Gender Rules, Meredith M. Render Jan 2010

Gender Rules, Meredith M. Render

Articles

Sex stereotypes are of perennial concern within antidiscrimination law and theory, yet there is widespread disagreement about what constitutes a "sex stereotype." This Article enters the debate surrounding the correct understanding of "stereotype" and posits that the concept is too thin to serve as a criterion for distinguishing "discriminatory" gender generalizations from non-discriminatory, probabilistic descriptions of behavior. Instead, "stereotype" is a heuristic that has been used by courts and commentators to crudely capture judgments about the justness of applying sex-respecting rules. In this light, the Article argues that the stereotype heuristic should be abandoned in favor of a rule-centered analysis …

Person Or Place? A Contextual Event-History Analysis Of Homicide Victimization Risk, Emily R. Berthelot Jan 2010

Person Or Place? A Contextual Event-History Analysis Of Homicide Victimization Risk, Emily R. Berthelot

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study is a contextual event history analysis of the risk of homicide victimization in the United States from 1986 to 2002. Although the majority of research on homicide deals with how community factors influence homicide rates, a much less studied aspect of homicide victimization deals with the influence of individual factors on homicide victimization risk. This study examines the influence of contextual-level measures of social disorganization on the risk of homicide victimization and focuses specifically on how the effects of these measures change once individual-level characteristics are considered in the models. Grounded in social disorganization theory, this study includes …

The purpose of this study was to describe what a sample of registered nurses in the state of Louisiana, who are members of the Louisiana State Nurses' Association (LSNA), identify as deterrents to participation in web-based graduate nursing programs. Two hundred and eighty one RNs participated in the study. The 54 item four point Likert - type interval scale Deterrents to Participation in Web-Based Graduate Nursing Programs Survey Instrument was utilized to measure what LSNA member RNs identified as deterrents to participation in web-based graduate nursing programs. Eighteen items assessed demographic information about the respondents. A factor analysis revealed a …

Connections Between Individual Dispersal Behavior And The Multi-Scale Distribution Of A Saproxylic Beetle, Heather Bird Jackson Jan 2010

Connections Between Individual Dispersal Behavior And The Multi-Scale Distribution Of A Saproxylic Beetle, Heather Bird Jackson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Species incidence results from a complex interaction among species traits (e.g., mobility and behavior), intra- and inter-specific interactions, quality and configuration of the landscape, and historical events. Determining which factors are most important to incidence is difficult because the multiple processes affecting incidence operate at different temporal and spatial scales. I conducted an empirically-based study relating individual behavior (dispersal, habitat selection, and intra-specific interactions) with hierarchically-organized environmental filters to predict the incidence of Odontotaenius disjunctus (Passalidae), a saproxylic (=decayed wood dependent) beetle common to eastern North American forests, at multiple spatial scales. In dispersal experiments, O. disjunctus movement was faster …

The Power Struggle Between Americans And Creoles In The First Half Of The Nineteenth Century And Its Influence On The Architecture Of New Orleans, Sylvia Starns Mince Jan 2010

The Power Struggle Between Americans And Creoles In The First Half Of The Nineteenth Century And Its Influence On The Architecture Of New Orleans, Sylvia Starns Mince

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the first half of the nineteenth century the house types of the landscape and the footprint of New Orleans changed dramatically. Many of the changes can be attributed to the influx of the refugees from Saint Domingue and the Americans who immigrated from the North and the East Coast of the United States. Both sets of influxes reflect the impact of these two immigrant groups on the previously existing power structures in economics, politics, and society of the city. While the refugees from Saint Domingue more or less assimilated into the city, and in doing so, achieved power over …

The Effect Of Supraliminal Goal Primes On Brand Preference: The Mediating Roles Of Implicit And Explicit Attitudes, Nobuyuki Fukawa Jan 2010

The Effect Of Supraliminal Goal Primes On Brand Preference: The Mediating Roles Of Implicit And Explicit Attitudes, Nobuyuki Fukawa

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation investigates how supraliminal goal primes affect brand preference through explicit attitude and implicit attitude and whether the effect of supraliminal goal primes and/or mood on brand preference is mediated by cognitive load. Chapter 1 develops a conceptual framework and provides a theoretical background. Chapter 2 investigates how supraliminal goal primes and/or mood affect preference (Study 1), implicit attitude (Study 2) and explicit attitude (Study 3) in the context of luxury vs. frugal brand consumption. Chapter 2 also investigates whether the effect of goal primes and/or mood on preference is mediated by cognitive load. Chapter 3 considers whether, under …

Predatory Bundling And The Exclusionary Standard, J. Shahar Dillbary Jan 2010

Predatory Bundling And The Exclusionary Standard, J. Shahar Dillbary

Articles

Recent decisions--all relying on a stylized example first provided by the Ortho court--hold that a multi-product seller that uses a bundled discount in a way that excludes an equally or more efficient competitor engages in predatory bundling. According to these decisions, a bundle can be considered “predatory” even when the price of the bundle exceeds its cost. This Article shows that the Ortho court's stylized example and its monopoly leveraging theory are erroneous. This Article further demonstrates that even when a bundle's price excludes more efficient competitors and even when a component in the bundle is priced below cost, and …

A Study Of The Elongation Of Fibrils Of The Alzheimer's Amyloid Beta Protein With A Coarse-Grained Force Field, Ana Rojas Jan 2010

A Study Of The Elongation Of Fibrils Of The Alzheimer's Amyloid Beta Protein With A Coarse-Grained Force Field, Ana Rojas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a brain disorder named after the German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer, who first described the disease in 1906. AD is a form of dementia, characterized by impairment of memory and other intellectual abilities, caused by the loss of neurons and synapses (the structures that permit communication between neurons) in certain regions of the brain. Although the mechanism by which neurons are affected is not yet well understood, research points to a small protein, the beta-amyloid peptide (Abeta), as the first suspect. Ab chains are present in the brains of healthy individuals, but in AD patients, they associate …

An Exploration Of Strategy-Based Reading Instruction Using Expository Science Text In Grades 2-5, Carol Fetters Jan 2010

An Exploration Of Strategy-Based Reading Instruction Using Expository Science Text In Grades 2-5, Carol Fetters

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study explored reading strategy-based reading instruction using science expository text between grades 2-5. The exploration revealed that elementary teachers used a variety of reading strategies using expository text for science instruction in grades 2-5, and that time barriers exist for strategy-based instruction using informational text. Spradley’s (1980) Developmental Reading Sequence, interviews, observations, and case studies of elementary science teachers in grades 2-5 were research techniques utilized for this study. This study centered on case studies of six elementary teachers and how they used reading strategies during science instruction. The findings of the study revealed that although the teachers’ use …

The Conserved Deda Family Of E. Coli Membrane Proteins: Genetic And Topological Analysis, Kandi Sheral Thompkins Jan 2010

The Conserved Deda Family Of E. Coli Membrane Proteins: Genetic And Topological Analysis, Kandi Sheral Thompkins

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ludox density gradients were used to enrich for Escherichia coli mutants with conditional growth defects and alterations in membrane composition. A temperature-sensitive mutant named Lud135 was isolated with mutations in two related, nonessential genes: yghB and yqjA. yghB harbors a single missense mutation (G203D) and yqjA contains a nonsense mutation (W92TGA) in Lud135. Both mutations are required for the temperature-sensitive phenotype: targeted deletion of both genes in a wild-type background results in a strain with a similar phenotype and expression of either gene from a plasmid restores growth at elevated temperatures. The mutant has altered membrane phospholipid levels, with elevated …

Analysis And Modeling Of Hurricane Impacts On A Coastal Louisiana Lake Bottom, Angelina Freeman Jan 2010

Analysis And Modeling Of Hurricane Impacts On A Coastal Louisiana Lake Bottom, Angelina Freeman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Tropical cyclone impacts on wetland, terrestrial, and shelf systems have been previously studied and reasonably delineated, but little is known about the response of coastal lakes to storm events. For the first time, tropical cyclone impacts on a shallow coastal lake in the Louisiana coastal plain have been studied using direct lines of evidence and numerical modeling. Using side-scan sonar, CHIRP subbottom and echo sounder bathymetric profiles, the lake bottom and shallow subsurface of Sister Lake was imaged pre- and post-Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to provide a geologic framework for assessing the effects of these storms. Box cores were collected …

Paper 1: Investigating Mathematical Literacy Through Teacher Language, Alyson Lischka Jan 2010

Paper 1: Investigating Mathematical Literacy Through Teacher Language, Alyson Lischka

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

Communication about mathematical concepts using appropriate terminology is a standard established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. However, international test results show that United States’ students are lagging in mathematical literacy. This case study analyzes the ways in which instructors use language to help students move toward conceptual understanding of mathematical vocabulary. Three mathematics education professors at a mid-size four year institution were observed teaching math classes to students enrolled in elementary or secondary certification programs. Collected data included: audio-recorded observations and field notes, lesson artifacts such as quizzes and handouts, and audio-recorded interviews with each participant. Findings …

Paper 3: Extending K-8 Mathematics Concepts In Alternate Bases, Dianna J. Spence Jan 2010

Paper 3: Extending K-8 Mathematics Concepts In Alternate Bases, Dianna J. Spence

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

When learning to represent mathematics with manipulatives, many pre-service K-8 teachers rely on memorized rote procedures to perform the associated mathematical tasks; then they arrange the manipulatives to match their result, often with minimal understanding of underlying mathematical connections. In a Number and Operations course for K-8 pre-service teachers, a portion of the class was conducted in alternate bases: Base 6 and Base 8 Blocks were used to model operations with integers to facilitate deeper understanding of the number systems and arithmetic processes being represented. Fractions and decimals were later covered only in Base 10. On midterm and final exams, …

Public Interest(S) And Fourth Amendment Enforcement, Alexander A. Reinert Jan 2010

Public Interest(S) And Fourth Amendment Enforcement, Alexander A. Reinert

Articles

Fourth Amendment events generate substantial controversy among the public and in the legal community. Yet there is orthodoxy to Fourth Amendment thinking, reflected in the near universal assumption by courts and commentators alike that the amendment creates only tension between privately held individual liberties and public-regarding interests in law enforcement and security. On this account, courts are faced with a clear choice when mediating Fourth Amendment conflicts: side with the individual by declaring a particular intrusion to be in violation of the Constitution or side with the public by permitting the intrusion. Scholarly literature and court decisions are accordingly littered …

National Security And The Shadows Of Judicial "Common Sense", Alexander A. Reinert Jan 2010

National Security And The Shadows Of Judicial "Common Sense", Alexander A. Reinert

Articles

The article critiques Peter Margulies's analysis of cognitive biases in judicial decision-making within national-security cases, particularly his proposed evidentiary presumption to address these biases. While acknowledging Margulies's contribution to the discussion, the article argues that his characterization of cases and proposed solution may oversimplify the complexities of judicial deference and interventionism. It suggests that the central issue in these cases is not excessive deference or interventionism but rather the government's resistance to transparency and the disclosure of sensitive information. The article advocates for a more nuanced approach, emphasizing managed discovery processes to balance national-security concerns with constitutional rights.

The Role Of Physical And Ecological Barriers In The Diversification Process Of Birds In The Guiana Shield, Northern Amazonia, Luciano Nicolás Naka Jan 2010

The Role Of Physical And Ecological Barriers In The Diversification Process Of Birds In The Guiana Shield, Northern Amazonia, Luciano Nicolás Naka

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding the factors that influence the formation and location of distribution boundaries is important for the study of evolutionary processes. These factors can be studied effectively at suture zones, regions containing disproportionally high numbers of contact zones (CZs) and phylogeographic breaks (PBs). Together, CZs and PBs offer complementary views of current and historical factors that separate or bring together populations of closely related taxa. For my dissertation, I studied a suture zone in northern Amazonia, where ~100 pairs of taxa replace one another geographically. I analyzed the Guiana Shield avifauna, using bird distributions to redefine the boundaries of the Guianan …

Application-Level Optimization Of End-To-End Data Transfer Throughput, Esma Yildirim Jan 2010

Application-Level Optimization Of End-To-End Data Transfer Throughput, Esma Yildirim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

For large-scale distributed applications, effective use of available network throughput and optimization of data transfer speed is crucial for end-to-end application performance. Today, many regional and national optical networking initiatives such as LONI, ESnet and Teragrid provide high speed network connectivity to their users. However, majority of the users fail to obtain even a fraction of the theoretical speeds promised by these networks due to issues such as sub-optimal protocol tuning, disk bottleneck on the sending and/or receiving ends, and processor limitations. This implies that having high speed networks in place is important but not sufficient for the improvement of …

Influence Of Unstable Soil Movement On Pile-Founded Concrete Floodwalls And A Resulting Design Methodology, Richard James Varuso Jan 2010

Influence Of Unstable Soil Movement On Pile-Founded Concrete Floodwalls And A Resulting Design Methodology, Richard James Varuso

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Efforts are underway in the New Orleans area to raise the elevations of its levee system to combat the effects of hurricane storm surge. When complete, the majority of the system will be comprised of a combination of levees, sheet pile I-Walls, floodgates, and pile-supported concrete floodwalls, commonly referred to as T-Walls. Given the magnitude of the hydrostatic forces associated with storm surge, global instability is failure mechanism that must be considered in the design of T-Walls. In the past, it was assumed that these forces would be resisted by the T-Wall’s sheet pile cut-off wall. Recent literature review and …

Macroinstability And Perturbation In Turbulent Stirred Tank Flows, Somnath Roy Jan 2010

Macroinstability And Perturbation In Turbulent Stirred Tank Flows, Somnath Roy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Impeller stirred tank reactors (STRs) are commonly used in the chemical processing industries for a variety of mixing and blending technologies. In this research, a numerical study of flow and mixing inside turbulently agitated STRs are carried out. An immersed boundary method (IBM) is utilized to represent moving impeller geometries in the background of multi-block structured curvilinear fluid. The IBM This curvilinear-IBM methodology is further combined with the large eddy simulation (LES) technique to address the issue of modeling unsteady turbulent flows in the STR. Verification of the combined IBM-LES implementation strategy in curvilinear coordinates is done through comparisons with …

An Analysis Of Predictors Of Exclusionary Discipline Practices And The Relationship With Student Achievement Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling, Amanda Dahir Jan 2010

An Analysis Of Predictors Of Exclusionary Discipline Practices And The Relationship With Student Achievement Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling, Amanda Dahir

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

School discipline plays an important role in maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment for students. Disruptive behavior in the classroom interferes with classroom learning time making it difficult to accomplish academic goals. A common method of handling discipline problems within schools is removing the disruptive student from their classroom (e.g. suspension or expulsion). There is a great need to study and understand the differences between school disciplinary practices and to allow research findings to guide the way in which discipline is administered. The current study examined a large database for the entire state of Louisiana to determine the relationship …
