Rural Areas Risk Being Overlooked In 2010 Census, William P. O'Hare
Rural Areas Risk Being Overlooked In 2010 Census, William P. O'Hare
Carsey Publications
This issue brief describes how the census is conducted in rural areas, identifies some of the most difficult rural areas to count, and highlights what organizations are doing to ensure a more accurate census count in rural America. It also points out that undercounting by the census can lead to communities not receiving a fair share of federal funding.

Religion And Global Peace: The Instrumental Value Of Religion, Mohammad Manzoor Malik, Saim Kayadibi
Religion And Global Peace: The Instrumental Value Of Religion, Mohammad Manzoor Malik, Saim Kayadibi
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Religious believers claim their religions are peaceful and genuine believers are peacekeepers and peacemakers. In substantiating justification to their claim, they very often refer to religious scriptures. Yet, on the contrary, their claim is confronted by an opposite claim: many wars were fought and are being fought in the name of religion; and a great deal of violence can be ascribed to the religious believers. In addition, religious scriptures and history of religions do attest, to a certain extent, permissibility of using physical offence or defence. As a result, a question arises: Is the violence credited to religious believers, due …

Identidad And Mejicanidad: Dance Transference Through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, And Flamenco Dance, Erica Ocegueda
Identidad And Mejicanidad: Dance Transference Through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, And Flamenco Dance, Erica Ocegueda
Theatre & Dance ETDs
Identidad and Mejicanidad examines cultural identity and dance through the lens of 'owners,' 'borrowers,' and 'renters'. I examine how non-professional participants of these dance forms are beacons for cultural expression and serve to explore the fringe of the sense of cultural knowing through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, and Flamenco dance. Through these dance forms I interrogate how cultural identity frames questions of authenticity and identity. Ownership of cultural identity and issues of authenticity are a source of ire for many underrepresented groups of people. Maintaining who is 'in control' of a cultural expressions' evolution is a common dispute. The legacy of …
Too Much Oil, Reyer Gerlagh
Too Much Oil, Reyer Gerlagh
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Fear for oil exhaustion and its consequences on economic growth has been a driver of a rich literature on exhaustible resources from the 1970s onwards. But our view on oil has remarkably changed and we now worry how we should constrain climate change damages associated with oil and other fossil fuel use. In this climate change debate, economists have pointed to a green paradox: when policy makers stimulate the development of non-carbon energy sources to (partly) replace fossil fuels in the future, oil markets may anticipate a future reduction in demand and increase current supply. The availability of ‘green’ technologies …

Tourism And Development: A Recent Phenomenon Built On Old (Institutional) Roots?, Francesco Pigliaru, Rinaldo Brau, Adriana Di Liberto
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Is tourism an opportunity for lagging countries in the elusive quest for growth (Easterly, 2002)? Recent empirical evidence suggests that the answer is a cautious yes. Aggregate cross-country data show that tourism specialization is likely to be associated with higher per capita GDP growth rates than those observed in industrialized countries. However, this evidence ignores the importance of institutional quality and results are likely to be biased by omitted variable problems. In this paper we frame our starting question within the general debate about the importance of good/bad institutions as fundamental determinants of economic growth (Acemoglu et al., 2001) and …

What Drives The International Transfer Of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies? Empirical Evidence From Patent Data, Matthieu Glachant, Antoine Dechezleprêtre, Yann Ménière
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Using patent data from 66 countries for the period 1990–2003, we characterize the factors which promote or hinder the international diffusion of climate-friendly technologies on a global scale. Regression results show that technology-specific capabilities of the recipient countries are determinant factors. In contrast, the general level of education is less important. We also show that restrictions to international trade—e.g., high tariff rates—and lax intellectual property regimes negatively influence the international diffusion of patented knowledge. A counter-intuitive result is that barriers to foreign direct investments can promote transfers. We discuss different possible interpretations.
