A Feminist Struggle? South African Hiv Activism As Feminist Politics, Katarina Jungar, Elina Oinas May 2010

A Feminist Struggle? South African Hiv Activism As Feminist Politics, Katarina Jungar, Elina Oinas

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper is a feminist reading of HIV activism in South Africa, of a social movement that does not describe itself as a women’s movement: it advocates both women’s and men’s, trans, hetero- and homosexual peoples’ rights for adequate health care and antiretroviral medication. Like many others, Chandra Talpade Mohanty suggests that today’s powerful feminism is found in anti-globalization movements that do not necessarily call themselves feminist. These critiques maintain that the theory, critique and activism of grass-root women across the globe, for example around anti-globalization, should also inform academic feminist discussions. This article studies discourses on HIV in Africa …

Religious And Environmental Values In Pcusa And Ucc Church Camp Programs, Ross S. Bash

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The association between denominational affiliation, as the independent variable, and (1) religious values, (2) environmental values, and (3) the integration of religious values and environmental values, as the dependent variables, in church camp programs of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (PCUSA) and the United Church of Christ (UCC) was examined through survey research of PCUSA and UCC church camps across the United States. The results indicated that there is a significant statistical relationship between PCUSA and UCC church camp programs by reference to denominational affiliation for all three dependent variables.

Investigating The Relationship Between The Policy Implementation Process And The Utilization Of Information Technology In A Constitutional Republic: The Case Of I-269 Nepa Process, Joseph Hampton Holland May 2010

Investigating The Relationship Between The Policy Implementation Process And The Utilization Of Information Technology In A Constitutional Republic: The Case Of I-269 Nepa Process, Joseph Hampton Holland

Theses and Dissertations

Information technologies (IT) have provided significant benefits for society. By drawing on the assumptions of the New Public Management (NPM) framework, the author investigates how, in one case, IT alters the policy implementation process. Additionally, the author tests reinforcement theory, sociotechnical theory, and technological determinism to determine which IT model best explains the utilization of IT at the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT). This study examines the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969. By conducting interviews, analyzing documents, and examining a physical artifact, the author explores the administration of an economic impact analysis (EIA) that was conducted on the …

Canaries In The Coal Mine: The Tactical Use Of The National Labor Relations Act To Aid In The Protection Of Non-Union Workers Exposed To Pollutants, Michael C. Duff

Faculty Articles

Canaries were used in times past to alert miners to the presence of dangerous gases in a mine A canary would die and the miners would thereby become aware of deadly but sometimes odorless gases Just as canaries have alerted miners to the presence of dangerous gases in mines workers exposed to dangerous pollutants and conditions in workplaces may function as societal canaries warning the broader public of environmental dangers but hopefully without having to die in the process To perform this role the workers must live to work and protest another day Section 7 of the National Labor Relations …

Articulating Social Change In Puerto Rico: Environmental Education As A Model For Youth Socio-Political Development And Community-Led School Reform, Federico Cintrón-Moscoso Apr 2010

Articulating Social Change In Puerto Rico: Environmental Education As A Model For Youth Socio-Political Development And Community-Led School Reform, Federico Cintrón-Moscoso

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recent attempts at developing an environmental education agenda in public schools emphasize the need to foster greater public awareness about environmental rights, issues, and solutions, while producing citizens with the knowledge and skills needed to address the ecological challenges of contemporary society. However, some scholars have argued that the attempt to integrate environmental principles into the school curricula has created a conflict between the politically-oriented goals of environmental education and the more passive practices of uncritical assimilation and reproduction found in many schools today (Stevenson 2007). Moreover, although there is a need for public schools to take on the challenge …

Distribution Of Toxic Sites In Alaska In Relation To Populated Areas, Michelle Russell, Blair Braverman Apr 2010

Distribution Of Toxic Sites In Alaska In Relation To Populated Areas, Michelle Russell, Blair Braverman

Atlas of Maine

This project is a GIS analysis examining the distribution of toxic sites in Alaska, including Superfund sites, Toxics Release Inventory sites, mining waste sites, and Formerly Used Defense Sites, in relation to populated areas. Our goal was to determine whether these hazardous sites are located disproportionately near indigenous communities, whose populations may be particularly vulnerable to toxics due to their subsistence lifestyles. Our statistical analysis found that, in census tracts with at least one identified toxic site, the percentage of the population identifying as Alaska Native is 59% higher than in those census tracts without any toxic sites. Further analysis …

Simplicity And The City: Understanding The Voluntary Simplicity Movement In Melbourne, Gershwin Penn Apr 2010

Simplicity And The City: Understanding The Voluntary Simplicity Movement In Melbourne, Gershwin Penn

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this study was to understand the lifestyle of members of the voluntary simplicity movement in an urban setting. I sought to understand how they practiced simplicity in their day to day lives, how simplicity effected their emotional life, how simplicity influenced their values, how simplicity influenced their interaction with the city, and what their general ethos was. This study was conducted to understand how it is possible for individuals to live ecologically and socially responsible lives in settings that, by in large, reject their values. I conducted fifteen face to face in-depth interviews in Melbourne in April …
