A Comparison Of Computer-Assisted And Peer-Partner Practice In Treble-Staff Note Recognition, Pammala K. Goodenough

Masters Theses

This study compared the effectiveness of computer-assisted practice and peer-partner practice in treble-staff note recognition. Six 3rd-grade classes participated in 3 sessions, each including a 2-minute pre-test, a lesson on treble staff notes, a 10-minute practice drill, and a 2-minute post-test. During practice, half the students used the online Note Trainer from Ricci Adams ' Musictheory. net to practice identifying notes, while the other half practiced with a partner using flashcards of the notes of the treble staff. Results showed the computer students averaged over twice as many correct answers as the peer practice group at the end of the …

In the analysis, I examine form, programmatic elements, harmonic structure, melodic structure, and rhythm and meter. In the form analysis, I show leitmotifs I created to represent characters and places, discuss motives and figures, and illustrate the form of the piece in graphs. To examine the programmatic aspects of the composition, I discuss the function of each leitmotif. Techniques such as thematic …

Keeping Myself Morally Straight: A Rhetorical Critique Of The Boy Scouts Of America, Zachary Matthew Thuring Jan 2010

Keeping Myself Morally Straight: A Rhetorical Critique Of The Boy Scouts Of America, Zachary Matthew Thuring

Masters Theses

The centennial anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) marks the perfect opportunity to critique the rhetoric of an organization that has influenced millions of young boys across America. Over the last 100 years, the Boy Scouts have remained a solid pillar and exemplar of a certain set of dominant Western values and ideologies, primarily those associated with hegemonic masculinity. Through a critique of the rhetoric of this organization, we can see the various constructions of the dominant ideologies as well as various manifestations of subversions and transgressions from the dominant ideology. With this thesis, I explore the impossible …

A Teller Of Tales: Narratology And The Works Of Sherwood Anderson, Jamie Patton Jan 2010

A Teller Of Tales: Narratology And The Works Of Sherwood Anderson, Jamie Patton

Masters Theses

The publication of Winesburg, Ohio in 1919 introduced Sherwood Anderson as an American author with great potential, but when critics attempted to evaluate Anderson's legacy following his death in 1941, most concluded that his career beyond that book and a few short stories failed to deliver on that promise to permanently establish Anderson as a writer with a lasting impact. However, Anderson's direct influence on key players of the modernist period, most notably Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner, suggests the need for scholars to take a closer look at his work in order to better understand his impact and the …

Marketing Campaign For Soup Stop, Nfp, Inc., Chelsea M. Mcbride Jan 2010

Marketing Campaign For Soup Stop, Nfp, Inc., Chelsea M. Mcbride

Masters Theses

For the applied thesis in professional communication, I created marketing documents for Soup Stop, NFP, INC., a non-profit organization located in Charleston that provides free lunch Monday through Friday to anyone who asks for a meal. Soup Stop does not require its clients to provide any information in order to receive service. It is one of Charleston's longest running mission projects and has operated out of the First Presbyterian Church for ten years, serving over 30,000 meals. Because Soup Stop is funded entirely through donations and volunteer efforts, board members have found it challenging to keep documents up-to-date and to …

Cross-Age And Peer Tutoring In The Music Classroom, Christopher B. Gelb Jan 2010

Cross-Age And Peer Tutoring In The Music Classroom, Christopher B. Gelb

Masters Theses

This is a study on the effects of a Cross-age Tutoring program implemented into a beginning band classroom. High school students worked with small groups of beginning band students. The tutoring sessions were 45-minute sessions on an every-other-day rotation. Supervising teachers provided articles and demonstrations to assist the high school-aged tutors in working with different techniques unique to each instrument. Resources for the tutoring sessions included the Essential Elements 2000 band method book and the Music Ace computer program. The high school and middle school band directors supervised the tutoring sessions and were available to answer questions and develop lesson …

Learning New Words Affects Nonword Pronunciation In Children, Maya Khanna, Michael J. Cortese, Katharine Birchwood Jan 2010

Learning New Words Affects Nonword Pronunciation In Children, Maya Khanna, Michael J. Cortese, Katharine Birchwood

Psychology Faculty Publications

In two experiments we examined how children’s nonword pronunciations are influenced by learning words. In Experiment 1, children pronounced nonwords before and after learning words sharing orthographic rimes with the nonwords. These rimes varied in spelling-to-sound consistency and regularity. Children’s nonword pronunciations were more sensitive to consistency and regularity after instruction than before. Experiment 2 expanded upon Experiment 1 by modifying the instruction to highlight regularity and consistency in rime unit neighborhoods and by including both younger (M age = 7.6) and older (M age = 9.92) participants. After instruction, Experiment 2 participants demonstrated greater sensitivity to rime unit consistency …

The Eligibility Practices For The Category Of Specific Learning Disability In A Rural Special Education Cooperative In Illinois, Jennifer L. Hauptly Jan 2010

The Eligibility Practices For The Category Of Specific Learning Disability In A Rural Special Education Cooperative In Illinois, Jennifer L. Hauptly

Masters Theses

This study investigated the trends in assessment for specific learning disability in a rural special education cooperative in Illinois. The sample included assessment records for 135 students who graduated from high school with special education services under the category of specific learning disability. The assessment procedures were recorded and compared to trends in practice at the time. Results revealed that the use of traditional assessment practices, such as the IQ-achievement discrepancy, was less likely to be used once the alternative Flexible Service Delivery Model was initiated. To further investigate the impact of the Flexible Service Delivery Model, data were gathered …
