Financial Statements Are About To Get A New Look, Clemense Ehoff Jr.

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

In October 2008, The FASB and the IASB issued a discussion letter for comment proposing a complete redesign of financial statements. This was the result of a project that began for both boards in 2001. More than 200 comment letters were received from individuals, accounting firms, professional societies, corporations, and others from the business community. The FASB and IASB have analyzed the input, and are currently preparing an exposure draft scheduled for release in early 2011. Amazon's Clout: World's Largest Online Retailer Joins The Cloud Computing Camp, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Many organisations invest heavily in information technology, acquiring the best IT equipment, backup for the best IT equipment, and hiring highly skilled and reputable IT consultants and vendors. While a great IT infrastructure will be critical to business success, its escalating costs have become somewhat prohibitive, thanks, in part, to a vicious lock-in cycle that handcuffs organisations to heavy machines. Enter cloud computing – a new paradigm in IT management that slashes capital expenditure and operating costs. Amazon.com, which runs the world's largest online retail store on a cloud, believes that cloud computing is the way forward for the connected …

Efficacy Of The United States Safe Harbor Framework, Margaret M. Beck

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This study assessed the efficacy of the United States Safe Harbor Framework by approximating the size of a population of large United States organizations (50,000 - 500,000 employees) that were eligible to participate in the Safe Harbor that did not participate. The Safe Harbor Framework, administered by the United States Department of Commerce, is a voluntary program that assists United States organizations in complying with the European Union Data Privacy Directive. Out of a population of 337 large organizations, 168 were potentially eligible to participate in the Safe Harbor Framework. One hundred and ten, or 66%, of these organizations did …

Implementing Reading And Writing In Secondary Mathematics, Mari E. Eisenhart Dec 2010

Implementing Reading And Writing In Secondary Mathematics, Mari E. Eisenhart

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Literacy in secondary mathematics continues to be difficult for many. Mathematics teachers and researchers continue to develop support documents for secondary math teachers. It is important to utilize the literacy strategies already established by other content areas. It is feasible to adjust these strategies to suit the needs of mathematics students. Literacy across the content areas is a relatively new idea in education, but literacy in mathematics is even more foreign. It is necessary to use the available literacy strategies to develop materials applicable in the secondary mathematics classroom.

Attorney Deceit Statutes: Promoting Professionalism Through Criminal Prosecutions And Treble Damages, Alex B. Long Dec 2010

Attorney Deceit Statutes: Promoting Professionalism Through Criminal Prosecutions And Treble Damages, Alex B. Long

Scholarly Works

Unbeknownst to many lawyers, numerous jurisdictions - including New York and California - have statutes on the books that single out lawyers who engage in deceit or collusion. In nearly all of these jurisdictions, a lawyer found to have engaged in deceit or collusion faces criminal penalties and/or civil liability in the form of treble damages. Until recently, these attorney deceit statutes have languished in obscurity and, through a series of restrictive readings of the statutory language, have been rendered somewhat irrelevant. However, in 2009, the New York Court of Appeals breathed new life into New York’s attorney deceit statute …

This project will take place during the 2006 and 2007 school years. I will be mentoring seven new teachers at the Medina Valley High School for two years. This program is in part a result of the No Child Left Behind Act. It is designed to reduce premature "leakage" from the profession of disillusioned new teachers by providing teachers with a trusted, supportive leadership and to ensure that the new teachers will grow in their profession to benefit their students, school and community. I will also provide spiritual support when needed and asked. I will maintain communications and meet with …

The Tarai: A Part Of Moghlan Or Gorkha? Perspectives From The Time Of The Anglo- Gorkha War (1814-1816), Bernardo Michael

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The Tarai has always been considered an integral part of the modern Nepali state. However, the status of this important stretch of territory was open to ambiguity and flux in much of the period prior to the Anglo-Gorkha War of 1814-1816. A host of petty hill principalities and little kingdoms, further south in Moghlan (the plains of North India below the foothills of the Himalayas) constantly competed to control these lands and their resources. Furthermore, a web of tenurial, taxation, and hierarchical political relationships knitted the lands of the tarai to those of Moghlan. For the rulers of the emerging …

Making A Case For Arts Administrators: Maintaining Interdisciplinary Arts Programs In Public Schools, Samantha Jardon-Peppard Dec 2010

Making A Case For Arts Administrators: Maintaining Interdisciplinary Arts Programs In Public Schools, Samantha Jardon-Peppard

Graduate Theses

For decades interdisciplinary arts programs have been developed and implemented in public schools throughout our nation. Much research has been dedicated to proving the benefits of interdisciplinary arts education, results of which can be found in reports such as Champions of Change and Project Zero. However, little research has been dedicated to how an interdisciplinary arts program is maintained in a school once it has been initiated and who is responsible for its development and sustainability. Chapter one of this thesis reviews some history of arts education, why the arts have become a vital part of education, and how arts …

Developing Alphabetic Knowledge In A School-To-Home Project With Students Who Are At-Risk: Literature Review, Julie Ann Armstrong Dec 2010

Developing Alphabetic Knowledge In A School-To-Home Project With Students Who Are At-Risk: Literature Review, Julie Ann Armstrong

Early and Special Education Graduate Projects and Theses

Literacy skills are developing in children from the time they are born and should be nurtured during the preschool years (Joint Position Statement, 2005). There are important literacy skill sets for children to acquire to be competent readers. The 2009 National Early Literacy Panel has defined one of these skills as alphabetic knowledge (Bell & Westberg, 2009). Alphabetic knowledge is being able to recognize and name letters and their sounds. The research shows that mastery of alphabetic skills is required before children can engage successfully in phonemic awareness. (Bara, Gentaz & Cole, 2007). Parents can facilitate their child’s mastery of …

Developing Alphabetic Knowledge In A School-To-Home Project With Students Who Are At-Risk: Alphabetic Knowledge Activities Handbook, Julie Ann Armstrong

Early and Special Education Graduate Projects and Theses

Early childhood educators are on the frontline of developing emergent literacy skills in their students. Research is abundant and clear about the importance of exposure to and experience with literacy activities for young children (Joint Position Statement- International Reading Association and the National Association for the Education of Young Children, 2005). However, students arrive in the classroom with varying skills and backgrounds relative to literacy, and many students are in a position to be considered at-risk of school failure. Teaching this population of students can be a challenge. This Alphabetic Knowledge Activities handbook was created to be a resource for …

Machiguenga Mobilization In The Peruvian Amazon: An Analysis Of Comaru As An Effective Change Agent, Casey Shannon Harrington

Geography Capstone Projects

COMARU (Consejo Machiguenga del Río Urubamba) is an indigenous organization that promotes the rights of thirty native Amazonian communities in the face of the Camisea Project, a massive natural gas extraction project. The state has consistently ignored negative health, environmental, and cultural impacts from five spills that have occurred in the natural gas pipeline, and the communities the right of consultation granted to them in the International Labor Organization’s Convention 169. This paper, using interviews with Machiguenga community members and COMARU leadership in addition to political ecology scholarship, analyzes the success of COMARU’s politicized and depoliticized strategies. Through the use …

Learning That Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts: Efforts To Build An Integrative Learning Model In Music Management, David Chase, Keith Hatschek

Conservatory of Music Faculty Articles

How can music industry programs best prepare students for the near constant change and ambiguity engendered by the rapid pace of technological and structural change to the global music and entertainment business? For the authors, the answer to this question has been to develop a new model for teaching and learning in the Music Management degree program they direct. This article provides an explanation for the process of developing this revised program. It is structured in two parts, which follow a brief introduction: the fi rst part looks at the changing landscape of approaches to student learning and its meaning …
