The Economic Impact Of Local Immigration Regulation: An Empirical Analysis, Huyen Pham, Pham Hoang Van Nov 2010

The Economic Impact Of Local Immigration Regulation: An Empirical Analysis, Huyen Pham, Pham Hoang Van

Cardozo Law Review

A wave of local anti-immigration laws has swept the country, triggering contentious debate and raising significant legal and policy issues. One critical dimension that has been largely ignored, however, is the economic impact of these laws: Are jurisdictions with them better off economically than those without them?

In the first empirical study of this issue, we analyze the economic impact of local anti-immigration laws. The laws take different forms - some authorize local police to enforce federal immigration laws, some restrict benefits like housing and employment to those with legal immigration status, and some require all government transactions to be …

Smu-Sis At Tac 2010 - Kbp Track Entity Linking, Swapna Gottipati, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Entity linking task is a process of linking the named entity within the unstructured text to the entity in the Knowledge Base. Entity liking to the relevant knowledge is useful in various information extraction and natural language processing applications that improve the user experiences such as search, summarization and so on. We propose the two way entity linking approach to reformulate query, disambiguate the entity and link to the relevant KB repository. This paper describes the details of our participation in TAC 2010 - Knowledge Base Population track. We provided an innovative approach to disambiguate the entity by query reformulation …

Guatemala Rising, One Girl At A Time: Findings From The 2009–2010 Abriendo Oportunidades Evaluation, Nicole Cushman

Adolescents and Young People

This report documents the process, key results, and lessons learned during the evaluation of the 2009–10 cycle of the Abriendo Oportunidades program. Abriendo is one of very few youth-serving programs in Guatemala that specifically targets one of the country’s largest and most vulnerable and underserved population segments; namely rural indigenous girls and young women ages 8–24. The program divides this critical demographic into age-appropriate cohorts and works with them to build their health, social, and economic assets as key strategies to improve health and education outcomes, improve gender equality and promote community development—thereby contributing to breaking the poverty cycle that …

Overcoming The Model Minority Myth: Experiences Of Filipino American Graduate Students, Kevin L. Nadal, Stephanie T. Pituc, Marc P. Johnston, Theresa Esparrago

Publications and Research

Filipino Americans are one of the largest immigrant groups in the United States and the second largest Asian American/Pacific Islander ethnic group. However, there is little research focusing on the unique experiences of this group, particularly in higher education. This paper presents a qualitative exploration of the experiences of Filipino American graduate students utilizing consensual qualitative research methodology. Results were categorized into domains and themes, with an example of a domain being "deficiencies and lack of resources" and an example of a theme being "Filipino Americans as different from Asian Americans." Implications for higher education administrators and researchers are discussed.

The Limits Of Constitutional Convergence, Eric A. Posner, Rosalind Dixon Nov 2010

The Limits Of Constitutional Convergence, Eric A. Posner, Rosalind Dixon

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Globalization, some legal scholars suggest, is a force that makes increasing convergence among different countries' constitutions more or less inevitable. This Essay explores this hypothesis by analyzing both the logic – and potential limits – to four different mechanisms of constitutional convergence: first, changes in global “superstructure”; second, comparative learning; third, international coercion; and fourth, global competition. For each mechanism, it shows, quite special conditions will in fact be required before global convergence is likely even at the level of legal policy. At a constitutional level, it further suggests, it will be even rarer for these mechanisms to create wholesale …

Semi-Autonomous Virtual Valet Parking, Arne Suppe, Luis Navarro-Serment, Aaron Steinfeld Nov 2010

Semi-Autonomous Virtual Valet Parking, Arne Suppe, Luis Navarro-Serment, Aaron Steinfeld

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite regulations specifying parking spots that support wheelchair vans, it is not uncommon for end users to encounter problems with clearance for van ramps. Even if a driver elects to park in the far reaches of a parking lot as a precautionary measure, there is no guarantee that the spot next to their van will be empty when they return. Likewise, the prevalence of older drivers who experience significant difficulty with ingress and egress from vehicles is nontrivial and the ability to fully open a car door is important. This work describes a method and user interaction for low cost, …

The Impact Of Social Media On Software Engineering Practices And Tools, Margaret-Anne Storey, Christoph Treude, Arie Van Deursen, Li-Te Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Today's generation of software developers frequently make use of social media, either as an adjunct or integrated into a wide range of tools ranging from code editors and issue trackers, to IDEs and web-based portals. The role of social media usage in software engineering is not well understood, and yet the use of these mechanisms influences software development practices. In this position paper, we advocate for research that strives to understand the benefits, risks and limitations of using social media in software development at the team, project and community levels. Guided by the implications of current tools and social media …

An Analytic Characterization Of Model Minimization In Factored Markov Decision Processes, Guo W., Tze-Yun Leong Nov 2010

An Analytic Characterization Of Model Minimization In Factored Markov Decision Processes, Guo W., Tze-Yun Leong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Model minimization in Factored Markov Decision Processes (FMDPs) is concerned with finding the most compact partition of the state space such that all states in the same block are action-equivalent. This is an important problem because it can potentially transform a large FMDP into an equivalent but much smaller one, whose solution can be readily used to solve the original model. Previous model minimization algorithms are iterative in nature, making opaque the relationship between the input model and the output partition. We demonstrate that given a set of well-defined concepts and operations on partitions, we can express the model minimization …

Exploring Asian Female Pastors' Leadership Roles In The Church: Using Deborah's Story, Yu-Fen Lin, Chi-Sing Li, Beverly J. Irby, Genevieve Brown Nov 2010

Exploring Asian Female Pastors' Leadership Roles In The Church: Using Deborah's Story, Yu-Fen Lin, Chi-Sing Li, Beverly J. Irby, Genevieve Brown

The Qualitative Report

Women in many Christian cultures are told that men are strong and should lead the church. Consequently, some women rationalize that they should not assume top leadership roles in the church. When they do assume such roles, many female pastors experience challenges. The purpose of our qualitative case study was to give voice to Asian female pastors (AFPs) by having them share challenges they experienced in the Taiwanese Presbyterian Church and relate those challenges to the experiences of Deborah in the biblical story found in Judges 4 and 5. Reported in this paper are the results of focus groups centered …

Grand Juries And Expertise In The Administrative State, Kevin Washburn

Faculty Book Display Case

Grand Jury 2.0: Modern Perspectives on the Grand Jury challenges the American legal culture to re-imagine the grand jury and proposes ways to adapt the grand jury's proud heritage to the needs and realities of modern criminal justice. Chapters provide a rare peek into the black box of grand juror deliberations, reflect on empirical evidence related to the grand jury's often overlooked role in charging and plea bargaining practices, and explore what state grand juries tell us about the institution's potential. Other chapters re-examine the grand jury's seemingly settled historical narrative, emphasize the role the grand jury can perform in …

Comparison Of Acute Physiological Effects Between Alternating Current And Pulsed Current Electrical Muscle Stimulation, Abdulaziz A. Aldayel Nov 2010

Comparison Of Acute Physiological Effects Between Alternating Current And Pulsed Current Electrical Muscle Stimulation, Abdulaziz A. Aldayel

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is widely used in rehabilitation and sport training, and alternating current and pulsed current EMS are commonly used. However, no systematic comparison between alternating and pulsed current EMS has been made in the previous studies. The main aim of this research was to compare acute physiological responses between the alternating and pulsed current EMS. The secondary purpose of the research was to investigate further muscle damage induced by EMS-evoked isometric contractions. Three experimental studies were conducted in the thesis project together with literature review about EMS.

Transforming Grief: The Use Of Images During Bereavement In Mexico And The United States, Rebecca M. Reséndiz Rodriguez Nov 2010

Transforming Grief: The Use Of Images During Bereavement In Mexico And The United States, Rebecca M. Reséndiz Rodriguez

School of Medicine Publications

According to the literature, bereavement photography was an important part of funeral rituals in many countries, including Mexicoand the United States. By the early to mid- 20th century, the custom appeared to have fallen out of favor in both countries except in the case of neonatal bereavement photography, at least in theUnited States. By comparing participants from 2 distinct cultures - theUnited States andMexico - I hope to show that bereavement photography can still be a useful tool during grieving. Anxiety and depression related to the topic of death will be evaluated for differences or similarities between the 2 …

A 30-Per-Cent Deviation Is Too Wide, Tan K. B. Eugene

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Following Prime Minister Lee's recent announcement that the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) had been convened, SMU Assistant Professor Eugene Tan opined that the 30-per-cent deviation rule, of which the EBRC operates on, is too wide and ?overly-generous? in small and compact Singapore. Professor Tan also commented that the committee's redrawing of electoral boundaries should avoid being seen as gerrymandering.

Group Reputation, Anonymous Matching, And External Monitoring In A Model Of Corruption, Huan Wang, Yi Zhang Nov 2010

Group Reputation, Anonymous Matching, And External Monitoring In A Model Of Corruption, Huan Wang, Yi Zhang

Research Collection School Of Economics

We explore what group reputation is and model its formation and evolution. Based solely on group signals, we define a player’s group reputation as the belief that others have about the characteristics of the group the player belongs to. A model of group reputation of civil servants with anonymous matching and external monitoring is constructed to characterize the strategic behavior of potential bribers and civil servants, the corresponding levels of corruption, possible anti-corruption policies, and the effects of these policies. Our results indicate that as there are two types of corruption behavior of civil servants: accepting bribes and dereliction of …

Redemption And Resistance: Lessons In Non-Violent Action From Early Aotearoa/New Zealand, Ian Macduff Nov 2010

Redemption And Resistance: Lessons In Non-Violent Action From Early Aotearoa/New Zealand, Ian Macduff

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article provides a brief account of the non-violent resistance of two Maori chiefs, Te Whiti and Tohu, in 19th century New Zealand. Each example of such non-violent or passive resistance is unique to its historical and cultural context; but at the same time there is a tangible common ground between this example and those found elsewhere, such as Martin Luther King and Gandhi. This article will also draw a link between the politics of acts of resistance – in this case, resistance to the forceful acquisition of Maori land – and faith-based justifications. In conclusion, it will be suggested …

The High Court decision of E C Investment Holding Pte Ltd v Ridout Residence Pte Ltd and another (Orion Oil Limited and another, Interveners) [2010] SGHC 270 (“E C Investment”) raises several contractual issues, chief amongst which – and the focus of this note – concern duress. This note discusses three points of the judgment relating to duress: (a) the reaffirmation of economic duress as a vitiating factor; (b) the status of lawful threats; and (c) the burden of proof in economic duress cases.

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Building on information-processing perspectives and the Japanese contextual factors, this study investigates the relationships between firm strategy and executive bonus pay as well as the moderating role of foreign ownership on the strategy–compensation relationship in Japanese firms. We focus on R&D investment and product diversification as strategy variables and investigate their direct effects on executive bonus pay. Further, we examine the moderating effects of foreign ownership on the strategy–pay sensitivity. The results, based on a sample of the 148 largest industrial firms in Japan for the 1990–1997 period, show that both R&D investment and product diversification are positively related to …
