Evaluation Of References In Dissertations And Theses Against The Holdings In A University Library, Florence Adeola Omoba, Beatrice Adeyoji Fabunmi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The evaluation of university library collections must include quantitative as well as qualitative measures. This research seeks to demonstrate a relationship between quantitative and qualitative evaluation of Kenneth Dike Library collection in the sciences. It is hypothesised that, as a result of this relationship, the larger the collection, the more likely it is that it can support PhD research in the sciences.

The Motivations And Satisfactions Of Hunting With Non-Typical Outfitters, Heidi Diestel Mar 2010

The Motivations And Satisfactions Of Hunting With Non-Typical Outfitters, Heidi Diestel

Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration

This study examined the definition of adventure tourism, theories of place attachment, and conducted a satisfaction and motivation survey for Non-Typical Outfitters (NTO). The purpose of this study was to determine the motivations, satisfactions, and place attachment factors when hunting with NTO. Zoomerang, an online survey company, was used to conduct the survey and further calculations were conducted through Microsoft Excel. Overall, NTO clients were all male, satisfied, had experienced other outfitters, and would return to hunt with NTO again. Major conclusions included that all place attachment factors (use-oriented and emotional) were considered neutral and top areas of satisfaction were: …

Changing Po2licy: The Elements For Improving Childhood Asthma Outcomes, Anne Rossier Markus, Meagan Lyon, Sara J. Rosenbaum Mar 2010

Changing Po2licy: The Elements For Improving Childhood Asthma Outcomes, Anne Rossier Markus, Meagan Lyon, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

Childhood asthma is a serious and chronic health issue that affects one in seven U.S. children and their families, compromising their health and quality of life and placing a heavy financial burden on families as well as an enormous strain on the health care system. Treating, managing, and ultimately preventing and reducing the burden of asthma represents a critical test of the ability of the U.S. health system – health insurers, clinical care providers, and public health agencies – to work together. Our investigation found that, as a country, we already know enough to act and improve life for the …

Changing Policy: The Elements For Improving Childhood Asthma Outcomes, Anne R. Markus, Meagan Lyon, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

This report lays out the facts and offers specific policy recommendations for success that could change the face of childhood asthma in America. These recommendations aim to make better use of programs and policies already in place, such as Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), as well as private sector insurance coverage and existing public health programs. The recommendations also underscore the importance of careful research -- scientific, practical, and community-based -- in order to continue to learn what works best and strengthen knowledge for future action. In a reformed health system, these initial efforts are not wasted …

Climate Change, Scale, And Devaluation: The Challenge Of Our Built Environment, Nathan F. Sayre Mar 2010

Climate Change, Scale, And Devaluation: The Challenge Of Our Built Environment, Nathan F. Sayre

Washington and Lee Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment

Climate debate and policy proposals in the United States have yet to grasp the gravity and magnitude of the challenges posed by global warming. This paper develops three arguments to redress this situation. First, the spatial and temporal scale of the processes linking greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to climate change is unprecedented in human experience, challenging our abilities to comprehend, let alone act. An adequate understanding of the scale of global warming leads to an unequivocal starting point for all discussions: we must leave as much fossil fuel in the ground as possible, for as long as possible. Second, a …

A Climate Action Plan For Bucknell University, Wendy Chou, Dina El-Mogazi, Dennis Hawley Mar 2010

A Climate Action Plan For Bucknell University, Wendy Chou, Dina El-Mogazi, Dennis Hawley

Technical Reports

The accelerating pace of human-influenced climate change and our growing awareness of its negative public-health, environmental, and economic consequences compel decisive action. In recent years, many institutions of higher education have taken leadership roles to promote sustainability and climate neutrality at the campus level. In January 2008, Bucknell University became a signatory to the American Colleges and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Under this agreement, Bucknell is required to prepare a comprehensive inventory of greenhouse gas emissions by May 2009, to update the inventory every other year thereafter, and to implement tangible emissions-reducing actions in the short-term (two years). The …

Effects Of International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme On Teacher Philosophy, Perceptions Of Efficacy, And Outlook On Education, Leroy Alfred Getchell Mar 2010

Effects Of International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme On Teacher Philosophy, Perceptions Of Efficacy, And Outlook On Education, Leroy Alfred Getchell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Our nation, if it is going to keep a competitive edge versus the rest of the world, must reform the current system of educating children. The purpose of this study is to provide evidence that implementation of one increasingly popular reform effort, the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP), changes teachers’ perceptions of what is important about education, the need for international understanding for all students, and the future of education, in general. This dissertation helped answer those questions through an extensive study of relevant literature and the use of an on-line survey to analyze results. This research produced a …

A Hidden Markov Model For Earthquake Declustering, Zhengxiao Wu Mar 2010

A Hidden Markov Model For Earthquake Declustering, Zhengxiao Wu

Research Collection School of Economics

The hidden Markov model (HMM) and related algorithms provide a powerful framework for statistical inference on partially observed stochastic processes. HMMs have been successfully implemented in many disciplines, though not as widely applied as they should be in earthquake modeling. In this article, a simple HMM earthquake occurrence model is proposed. Its performance in declustering is compared with the epidemic-type aftershock sequence model, using a data set of the central and western regions of Japan. The earthquake clusters and the single earthquakes separated using our model show some interesting geophysical differences. In particular, the log-linear Gutenberg-Richter frequency-magnitude law (G-R law) …

Valuing Historic Places: Traditional And Contemporary Approaches, Jeremy C. Wells Mar 2010

Valuing Historic Places: Traditional And Contemporary Approaches, Jeremy C. Wells

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Decisions about which older buildings, structures, and places should be conserved are fundamental to the practice of architectural conservation. Conservation professionals use the interrelated concepts of integrity, authenticity, and historical value to determine which historic places are worthy of importance. Traditionally, these concepts are predicated on preserving the object rather than conserving the meaning and values associated with the object. In other works, the goal is to benefit the object and not the people who value the object. This method, which has roots in antiquated nineteenth-century Western scientific traditions, deprecates the importance of people, processes, and meanings in how places …

Building Innovation : Learning With Technologies, Kathryn Moyle Mar 2010

Building Innovation : Learning With Technologies, Kathryn Moyle

Australian Education Review

AER 56 explores national and international policy priorities for building students' innovation capabilities through information and communication technologies (ICT) in Australian schools. Section 1 sets out the Australian policy context for digital education and highlights some of the emerging challenges. It provides an overview of two Australian school education policy priorities: that of how to meaningfully include technologies into teaching and learning; and how to build innovation capabilities in students. Section 2 critically examines the education and economic policy contexts for digital education in Australia, their intersections with international economic priorities, and the role of commercial technologies markets in schools. …
