How Advanced Are Smart Grids In Latin America?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

U.S. President Barack Obama last year announced the largest single energy grid modernization investment in the country's history, valued at some $8 billion. Other nations have similarly prioritized large-scale investments to modernize energy infrastructure by incorporating information and communication technologies to create a ""smart grid"" that uses two-way communications to better coordinate supply and demand, reduce costs and enhance efficiency. How advanced is the build-out of smart grids in Latin America and the Caribbean? What challenges do smart grids face in the region and how do they factor into the overall context of the energy sector? How will regional integration …

Argentina Promises Nuclear Power Surge, Benjamin Witte-Lebhar Nov 2010

Argentina Promises Nuclear Power Surge, Benjamin Witte-Lebhar

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

Left for decades on the proverbial back burner, Argentinas once cutting-edge but now very much dusty nuclear power sector is experiencing a real renaissance. For the first time in more than a quarter century, the country is preparing to open a new nuclear power plant, its third : Atucha II. More may be on the way as Argentina looks to ease its dependence on fossil fuels, particularly natural gas. Then a regional pioneer, Argentina opened South America's first nuclear power plant in 1974: the 335 megawatt Atucha I facility. Approximately 115 km northwest of Buenos Aires in the town of …

Core-Stable Rings In Second Price Auctions With Common Values, Françoise Forges, Ram Orzach Nov 2010

Core-Stable Rings In Second Price Auctions With Common Values, Françoise Forges, Ram Orzach

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In a common value auction in which the information partitions of the bidders are connected, all rings are core-stable. More precisely, the ex ante expected utilities of rings, at the (noncooperative) sophisticated equilibrium proposed by Einy, Haimanko, Orzach and Sela (Journal of Mathematical Economics, 2002), describe a cooperative game, in characteristic function form, in spite of the underlying strategic externalities. A ring is core-stable if the core of this characteristic function is not empty. Furthermore, every ring can implement its sophisticated equilibrium strategy by means of an incentive compatible mechanism.

Parental Involvement And Academic Achievement Among Children Of Immigrants, Wade Clinton Jacobsen Nov 2010

Parental Involvement And Academic Achievement Among Children Of Immigrants, Wade Clinton Jacobsen

Theses and Dissertations

Using Bourdieu's model of social and cultural reproduction, I examine student achievement and parental involvement levels across seven immigrant nationalities: Cambodian, Cuban, Filipino, Laotian, Mexican, Nicaraguan, and Vietnamese. I then analyze the relationships between five parental involvement types and GPA, while controlling for student, family, and school characteristics. Finally, I test for interaction effects to examine variations across groups. Results point to parent expectations as a strong predictor of student success, especially among Cubans, Filipinos, and Vietnamese, while other dimensions of parental involvement have little or no effect. Bourdieu's model may not be adequate among immigrant parents and their children …

Proteoliposome Proton Flux Assays Establish Net Conductance, Ph-Sensitivity, And Functional Integrity Of A Novel Truncate Of The M2 Ion "Channel" Of Influenza A, Emily Peterson Nov 2010

Proteoliposome Proton Flux Assays Establish Net Conductance, Ph-Sensitivity, And Functional Integrity Of A Novel Truncate Of The M2 Ion "Channel" Of Influenza A, Emily Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

A novel truncate of Influenza A M2 protein (residues 22-62), incorporated into a uniquely tailored proteoliposome proton uptake assay, demonstrated proton flux more characteristic of an ion transporter than a traditional ion "channel." The liposome paradigm was essential for testing the conductance activity of this M2 truncate at a range of extraphysiological pHs appropriate for channel vs. transport function determination. In addition to transporter-typical proton flux, M2(22-62) showed the key characteristics of functional integrity: selective proton uptake into liposomes and block of uptake by amantadine. Two sets of proteoliposome proton flux assays were carried out, Set 1 at pH values …

Understanding The Economics Of Transportation In Utah, Jeremy E. Searle Nov 2010

Understanding The Economics Of Transportation In Utah, Jeremy E. Searle

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the economic impacts of transportation projects in Utah is essential for decision makers, officials, and stakeholders as they determine the best course of action for the state. Economic impacts can guide decisions of future projects and help explain past economic fluctuations. This study develops a process that can be used to identify the economic impacts of transportation projects in Utah and quantify the relationship between transportation and these impacts. Accomplishing the objectives of this study are a product of: 1) performing a comprehensive literature review, 2) collecting data and establishing analysis methods, 3) completing a statistical analysis and breakdown …
