Vantage Point: The Representation Of Place And The Visual Experience, Jennifer A. Cohen Apr 2010

Vantage Point: The Representation Of Place And The Visual Experience, Jennifer A. Cohen

Scripps Senior Theses

We, as human beings, are unique creatures that have a need to form places. This obsession with claiming spaces and turning them into places starts at a young age. Maybe it is the first time a child goes to the park and claims a corner of the sand pit, because they think the sand is better on the right side. Perhaps it is a specific seat in the bleachers a person sits in at every home football game. Or maybe it is much more significant, like the spot on the path by the curved tree, next to the bike shed …

Modeling The Transport Of Radium Isotopes Offshore Tampa Bay Through Submarine Groundwater Discharge, Alanna Lecher Apr 2010

Modeling The Transport Of Radium Isotopes Offshore Tampa Bay Through Submarine Groundwater Discharge, Alanna Lecher

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Radium isotopes have been used in years past to observe and understand coastal mixing processes and submarine groundwater discharge. There are four radium isotopes used as natural tracers: Ra-224, Ra-223, Ra-226, and Ra-228, with half lives ranging in length from a few days to over a thousand years, which makes them applicable tracers of process of a variety of lengths of time. In this project, I simulated the flow of these isotopes through submarine groundwater discharge into coastal and offshore waters. I constructed a model of the study area, using a computer program called Visual MODFLOW, which uses finite difference …

The Curse Of Diamonds, Holly Thomas Apr 2010

The Curse Of Diamonds, Holly Thomas

2010 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents

Sierra Leone and Liberia have exported rough diamonds since the discovery of diamonds in the Mano River basin in the 1930s.i It was not until the late 20th century when these minerals were nicknamed conflict diamonds, loot-able resources sold to fund rebel movements and terrorist organizations. Conflict diamonds have been linked to civil war, corruption, and human rights violations. Both countries suffered through bloody civil wars, slow development, and a low standard of living. Sierra Leone's civil war resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of one-third of the country. Liberia's civil war resulted in over 200,000 deaths and …

Intergenerational Transfer Of Human Capital Among Immigrant Families, Kelsey Hample Apr 2010

Intergenerational Transfer Of Human Capital Among Immigrant Families, Kelsey Hample

Honors Projects

While immigrants in the United States tend to earn less than comparable natives, their children close the earnings gap. The purpose of this study is to determine how differences in intergenerational transfer of human capital between immigrant families and native families affect different earning outcomes for respondents of each group. Specifically, this study uses a human capital framework to analyze both the direct effect of parental education on respondent earnings and the indirect effect on earnings by first affecting respondent education, which in turn affects respondent earnings. Data from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth allows background variables within …

Hnr 499 Senior Thesis Report: Final, Jenny Lechy Apr 2010

Hnr 499 Senior Thesis Report: Final, Jenny Lechy

Honors Projects

For most of its history the American education system has focused on Western culture and history. However, current Michigan school students are witnessing a profound change in this traditional focus, because of new graduation requirements implemented recently. My intention with this Senior Thesis Project is to conduct research into how this shift in curriculum is being seen in current American education, with a particular focus on the teaching of the Michigan World History and Geography Content Expectations (WHGCEs). Since October 2008, the Michigan Board of Education has changed the state social science requirements for high school graduation to include detailed …

An Analysis Of John Dewey’S Notion Of Occupations - Still Pedagogically Valuable?, Anthony Defalco Apr 2010

An Analysis Of John Dewey’S Notion Of Occupations - Still Pedagogically Valuable?, Anthony Defalco

Education and Culture

John Dewey lived and worked in an environment where the manual training movement was ever-present. For Dewey his own unique version of manual training is labeled occupations. Nevertheless, over the years what Dewey meant by occupations has been either misinterpreted or ignored for a plethora of reasons. This manual training climate that Dewey was a part of was dominant and Dewey could not and did not ignore it. He did transform it. Later on published sources use Dewey’s notion of occupations and in many cases misinterpret what he meant by occupations as a method. Finally what Dewey actually says about …

Rorty’S Social Theory And The Narrative Of U.S. History Curriculum, Jesse Goodman, Sarah Montgomery Dr., Connie Ables Apr 2010

Rorty’S Social Theory And The Narrative Of U.S. History Curriculum, Jesse Goodman, Sarah Montgomery Dr., Connie Ables

Education and Culture

This paper explores the implications for creating a U.S. history narrative from a Rortyan perspective. First, we review Rorty’s social theory. Second, we discuss implications of his ideas regarding the creation of a U.S. history narrative based upon his ideas. Finally, we examine two concerns that would likely emerge if a Rortyan U.S. history curriculum was taught in our public schools.

Historical Geocollaboration: The Implementation Of A Scoring System To Account For Uncertainty In Geographic Data Created In A Collaborative Environment, Anthony D. Contreras Apr 2010

Historical Geocollaboration: The Implementation Of A Scoring System To Account For Uncertainty In Geographic Data Created In A Collaborative Environment, Anthony D. Contreras

Theses and Dissertations

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an existing tool to create, manage, analyze and visualize data with a spatial component, and is used by many types of organizations in many fields. For most of the tasks and projects within these fields, a GIS provides highly accurate results. Under certain circumstances (Massive Scope, Widespread Expertise and Multivalency), a GIS fails to provide adequate results in the field of historical geography, for example. Crowdsourcing tools like Wikipedia and Open Street Map (OSM) address some of these issues, but not all, and introduce new problems. This project focuses on geographic data dealing with …

Cia And The Cold War Era, Mary E. Byers Apr 2010

Cia And The Cold War Era, Mary E. Byers

Senior Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the creation of the Central Intelligence Agency and its role in the Cold War. Great detail highlights the timeliness of the CIA’s creation and dynamic role over the years that followed its founding. For half a century, attempts to understand the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics dominated the CIA’s agenda. Thus, careful study of this era is important to understanding the progression of intelligence within the United States. The avenue of research for this thesis was a collaboration of published books, online journals, credible websites, and personal interviews. The development of the …

The Northwest Forest Plan: Up To Our Neck In Owls?, Ashley N. Horvat Apr 2010

The Northwest Forest Plan: Up To Our Neck In Owls?, Ashley N. Horvat

Honors Theses

Traversing across the vast Pacific Northwest with the Northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina), one would experience a dynamic landscape that ranged from areas shrouded with ancient forests, mountains dotted with dense young forests, large swathes of empty habitat from clearcuts, and corridors filled with canopies and a plethora of life. The once vibrant forests that blanketed the Pacific Northwest in an abundance of life and sheltered these rare owls in their canopies were threatened by the removal of these primordial giants in these forests. The wild salmon that journey in record numbers through the cold rivers and …

The Meaning Of Development Of Filipinos By Filipinos In Diaspora: Rhetorical Vision In Participatory Communication, Louella Lim Lofranco Apr 2010

The Meaning Of Development Of Filipinos By Filipinos In Diaspora: Rhetorical Vision In Participatory Communication, Louella Lim Lofranco

Theses and Dissertations

Development is currently one of the drivers of international migration resulting in south-to-north or third-to-first world movements of immigrants seeking for a better life in more developed countries. Consequently, new economic diaspora communities are being formed, most of which help alleviate poverty of relatives back home through regular remittances, now considered an important source of foreign capital in many developing economies. Amidst new challenges for the field of development is the question of the relevance of development communication in migration and diaspora. This exploratory study investigates the role of participatory development communication in expanding diaspora contributions to their home countries. …

Museums In The Classroom: Preservation Virginia’S John Marshall House Trunk, Denisse Marie De Leon Apr 2010

Museums In The Classroom: Preservation Virginia’S John Marshall House Trunk, Denisse Marie De Leon

Theses and Dissertations

Since the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was passed in 2001, museum educators have faced new challenges in designing programming that incorporates state standards of education while remaining faithful to the integrity of the museum’s collection and mission. Some museums have created programs that address these educational standards and can be used in school classrooms. This project is a case study of how one Virginia museum, Preservation Virginia, created a classroom program that addresses the state mandated Standards of Learning (SOLs). The report of this project includes discussion of the current debates that surround NCLB and its relationship to …
