Spring 2010: Let Us Love One Another, St. Norbert College

St. Norbert College Magazine 2007-2012

Love, extended through community, makes us family

The words of love and family knit together in our cover illustration are never far from the surface in conversations about the St. Norbert experience, where current students and alumni alike frame their time on campus in terms of warm and sustained relationship. The enduring and sometimes complex affections that extend through many different kinds of family experience are our focus in this issue.

On the cover: St. Norbert College was founded by the Rev. Bernard Pennings, O.Praem., who was to become abbot and whose motto, “Let us love one another” (1 John …

Background Environmental Justice: An Extension Of Rawls's Political Liberalism, Edward Abplanalp Apr 2010

Background Environmental Justice: An Extension Of Rawls's Political Liberalism, Edward Abplanalp

Department of Philosophy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation extends John Rawls’s mature theory of justice out to address the environmental challenges that citizens of liberal democracies now face. Specifically, using Rawls’s framework of political liberalism, I piece together a theory of procedural justice to be applied to a constitutional democracy. I show how citizens of pluralistic democracies should apply this theory to environmental matters in a four stage contracting procedure. I argue that, if implemented, this extension to Rawls’s theory would secure background environmental justice. I explain why the theory can be viewed as a partially specified political conception of environmental pragmatism, and how it relates …

In Service Of Whom?: The Impact Of Vincentian Universities' Institutional Investment Practices On Global Poverty, Charles R. Strain Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Charles Strain discusses the role of Vincentian universities as responsible investors and as responsible citizens and how their business practices can help alleviate global poverty. He defines three principles with which to evaluate these practices: solidarity, subsidiarity, and a preferential option for the poor. Vincentian universities should always keep Catholic social teaching in mind and operate according to socially responsible investment (SRI). Strain explains what SRI is and how its components—shareholder advocacy, social screens, and community investment—can result in investments that are ethical and profitable. Community investment is a particularly effective means of alleviating poverty.

U.S. Animal Agriculture Policy: Problems And Solutions, Steven Mischel Apr 2010

U.S. Animal Agriculture Policy: Problems And Solutions, Steven Mischel

Major Themes in Economics

The current structure of the American animal agriculture industry is fraught with problems. The externalities from it are disproportionately felt by a limited group of individuals who lack political and economic influence. Far from taxing or constraining animal agriculture, The U.S. Government subsidizes its worst practices through a variety of direct and indirect methods. This paper recommends four specific reforms in agriculture policy that will level the playing field for small farmers and push the industry toward greater economic efficiency.

Concluding Synthesis: Lessons Learned. A Complex Web: A Collective Process To Advance Social Justice, Donna Haig Friedman, Jennifer Cohen, Amnon Reichman, James Morgan

New England Journal of Public Policy

In Blessed Unrest, referenced by the opening quotation and several essay authors, Paul Hawken uses the metaphor of the immune system to describe the connectivity of organizations and activists across the world fiercely working to realize local and global social, economic, political, and environmental justice. Just as the invisible but interconnected parts of the body’s immune system jump into concerted action to restore health to an ill body, this social-change movement is organizing from the bottom up and emerging as an extraordinary and creative expression of people’s unstoppable need to reimagine their relationships to the environment and to one another. …

Climate Change, Environmental Justice, And Vulnerability: An Exploratory Spatial Analysis, Sacoby M. Wilson, Roland Richard, Lesley Joseph, Edith M. Williams Mar 2010

Climate Change, Environmental Justice, And Vulnerability: An Exploratory Spatial Analysis, Sacoby M. Wilson, Roland Richard, Lesley Joseph, Edith M. Williams

Faculty Publications

Research has demonstrated that vulnerable populations including disadvantaged populations of color live in areas that may place them at higher risk of exposure to social and environmental hazards. Due to climate change, these populations may experience worse health outcomes and environmental health disparities. The purpose of this project was to explore the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assess areas that may be vulnerable to climate change across the United States. We employed ArcGIS 9.3 to create vulnerability scores for areas across the country that may be that may be impacted by climate change at the county level in …

Campaigns To Change Health Damaging Corporate Practices, Nicholas Freudenberg Mar 2010

Campaigns To Change Health Damaging Corporate Practices, Nicholas Freudenberg

Publications and Research

When corporations claim the same citizenship rights as human citizens, they exercise an undue influence on health policy and democratic processes. Surprisingly, the same basic repertoire of tactics has been found to be employed by corporations to effect this influence, regardless of the specific industry at work. In this book, authors from around the world reveal the range of tactics used across the corporate world that ultimately favor the bottom line over the greater good.

The Bottom Line or Public Health deconstructs some of the most ubiquitous tactics at play, including public relations, political influence, legal maneuvering, and financial power, …

Pining For Sustainability, Timothy M. Mulvaney Mar 2010

Pining For Sustainability, Timothy M. Mulvaney

Faculty Scholarship

The survey results discussed in Part I below reveal substantial paper consumption excesses in the existing law journal system. Though only thirty-three primary law journals responded to the survey, making extrapolation across the general population of all law journals difficult, the aggregate data is illuminating nonetheless. Based upon a very conservative evaluation of the data set, the respondent journals reported printing nearly seventeen million pages of paper in the one-year term of the 2008-2009 editorial boards. Isolated practices proved particularly disconcerting. For instance, one journal reported printing a full, single-sided copy of each of the more than two thousand electronically …

Pining For Sustainability, Timothy M. Mulvaney

University of Richmond Law Review

In the legal academic community, there are significant positive signs demonstrating attention to sustainable practices, from course offerings to many day-to-day operations. Scholarly research also reflects this positive trend. Much of this recent scholarship assesses sustainability-focused regulatory and normative efforts to address the impacts associated with a warming planet in marked detail, and there is an additional plethora of writing on the many topics beyond the changing climate that raise sustainability questions.
