day week. These savings would mean little if the commutes in question were negligible. Therefore, the value of the four-day work week depends in part on the social history that gave us increasingly substantial commutes. This Article seeks to highlight some of the institutional practices that influence the adoption of a four-day work week, particularly those …

Johnny-Come-Lately: Practical Considerations Of A National Rps Commentary: The Future Of Energy Policy: A National Renewable Portfolio Standard, Lynn M. Fountain Jan 2010

Johnny-Come-Lately: Practical Considerations Of A National Rps Commentary: The Future Of Energy Policy: A National Renewable Portfolio Standard, Lynn M. Fountain

Connecticut Law Review

The debate as to whether the United States should adopt a national renewable portfolio standard (“RPS”) has persisted for years. During this time, the states, largely through their adoption of state-level RPSs, have laid the foundation needed for the creation of a viable renewable energy market. Proponents of a national RPS argue that its enactment is a necessary step toward solving the energy-related challenges faced by the United States. This Commentary Article concludes that a national RPS— arriving at this late stage—may do more to slow the momentum toward the development of a renewable energy industry. The Article describes the …

Bona Fide Protection: Fulfilling Cercla's Legislative Purpose By Applying Differing Definitions Of Disposal Note, Emilee Mooney Scott Jan 2010

Bona Fide Protection: Fulfilling Cercla's Legislative Purpose By Applying Differing Definitions Of Disposal Note, Emilee Mooney Scott

Connecticut Law Review

In the late 1970s, the Love Canal disaster brought toxic contamination into the American consciousness as never before. In response, Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response and Liability Act of 1980 (“CERCLA”), with the aim of cleaning up contaminated sites and making the polluters pay. Unfortunately, the draconian liability scheme imposed by CERCLA has made investors wary of redeveloping possibly contaminated industrial property. To combat this problem, Congress passed the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act. The Brownfields Act amends CERCLA to provide liability protection for landowners who would otherwise be liable, but who did not own the …

The Four-Day Work Week: But What About Ms. Coke, Ms. Upton, And Ms. Blankenship Symposium: Redefining Work: Implications Of The Four-Day Work Week - Reduced/Compressed Work Weeks: Who Wins: Who Loses, Shirley Lung Jan 2010

The Four-Day Work Week: But What About Ms. Coke, Ms. Upton, And Ms. Blankenship Symposium: Redefining Work: Implications Of The Four-Day Work Week - Reduced/Compressed Work Weeks: Who Wins: Who Loses, Shirley Lung

Connecticut Law Review

The work/family conflicts of poor and low-income women remain invisible in mainstream discussions about reform of working hours. “Family-friendly” reforms such as compressed work weeks, part-time jobs, reduced hours, and other alternative work schedules largely address the interests of professional women who are in a position to trade income for time. This Article suggests ways of expanding work/family discussions to address the needs of poor and low-income women who are immigrants, single parents, and involuntary part-time workers who labor in low-wage industries such as home care, clerical services, and office cleaning. The Article begins by examining gaps in the current …

Acceptable Deviance And Property Rights, Mark A. Edwards Jan 2010

Acceptable Deviance And Property Rights, Mark A. Edwards

Connecticut Law Review

Compliance with—or deviance from—law is often dependent upon the law’s convergence with—or divergence from—normative sensibilities. Where the legality and social acceptability of behavior diverge, some deviance is socially acceptable. Property rights evolve in response to changes in normative sensibilities. Constructing a model of acceptable deviance and applying it to property rights, we can predict and actually observe the evolution of property rights in response to changes in normative sensibilities in areas as diverse as file-sharing, foreclosures, the use of public space, and fishing rights. We can also predict and observe stresses in legal institutions created by divergences in the legality …

The Limits Of A National Renewable Portfolio Standard Commentary: The Future Of Energy Policy: A National Renewable Portfolio Standard, Jim Rossi Jan 2010

The Limits Of A National Renewable Portfolio Standard Commentary: The Future Of Energy Policy: A National Renewable Portfolio Standard, Jim Rossi

Connecticut Law Review

In this Commentary Article, Professor Rossi highlights some of the distributional and operational problems presented by a national renewable portfolio standard (“RPS”) in electric power. He also offers several solutions to these problems as a way of advancing a cautionary defense of a national RPS. Ultimately, Professor Rossi concludes that addressing climate change will need to involve more systemic and larger scale modifications to regulation of the electric power industry.

The Future Of Oil And Gas Law, John S. Lowe Jan 2010

The Future Of Oil And Gas Law, John S. Lowe

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Author’s thesis is simple: Oil and gas jurisprudence has a bright future. We live in a hydrocarbons world, and our economic system is not going to change dramatically overnight; we will continue to live in a world powered and heated by hydrocarbons for at least the next twenty years. In fact, world demand for oil and gas is likely to increase substantially. From the turn of the twenty-first century until mid-2008, the world watched as oil prices first inched upwards and then surged. The high energy costs that energized us until a year and a half ago (and that appear …
