Holiday Home, Sweet Home: A Phenomenological Approach To Second Home Living In Ireland, Deirdre N. Quinn Apr 2010

Holiday Home, Sweet Home: A Phenomenological Approach To Second Home Living In Ireland, Deirdre N. Quinn

Doctoral

This study constructs a phenomenological account of the second home living experience in Ireland, exploring the interactions between the everyday home life and the holiday home life of the second home owner. It is contextualized by a critical review of the relevant literatures on post-modernism, cosmopolitanism, home and second home living. The thesis utilises a package of participant-centred qualitative methodologies (including in-depth interviews, audio diaries and participants’ photographs) in order to produce a fine-grained insight into their experiences of second home living.

The fieldwork consists of two phases, the first based on in-depth interviews with second home owners and the …

A Planet By Any Other Name…, Kimberly Kessler Ferzan Apr 2010

A Planet By Any Other Name…, Kimberly Kessler Ferzan

Michigan Law Review

In case you haven't heard, Pluto isn't a planet anymore (and maybe it never was). In grade school, we all memorized the planets, giving little thought to what made something a planet besides revolving around the Sun and being part of some familiar mnemonic. However, scientific discoveries about Pluto and other parts of space led scientists to question Pluto's planetary status and ultimately, to strip Pluto of its standing among the planets. This leads to the inevitable question-what is a planet?-which turns out to be a more difficult and fascinating question than one might think. The Pluto Files grapples with …

Cellular Immunity In Mouse Models Of Viral Encephalitis, Christina Dawn Steel Apr 2010

Cellular Immunity In Mouse Models Of Viral Encephalitis, Christina Dawn Steel

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Evidence is presented herein that intranasal application of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) caused acute infection of the murine central nervous system (CNS) with associated morbidity and significant mortality in mice. However, VSV encephalitis was not invariably fatal, suggesting that the CNS contained a professional antigen-presenting cell (APC) capable of inducing or propagating a protective antiviral immune response. To examine this possibility, we administered VSV via the intranasal route and then characterized the cellular elements that infiltrate the brain as well as the activation status of resident microglia, cells widely believed to represent the major APC population in the CNS. To …

Getting To Best Practices - A Personal Voyage Around Fair Use, Peter Jaszi Apr 2010

Getting To Best Practices - A Personal Voyage Around Fair Use, Peter Jaszi

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

These days, I view fair use as a central feature of the law around our information ecology - its presence reminding us, from day to day, that there is more to copyright than maximization, and that innovation happens when the doctrinal settings are loose enough to permit a good deal of "play" (literally and figuratively) in the system. But before the mid-1990s I thought little about the fair use doctrine and did less. As I suspect may be true of other copyright lawyers of my generation (and the ones preceding it, I spent most of my professional career taking fair …

Dr. Barbara McClanahan: The purpose of this study was to examine how body esteem affects a child’s relative BMI. In a current childhood obesity prevention study, the Revised Body Esteem Scale (BES) data for 223 at risk for overweight/overweight children between the ages of 4-7 was analyzed. The scores range from 0-60, with higher scores being associated with higher body esteem. Additional covariates examined in relationship to the children’s BES included age, gender, race, parental BMI, …

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Potential Role In The Management Of Early Alzheimer's Disease, Gregory A. Jicha, William R. Markesbery Mar 2010

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Potential Role In The Management Of Early Alzheimer's Disease, Gregory A. Jicha, William R. Markesbery

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain growth and development. They play an important role throughout life, as critical modulators of neuronal function and regulation of oxidative stress mechanisms, in brain health and disease. Docosahexanoic acid (DHA), the major omega-3 fatty acid found in neurons, has taken on a central role as a target for therapeutic intervention in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A plethora of in vitro, animal model, and human data, gathered over the past decade, highlight the important role DHA may play in the development of a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders, including AD. Cross sectional and prospective …

Imagined Realities, Defying Subjects: Voice, Sexuality And Subversion In African Women's Writing, Sarah Namulondo Mar 2010

Imagined Realities, Defying Subjects: Voice, Sexuality And Subversion In African Women's Writing, Sarah Namulondo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The privileging of man in African societies has involved an erasure of identities and subjectivities of many women, holding them to an assumption of female inferiority. To counter the injustice, African women writers have engaged in rhetorical and performative strategies designed to reconstitute the cultural erasure as they try to claim status as individuals. But in the process, various cultural expectations such as their maternal roles act as constant bottlenecks to return them back to their prescribed roles as subordinate beings. This dissertation, “Imagined Realities, Defying Subjects: Voice, Sexuality and Subversion in African Women’s Writing” explores the methodologies of cultural …

"Make A Joyful Noise Unto The Lord": Brass Bands And Cultural Identity In Tonga's Christian Kingdom, David Kammerer Mar 2010

"Make A Joyful Noise Unto The Lord": Brass Bands And Cultural Identity In Tonga's Christian Kingdom, David Kammerer

Mormon Pacific Historical Society

This dissertation considers music's role in constructing collective identity and generating social meaning, with the aim of yielding new insights into the workings of indigenous agency in cross-cultural encounters. In the Pacific nation of Tonga a unique set of socio-cultural forces has shaped a distinctive contemporary identity. Tonga's government comprises the only monarchy in the contemporary Pacific and represents the only Polynesian group that was not colonized in the political sense. Although Western ideas permeated Tongan culture over the past two centuries, these transformations occurred largely as a result of Tongan choices. The introduction of Christianity in the nineteenth century …

The Absurd In The Briar Patch: Ellison's Invisible Man And Existentialism, Eliot J. Wilcox Mar 2010

The Absurd In The Briar Patch: Ellison's Invisible Man And Existentialism, Eliot J. Wilcox

Theses and Dissertations

This article claims that Ralph Ellison's use and then revision of French existential themes is essential to understanding his overriding message of Invisible Man: Ellison's hope for a more polyglot American democracy that transcends the white democracy of mid twentieth century America. Specifically, I argue that Ellison, after demonstrating his ability to understand and engage in the traditional ideology of European existentialism, deviates from its individualistic conclusions demanding that the larger community, not just the solitary individual, must become ethically responsible if the classic existential tenet of authenticity is to be achieved. In order to establish this claim, I …

Proposing A Purpose: Rhetorical Paideia Goals For First Year Composition, Lauren Everett Johnson Mar 2010

Proposing A Purpose: Rhetorical Paideia Goals For First Year Composition, Lauren Everett Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

First Year Composition (FYC) instructors are often left to puzzle out the larger meaning of the most ubiquitous course in our field for themselves; consequently, goals for the course are frequently selected by the instructor, and are not always most effective for laying a groundwork of lifelong learning and education, or paideia. This lack of clear and unifying goals for the course is illustrated by a piece of 2005 scholarship that points to multiple focuses for FYC, each different in its values and aims. FYC is an important course for students, not only because it is one of only …

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Biomass-Kinetic Model For Chlorella Vulgaris In A Biofuel Production Scheme, William M. Rowley Mar 2010

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Biomass-Kinetic Model For Chlorella Vulgaris In A Biofuel Production Scheme, William M. Rowley

Theses and Dissertations

Chlorella vulgaris was cultured in microbioreactors using Bold’s Basal medium at varying nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations to define nitrogen and phosphorus utilization standards. Nutrient concentration was varied between 137 mg/L to 7.33 mg/L NO3-N and between 55.2 mg/L to11.0 mg/L PO4-P in five test scenarios. All were grown under a constant photoperiod at 22±2 °C and a mixture of 4 to 10% carbon dioxide/air. Maximum yield and growth rate occurred with the highest initial nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. A statistically significant difference in biomass was found among all test levels at the end of the eight day growth period. Applying …

The Relationship Of Wine Prices And The Qualitative Aesthetics Of Wine Labels, Danielle Drews Mar 2010

The Relationship Of Wine Prices And The Qualitative Aesthetics Of Wine Labels, Danielle Drews

Agribusiness

This study was undertaken to determine the relationship between price and various wine label design elements. These variables included golden mean, uniform font, proportion of yellow and orange, direction, realistic, abstract, winery/grape image, winery emblem, font type changes, font size changes, horizontal label, vertical label, Sonoma, and Napa. The researcher wanted to determine whether specific combinations of color and images on wine labels reflect greater aesthetic content and relate to their recommended price. Fifty wine labels were randomly selected from a given sample and several researchers evaluated each label looking specifically at the design elements listed above. A regression analysis …

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) based on the Competing Values Framework (CVF). More specially, cultural equivalence between the Korean version and the original English version of the OCAI was evaluated using 39 bilingual Koreans. Next, a field test was conducted to examine scale reliability and construct validity of the Korean version of the OCAI using 133 organizational members from the Korean Professional Baseball League (KPBL). The findings indicate that the Korean version was successfully translated, items maintained the same meaning of the original …

Fictions Of Life And Death: Tomb Automata In Medieval Romance, Elly R. Truitt Mar 2010

Fictions Of Life And Death: Tomb Automata In Medieval Romance, Elly R. Truitt

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

While automata appear in medieval European textual sources in many different settings, they frequently cluster around tombs, memorials and other places associated with the dead. In several different literary examples, automata expose the unstable definitions of ‘life’ and ‘death’ and reveal contemporary ideas about the complexity and permeability of these categories.

Maternal Consumption Of Canola Oil Suppressed Mammary Gland Tumorigenesis In C3(1) Tag Mice Offspring, Gabriela Ion, Juliana A. Akinsete, W. Elaine Hardman Mar 2010

Maternal Consumption Of Canola Oil Suppressed Mammary Gland Tumorigenesis In C3(1) Tag Mice Offspring, Gabriela Ion, Juliana A. Akinsete, W. Elaine Hardman

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Background: Maternal consumption of a diet high in omega 6 polyunsaturated fats (n-6 PUFA) has been shown to increase risk whereas a diet high in omega 3 polyunsaturated fats (n-3 PUFA) from fish oil has been shown to decrease risk for mammary gland cancer in female offspring of rats. The aim of this study was to determine whether increasing n-3 PUFA and reducing n-6 PUFA by using canola oil instead of corn oil in the maternal diet might reduce the risk for breast cancer in female offspring.

Methods: Female SV 129 mice were divided into two groups and placed on …

Understanding The Recurrent Crisis In Legal Romanticism: Two Criteria For Coherent Doubt, Chris Sagers Mar 2010

Understanding The Recurrent Crisis In Legal Romanticism: Two Criteria For Coherent Doubt, Chris Sagers

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Broadly skeptical or relativistic criticisms of law and legal discourse, of the kind prevalent in the last generation in American legal scholarship, pose an inherent logic problem: they tend to impugn normativity itself just as much as they do their intended target. What seems amiss is that the act of critique is itself normative. However it is stated, and notwithstanding efforts by the critic to say otherwise, it is hard to see how the normativity implied in the very act of critique—indeed, in the very act of having purposes at all—is not at odds with the criticism itself.

As an …

Student-Centered Instruction: Linking Career Goals And Instruction, Rosalie Cheatham Mar 2010

Student-Centered Instruction: Linking Career Goals And Instruction, Rosalie Cheatham

Dimensions

In 2002 French faculty at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock began the process of curricular revision to prepare for the challenges of a standards-based French major. After five years of experience and positive evaluations from students, faculty are gratified that the number of graduates in French has increased. However, new challenges have emerged recently. Institutional pressure to graduate a larger number of majors, professional expectations that graduates have acquired a higher level of proficiency than was previously expected, and a significant change in student access to and usage of technology for communication have demanded attention and offered new …

Feminist Criticism: The Importance Of Sharing The Native Female Journey, Michelle Newfield Mar 2010

Feminist Criticism: The Importance Of Sharing The Native Female Journey, Michelle Newfield

Communication Studies

The female Native American perspective is grossly neglected in mainstream media. Sadly, stereotypical images romanticize Native American women in a light that disallows them to be taken seriously in a modernized world. The fact is that the majority of women with American Indian ancestry do not live on reservations; they make up a considerable part of the general population.

There is an unfortunate “invisibility of Native women in comparison to men,” and “Native women are often represented by popular culture within the Plains Indian context, the generic Indian. Omnipresent is the ‘squaw’ who is portrayed as servant, concubine, beast of …
