Understanding Ridership Drivers For Bus Rapid Transit Systems In Australia, Graham Currie, Alexa Delbosc Jan 2010

Understanding Ridership Drivers For Bus Rapid Transit Systems In Australia, Graham Currie, Alexa Delbosc

World Transit Research

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems are an increasingly popular public transport option in Australia and internationally. They provide rail-like quality for bus services for a fraction of the cost of fixed rail. Many claims of high and increasing ridership have resulted from BRT system development; however it is unclear exactly which aspects of BRT system design drive this.
This paper undertakes an empirical analysis of factors influencing ridership on 77 BRT and non-BRT bus routes in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane. Explanatory variables considered included service level, frequency, speed, stop spacing, separate right of way share, vehicle accessibility, employment and …

Fire Disturbance, Forest Structure, And Stand Dynamics In Montane Forests Of The Southern Cascades, Thousand Lakes Wilderness, California, Usa, Matthew F. Bekker, Alan H. Taylor

Wasatch Dendroclimatology Research

We examined tree diameter, age structure, and successional trends in 100 montane forest plots to identify the effects of variation in the return interval, severity, and extent of fires on forest structure and dynamics in the southern Cascade Range, California. We classified 100 forest plots into 8 groups based on stand structural characteristics. Median point fire return intervals were shortest in lower montane mixed conifer and Jeffrey pine–white fir stands (13-25 y) and upper montane red fir–white fir stands (14.5-19.5 y), intermediate in lodgepole pine stands (50-76.5 y), and longest in high-elevation red fir–mountain hemlock stands (100 y). Fire severity …

No. 04: Urban Food Production And Household Food Security In Southern African Cities, Jonathan Crush, Alice Hovorka, Daniel Tevara Jan 2010

No. 04: Urban Food Production And Household Food Security In Southern African Cities, Jonathan Crush, Alice Hovorka, Daniel Tevara

African Food Security Urban Network

Optimism about the role of household food production (urban agriculture) in improving the food security of the urban poor has given way to pessimism and even scepticism. This paper critically examines the views of advocates of urban agriculture and suggests that it cannot be isolated from a broader consideration of the changing nature of urban food supply systems in Southern African cities. Urban food production by poor households is currently very limited across the region and even fewer produce for market. While food production is a useful livelihood supplement in some cities and a source of income to some wealthier …

Alfred Russel Wallace, Geographer, Charles H. Smith Jan 2010

Alfred Russel Wallace, Geographer, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

Among the great explorers and thinkers who advanced geography in the nineteenth century and helped it evolve into the subject that exists today is a man who is not always connected with the field, Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913). Most commonly recognized as ‘the other man’ in the history of the discovery of the principle of natural selection, Wallace’s commitment to the study of landscape and its physical, biological, and human elements was lifelong, and resulted in a wide range of contributions to biogeography, physical geography, human geography, and ethnography. In this year of the double anniversaries of Charles Darwin’s birth …

An Examination Of Physical Activity On Academic Achievement In Elementary School Children, Cynthia Gail Libby

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this project is to substantiate the need of a curriculum for primary grade students that connect physical activity and state standards assignments and to evaluate a curriculum designed for third grade students that will focus on intertwining physical movement and daily assignments. There is a strong emphasis on academics in elementary schools, while physical education is regulated to a "time out" from academics. More schools are eliminating physical activity from the curriculum to increase scores on tests. The first part of this project looks at what current research says about physical education and how it is connected …

It included programmatic membership as the fourteenth variable. The study employed both logistic regression analysis and multiple regression analysis. The dependent variable for the logistic regression analysis was dichotomous based on completion of all online courses with a grade of D” or better (yes or no). The dependent variable for the …

Watershed Modeling Using Gis Technology: A Critical Review Jan 2010

Watershed Modeling Using Gis Technology: A Critical Review

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Understanding and managing water resource problems involves complex processes and interactions within the watershed surface and subsurface. The imposition of total maximum daily load (TMDL) regulations on the pollutant influx to a watershed has created a strong demand for new assessment tools. The spatial scales relevant to transport of the pollutants may span many orders of magnitude, ranging from field plots to regional hydrological systems. As the demand for and development of watershed modeling capabilities have evolved, geographic information systems (GIS) in tandem with remote sensing technologies have played an essential role supporting both data collection and analysis. This paper …
