Forest Conservation In A Changing World: Natural Or Cultural? Example From The Western Carpathians Forests, Romania, Angelica N. Feurdean
Forest Conservation In A Changing World: Natural Or Cultural? Example From The Western Carpathians Forests, Romania, Angelica N. Feurdean
Studia UBB Geologia
In order to plan for the future management of some of the most biodiverse forests of Europe, it is essential that we understand under which condition they arose and the time and processes responsible for their variability. Here, I highlight the main findings from the palaeoecological (pollen and charcoal), archaeological and historical investigation comprising the last 6000 years, in the Apuseni Natural Park, NW Romania and discuss the effect of the past land use and forest management on these forests. I then ask what does it mean in term of conservation values if these forests are not natural but a …

Coastal Karren Features In Temperate Microtidal Settings: Spatial Organization And Temporal Evolution, Lluís Gómez-Pujol, Joan J. Fornós
Studia UBB Geologia
Basin pools are the diagnostic feature of Coastal Karren landscape at temperate settings. According to the size and connectivity parameters four morphological zones are identified along limestone coastal profiles. Each zone reflects the balance between the effects of physical and chemical weathering-erosion agents. Broadly, marine abrasion, bioerosion and biological driven solution show a larger influence seaward, whereas non-biological driven solution enhances its participation landward

A Currency For Offsetting Energy Development Impacts: Horse-Trading Sage-Grouse On The Open Market, Kevin E. Doherty, David E. Naugle, Jeffrey S. Evans
A Currency For Offsetting Energy Development Impacts: Horse-Trading Sage-Grouse On The Open Market, Kevin E. Doherty, David E. Naugle, Jeffrey S. Evans
Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications
Background: Biodiversity offsets provide a mechanism to compensate for unavoidable damages from new energy development as the U. S. increases its domestic production. Proponents argue that offsets provide a partial solution for funding conservation while opponents contend the practice is flawed because offsets are negotiated without the science necessary to backup resulting decisions. Missing in negotiations is a biologically-based currency for estimating sufficiency of offsets and a framework for applying proceeds to maximize conservation benefits. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here we quantify a common currency for offsets for greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) by estimating number of impacted birds at 4 levels of …

Freshmen First: An Evaluation Of A Ninth Grade Transition Program, Troy Wright
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effect of a freshmen transition program on student success. Success was measured by achievement in test scores and grades, retention, attendance, and discipline. This study also examined the differential effects of student outcomes by student characteristics to include, sex, race, previous middle school, economic status, disability status, and proficiency in English. There were no significant differences between participant and control groups in the bivariate analysis. There were limited findings when considering students characteristics. There were main effects on Earth Science and World Geography test scores when previous middle school was held as a constant, and there …

Didn’T My Lord Deliver Daniel? An’ Why Not Every Man? Black Theodicy In The Antebellum United States And The Problem Of The Demonic God, Emma Norman
Pitzer Senior Theses
Introduction Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel? An' Why Not Every Man: Black Theodicy in the Antebellum United States and the Problem of the Demonic God is an ambitious attempt to construct a coherent narrative that spans many centuries and connect numerous historical persons and figures in recent scholarship. I set out to understand how an enslaved person could have faith in the goodness of god despite their oppressed condition. I learned that most enslaved Africans first encountered Christianity when they became the “property” of Christians. Then, in a revolutionarily creative move, the Black community re-signified Christianity from a religious system …

The Ascension Of Yahweh: The Origins And Development Of Israelite Monotheism From The Afrasan To Josiah, Andrew Halladay
Pomona Senior Theses
INTRODUCTION: THE SEARCH FOR THE GOD OF ABRAHAM TEXT AND HISTORY: THE FORMATION OF THE ABRAHAMIC DEITY Recent years have seen substantial changes in the study of ancient Israelite religion. These changes have created ample work for scholars of religious studies and related fields as virtually all disciplines have something to say about recent archaeological and scholarly developments concerning Yahwism and its early development. In this scholarly milieu, it is difficult to present anything that is wholly new, but certainly possible to enter a spirited discourse about ancient questions. To discuss the origins and evolution of the Abrahamic deity—as I …

Logging Cross-Site Scripting Attacks In Firefox For Forensic Investigation, Mithun Vaidhyanathan
Logging Cross-Site Scripting Attacks In Firefox For Forensic Investigation, Mithun Vaidhyanathan
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
Detecting web application attacks is a task performed by many systems. An example of such a system is the open source tool NoScript, which will be discussed at various points in this work. Among these attacks, cross site scripting is a focus of this study, mainly due to the levels of concern related to it. The primary goal of this research is to analyze how efficiently a cross-site scripting attack once detected can be logged. Logging the attack has benefits from a Cyberforensics point of view. This work analyzes related efforts and the benefits of implementing such functionality. It was …

An Interdisciplinary Study Of Africa For Tens : The Dogon Of Mali, Hope Salas Gray
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This thesis presents a Social Studies curriculum guide on Africa, specifically, the Dogon people of Mali. It contains a detailed outline of possible curricular units on The Geography of Africa and Mali; Traditional Cultural Practices of the Dogon; and the Dogon Today. Related lesson plans explore ways to teach and learn about the Dogon through age-appropriate primary and secondary sources, especially by reading Dogon stories, looking at Dogon art, architecture, and ceremonies, and listening to Dogon music. These resources are discussed at length in the Annotated List of Classroom Resources section of this thesis. The curriculum also includes a step-by-step …

Not Empty, Lauren Orme
Not Empty, Lauren Orme
Scripps Senior Theses
Not Empty is a two- part exploration of the relationship between humans and nature. In this essay I intend to discuss the relationship Australian Aboriginal peoples have with their environment. Their many cultures are among the oldest surviving civilizations on the planet, and their natural history is rich and complex. I plan to compare the relationship Australian Aboriginal cultures have to their environment to that of a Western civilization, specifically the United States. Neither relationship is perfect, nor is one of them 'better.' Both have histories riddled with extinction, evolution, and the conquest of new lands. The struggle Aboriginal Australians …

White Flight And Urban Decay In Suburban Chicago, Lindsey Haines
White Flight And Urban Decay In Suburban Chicago, Lindsey Haines
Honors Projects
White flight and urban decay are issues typically analyzed in the context of the inner-city. This study builds on previous literature to test whether these phenomena have affected the Chicago suburbs in the same way as other urban areas. In particular, this study focuses on the effects of changes in racial composition, household income, and the age of the housing stock on changes in home values, the vacancy rate, the homeownership rate, unemployment, the single parent household rate, and the college completion rate. Overall the study supports the theories of white flight and filtering in the suburban Chicago context. The …
The Iconography And Role Of Serpents In Ancient Egypt: The Serpent Demon Apophis, Alfred Eaton Walker V
The Iconography And Role Of Serpents In Ancient Egypt: The Serpent Demon Apophis, Alfred Eaton Walker V
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The serpent was a dynamic icon in ancient Egyptian art and religion.Images of serpents first appeared in the Predynastic Period (ca. 5000-2920 BC) and increased in popularity and significance throughout Egyptian history.Serpents were believed to be powerful figures and often had protective, reproductive, or healing powers. The serpent demon Apophis, however, represented the antithesis of the protective, beneficial serpents of ancient Egyptian mythology. From the first mention of his name in the First Intermediate Period (2134-2040 BC), Apophis grew to become the greatest threat to the structured and ordered society of ancient Egypt. He embodied pure chaos because he sought to stop …
Multi-Scale Analysis Of Landscape And Geomorphic Controls On Stream Habitat Structure, Andrew M. Sanderson
Multi-Scale Analysis Of Landscape And Geomorphic Controls On Stream Habitat Structure, Andrew M. Sanderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Landscape and geomorphic characteristics within watersheds in the North and South Umpqua Basins in Southwestern Oregon were summarized at five spatial scales (basin, sub-basin, network, sub-network, and segment) and incorporated into multiple regression models to determine the relative effects of each on stream morphology and provide a potential predictive model of stream habitat characteristics using GIS-managed landscape variables. Measures of stream morphology included mean stream depth, mean corrected width, width-to-depth ratio, percent shade provided to habitat units, and substrate composition, summarized for 200 stream segments. While certain variables were demonstrated to have a consistent influence across more than one scale, …
