Evaluation Of A French 202 Website Used In A Traditional Face-To-Face Environment, Diego Gonzalo Flores
Evaluation Of A French 202 Website Used In A Traditional Face-To-Face Environment, Diego Gonzalo Flores
Theses and Dissertations
The Center for Teaching and Learning, Independent Study, and the Department of French and Italian at Brigham Young University collaborated to develop the French 202 Website to be used with the French 202 course. Currently, the French 202 Website is used with the French 202 Independent Study course and with the traditional face-to-face course. This evaluation focused on the French 202 Website as it is used with the traditional face-to-face course. This evaluation was conducted in conjunction with the Center for Teaching and Learning at Brigham Young University (BYU). Based on the information collected, the evaluator found that (a) faculty …

Preventing Computer Identity Theft, Donald R. Mcdaniel
Preventing Computer Identity Theft, Donald R. Mcdaniel
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The arrival of the information age has created new challenges to the ability of individuals to protect the security and privacy of their personal information. One such challenge is that of identity theft, which has caused a number of hardships upon its victims. Perpetrators of this fraud may use identities of others to obtain loans, steal money, and violate the law. This paper will discuss the characteristics of the offenders and victims of identity theft. A systematic approach for preventing identity theft will also be presented with the hopes of curtailing this epidemic.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse
I would like to focus my remarks this morning by drawing upon the research that shows how organizations have led change and renewal through innovation and creativity. I believe that the topic “Intrapreneurship”, i.e. entrepreneurial behavior within an organization is quite distinct and vast and requires separate discussion and discourse. I would therefore draw upon liberally from the seminal work of Michael Tushman of Columbia Graduate Business School and Charles O’Reilly on how innovation and creativity have found their way into mid to large Corporations. The biggest challenge facing the well established and well entrenched Corporations is: How can they …

Sources Of The Radio Background Considered, Jack Singal, L. Stawarz, A. Lawrence, V. Petrosian
Physics Faculty Publications
We investigate different scenarios for the origin of the extragalactic radio background. The surface brightness of the background, as reported by the Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission 2 (ARCADE 2) collaboration, is several times higher than that which would result from currently observed radio sources. We consider contributions to the background from diffuse synchrotron emission from clusters and the intergalactic medium, previously unrecognized flux from low-surface-brightness regions of radio sources and faint point sources below the flux limit of existing surveys. By examining radio source counts available in the literature, we conclude that most of the radio …

Conference Papers
We demonstrate holographic recording with Si-MFI zeolite doped acrylamide based photopolymerfilm. The influence of silicate nanoparticles on photopolymer shrinkage has been studied and compared withshrinkage in undoped photopolymer layers The shrinkage of the material (1.03%) is significantly lower forrecording in Si-MFI zeolite nanoparticle doped samples than for undoped layers (1.77%).

We report radial velocity (RV) measurements of the G-type subgiants 24 Sextanis (= HD 90043) and HD 200964. Both are massive, evolved stars that exhibit periodic variations due to the presence of a pair of Jovian planets. Photometric monitoring with the T12 0.80 m APT at Fairborn Observatory demonstrates both stars to be constant in brightness to ⩽0.002 mag, thus strengthening the planetary interpretation of the RV variations. Based on our dynamical analysis of the RV time series, 24 Sex b, c have orbital periods of 452.8 days and 883.0 days, corresponding to semimajor axes 1.333 AU and 2.08 AU, …

Shrouded In Stigma: A Heuristic Study Of Living With Hiv, Neal Stacy Rosenburg
Shrouded In Stigma: A Heuristic Study Of Living With Hiv, Neal Stacy Rosenburg
Dissertations
HIV-related stigma is a serious hindrance to addressing the recruitment, maintenance, and follow-up nursing care of HIV-infected persons. This study was anchored within the heuristic research model, which engaged both the researcher and participants in a dialogical and aesthetic manner to unveil the stigma of HIV. The close proximity of the researcher and study participants revealed the most visceral, emotional, and self-reflective nature of gathering data, while maintaining the integrity and rigor of a qualitative study. The purpose of this heuristic study was to examine the lived experiences of HIV-infected individuals relating to internalized stigma within an existential context. This …

Test-Driven Web Application Development: Increasing The Quality Of Web Development By Providing Framework With An Emphasis On Test-Driven Design And Development Methodologies, Jason Hall
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Web applications , especially those based on interpreted programming languages , are quickly becoming more utilized and more commonplace than traditional client applications. Despite this growth, no open solution has yet fulfilled the need of a risk-reducing development framework that supports test-driven methodologies and tools designed to coordinate the resources responsible for the most effective development of web applications based on interpreted programming languages. This research paper presents a test-driven development framework consisting of openly available components that can be used by development teams writing web applications based on interpreted programming languages based on the methodologies and tools used by …
Money Matters: The Influence Of Financial Factors On Graduate Student Persistence, Terrell L. Strayhorn
Money Matters: The Influence Of Financial Factors On Graduate Student Persistence, Terrell L. Strayhorn
Journal of Student Financial Aid
National statistics indicate that approximately 50 percent of all graduate students fail to complete their degree; thus, understanding the factors that influence their persistence is an important research objective. Using data from a nationally representative sample of bachelor's degree recipients, the study aimed to answer three questions: What proportion of 1992-1993 bachelor's degree recipients enrolled in graduate school by 2003? Of those, what proportion persisted in graduate school? Controlling for background and academic differences, what effect do financial factors have on persistence in graduate school? Descriptive and hierarchal binomial logistic regression results suest that 36 percent of bachelor's degree recipients …

Shear Stress Analysis Of Levees Subjected To Combined Surge And Wave Overtopping, Justin Michael Shaw
Shear Stress Analysis Of Levees Subjected To Combined Surge And Wave Overtopping, Justin Michael Shaw
Theses and Dissertations
Storm surge above the levee crest elevation combined with levee wave overtopping can place large shear stresses on the levee landward slope face. Previous research has examined overtopping flow conditions, but the resulting shear stress has not been thoroughly analyzed. The purpose of this thesis is to examine multiple combinations of overtopping flow conditions and the resultant shear stress along the levee’s landward slope. This thesis presents measurements of depth, velocity, discharge, and wave height, and it estimates shear stress using data collected from a scaled physical model. Shear stress is estimated using three equations including a version of Saint-Venant …

Investigations Of Factors Affecting Pine And Cottonwood Pyrolysis Oil Aging, Caitlin Durnin Naske
Investigations Of Factors Affecting Pine And Cottonwood Pyrolysis Oil Aging, Caitlin Durnin Naske
Theses and Dissertations
Studies of aging processes were conducted on pyrolysis oils produced from pine and cottonwood biomass (clear wood, whole tree, bark and needles/leaves). Accelerated aging at 80 °C for up to 504 h was employed to investigate the short and long-term effects of feedstock, phase separation, char particulates, and solvent addition on pyrolysis oil properties. Feedstock containing forestry residue was found to increase water content of neat pyrolysis oil and the collection method (total vs. fractionated) affects all of the properties with the largest impact on viscosity and as produced molecular weight. Post-condensation liquid filtration did not prevent aging-related water content …
