Urban Form In Europe And America, Pietro S. Nivola Jan 2010

Urban Form In Europe And America, Pietro S. Nivola

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

Why do America's cities sprawl whereas European cities remain comparatively compact, and what difference do the patterns of urban development make? Pietro Nivola, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, addresses these questions. Nivola examines two kinds of determinants of urban form: (1) market forces, including those influenced by geography, demographics, and technological change, and (2) public policies shaping national transportation systems, tax policy, educational institutions, and more. He also discusses the implications of the different cityscapes for energy consumption.

Notes On Poverty Traps And Appalachia, Steven Durlauf

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

In these notes, I provide some general ideas on how to conceptualize poverty traps and speculate on their applicability to understanding Appalachian poverty. My goal is to stimulate thinking on Appalachia that exploits contemporary perspectives in economics on the sources of persistent poverty and inequality. To do this, I focus on both the theory of poverty traps as well as issues in the econometric assessment of their empirical salience.

Let’s be there for the long term.” When the news cycle changes and Haiti is no longer the main story, it is not an option to shrug our shoulders and turn away, even though, as Dr. Paul Farmer, the founder of Partners in Health in Haiti, has said, it is the curse of humanity “that it learns to tolerate even …

Both the authors have broad experience studying health-care issues in Alaska, and they have recently been looking at the problems Alaska’s Medicare patients face in getting primary-care doctors to see them. They prepared this note to respond quickly to questions from and discussions with the Office of the Governor in Washington, D.C. and Alaska’s Congressional delegation. Those questions and discussions were about the possible implications for Alaska’s Medicare patients of provisions in health-care reform legislation the U.S. Congress …

Marquette Law Review

For anyone seeking the peaceful resolution of international conflicts and disputes, and hoping journalism might contribute to that goal, an unasked question hangs uncomfortably over this analysis: Is journalism as deeply committed to the resolution of human conflict as it is to its meticulous documentation? For violent conflicts such as war, genocide, and terrorism, the stakes are particularly high. Is journalism’s possessive investment in disorder so great that it lacks the will or ability to change its habits, presuming that such change would be desirable for all of us?

Journalists’ own way of talking about their work can blur the …
