Location-Based Services: Time For A Privacy Check-In, Chris Conley, Nicole Ozer, Hari O'Connell, Ellen Ginsburg, Tamar Gubins

Faculty Scholarship

Need to get directions when you are lost? Want to know if your friends are in the neighborhood? Location-based services – applications and websites that provide services based on your current location – can put this information and more in the palm of your hand.

But outdated privacy laws and varying corporate practices could mean that sensitive information about who you are, where you go, what you do, and who you know end up being shared, sold, or turned over to the government.

Can location-based services protect your privacy? Do they? And what can we do to improve the situation? …

Age-Related Changes In Types And Contexts Of Physical Activity In Middle School Girls, Russell R. Pate, James F. Sallis, Dianne S. Ward, June Stevens, Gregory J. Welk, Deborah Rohm Young, Jared B. Jobe, Patricia K. Strikmiller Nov 2010

Purpose - To describe developmental trends in participation in specific forms of physical activity in 6th- and 8th-grade girls.

Methods - Data for this study are from the Trial of Activity for Adolescent Girls. Self-reported physical activity, anthropometric, and demographic data were collected from random cross sections of 6th-grade girls in 36 middle schools in six U.S. communities. The same data were collected …

Reduction Of The Misinformation Effect By Arousal Induced After Learning, Shaun English, Kristy A. Nielson Nov 2010

Reduction Of The Misinformation Effect By Arousal Induced After Learning, Shaun English, Kristy A. Nielson

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Misinformation introduced after events have already occurred causes errors in later retrieval. Based on literature showing that arousal induced after learning enhances delayed retrieval, we investigated whether post-learning arousal can reduce the misinformation effect. 251 participants viewed four short film clips, each followed by a retention test, which for some participants included misinformation. Afterward, participants viewed another film clip that was either arousing or neutral. One week later, the arousal group recognized significantly more veridical details and endorsed significantly fewer misinformation items than the neutral group. The findings suggest that arousal induced after learning reduced source confusion, allowing participants to …

Reconceptualizing The Fifth Amendment Prohibition Of Adverse Comment On Criminal Defendants' Trial Sentence, Jeffrey Bellin Nov 2010

Reconceptualizing The Fifth Amendment Prohibition Of Adverse Comment On Criminal Defendants' Trial Sentence, Jeffrey Bellin

Faculty Publications

Griffin v. California holds that the Fifth Amendment privilege against compelled self-incrimination prohibits a prosecutor from arguing that a defendant’s failure to testify supports an inference of guilt. In the four decades since Griffin was decided, Griffin’s doctrinal underpinnings have been strongly criticized by prominent jurists and commentators, and even Griffin’s contemporary defenders struggle to place the constitutional prohibition of adverse comment on defendant silence within a coherent doctrinal framework.

In light of these largely unanswered criticisms, this Article posits that the current Fifth Amendment-based prohibition of adverse comment is untenable and must be recast in a more narrowly tailored …

The Messy Reality Of Organised Crime Research, Mark Findlay, Nafis Hanif Nov 2010

The Messy Reality Of Organised Crime Research, Mark Findlay, Nafis Hanif

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The analysis starts out by confronting and exposing the ideological motivations for dualism in conventional organised crime research. In order to suggest a cognitive pathway beyond this restrictive normative frame, it is essential to appreciate its potency and resilience. Law enforcement language buoyed up by popular culture representations of gangs, syndicates and crime bosses have become the accepted starting point for much research in the field. Research from this perspective, we suggest, plays its own part in organised crime mystification and as such retards the critical utility of enterprise theory. Next the paper shows how distracted and distorted theorising infects …

Salvage Awards On The Somali Coast: Who Pays For Public And Private Rescue Efforts In Piracy Crises?, Geoffrey Christopher Rapp Nov 2010

Salvage Awards On The Somali Coast: Who Pays For Public And Private Rescue Efforts In Piracy Crises?, Geoffrey Christopher Rapp

American University Law Review

This paper, a contribution to the "Troubled Waters: Combating Modern Piracy with the Rule of Law" symposium, explores the question of who pays for rescue efforts associated with maritime piracy. The paper explores the availability of admiralty law's salvage awards to governmental and non-governmental actors who intervene to rescue vessels and crew from pirates. Such awards provide an unusual incentive to rescue, traditionally unavailable for land-based rescue, but may raise complicated questions of policy and international law. The paper concludes by comparing salvage awards to a recent trend in American states to adopt "Search and Rescue" expense statutes allowing governments …

Climate Change And The Green Energy Paradox: The Consequences For Twaite Shad Alosa Fallax From The River Severn, U.K., Mw Aprahamian, Cd Aprahamian, Am Knights

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

A stock–recruitment model with a temperature component was used to estimate the effect of an increase in temperature predicted by climate change projections on population persistence and distribution of twaite shad Alosa fallax. An increase of 1 and 2° C above the current mean summer (June to August) water temperature of 17·8° C was estimated to result in a three and six-fold increase in the population, respectively. Climate change is also predicted to result in an earlier commencement to their spawning migration into fresh water. The model was expanded to investigate the effect of any additional mortality that might arise …

The Doppelgänger Tale And The Masquerade Of Race: The Enduring Influence Of Dumas` Iron Mask And Twain`S Switched Heroes, Virginia Payne Dow Nov 2010

The Doppelgänger Tale And The Masquerade Of Race: The Enduring Influence Of Dumas` Iron Mask And Twain`S Switched Heroes, Virginia Payne Dow

Masters Theses

Although separated by the Atlantic Ocean, nineteenth-century authors Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) and then Mark Twain (1835-1910) separately created narratives involving the doppelganger motif which both challenged the accepted social ideals and spawned a plethora of imitations. These tales of switched identities served to critique social stratification and racial discrimination.

Given the current influx of interest in the doppelganger paradigm within the media, and particularly in light of rising cultural studies involving race, class, and social stratification, the main novels of this study--Dumas' The Man in the Iron Mask and Georges, and Twain's Pudd'nhead Wilson--warrant ever-increasing interest due to their discourse …

Situating Spatial Templates For Human-Robot Interaction, John D. Kelleher, Robert J. Ross, Brian Mac Namee, Colm Sloan Nov 2010

Situating Spatial Templates For Human-Robot Interaction, John D. Kelleher, Robert J. Ross, Brian Mac Namee, Colm Sloan

Conference papers

People often refer to objects by describing the object's spatial location relative to another object. Due to their ubiquity in situated discourse, the ability to use 'locative expressions' is fundamental to human-robot dialogue systems. A key component of this ability are computational models of spatial term semantics. These models bridge the grounding gap between spatial language and sensor data. Within the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics communities, spatial template based accounts, such as the Attention Vector Sum model (Regier and Carlson, 2001), have found considerable application in mediating situated human-machine communication (Gorniak, 2004; Brenner et a., 2007; Kelleher and Costello, 2009). …

We report the results of the first search for gravitational waves from compact binary coalescence using data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory and Virgo detectors. Five months of data were collected during the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory's S5 and Virgo's VSR1 science runs. The search focused on signals from binary mergers with a total mass between 2 and 35M⊙. No gravitational waves are identified. The cumulative 90%-confidence upper limits on the rate of compact binary coalescence are calculated for nonspinning binary neutron stars, black hole-neutron star systems, and binary black holes to be 8.7 x 10- …

Three Versions Of The Politics Of Conscience: Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke, Ronald Beiner Nov 2010

Three Versions Of The Politics Of Conscience: Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke, Ronald Beiner

San Diego Law Review

The organizers of this symposium have posed the question: is the idea of conscience fundamentally rooted in religious commitments? This question inevitably draws us back to the seventeenth century, for that is when the discourse of conscience ultimately originated. And when we consult the most important sources from that epoch, we get, I believe a clear answer to the question, although it may not be the answer that the organizers of the symposium anticipated when they conceived the theme of this gathering.

Stability And Charge Transfer Levels Of Extrinsic Defects In Linbo₃, Haixuan Xu, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy, Donghwa Lee, Susan Sinnott, Venkatraman Gopalan, Volkmar Dierolf, Simon R. Phillpot Nov 2010

Stability And Charge Transfer Levels Of Extrinsic Defects In Linbo₃, Haixuan Xu, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy, Donghwa Lee, Susan Sinnott, Venkatraman Gopalan, Volkmar Dierolf, Simon R. Phillpot

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The technologically important incorporation of extrinsic defects (Mg2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Er3+, and Nd3+) in LiNbO3 is investigated using density-functional theory combined with thermodynamic calculations. Defect energies, the charge compensation mechanisms, and charge transfer levels, are determined for congruent and stoichiometric compositions. In general, under congruent (Nb2O5-rich) conditions impurities occupy lithium sites, compensated by lithium vacancies. Under stoichiometric (Li2O-rich) conditions, impurities occupy both lithium and niobium sites. The effects of the concentration of Mg on the dominant defect and site occupancy are analyzed. In …

Sex Ratios, Divorce Laws And The Marriage Market, Brishti Guha Nov 2010

Sex Ratios, Divorce Laws And The Marriage Market, Brishti Guha

Research Collection School Of Economics

We show how an interaction between the skewness of the sex ratio and the jump in divorce rates after a liberalization in divorce laws can obtain in a model of marriage market matching with non-transferable utility. This model is partly motivated by a significant cross-country correlation between these two variables. We also find that men’s hopes or fears about women’s marriage market odds are self-confirming under mutual consent, resulting in multiple equilibria. The multiplicity vanishes with a more skewed sex ratio or a liberalization of divorce laws. Our work sheds some light on the possible implications of divorce liberalization and …

Conformism And Turnout, Massimiliano Landi, Mauro Sodini Nov 2010

Conformism And Turnout, Massimiliano Landi, Mauro Sodini

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper proposes a model of turnout in which citizens have a preference for conformism, which adds to the instrumental preference for the electoral outcome. Under this environment multiple equilibria arise, some that generate a (more realistic) high level of turnout, for a wide rage of parameter values. It is also shown that high levels of turnout are robust to the introduction of asymmetry and heterogeneity in the parameter governing the preference for conformism and with respect to the reference group for conformism.

This model suggests that high turnout can only be achieved as the outcome of a particular coordination …

Unpacking Sources Of Comparative Advantage: A Quantitative Approach, Davin Chor Nov 2010

Unpacking Sources Of Comparative Advantage: A Quantitative Approach, Davin Chor

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper develops an approach for quantifying the importance of different sources of comparative advantage, by extending the Eaton and Kortum (2002) model to predict industry trade flows. In this framework, comparative advantage is determined by the interaction of country and industry characteristics, with countries specializing in industries whose production needs they can best meet with their factor endowments and institutional strengths. I estimate the model parameters using: (i) OLS; and (ii) a simulated method of moments procedure that accounts for the prevalence of zeros in the bilateral trade data. I apply the model to explore various quantitative questions, such …

Revenue Management Model For On-Demand It Services, Tieming Liu, Chinnatat Methapatara, Laura Wynter Nov 2010

Revenue Management Model For On-Demand It Services, Tieming Liu, Chinnatat Methapatara, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a model for applying revenue management to on-demand IT services. The multinomial logit model is used to describe customer choice over multiple classes with different service-level agreements (SLAs). A nonlinear programming model is provided to determine the optimal price or service level for each class. Through a numerical analysis, we examine the impacts of system capacity and customer waiting incentives on the service provider’s profit and pricing strategies.

Evolution Of A Bluetooth Test Application Product Line: A Case Study, Narayanasamy Ramasubbu, Rajesh Krishna Balan Nov 2010

Evolution Of A Bluetooth Test Application Product Line: A Case Study, Narayanasamy Ramasubbu, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study the decision making process involved in the five year lifecycle of a Bluetooth software product produced by a large, multi-national test and measurement firm. In this environment, customer change requests either have to be added as a standard feature in the product, or developed as a special customized version of the product. We first discuss the influential factors, such as evolving standards, market share, installed-base, and complexity, which collectively determined how the firm responded to product change requests. We then develop a predictive decision model to test the collective impact of these factors on determining …

Constitutive Discourse Of Turkish Nationalism: Atatürk’S Nutuk And The Rhetorical Construction Of The “Turkish People”, Aysel Morin, Ronald Lee Nov 2010

Constitutive Discourse Of Turkish Nationalism: Atatürk’S Nutuk And The Rhetorical Construction Of The “Turkish People”, Aysel Morin, Ronald Lee

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This article explores the “Great Speech” Nutuk, delivered in 1927 by Turkey’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. In analyzing Nutuk and its rhetorical features, we identify the mythic underpinnings Atatürk employed to construct a modern “Turkish people.” We use this case to further our understanding of the constitutive discourses of nationalism. We believe Atatürk’s Nutuk provides a profitable discourse to think with as we attempt to understand Muslim nations and their negotiation of modernity.

7th–12th Grade English/Language Arts Teachers And Their Classroom Grading Practices: Investigating The Use Of Standards-Based Grading In Nebraska’S Rural Classrooms, Summer E. Stephens

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A problem exists in grading practices accurately measuring student achievement. Both students’ academic achievements and nonacademic factors, such as effort, homework completion, and behaviors continue to factor into grades. This combination can lead to inaccurate representation of true academic ability, rendering a grade useless. While assessment and grading practices continue to be a conversation in most education circles, the implementation of standards-based grading practices in high school English/Language Arts classrooms varies widely. Past studies have shown that grades have provided feedback and been used to motivate and rank students. Future research was needed to address the following research question: How …

A Thermal Simulation Process Based On Electrical Modeling For Complex Interconnect, Packaging, And 3di Structures, Lijun Jiang, Chuan Xu, Barry J. Rubin, Alan J. Weger, Alina Deutsch, Howard Smith, Alain Caron, Kaustav Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To reduce the product development time and achieve first-pass silicon success, fast and accurate estimation of very-large-scale integration (VLSI) interconnect, packaging and 3DI (3D integrated circuits) thermal profiles has become important. Present commercial thermal analysis tools are incapable of handling very complex structures and have integration difficulties with existing design flows. Many analytical thermal models, which could provide fast estimates, are either too specific or oversimplified. This paper highlights a methodology, which exploits electrical resistance solvers for thermal simulation, to allow acquisition of thermal profiles of complex structures with good accuracy and reasonable computation cost. Moreover, a novel accurate closed-form …

From Then Until Now, Nick Marshall

Theses

The photograph may create a sense of nostalgia and longing for the past, but that past is not an authentic one. It is a past that has been mediated through a lens and by a photographer who is already mediated by cultural and societal norms and beliefs. Yet this past is both familiar and foreign at the same time. From Then Until Now is a series of visual investigations and physical manipulations of the photograph--particularly the snapshot. I utilize the photograph for its dual role as an objective index and as an aid for the subjective nature of memories. In …

A Novel Real-Time Approach To Unified Power Flow Controller Validation, Keyou Wang, Mariesa Crow, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Stan Atcitty

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the development of a real-time hardware/software laboratory to interface a soft real-time power system simulator with multiple unified power flow controllers (UPFC) via hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) to study their dynamic responses and validate control and placement approaches. This paper describes a unique laboratory facility that enables large-scale, soft real-time power system simulation coupled with the true physical behavior of a UPFC as opposed to the controller response captured by many other real-time simulators. The HIL line includes a synchronous machine, a UPFC, and a programmable load to reproduce the physical dynamics of the UPFC sub-network.
