Applied Environmental Research

This research studied the potential of a recyclable waste bank (RWB) Sub-Sin Pattana Community, Bang Khun Thien District, Bangkok in reduction of volumes of community waste. Problems and obstacles in implementing the project were also studied. Data were collected by recyclable waste (RW) analysis, questionnaire and in-depth interview with the members and committee of RWB project. Data sources were 10 waste samples taken from 10 households, 79 respondents of structured questionnaire, 12 respondents of in-depth interview (including 10 members and 2 committee staff of the project). The study found that people registered with the RWB project sorted their waste before …

Availability And Use Of Audiovisual And Electronic Resources By Distance Learning Students In Nigerian Universities: A Case Study Of National Open University Of Nigeria (Noun), Ibadan Study Centre, Kolawole Akinjide Aramide, Omolara M. Bolarinwa

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study investigated the availability and use of audiovisual and electronic resources by distance learning students at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). A questionnaire was administered tothe distance learning students selected across the various departments of the NOUN. The findings revealed that even though NOUN made provision for audiovisual and electronic resources for students' use, a majority of the audiovisual and electronic resources are available through personal provision by the students. The study also revealed regular use of audiovisual and electronic resources by the distance learning students. Constraints on use include poor power supply, poor infrastructure, lack of adequate …

Sediment Flux Through The Rio Grande River: A Monsoonal Effect, Troy C. Hiatt Jun 2010

Sediment Flux Through The Rio Grande River: A Monsoonal Effect, Troy C. Hiatt

Theses and Dissertations

Climate has historically been recognized as an influence on sediment flux and deposition. The North American Monsoon is suggested as the forcing mechanism of deltaic progradational events of the Rio Grande River delta. Interpretations of reflection seismic profiles reveal that eustatic rise in sea-level from the Last Glacial Maximum to present is accompanied by several regressional events of the Rio Grande delta 5.5, 9.5, and 11.5 ka BP. Much of the migration of depositional facies within a delta system is forced by hinterland tectonics and base-level rise and fall. However, we suggest that the movement of facies within the Rio …

Creating A Habitat Suitability Index Model For Argali Sheep (Ovis Ammon), And Siberian Ibex (Capra Sibirica) In Ikh Nartin Reserve, Mongolia, Nanette Bragin

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Mongolia is a country with a park system of protected areas, preserving native flora and fauna. In order to inform decision makers about the status of endangered species and park land health, two species of concern, the Argali sheep (Ovis ammon) and Siberian ibex Capra siberica) in the Ikh Nart Reserve in Mongolia were studied. A Habitat Suitability Index Model was developed to study the Argali and ibex habitat preference and discern if the reserve and core zone offer optimal habitat. A total of 57 animals were examined, creating 95% and 50% home range kernels, and minimum convex polygons. The …

The Effect Of Wastewater Disposal On The Water Quality And Phytoplankton In Erbil Wastewater Channel., Yahya A. Shekha, Nadhen H. Haydar, Yadi O. Mustafa Al-Barzingy

Baghdad Science Journal

In this study, phytoplankton density, chlorophyll-a, and selected physico-chemical parameters were investigated in Erbilwastewater channel. The surveys were carried out monthly from May 2003 to April 2004. Samplings were established on three sites from headwaters to the mouth. The results showed that pH was in alkaline side of neutrality, with significant differences (P<0.05) between sites 1 and 3. TSS concentration decreased from site 1 toward site 2 (mean value, 80.15 to 25.79 mg.l-1). A clear gradual increase in mineral content (TDS) observed from site one of the channel towards the mouthpart. Soluble reactive phosphate has a concentration maximum mean value reached 48.4 μg.l-1which is recorded in site 2. A high positive relationship (P<0.01, r =0.449) obtained between phosphate concentration and phytoplankton density. The results of chlorophyll-aconcentration were (mean values, 2.26, 3.88 and 2.42 μg.l-1respectively), showed the positive relationship (P<0.05, r =0.012) with phytoplankton density . The PCA produced three significant main components which represented by more than 64.5% of the total variance, namely, nutrients related to algal productivity; disposal wastewater and storm water runoff, in which explained by 31.29, 19.68 and 13.55% respectively of the total variance of water qualityin polluted channel.

National Register Testing At 41bq285, Bosque County, Texas: Fm 56 Bridge Replacement At The North Bosque River, Timothy B. Griffith, Karl W. Kibler, Douglas K. Boyd

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted archeological test excavations at 41BQ285 in June 2006 for the Texas Department of Transportation under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 4102. Site 41BQ285, in southeastern Bosque County, was located during an archeological survey for the proposed replacement of the FM 56 bridge over the North Bosque River. It is a prehistoric campsite buried in a cumulic soil in the upper deposits of a late Holocene alluvial terrace. Mechanical excavations consisted of re-opening four backhoe trenches from the survey phase followed by hand excavation of six 1x1-m test units. This work identified three burned rock features and …

Community Gardens And Urban Agriculture: Reclaiming The Market Place, Sara Prendergast Jun 2010

Community Gardens And Urban Agriculture: Reclaiming The Market Place, Sara Prendergast

Social Sciences

This paper will first explore the health of low-income communities living in inner cities. I will use obesity as one of the main indicators of poor health and explore the lack of access to holistic diets, high costs of fresh foods, and minimal education, with the aim of revealing how hunger is a consequence of a capitalist dominated market. Following, I will investigate how urban agriculture is a holistic solution in subduing the advent of food deserts and food insecurity by serving health, educational, and social needs in low-income communities, which further creates a more socially just market.

Treatment Of Displaced Indigenous Populations In Two Large Hydro Projects In Panama, Mary Finley-Brook, Curtis Thomas Jun 2010

Treatment Of Displaced Indigenous Populations In Two Large Hydro Projects In Panama, Mary Finley-Brook, Curtis Thomas

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

The World Commission on Dams provided an analytical overview of the cumulative effects of years of dam development. A lack of commitment or capacity to cope with displacement or to consider the civil rights of, or risks to, displaced people led to the impoverishment and suffering of tens of millions and growing opposition to dams by affected communities worldwide. However, after the WCD, little has changed for the better in terms of resettlement policies. In fact, the standards of key agencies, like the Asian Development Bank, have been lowered and diluted compared to prior policies. Dam-induced development and displacement are …

Improving Student Attitudes About Science By Integrating Research Into The Introductory Chemistry Laboratory: Interdisciplinary Drinking Water Analysis, Dana Richter-Egger, James P. Hagan, Fredric C. Laquer, Neal Grandgenett, Robert Duncan Shuster

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

The integration of student research into a general chemistry laboratory and an environmental geology course has been evaluated for its effectiveness to improve (i) student attitudes about science and chemistry, (ii) student understanding of the nature of experimental science and the scientific method, and (iii) student perceptions of the application of science and the interdisciplinary nature of science. Students in introductory science courses frequently devote all or most of their time and effort to learning basic laboratory techniques by following predefined procedures that have intentionally predictable outcomes. Though this longstanding model of laboratory structure is an important means of effectively …
