The Voice: 2001-2011

This edition of the Wooster Voice, published on October 29 of 2010, is eight pages long. On Saturday, Wooster Volunteer Network's volunteer week kicked off with a bunch of new events and opportunities. College campuses are still seeing a rise in substance abuse, including both drugs and alcohol. Students and faculty were given the opportunity to sign a beam of the new Scot Center, which is scheduled to open in January of 2012. A column on the left side of page two titled "Bite-Size News" discussed the volcano that erupted in Indonesia and the 'Hiccup Woman' who is on trial …

Copy number variants affect both disease and normal phenotypic variation, but those lying within heavily duplicated, highly identical sequence have been difficult to assay. By analyzing short-read mapping depth for 159 human genomes, we demonstrated accurate estimation of absolute copy number for duplications as small as 1.9 kilobase pairs, ranging from 0 to 48 copies. We identified 4.1 million "singly unique nucleotide" positions informative in distinguishing specific copies and used them to genotype the copy and content of specific paralogs within highly duplicated gene families. These data identify human-specific expansions in genes associated with brain development, reveal extensive population genetic …

Twisted Lattice Supersymmetry And Applications To Ads/Cft, Simon Catterall Oct 2010

Twisted Lattice Supersymmetry And Applications To Ads/Cft, Simon Catterall

Physics - All Scholarship

Review recent approaches to constructing supersymmetric lattice theories focusing in particular on the concept of topological twisting. The latter technique is shown to expose a nilpotent, scalar supersymmetry which can be implemented exactly in the lattice theory. Using these ideas a lattice action for \cN=4 super Yang-Mills in four dimensions can be written down which is gauge invariant, free of fermion doublers and respects one out of a total of 16 continuum supersymmetries. It is shown how these exact symmetries together with the large point group symmetry of the lattice strongly constrain the possible counterterms needed to renormalize the theory …

Optimal Discrete-In-Time Inventory Control Of A Single Deteriorating Product With Partial Backlogging, Yang Tan Oct 2010

Optimal Discrete-In-Time Inventory Control Of A Single Deteriorating Product With Partial Backlogging, Yang Tan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The implicit assumption in conventional inventory models is that the stored

products maintain the same utility forever, i.e., they can be stored for an infinite period of

time without losing their value or characteristics. However, generally speaking, almost all

products experience some sort of deterioration over time. Some products have very small

deterioration rates, and henceforth the effect of such deterioration can be neglected.

Some products may be subject to significant rates of deterioration. Fruits, vegetables,

drugs, alcohol and radioactive materials are examples that can experience significant

deterioration during storage. Therefore the effect of deterioration must be explicitly taken

into …

Finite Element Analysis Of Thermoelectric Systems With Applications In Self Assembly And Haptics, Patrick T. Mcknight Oct 2010

Finite Element Analysis Of Thermoelectric Systems With Applications In Self Assembly And Haptics, Patrick T. Mcknight

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Micro-scale self assembly is an attractive method for manufacturing sub-millimeter sized thermoelectric device parts. Challenges controlling assembly yield rates, however, have caused research to find novel ways to implement the process while still resulting in a working device. While a typical system uses single n-type and p-type material elements in series, one method used to increase the probability of a working device involves adding redundant parallel elements in clusters. The drawback to this technique is that thermal performance is affected in clusters which have missing elements. While one-dimensional modeling sufficiently describes overall performance in terms of average junction temperatures and …

Stereotype Logit Models For High Dimensional Data, Andre Williams Oct 2010

Stereotype Logit Models For High Dimensional Data, Andre Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Gene expression studies are of growing importance in the field of medicine. In fact, subtypes within the same disease have been shown to have differing gene expression profiles (Golub et al., 1999). Often, researchers are interested in differentiating a disease by a categorical classification indicative of disease progression. For example, it may be of interest to identify genes that are associated with progression and to accurately predict the state of progression using gene expression data. One challenge when modeling microarray gene expression data is that there are more genes (variables) than there are observations. In addition, the genes usually demonstrate …

Modeling And Predicting Taxi Times At Airports, Arjun Chauhan Oct 2010

Modeling And Predicting Taxi Times At Airports, Arjun Chauhan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research aims at providing methods in analyzing and estimating the taxi times of aircraft at airports, which are expected to be an important element for reducing taxiing delay and consequent excess fuel consumption and environmental costs. The proposed model involves a set of regression equations to model the taxi-out and taxi-in times at airports. The estimated results can be used to calculate the nominal taxi times, which are essential measures for evaluating the taxiing delays at airports. Given the outcomes of the regression model, an iterative algorithm is developed to predict taxi times. A case study at LGA shows …

Characterization Of The Esterification Reaction In High Free Fatty Acid Oils, Lucas Eli Porter Altic Oct 2010

Characterization Of The Esterification Reaction In High Free Fatty Acid Oils, Lucas Eli Porter Altic

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Energy and vegetable oil prices have caused many biodiesel producers to turn to waste cooking oils as feedstocks. These oils contain high levels of free fatty acids (FFAs) which make them difficult or impossible to convert to biodiesel by conventional production methods. Esterification is required for ultra-high FFA feedstocks such as Brown Grease. In addition, ultrasonic irradiation has the potential to improve the kinetics of the esterification reaction. 2-level, multi-factor DOE experiments were conducted to characterize the esterification reaction in ultra-high FFA oils as well as determine whether ultrasonic irradiation gives any benefit besides energy input. The study determined that …

Comparison Of Risky Decision Making Processes In Dyads And Individuals, Moumita Mukherjee Oct 2010

Comparison Of Risky Decision Making Processes In Dyads And Individuals, Moumita Mukherjee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The thesis compared the likelihood of taking risks in dyads and individuals in

varying situations. Patterns of risky decision making were examined in the standard risky

choice task and a novel risk management task. The relative successes of two theories of

risky decision making were assessed: Prospect Theory emphasizes perceptual and

psychophysical processes, whereas Security-Potential/Aspiration Level Theory

emphasizes dispositional and motivational processes. The thesis also examined dyads’

decision behavior in light of competing social influence perspectives regarding risky

versus cautious shifts and group polarization.

Participants, as individuals or as part of a dyad, made decisions in 23 trials about

hypothetical …

Differential Outcomes Effect: Increased Accuracy In Adults Learning Kanji With Stimulus Specific Rewards, Odette T. Miller, Kevin M. Waugh, Karen Chambers Oct 2010

Differential Outcomes Effect: Increased Accuracy In Adults Learning Kanji With Stimulus Specific Rewards, Odette T. Miller, Kevin M. Waugh, Karen Chambers

The Psychological Record

The differential outcomes effect refers to the increase in accuracy obtained in discrimination tasks when rewards provided for correct responses vary according to the stimulus presented. The present research examined this effect in a sample of 63 university students (18-38 yrs old) discriminating multiple stimuli. A computer task was used to teach the meanings of 15 Japanese kanji characters, with both immediate (photos) and backup (lottery prizes) rewards following correct responses. Students were randomly allocated to one of three conditions: a differential condition (photos and prizes were uniquely associated with specific kanji), a partial differential condition (photos but not prizes …

Endothelial Cell Capture Of Heparin-Binding Growth Factors Under Flow, Bing Zhao, Changjiang Zhang, Kimberly Forsten-Williams, Jun Zhang, Michael Fannon Oct 2010

Endothelial Cell Capture Of Heparin-Binding Growth Factors Under Flow, Bing Zhao, Changjiang Zhang, Kimberly Forsten-Williams, Jun Zhang, Michael Fannon

Ophthalmology and Visual Science Faculty Publications

Circulation is an important delivery method for both natural and synthetic molecules, but microenvironment interactions, regulated by endothelial cells and critical to the molecule's fate, are difficult to interpret using traditional approaches. In this work, we analyzed and predicted growth factor capture under flow using computer modeling and a three-dimensional experimental approach that includes pertinent circulation characteristics such as pulsatile flow, competing binding interactions, and limited bioavailability. An understanding of the controlling features of this process was desired. The experimental module consisted of a bioreactor with synthetic endothelial-lined hollow fibers under flow. The physical design of the system was incorporated …
