Provision Of Feedback During Preparation For Academic Testing: Learning Is Enhanced By Immediate But Not Delayed Feedback, Roberta E. Dihoff, Gary M. Brosvic, Michael L. Epstein, Michael J. Cook
The Psychological Record
Students prepared for classroom examinations by completing practice tests, with selected items from these practice tests repeated, in either the original or in a modified wording, on classroom examinations and a final examination. The availability of immediate self-corrective feedback on Study 1 practice tests (0, 3, or 6 practice tests) was varied, while in Study 2, the timing of feedback provided during practice tests (immediate, end of test, 24-hour delay, control) was varied . Performance on examinations was elevated by the provision of immediate feedback on practice tests in both studies, especially when test items were presented in their original …

The Palomar High-precision Astrometric Search for Exoplanet Systems monitored 51 subarcsecond binary systems to evaluate whether tertiary companions as small as Jovian planets orbited either the primary or secondary stars, perturbing their otherwise smooth Keplerian motions. Six binaries are presented that show evidence of substellar companions orbiting either the primary or secondary star. Of these six systems, the likelihoods of two of the detected perturbations to represent real objects are considered to be "high confidence," while the remaining four systems are less certain and will require continued observations for confirmation.

The Palomar High-precision Astrometric Search for Exoplanet Systems (PHASES) monitored 51 subarcsecond binary systems to determine precision binary orbits, study the geometries of triple and quadruple star systems, and discover previously unknown faint astrometric companions as small as giant planets. PHASES measurements made with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) from 2002 until PTI ceased normal operations in late 2008 are presented. Infrared differential photometry of several PHASES targets were measured with Keck Adaptive Optics and are presented.

The Palomar High-precision Astrometric Search for Exoplanet Systems (PHASES) monitored 51 subarcsecond binary systems to evaluate whether tertiary companions as small as Jovian planets orbited either the primary or secondary stars, perturbing their otherwise smooth Keplerian motions. Twenty-one of those systems were observed 10 or more times and show no evidence of additional companions. A new algorithm is presented for identifying astrometric companions and establishing the (companion mass)–(orbital period) combinations that can be excluded from existence with high confidence based on the PHASES observations, and the regions of mass–period phase space being excluded are presented for 21 PHASES binaries.

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
In order to stay competitive in today' business environment, organizations must realize data is a key asset that needs to be exploited in order to achieve success. The usual approach to this is the implementation of data warehouses and business intelligence applications. However, most data warehouses are underutilized by decision makers and knowledge workers due to their lack of technical knowledge about what the data represents and how to map it to the semantic business concepts of the enterprise. Through the integration of Information Objects with a Business Intelligence Reporting tool end-users can acquire consolidated view corporate information. Information Objects …
Implementation Of Formative Assessment Strategies Perceived By High School Students And Teachers: Professional Development Implications, Ralph Jasparro, Rosemary Burns
Implementation Of Formative Assessment Strategies Perceived By High School Students And Teachers: Professional Development Implications, Ralph Jasparro, Rosemary Burns
K-12 Education
The purpose of this study was to investigate three questions relating to formative assessment. Question 1 examined the level of implementation of formative assessment strategies among high school teachers and students. Question 2 analyzed the level of agreement between teachers and students perceptions of levels of implementation of formative assessment strategies. Finally, Question 3 investigated the relationship of the disciplines teachers taught; the amount and kinds of professional development teachers had; and district urbanicity relative to teacher levels of implementation of formative assessment strategies.
Preparing Classroom-Ready Teacher Candidates: Alignment Of University Instructional Materials With District Reading Curricula And Assessments, Maureen Mcsparran Ruby, Brandon Monroe
Preparing Classroom-Ready Teacher Candidates: Alignment Of University Instructional Materials With District Reading Curricula And Assessments, Maureen Mcsparran Ruby, Brandon Monroe
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
This study is a step toward closing the perceived gap between the preparation of elementary educators for teaching literacy and the expectations of districts. By identifying curriculum and assessments used in cooperating districts, informed faculty can incorporate specific clinical tools into teacher preparation coursework. By providing a seamless connection between the theory, pedagogy, and practice found in the university classroom and that found in elementary classrooms, candidates become more “classroom ready”. The teacher preparation will be better prepared to provide the evidence of program outcomes required by NCATE ("what candidates know and can do"). Faculty, schools, and students will have …
Ethical Dilemmas For The School Counselor: Balancing Student Confidentiality And Parents’ Right To Know, Nithya N. Iyer, Julia Baxter-Macgregor
Ethical Dilemmas For The School Counselor: Balancing Student Confidentiality And Parents’ Right To Know, Nithya N. Iyer, Julia Baxter-Macgregor
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
Professional School Counselors have a variety of roles and responsibilities to students, teachers, parents, and administrators. School counselors collaborate with both the students and other stakeholders – in this case, usually parents and teachers. Consultation and collaboration with stakeholders can be carried out through team meetings or child study teams, with all relevant parties present. Such gatherings, while beneficial to everyone involved, can potentially bring about ethical dilemmas for school counselors. This article examines the function of child study teams, the counselor’s role as consultant within the team, and what ethical issues might arise in this role. Recommendations for avoiding …

Higher Level Peer Editing: An Investigation Of The Use And Quality Of Peer Editing In An Mba Program, Joanne Crossman, Stacey L. Kite
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
This mixed methods study investigated the use of peer editing to improve writing among graduate students with a high percentage of non-native speakers of English. Following a modified version of the Van den Berg et al. (2006) Optimal Model of peer critique of university coursework, statistically significant gains were realized between the initial draft and final proposal for each of the measured items: support, audience focus, writing conventions, and organization. During the qualitative phase, students were observed to identify how peer editors engaged in discovery mode (Lockhart & Ng, 1995) interactions. The modified model and pedagogical practice proved effective for …

Developing Efficacy Beliefs In Preservice Teachers, Cheryl J. Gowie
Developing Efficacy Beliefs In Preservice Teachers, Cheryl J. Gowie
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
The development of efficacy beliefs in undergraduate preservice secondary teachers was studied over a two-year period to determine whether certain instructional practices associated with mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and emotional state support increased efficacy beliefs. Using The Teacher Efficacy Scale: Short Form (Woolfolk and Hoy, 1993), year 1 data were collected only at the conclusion an Educational Psychology course; year 2 data were collected at the beginning and end of the semester, allowing for investigation of change in beliefs. Instructional practices are examined as potential influences on the development of efficacy beliefs.

“Bio Buddies:” Peer Tutoring As An Instructional Strategy, Pat Romano, Joan Walker
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
Peer tutoring (PALS) is an instructional strategy where peers act as “instructional agents” for fellow students. In this study, 10 high school biology students participated in a ten day peer-tutoring intervention to determine whether peer tutoring would 1) facilitate student academic success, 2) enhance student focus as well as engagement in biology class, and 3) favorably affect students’ behavior in class leading to fewer off- task behavioral problems. Baseline data and post-intervention data included scores on academic tasks, student surveys, student reflection journal entries, teacher observation field notes, and behavior checklists. Student scores were higher after peer-tutoring, with the exception …
A Comparison Of Linear And Nonlinear Factor Analysis In Examining The Effect Of A Calculator Accommodation On Math Performance, Minji Kang Lee, Craig S. Wells, Stephen G. Sireci
A Comparison Of Linear And Nonlinear Factor Analysis In Examining The Effect Of A Calculator Accommodation On Math Performance, Minji Kang Lee, Craig S. Wells, Stephen G. Sireci
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
In a statewide achievement test, the use of a calculator is often allowed as an accommodation for students with disabilities (SWD). The purpose of the accommodation is to eliminate the disadvantage faced by SWDs relative to peers without disabilities with the same level of overall mathematics proficiency. However, it is important to determine if the accommodation has changed the construct and meaning of the test scores. One way of examining whether the construct has changed due to the accommodation is to compare performance on the assessment for SWDs to peers without disabilities, controlling for differences in proficiency. In this study, …
Students As The Definitive Source Of Formative Assessment: Academic Self-Assessment And The Self-Regulation Of Learning, Heidi L. Andrade
Students As The Definitive Source Of Formative Assessment: Academic Self-Assessment And The Self-Regulation Of Learning, Heidi L. Andrade
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
This paper presents a synthesis of scholarship on formative assessment, self-assessment, and self-regulated learning. It has two objectives: (1) to bridge the gap between two related but distinct areas of inquiry, (2) to illustrate how research on self-regulation can inform the study of formative assessment in general and self-assessment in particular. The paper begins by briefly reviewing and integrating the relevant literatures. It then presents a simple model, proposes general principles for supporting self-assessment and self-regulation in the classroom, and presents examples from classroom practice.
Helping Urban Teachers Help Students Read Science: A Partnership, Margaret Lally Queenan
Helping Urban Teachers Help Students Read Science: A Partnership, Margaret Lally Queenan
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
Eighty percent of fourth graders in a Northeast school had not met the
NCLB reading “goal.” Research questions asked: Will comprehension
strategies move students toward proficiency, and will a
researcher-teachers collaboration support that effort? Data included
student artifacts, student interviews, discussion transcripts, researcher
lesson plans, and field notes. Data were analyzed through coding and
constant comparison. Surveys confirmed that students learned comprehension
strategies; student writing confirmed that they learned content. However,
only 38% reached “proficiency” on standardized tests. Comprehension
strategies were necessary but not sufficient for reading. Guided reading
increased intensive instructional time but reduced time for learning
content.

Construct Invariance Of The Survey Of Knowledge Of Internet Risk And Internet Behavior Knowledge Scale, Robert K. Gable, Larry H. Ludlow, Stacey L. Kite, D. Betsy Mccoach
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
The wide use of the Internet has potential for students to become victims of Internet predators or other students who engage in inappropriate cyberbullying. Educational programming efforts targeted for students, teachers and parents need instrumentation that provides meaningful and reliable data assessing students' knowledge of Internet risk and their actual Internet behaviors. Construct invariance of the Survey of Knowledge of Internet Risk and Internet Behavior Knowledge scale regarding gender and grade level is examined for N=2621 middle school and N=1594 high school students using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis and Rasch rating scale modeling. Implications for score interpretations are discussed.

Assessment Of Students' Knowledge Of Internet Risk And Internet Behaviors: Potential Threats To Bullying And Contact By Internet Predators, Stacey L. Kite, Robert K. Gable, Lawrence Filippelli
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
Given the serious issue of bullying, this study sought to assess middle and high school students' knowledge of appropriate use and their behaviors on the Internet and social networking sites, especially regarding behaviors that may lead to cyberbullying or contact with potential Internet predators. Three school districts (urban, suburban, and urban ring) with grades 6 - 12 are participating in this study. Differences among and between grade levels, gender, and school demographics at the dimension and item-level will be presented.
Ordinal Regression Analysis: Fitting The Continuation Ratio Model To Educational Data Using Stata, Xing Liu
Ordinal Regression Analysis: Fitting The Continuation Ratio Model To Educational Data Using Stata, Xing Liu
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
Ordinal data are widely available to educational researchers. One of the most commonly used models to analyze ordinal data is the proportional odds (PO) model, which is also known as the cumulative odds model. However, when the research interest is focused on a particular category rather than at or below that category, given that an individual must pass through a lower category before achieving a higher level, the continuation ratio model (Fienberg, 1980; Hardin & Hilbe, 2007; Long & Freese, 2006) is a more appropriate choice than the proportional odds model. The purpose of this paper was to demonstrate the …

Bromide And Other Ions In The Snow, Firn Air, And Atmospheric Boundary Layer At Summit During Gshox, Jack E. Dibb, Luke D. Ziemba, J Luxford, P Beckman
Earth Sciences
Measurements of gas phase soluble bromide in the boundary layer and in firn air, and Br− in aerosol and snow, were made at Summit, Greenland (72.5° N, 38.4° W, 3200 m a.s.l.) as part of a larger investigation into the influence of Br chemistry on HOx cycling. The soluble bromide measurements confirm that photochemical activation of Br− in the snow causes release of active Br to the overlying air despite trace concentrations of Br− in the snow (means 15 and 8 nmol Br− kg−1 of snow in 2007 and 2008, respectively). Mixing ratios of …

The LMC star, SSTISAGE1C J050756.44-703453.9, was first noticed during a survey of EROS-2 light curves for stars with large irregular brightness variations typical of the R Coronae Borealis (RCB) class. However, the visible spectrum showing emission lines including the Balmer and Paschen series as well as many Fe ii lines is emphatically not that of an RCB star. This star has all of the characteristics of a typical UX Ori star. It has a spectral type of approximately A2 and has excited an Hii region in its vicinity. However, if it is an LMC member, then it is very luminous …
Three Dimensional Lattice Gravity As Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory, Simon Catterall
Three Dimensional Lattice Gravity As Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory, Simon Catterall
Physics - All Scholarship
We argue that a certain twisted supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in three dimensions with gauge group SU(2) possesses a set of topological observables whose expectation values can be computed in a related Chern Simons theory. This Chern Simons theory has been proposed as a definition of three dimensional Euclidean quantum gravity. Since the YM theory admits a discretization which preserves the values of topological observables we conjecture that it can be used as a non-perturbative definition of the quantum gravity theory.
