The Value Of Destination Loyalty: Myth Or Reality?, Robertico R. Croes, Amir Shani, Andrew Walls Jan 2010

The Value Of Destination Loyalty: Myth Or Reality?, Robertico R. Croes, Amir Shani, Andrew Walls

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Given the growing appeal of the concept of destination loyalty in tourism marketing, it is highly important to investigate the travel expenditures of loyal vs. non- or less loyal visitors. Adopting the behavioral approach to loyalty, this study examines the spending patterns of visitors to Kissimmee-St. Cloud, while comparing between the different loyalty segments: no previous visit, one previous visit, and multiple visits. The analysis is based on an intercept survey conducted by the Kissimmee-St. Cloud Convention and Visitors Bureau∗ (KSCVB, 2006), which yielded a sample of 4,301 visitors. In contrast to the prevalent concept, the results show that first …

Reallocating Water: An Application Of Sequential Sharing Rules To Cyprus, Erik Ansink, Carmen Marchiori Jan 2010

Reallocating Water: An Application Of Sequential Sharing Rules To Cyprus, Erik Ansink, Carmen Marchiori

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We present an axiomatic approach to the reallocation of water rights among economic sectors. Reallocation may be appropriate when the current schedule of water allocation is considered unfair. Our proposed approach is based on the combination of initial water rights, sectors' claims to water, and an exogenous ordering of these sectors. We apply sharing rules, based on bankruptcy rules, to reallocate water, which complements other approaches to the reallocation of water rights, including those based on water markets. Our approach is illustrated using an application to water reallocation in Cyprus, where reallocation of water rights has been recognised as an …

At Home And Abroad: An Empirical Analysis Of Innovation And Diffusion In Energy-Efficient Technologies, Elena Verdolini, Marzio Galeotti Jan 2010

At Home And Abroad: An Empirical Analysis Of Innovation And Diffusion In Energy-Efficient Technologies, Elena Verdolini, Marzio Galeotti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper contributes to the induced innovation literature by extending the analysis of supply and demand determinants of innovation in energy-efficient technologies to account for international knowledge flows and spillovers. In the first part of the paper we select a sample of 38 innovating countries and we study how knowledge related to energy-efficient technologies flows across geographical and technological space. We demonstrate that higher geographical and technological distances are associated with a lower probability of knowledge flow. In the second part of the paper, we use our previous estimates to construct stocks of internal and external knowledge for a panel …

Beyond The Home Market Effect: Market Size And Specialization In A Multi-Country World, Gianmarco Ottaviano, Kristian Behrens, Andrea R. Lamorgese, Takatoshi Tabuchi Jan 2010

Beyond The Home Market Effect: Market Size And Specialization In A Multi-Country World, Gianmarco Ottaviano, Kristian Behrens, Andrea R. Lamorgese, Takatoshi Tabuchi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The standard two-country model of international trade with monopolistic competition predicts a more-than-proportional relationship between a country’s share of world production of a good and its share of world demand for that same good, a result known as the “home market effect”. We first show that this prediction does not generally carry through to the multi-country case, as production patterns are crucially affected by third country effects. We then derive an alternative prediction that holds whatever the number of countries considered. This new prediction takes into account important features of the real world such as comparative advantage due to cross-country …

Exploring Science Teachers' Attitudes And Knowledge About Environmental Education In Three International Teaching Communities., Todd Campbell, W. Medina-Jerez, I. Erdogan, D. Zhang

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This study examined the similarities and differences among 171 Grade 7-12 science teachers from three different countries (54 U.S, 63 Bolivian, and 54 Turkish) with respect to their attitudes toward environmental education (EE) and instructional practices. The instrument employed explored how teachers‘ knowledge, instructional practices, decisionmaking process, and cultural features influenced their EE attitudes and praxis. The instrument, which was translated into Spanish and Turkish and then back into English, contained a personal data form that included demographic questions and a three-part questionnaire. Based on the analysis completed, significant differences were found between these three countries with respect to 1) …

Productivity And Firm Selection: Quantifying The “New” Gains From Trade, Gianmarco Ottaviano, Gregory Corcos, Massimo Del Gatto, Giordano Mion Jan 2010

Productivity And Firm Selection: Quantifying The “New” Gains From Trade, Gianmarco Ottaviano, Gregory Corcos, Massimo Del Gatto, Giordano Mion

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We discuss how standard computable equilibrium models of trade policy can be enriched with selection effects without missing other important channels of adjustment. This is achieved by estimating and simulating a partial equilibrium model that accounts for a number of real world effects of trade liberalisation: richer availability of product varieties; tougher competition and weaker market power of firms; better exploitation of economies of scale; and, of course, efficiency gains via the selection of the most efficient firms. The model is estimated on E.U. data and simulated in counterfactual scenarios that capture several dimensions of European integration. Simulations suggest that …

Spatiotemporal Structure Of Molecular Evolution Of H5n1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Viruses In Vietnam., Margaret A. Carrel, Michael Emch, R. Todd Jobe, Aaron Moody, Xiu-Feng Wan

CVM Publications

BACKGROUND: Vietnam is one of the countries most affected by outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses. First identified in Vietnam in poultry in 2001 and in humans in 2004, the virus has since caused 111 cases and 56 deaths in humans. In 2003/2004 H5N1 outbreaks, nearly the entire poultry population of Vietnam was culled. Our earlier study (Wan et al., 2008, PLoS ONE, 3(10): e3462) demonstrated that there have been at least six independent H5N1 introductions into Vietnam and there were nine newly emerged reassortants from 2001 to 2007 in Vietnam. H5N1 viruses in Vietnam cluster distinctly around …

Micro-Level Estimation And Decomposition Of Poverty And Inequality In Nepal, Mani Nepal, Alok Bohara Jan 2010

Micro-Level Estimation And Decomposition Of Poverty And Inequality In Nepal, Mani Nepal, Alok Bohara

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Poverty alleviation has become one of the main development agendas of the twenty first century worldwide. But, the identification targeting of poor has been facing fundamental problems due to the lack of required information. Using the micro-level estimation technique we estimate household expenditure for the census households using 1995/96 and 2003/04 household surveys, and estimate different measures of poverty and inequality using the estimated expenditure for those two years at the country level as well as at the regional, districts and village levels, and for the different caste/ethnic households. The public good aspects of this research is that these measures …

The Multidimensional Role Of Trust In Enabling Creativity Within Virtual Communities Of Practice: A Theoretical Model Integrating Swift, Knowledgebased, Institution-Based, And Organizational Trust, David Askay, April J. Spivack Jan 2010

The Multidimensional Role Of Trust In Enabling Creativity Within Virtual Communities Of Practice: A Theoretical Model Integrating Swift, Knowledgebased, Institution-Based, And Organizational Trust, David Askay, April J. Spivack

Communication Studies

Virtual communities of practice are gaining attention among scholars and practitioners as managers and high-level executives look for ways to adapt to an ever-increasing rate of environmental change. These communities have been recognized as a tool for generating new ideas by accessing geographically distributed expertise. As most expert knowledge is tacit and tacit knowledge exchange is what leads to creativity, an understanding of antecedents to tacit knowledge exchange is needed. This manuscript responds by examining the role of trust, a well-known antecedent of creativity, within the context of virtual communities of practice. An interdisciplinary approach led to the development of …

Vegetation albedo is a critical component of the Earth's climate system, yet efforts to evaluate and improve albedo parameterizations in climate models have lagged relative to other aspects of model development. Here, we calculated growing season albedos for deciduous and evergreen forests, crops, and grasslands based on over 40 site‐years of data from the AmeriFlux network and compared them with estimates presently used in the land surface formulations of a variety of climate models. Generally, the albedo estimates used in land surface models agreed well with this data compilation. However, a variety of models using fixed seasonal estimates of albedo …

Getting Out Of A Rut: Decolonizing Western Women’S History, Margaret D. Jacobs Jan 2010

Getting Out Of A Rut: Decolonizing Western Women’S History, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

For over three decades, western women’s historians have been working not just to challenge male biases within western history scholarship but also to create a more multicultural inclusive narrative. Paradoxically, however, the overarching narrative of western women’s history continues to sideline women of color and to advance a triumphalist interpretation of white women in the West. This essay argues that a multicultural approach has not provided an adequate framework for understanding women and gender in the American West. Instead, western women historians must “decolonize” our narrative and our field through seriously considering the West as a colonial site. To do …

The Contextual Impact Of Income Inequality On Social Capital And Adverse Social Outcomes, Jeannie Schiff Jan 2010

The Contextual Impact Of Income Inequality On Social Capital And Adverse Social Outcomes, Jeannie Schiff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An interdisciplinary approach to policy and governance recognizes that many social welfare problems are interrelated, and policy-makers have long recognized a need to address the root causes of these problems. There is much evidence that income inequality is one of these root causes but research suggesting the effect of income inequality is mediated by social capital has complicated the relationship, as have theories of causality that take different approaches. This study takes an ecological approach to these issues to test the relationship between income inequality, social capital and selected adverse outcomes proposed by the relative income hypothesis. The relative income …

Meeting The Needs Of Global Companies Through Improved International Business Curriculum, Kathy L. Milhauser, Tim Rahschulte

Faculty Publications - College of Business

The global workplace requires specific knowledge, skills, and abilities on the part of workers. There is a growing body of research indicating a gap between the global industry demand for skills and the higher education system’s ability to supply that demand. Leveraging the work from Yu, Guan, Yang, and Chiao (2005) and Prestwich and Ho-Kim (2007), this study investigated this gap. The sample included global leaders of Fortune 500 companies. Exploratory in nature, the primary purpose of this study was to understand the needs of global business organizations that form the hiring market for international business graduates. The findings highlight …

The Theological Significance Of ר ע ב And ש ב ע In The Hebrew Bible, Kathleen Lamberg Jan 2010

The Theological Significance Of ר ע ב And ש ב ע In The Hebrew Bible, Kathleen Lamberg

Seminary Masters Theses

This study examines the literary pairing of the words full (עבש) and hungry (בער) in the Hebrew Bible from the perspective of inner-textuality. This thesis explores the theological development of the terms, beginning with their appearance as words of simple meanings pertaining to physical condition, in Genesis 42 and Exodus 16. Deuteronomy 8 emerges as a theological catalyst for the terms when it redresses hungry to mean humility before YHWH, and full as arrogance toward YHWH. Full and hungry are made into two endpoints on a paradigm in Deuteronomy 8, highlighting the attitudinal approaches that Israel is and is not …
