Treatment Strategies In Acute Myelogenous Leukemia : Investigating Hsp90 And P53 As Targets, Jennifer M. Napper

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is the deadliest of the lymphatic and bone marrow cancers. Patients diagnosed with AML have a five year survival rate of 23.4%. AML is characterized by an accumulation of undifferentiated and functionless myeloid precursors in the bone marrow and blood. Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) inhibitors, such as 17-AAG, an analog of geldanamycin (GM), are currently undergoing phase I, and II and III clinical trials for various cancers with mixed results. I found distinct responses to 17-AAG treatment among the AML cell lines tested. I also discovered two mutant TP53 alleles in Kasumi-3 cells, an AML …

Planning For Secret Disclosure : Applying Berger's Planning Theory To The Disclosure Of Secrets, Sarah Rae Meadows Craiger Jan 2010

Planning For Secret Disclosure : Applying Berger's Planning Theory To The Disclosure Of Secrets, Sarah Rae Meadows Craiger

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This research examined the strategies used for secret disclosure with Berger’s Planning Theory’s (1997) hierarchy principle, which orders plans according to complexity. Afifi and Steuber’s (2009) Strategies for Sharing Secrets Scale categorizes secret disclosure strategies that vary in complexity. Based on Planning Theory’s hierarchy principle, it was hypothesized that when a plan to disclose a secret is thwarted, individuals will move from a less complex disclosure strategy to a more complex disclosure strategy. Findings revealed correlations between strategy complexity and order of strategy choice were low; the null hypothesis was accepted.

An Analysis Of Strength And Ductility Of Ultrafine Grained Al Alloys, R. Kapoor, P. S. De, R. S. Mishra Jan 2010

An Analysis Of Strength And Ductility Of Ultrafine Grained Al Alloys, R. Kapoor, P. S. De, R. S. Mishra

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper brings together and compares data of various ultrafine grained (UFG) Al alloys processed through different routes. in general, the trend of decreasing ductility with increasing strength was observed for the UFG alloys. as compared to the coarse grained (CG) alloys, the UFG alloys show a lower ductility, a lower extent of work-hardening and a lower uniform elongation. Unlike the CG alloys, which show a large fraction of uniform to total elongation, in UFG alloys this fraction varies with processing technique. It is shown here that aging of some UFG Al alloys improves ductility. Further, it is shown that …

A Study Of Japanese Women Today: Changing Gender Roles And Attitudes Toward Marriage, Shiho Hosokawa Jan 2010

A Study Of Japanese Women Today: Changing Gender Roles And Attitudes Toward Marriage, Shiho Hosokawa

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Japanese women and men are getting married later in life than before and the number of Japanese choosing to live a single person's lifestyle has increased since the 1980's. In the 1970's, the number of women working outside the home was lower than now and most of those who did work, did so only to supplement their husband's income. Today, many Japanese women obtain college degrees and have a paid job, the same as men do. Yet, based on my personal experience and those of others I know, Japanese women often remain the primary caretakers in the home. They are …

Testing The Selective Chivalry Theory In Iowa : Gender Sentencing Of Rural Property Offenders, Maria Dorothy Herring Koeppel Jan 2010

Testing The Selective Chivalry Theory In Iowa : Gender Sentencing Of Rural Property Offenders, Maria Dorothy Herring Koeppel

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

During recent decades, sentencing patterns of offenders based on gender have been the topic of criminological and sociological research. There has been particular attention given to the lenient sentencing of female offenders compared to male offenders. Several research studies have found that gender affects the sentencing process in ways that are advantageous to female offenders, such as lower incarceration rates and shorter prison sentences. Despite the existing research on gender and sentencing, there are still several specific areas that need to be studied regarding this topic, such as property crimes and rural areas. The current research adds to the existing …

Testing The Relationship Between Body Dysmorphic Disorder And Pathological Skin Picking Using A Bidimensional Model Of ‘Fear’ And ‘Anger', Nicole Christine Egan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Body image concerns are pervasive throughout Western culture, but there is a subset of the population who become so preoccupied with specific aspects of their appearance that it leads to clinically significant distress and impairment in their daily lives. This study examined symptoms of two disorders dealing with body concerns: Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and Pathological Skin Picking (PSP). The primary purpose of this study was to use the bidimensional model of 'fear' and 'anger' (Lara et al., 2006) to test the relationship between BOD & PSP. The model suggests that BDD and PSP are both characterized by high 'anger' …

Faculty Hiring Committees Perceptions Of Hiring Processes And Subjectivity, Laura Caraleen Foster Jan 2010

Faculty Hiring Committees Perceptions Of Hiring Processes And Subjectivity, Laura Caraleen Foster

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Hiring the most capable applicants has a large impact on the bottom line of an organization. The most effective tools to identify talent are well known to IndustrialOrganizational Psychologists, but these analytical tools are used less frequently than less effective intuitive procedures, such as the traditional unstructured job interview. In a survey of university faculty, we found that the most important factor influencing the use of a selection tool was its perceived validity, but these perceptions were not wellcalibrated to actual criterion related validity. We found some evidence that perceived validity was influenced by implicit beliefs about hiring. A body …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the current paper, a high-fidelity large eddy simulation solver is coupled to our modified line-by-line radiative transport equation solver to study the effects of absorption turbulence-radiation interations in a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer, representative of the Orion CEV entering Earth's atmosphere, at peak heating condition. The turbulent and radiation fields represent extreme conditions typical of Orion, as the simulated boundary layer represents the region of high turbulence coupled to region of highest incident radiation. A simplification in the calculation of molecular spectra with a single temperature property database in allows for tractable calculation of spectral properties. A comparison of …

Direct Detection Of No Produced By High-Temperature Surface-Catalyzed Atom Recombination, Dušan A. Pejaković, Jochen Marschall, Lian Duan, Maria P. Martin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The surface-catalytic recombination of oxygen and nitrogen atoms to form nitric oxide was confirmed by the direct detection of product NO molecules, using single-photon laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. Experiments were performed from room temperature to 1200 K in a quartz diffusion-tube sidearm reactor enclosed in a high temperature tube furnace. Atomic nitrogen was generated using a microwave discharge, and atomic oxygen was produced via the rapid gas-phase titration reaction N + NO → O + N2. The use of isotopically labeled titration gases 15N16O and 15N18O allowed for the unambiguous identification of nitric oxide produced by the O + N surface …

Integration Mechanisms For Heading Perception, Elif M. Sikoglu, Finnegan J. Calabro, Scott A. Beardsley, Lucia M. Vaina Jan 2010

Integration Mechanisms For Heading Perception, Elif M. Sikoglu, Finnegan J. Calabro, Scott A. Beardsley, Lucia M. Vaina

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Previous studies of heading perception suggest that human observers employ spatiotemporal pooling to accommodate noise in optic flow stimuli. Here, we investigated how spatial and temporal integration mechanisms are used for judgments of heading through a psychophysical experiment involving three different types of noise. Furthermore, we developed two ideal observer models to study the components of the spatial information used by observers when performing the heading task. In the psychophysical experiment, we applied three types of direction noise to optic flow stimuli to differentiate the involvement of spatial and temporal integration mechanisms. The results indicate that temporal integration mechanisms play …

Citation Difficulties, Mariolina Rizzi Salvatori, Patricia Donahue Jan 2010

Citation Difficulties, Mariolina Rizzi Salvatori, Patricia Donahue

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Issues of citation have interested us for some time, especially as they relate to reductive and dismissive representations of student work in our professional discourse: for example, how scholarly articles foreground the status of students as “student” or how the move of referring to students by first name only is infantilizing (see Salvatori and Donahue, 2010). We also have a long standing interest in writing about teaching in ways that our primary field (English Studies) and SoTL would recognize as “scholarly”: intellectual inquiries into processes of teaching and learning that build upon previously published research, cite it appropriately, and acknowledge …

Student Attitudes And Approaches To Online Homework, David J. Doorn, Susan Janssen, Maureen O'Brien

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Over the past two decades there has been increasing movement toward the use of computers and the internet in conjunction with many courses across the educational spectrum. In addition to having consequences for course delivery, both inside and outside of the classroom, this movement has had an impact on the coursework that is required of students. In this study we consider the use of online homework as an alternative to the traditional medium of pencil and paper. Surveys were conducted to gather data on students' attitudes and practices related to online homework, and these data have been linked to course …

Using A Sotl Approach In Designing And Teaching A Graduate Seminar Course, Celia Lo Jan 2010

Using A Sotl Approach In Designing And Teaching A Graduate Seminar Course, Celia Lo

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt:

The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences embraces the contemporary ideal for criminal justice education. It has provided benchmarks that criminal justice education programs should measure themselves against to ensure quality, recommending that the programs conduct outcome assessments as a means of improving themselves over time (Janeksela & Iacovetta, 1992; Moriarty, 2006). The benchmarks measure how well the programs, both undergraduate and graduate, develop critical thinking, communication, technology and computing, quantitative reasoning, and ethical decision-making skills,...

Included in this discography are 317 total recordings, 145 of which were not included in any previous attempt. Of these 145, at least sixty-three were released …

The Dialogism Of Self And Other In Contemporary American Drama, Shih-Yi Huang Jan 2010

The Dialogism Of Self And Other In Contemporary American Drama, Shih-Yi Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work is interdisciplinary in orientation and brings together American theatre (and culture) and contemporary ethical philosophy. I am introducing the French philosopher Emmanuel Lévinas and his theory of Self and Other to an analysis of contemporary American drama—a mode of approach that is new to the discipline of theatre studies. Lévinas’s insights are particularly relevant to the concerns of the 21st century and how we might rethink relationships and values. My work looks at contemporary American plays in terms of nationalism, gender politics, racial dynamics and ecological issues. I contend that these playwrights are attempting to go beyond conventional …

Lattice Boltzmann Modeling For Shallow Water Equations Using High Performance Computing, Kevin Tubbs Jan 2010

Lattice Boltzmann Modeling For Shallow Water Equations Using High Performance Computing, Kevin Tubbs

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation project is to extend the standard Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for shallow water flows in order to deal with three dimensional flow fields. The shallow water and mass transport equations have wide applications in ocean, coastal, and hydraulic engineering, which can benefit from the advantages of the LBM. The LBM has recently become an attractive numerical method to solve various fluid dynamics phenomena; however, it has not been extensively applied to modeling shallow water flow and mass transport. Only a few works can be found on improving the LBM for mass transport in shallow water …

Population Genetics And Systematics Of A Species-Rich Clade Of Neotropical Reef Fishes, The Tubeblenny Genus Acanthemblemaria, Ron Israel Eytan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Neotropical coral reef fish communities are species-poor compared to those of the Indo-West Pacific. An exception to that pattern is the blenny clade Chaenopsidae, one of only three coral reef fish families endemic to the Neotropics. Within the chaenopsids, the genus Acanthemblemaria is the most species-rich. To understand the origin and maintenance of genetic and species diversity in these fishes, I characterized the population genetics for two Acanthemblemaria species, reconstructed the phylogeny of the group, and identified suites of correlated morphological characters responsible for the distinctive skull morphology of these fishes. By combining nuclear and mitochondrial sequence data I was …
