Hydrologic Controls On Salinity In Mangroves And Lagoons, Christina Elaine Stringer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the hydrologic controls on salinity within mangroves and lagoons at sites in Florida and Mexico. The main objective of this research is to better understand hydrologic controls on mangrove ecosystem structure and develop ideas that will be useful to land managers attempting to regulate and conserve these critical habitats. This study was conducted at sites in Ft. Pierce, FL and Costalegre on the central Pacific coast of Mexico.

We examined controls on water levels and salinity in a mangrove on a carbonate barrier island along the Indian River Lagoon, east-central Florida. Spectral analysis of water levels showed …

Evaluation Of Deep Geologic Units In Florida For Potential Use In Carbon Dioxide Sequestration, Tina Roberts-Ashby Nov 2010

Evaluation Of Deep Geologic Units In Florida For Potential Use In Carbon Dioxide Sequestration, Tina Roberts-Ashby

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Concerns about elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO

2

) and the effect on

global climate have created proposals for the reduction of carbon emissions from large

stationary sources, such as power plants. Carbon dioxide capture and sequestration

(CCS) in deep geologic units is being considered by Florida electric-utilities. Carbon

dioxide-enhanced oil recovery (CO

2

-EOR) is a form of CCS that could offset some of the

costs associated with geologic sequestration. Two potential reservoirs for geologic

sequestration were evaluated in south-central and southern Florida: the Paleocene

Cedar Keys Formation/Upper Cretaceous Lawson Formation (CKLIZ) and the Lower

Cretaceous Sunniland Formation along …

Selected Students’, Parents’, And Graduate Student Tutors’ Experiences And Perceptions In A Community Of Interest Summer Literacy Camp, Kim G. Thomas Nov 2010

Selected Students’, Parents’, And Graduate Student Tutors’ Experiences And Perceptions In A Community Of Interest Summer Literacy Camp, Kim G. Thomas

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this qualitative case study, I examined a local summer literacy camp in which

graduate student tutors tutored elementary and middle school students in reading and

writing. I focused the study on the primary stakeholders in the summer literacy camp:

ts, and the course instructor/camp director because

their voices are limited in the current literature. In this Community of Interest Summer

Literacy Camp, the graduate student tutors moved from a position of fear and trepidation

to a position of empowerment in which they hoped to make changes in their classrooms,

schools, and communities. The tutees learned to appreciate the …

The Anchor, Volume 124.09: November 10, 2010, Hope College

The Anchor: 2010

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Conversion Of Low-Grade Heat Into Power Using Supercritical Rankine Cycles, Huijuan Chen Nov 2010

The Conversion Of Low-Grade Heat Into Power Using Supercritical Rankine Cycles, Huijuan Chen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Low-grade heat sources, here defined as below 300 ºC, are abundantly available as industrial waste heat, solar thermal, and geothermal, to name a few. However, they are under-exploited for conversion to power because of the low efficiency of conversion. The utilization of low-grade heat is advantageous for many reasons. Technologies that allow the efficient conversion of low-grade heat into mechanical or electrical power are very important to develop.

This work investigates the potential of supercritical Rankine cycles in the conversion of low-grade heat into power. The performance of supercritical Rankine cycles is studied using ChemCAD linked with customized excel macros …

Inactivation Of Ascaris Suum By Ammonia In Feces Simulating The Physical-Chemical Parameters Of The Solar Toilet Under Laboratory Conditions, Ligia Maria Cruz Espinoza Nov 2010

Inactivation Of Ascaris Suum By Ammonia In Feces Simulating The Physical-Chemical Parameters Of The Solar Toilet Under Laboratory Conditions, Ligia Maria Cruz Espinoza

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Access to sustainable sanitation systems is a determining factor in human health and economic development. However, more than a third of the world’s population lives without access to improved sanitation facilities. To meet the sanitation United Nations Millennium Development target, "halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation", a wide range of non conventional sanitation technologies have been implemented in developing countries, including waterless systems. These systems function by diverting urine away from feces and collecting, storing, and dehydrating the fecal material in watertight dehydration vaults. From a public …

Libs And Lite Emission Based Laser Remote Sensing Of Chemical Species And Enhanced Modeling Of Atmospheric Absorption, Dzianis V. Pliutau Nov 2010

Libs And Lite Emission Based Laser Remote Sensing Of Chemical Species And Enhanced Modeling Of Atmospheric Absorption, Dzianis V. Pliutau

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Laser-Induced Breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Laser-Induced Thermal Emission (LITE) emission based laser remote sensing were investigated with the application to the remote measurements of trace chemical species. In particular, UVvisible LIBS and Mid-IR LITE systems were developed and measurements of remote targets and chemical surfaces were studied. The propagation through the atmosphere of the multi-wavelength backscattered LIBS and LITE optical spectrum with atmospheric absorption effects on the returned lidar signal was investigated. An enhanced model of the atmospheric effects on emission-based laser-remote sensing was developed and found to be consistent and in agreement with our experimental results.

LITE measurements were …

Novel Roles For 185delag Mutant Brca1 In Ovarian Cancer Pathology, Rebecca J. Linger Nov 2010

Novel Roles For 185delag Mutant Brca1 In Ovarian Cancer Pathology, Rebecca J. Linger

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Familial history is the strongest risk factor for developing ovarian cancer (OC), and a significant contributor to breast cancer risk. Most hereditary breast cancers and OCs are associated with mutation of the tumor suppressor Breast and Ovarian Cancer Susceptibility Gene 1 (BRCA1). Studying risk-associated BRCA1 truncation mutations, such as the founder mutation 185delAG, may reveal signaling pathways important in OC etiology. Recent studies have shown novel BRCA1 mutant functions that may contribute to breast and OC initiation and progression independent of the loss of wtBRCA1. Previously, we have found that normal human ovarian surface epithelial (HOSE) cells expressing the 185delAG …

Pemex Cries Poverty, Analysts Beg To Differ, David Agren Nov 2010

Pemex Cries Poverty, Analysts Beg To Differ, David Agren

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

When Finance Secretary Ernesto Cordero delivered his 2011 budget to Congress in early September, complaints surfaced almost immediately in the state oil company PEMEX about the size of next years proposed US$20.4 billion allocation--some 30% less than requested. The concerns once again highlighted perpetual challenges in PEMEX's finances as the federal government relies on oil revenue to fund roughly one-third of its budget, which insiders say puts the company at risk of losing money and going into debt and not carrying out new projects to stem a decline in its petroleum reserves. The concerns also highlighted the challenges PEMEX faces as …

The Lexicon Of Calunga And A Lexical Comparison With Other Forms Of Afro-Brazilian Speech From Minas Gerais, São Paulo, And Bahia, Steven Byrd Nov 2010

The Lexicon Of Calunga And A Lexical Comparison With Other Forms Of Afro-Brazilian Speech From Minas Gerais, São Paulo, And Bahia, Steven Byrd

Research Papers

Recent scholarship by Bonvini (2008a:54, 2008b:101) estimates that there are perhaps 4,000 words from African languages attested in Brazilian Portuguese. In his analysis, these Africanisms originated from code-switching speakers of various African languages and Portuguese within Brazil (Bonvini 2008b:117). However, in spite of the formerly wide distribution of African languages in Brazil, only little is known about them. In the words of Bonvini and Petter (1998:74): What do we really know about the African languages spoken in Brazil? Unfortunately, the answer to this question is close to nothing (Bonvini 2008a:21; Castro 2001:71).

A Deleuzian Approach To Carlos Reygadass Stellet Licht [Silent Light] (2008), Cynthia Tompkinis

Research Papers

This article opens with a brief summary of the Mexican cinematic tradition, followed by references to Carlos Reygadass preference for auteur cinema and to the common denominator of his films, the topic of taboo. After contextualizing Mennonite presence in Mexico, this text focuses on the process of adaptation of Kaj Munk's play Ordet (1932), which spawned several avatars, among them Carl Theodor Dreyer's homonymous film, Ordet (1954), and Reygadas's Stellet Licht [Silent Light] (2008). Special consideration is given to Dreyer's influence on the Mexican director, that is, on minimalism in terms of mise-en-scène, character and camera movement. An exploration of …

Argentina Promises Nuclear Power Surge, Benjamin Witte-Lebhar Nov 2010

Argentina Promises Nuclear Power Surge, Benjamin Witte-Lebhar

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

Left for decades on the proverbial back burner, Argentinas once cutting-edge but now very much dusty nuclear power sector is experiencing a real renaissance. For the first time in more than a quarter century, the country is preparing to open a new nuclear power plant, its third. More may be on the way as Argentina looks to ease its dependence on fossil fuels, particularly natural gas. Then a regional pioneer, Argentina opened South America's first nuclear power plant in 1974: the 335 megawatt Atucha I facility. Approximately 115 km northwest of Buenos Aires in the town of Lima, Atucha I …
