Protected Areas Reduced Poverty In Costa Rica And Thailand, Kwaw S. Andam, Paul J. Ferraro, Katharine R. E. Sims, Andrew Healy, Margaret B. Holland

Economics Faculty Works

As global efforts to protect ecosystems expand, the socioeconomic impact of protected areas on neighboring human communities continues to be a source of intense debate. The debate persists because previous studies do not directly measure socioeconomic outcomes and do not use appropriate comparison groups to account for potential confounders. We illustrate an approach using comprehensive national datasets and quasi-experimental matching methods. We estimate impacts of protected area systems on poverty in Costa Rica and Thailand and find that although communities near protected areas are indeed substantially poorer than national averages, an analysis based on comparison with appropriate controls does not …

Review Of State Laws And Practices For Disposition Of Re-Aligned Or Bypassed Segments And Associated Row, Lenahan O'Connell, Ted Grossardt Jun 2010

Review Of State Laws And Practices For Disposition Of Re-Aligned Or Bypassed Segments And Associated Row, Lenahan O'Connell, Ted Grossardt

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This study identified the laws and practices of 11 state DOTs in regard to the transfer of responsibility for re-aligned or bypassed state highway system roads to local jurisdictions - usually cities or counties. Each state's approach to such transfers was identified by obtaining and analyzing the relevant state statutes and then conducting telephone interviews with strategically placed individuals at the associated DOT. Four states require local approval before the state can abandon a road. These four have a policy of obtaining written consent for the transfer of responsibility for maintenance and do so most often prior to construction of …

Emergent Morphogenetic Design Strategies, Dawn Gunter May 2010

Emergent Morphogenetic Design Strategies, Dawn Gunter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Emergent morphogenetic designs provide a superior architectural response to programmatic, technical, structural, environmental and spatial requirements that conventional unit based architectural forms are too inflexible to fully address.

Architecture has reached an exciting stage in its development, where structures are attempting to behave more like nature, which does not function as a static state, but as a complex grouping of symbiotic processes which are constantly evolving to adapt to environmental changes.

Digital fabrication and materials engineering have promoted an explosion in formal architectural typologies. By utilizing these digital tools and enhanced materials to embrace a morphogenetic design strategy, architecture can …

International Cooperation On Climate Change Adaptation From An Economic Perspective, Kelly C. De Bruin, Rob B. Dellink, Richard S.J. Tol May 2010

International Cooperation On Climate Change Adaptation From An Economic Perspective, Kelly C. De Bruin, Rob B. Dellink, Richard S.J. Tol

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper investigates the economic incentives of countries to cooperate on international adaptation financing. Adaptation is generally implicitly incorporated in the climate change damage functions as used in Integrated Assessment Models. We replace the implicit decision on adaptation with explicit adaptation in a multi-regional setting by using an adjusted RICE model. We show that making adaptation explicit will not affect the optimal mitigation path when adaptation is set at its optimal level. Sub-optimal adaptation will, however, change the optimal mitigation path. Furthermore this paper studies for different forms of cooperation what effects international adaptation transfers will have on (i) domestic …

Peru: Camisea Gas Pipeline Inaugurate After 20 Years, Notisur Writers May 2010

Peru: Camisea Gas Pipeline Inaugurate After 20 Years, Notisur Writers

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

Twenty years after the Camisea natural-gas fields in the Peruvian department of Cuzco were discovered, President Alejandro Toledo has inaugurated the pipeline that will bring the gas from the interior to Lima and the Pacific coast. The president and his ministers say the revenues generated by the sale and distribution of gas will be an economic windfall for Peru and will revolutionize energy consumption for the country's citizens. But as the Toledo government celebrates the pipeline opening as a historic moment in the economic life of Peru, environmental and indigenous groups say the project will do significant harm to the …

Effects Of Internal Gas Explosion On An Underwater Tunnel Roof, Omar Al-Farouk Salem Al-Damluji, Akram Younis Thannon Al-Sa'aty, Rafi' Mahmoud Sulaiman Al-Nu'aimy May 2010

Effects Of Internal Gas Explosion On An Underwater Tunnel Roof, Omar Al-Farouk Salem Al-Damluji, Akram Younis Thannon Al-Sa'aty, Rafi' Mahmoud Sulaiman Al-Nu'aimy

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

An underwater reinforced concrete tunnel roof is subjected to an internal gas explosion. Dynamic analyses are performed for three cases, namely, (1) an uncoupled solution, (2) class II coupling analysis and (3) full model with class I and II couplings. Three load cases are considered, dead (gravity) load, uniformly distributed vertical loads from sand and water and finally an internal pressure gas explosion. Linear and non-linear constitutive relationships are considered for the materials constituting the gas explosion problem. Results include time deflection of tunnel roof, time histories of stresses in vertical reinforcing bars and contours of concrete stresses for tunnel …
