Information Integration In A Grid Environment Applications In The Bioinformatics Domain, Ahmed M. Radwan Dec 2010

Information Integration In A Grid Environment Applications In The Bioinformatics Domain, Ahmed M. Radwan

Open Access Dissertations

Grid computing emerged as a framework for supporting complex operations over large datasets; it enables the harnessing of large numbers of processors working in parallel to solve computing problems that typically spread across various domains. We focus on the problems of data management in a grid/cloud environment. The broader context of designing a services oriented architecture (SOA) for information integration is studied, identifying the main components for realizing this architecture. The BioFederator is a web services-based data federation architecture for bioinformatics applications. Based on collaborations with bioinformatics researchers, several domain-specific data federation challenges and needs are identified. The BioFederator addresses …

Best Practices In The Use Of Employee Assessment Instruments In Leadership Development, Yvonne Kinney-Hockert Dec 2010

Best Practices In The Use Of Employee Assessment Instruments In Leadership Development, Yvonne Kinney-Hockert

Theses and Graduate Projects

Companies both large and small have been interested for decades in offering skill, talent and leadership development opportunities for their employees. These experiences can take place through a variety of talent management methods through selection, formal and informal training, performance management and succession planning.

One of the most common ways to begin or enhance any development for teams or individuals is through the use of assessments, surveys and instruments employees complete online or fill out in paper format. Utilization of assessment instruments is a beneficial practice in creating a foundation where individuals begin to understand differences in leadership styles, decision …

Strict Isolation Compliance: A Quality Improvement Initiative Implementation Process, Debra Apenhorst

Theses and Graduate Projects

This is a retrospective description and evaluation of an implementation process for a quality improvement initiative. The intent of the quality improvement initiative was to improve compliance with isolation as a means of reducing healthcare associated infections. The project evaluates the effectiveness of the implementation strategies through the lens of the Health Belief Modal and Watson's theoretical framework. This evaluation considers the health beliefs of healthcare workers and the impact on behavior and implications of nurse as vigilant guardian, protecting the patients by decreasing the risk of acquiring an infection while receiving medical care. Integral to Watson's theory is the …

Liquid-Liquid Phase Transition And Glass Transition In A Monoatomic Model System, Limei Xu, Sergey V. Buldyrev, Nicolas Giovambattista, H. Eugene Stanley Dec 2010

Liquid-Liquid Phase Transition And Glass Transition In A Monoatomic Model System, Limei Xu, Sergey V. Buldyrev, Nicolas Giovambattista, H. Eugene Stanley

Publications and Research

We review our recent study on the polyamorphism of the liquid and glass states in a monatomic system, a two-scale spherical-symmetric Jagla model with both attractive and repulsive interactions. This potential with a parametrization for which crystallization can be avoided and both the glass transition and the liquid-liquid phase transition are clearly separated, displays water-like anomalies as well as polyamorphism in both liquid and glassy states, providing a unique opportunity to study the interplay between the liquid-liquid phase transition and the glass transition. Our study on a simple model may be useful in understanding recent studies of polyamorphism in metallic …

A Comparative Verification Of Forecasts From Two Operational Solar Wind Models, Donald C. Norquist, Warner C. Meeks Dec 2010

A Comparative Verification Of Forecasts From Two Operational Solar Wind Models, Donald C. Norquist, Warner C. Meeks

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The solar wind (SW) and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) have a significant influence on the near‐Earth space environment. In this study we evaluate and compare forecasts from two models that predict SW and IMF conditions: the Hakamada‐Akasofu‐Fry (HAF) version 2, operational at the Air Force Weather Agency, and Wang‐Sheeley‐Arge (WSA) version 1.6, executed routinely at the Space Weather Prediction Center. SW speed (Vsw) and IMF polarity (Bpol) forecasts at L1 were compared with Wind and Advanced Composition Explorer satellite observations. Verification statistics were computed by study year and forecast day. Results revealed that both models’ mean Vsw are …

Preliminary Analysis Of Themally Induced Condensed Phase Electron Transfer Reactions Of Zinc Chloride, Chromium Chloride And Lead Chloride With Electropositive Metals., Manasa Anumula

Student Theses and Dissertations

The thermal stabilities and thermal decomposition at elevated temperatures for the metal halides zinc chloride, chromium chloride and lead chloride with electropositive metals were studied. The reaction of zinc chloride with Mn is conducted in both Cu and alumina pans. It was postulated that zinc chloride might be reacting with Cu in Cu pan. The reaction between zinc chloride and Mn is also observed. The reactions of chromium chloride and chromium chloride hexahydrate with Zn and Mn are conducted in Cu pans. The obtained TG/DTA plots showed reactions in all the cases. The reactions with chromium chloride hexahydrate are observed …

A Reusable Persistence Framework For Replicating Empirical Studies On Data From Open Source Repositories, Scott Bong-Soo Chun Dec 2010

A Reusable Persistence Framework For Replicating Empirical Studies On Data From Open Source Repositories, Scott Bong-Soo Chun

Theses and Dissertations

Empirical research is inexact and error-prone leading researchers to agree that replication of experiments is a necessary step to validating empirical results. Unfortunately, replicating experiments requires substantial investments in manpower and time. These resource requirements can be reduced by incorporating component reuse when building tools for empirical experimentation. Bokeo is an initiative within the Sequoia Lab of the BYU Computer Science Department to develop a platform to assist in the empirical study of software engineering. The i3Persistence Framework is a component of Bokeo which enables researchers to easily build and rapidly deploy tools for empirical experiments by providing an easy-to-use …

Large Scale Application Of Vibration Sensors For Fan Monitoring At Commercial Layer Hen Houses, Ji-Qin Ni, Yan Chen, Claude A. Diehl, Albert J. Heber, Bill W. Bogan, Li-Long Chai

School of Agricultural & Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Continuously monitoring the operation of each individual fan can significantly improve the measurement quality of aerial pollutant emissions from animal buildings that have a large number of fans. To monitor the fan operation by detecting the fan vibration is a relatively new technique. A low-cost electronic vibration sensor was developed and commercialized. However, its large scale application has not yet been evaluated. This paper presents long-term performance results of this vibration sensor at two large commercial layer houses. Vibration sensors were installed on 164 fans of 130 cm diameter to continuously monitor the fan on/off status for two years. The …

Spiritually Strengthening Learning Environments In Higher Education, Seth A. Martinez Dec 2010

Spiritually Strengthening Learning Environments In Higher Education, Seth A. Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative thesis brings attention to a phenomenon that is largely neglected in the world of higher education: the faith-intellect relationship. The main purpose of this multiple-case study is to provide a rich description of what a highly spiritually strengthening learning environment in higher education looks and feels like to those participating. In essence, the researcher provides a vicarious experience for the reader. A learning environment that fosters spiritually strengthening experiences for the students is one in which the student-teacher interactions are of high quality and in which the attributes possessed by both the professor and students are manifest through …

K-12 Teacher Perceptions Regarding Hispanic Family Educational Beliefs And Language And Literacy Practices, Marisa Lee Dec 2010

K-12 Teacher Perceptions Regarding Hispanic Family Educational Beliefs And Language And Literacy Practices, Marisa Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Abundant research exists examining what occurs in Hispanic homes regarding educational beliefs and literacy and language practices before and after children enter the school system. What is not known is whether or not teachers are aware of these practices and beliefs. The research questions of this study focus first on what perceptions K-12 teachers have about Hispanic educational beliefs and practices, and second, on determining if those perceptions correlate with teacher training in English as a second language (ESL). To answer these questions, a questionnaire was written based on an extensive review of literature regarding three aspects: Hispanic educational beliefs, …

Predicting Marital Dissolution Using Data From Both Spouses, Chao-Chin Lu Dec 2010

Predicting Marital Dissolution Using Data From Both Spouses, Chao-Chin Lu

Theses and Dissertations

The present research studies marital dissolution using data from both spouses from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) and uses the method of multiple imputation to handle missing data. Role theory and another four approaches (social exchange theory, stake theory, gender perspective and heterogeneity perspective) are used to make a methodological argument why using data from both spouses is necessary to study marital stability. Five data sets are imputed and there are 3,777 observations in each imputed data set. Main research findings are as followed. First, the model fits of the data from both spouses on marital dissolution …

Capture And Access Of Multiple Screen Presentations, Kelv H. Cutler Dec 2010

Capture And Access Of Multiple Screen Presentations, Kelv H. Cutler

Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge transferred during meetings is often ephemeral in nature and thus must be captured if it is to be retained. Ideally, a capture solution should be able to 1) accommodate any number of screens without sacrificing image quality and 2) allow dynamic access to a complete media capture while the capture is taking place. Both students and employees can benefit from the information captured during the lectures and meetings for enhanced discussion and afterward for knowledge retention. Current systems do not support multiple screen capture well, and no system supports dynamic access to the active meeting capture during the meeting. …

Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Lower Pennsylvanian (Bashkirian, Morrowan) Round Valley Limestone, Split Mountain Anticline (Dinosaur National Monument) And In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Nathan Robert Davis Dec 2010

Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Lower Pennsylvanian (Bashkirian, Morrowan) Round Valley Limestone, Split Mountain Anticline (Dinosaur National Monument) And In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Nathan Robert Davis

Theses and Dissertations

The Early Pennsylvanian (Bashkirian/Morrowan) Round Valley Limestone of northeastern Utah was deposited on the Wyoming shelf, a slowly subsiding depositional surface located between the Eagle and Oquirrh basins. The 311-foot-thick Round Valley Limestone displays a distinct cyclicity formed by stacked, meter-scale parasequences, comprised of a limited suite of open- to restricted-marine limestones with minor interbeds of siltstone and shale. Open-marine deposits are characterized by mudstone and heterozoan wackestone-packstone microfacies (MF1-4) and comprise the lower portions of parasequences. Rocks of these microfacies were deposited during maximum high-order transgression of the shelf. As sediment filled the limited accommodation, the shelf became restricted, …

Gender And Color Specific Differences In Event Related Potentials, Abhishek Trikha Dec 2010

Gender And Color Specific Differences In Event Related Potentials, Abhishek Trikha

Theses and Dissertations

This project analyzed gender and color-specific differences in event-related potentials (ERPs). Previous studies have shown that males process color differently than females. In a recent study, sex differences were found in ERPs during a visual object recognition task. There were higher EEG amplitudes in females (especially P300) than males. Significant sex and color-specific differences have been found in diseases involving altered dopamine (DA) machinery. Thus, we analyzed differences between ERPs in males vs females during a color task. We also compared the color-specific differences in ERPs between males and females. Males and females participated in EEG recording sessions for 2 …

Christian Realism And Augustinian (?) Liberalism, Peter Iver Kaufman Dec 2010

Christian Realism And Augustinian (?) Liberalism, Peter Iver Kaufman

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Surely there is enough kindling lying about in the Bible and in subsequent moral theology to fire up love for neighbors and compassion for countless “friends” in foreign parts--and in crisis. And, surely, the momentum of love’s labor for the just redistribution of resources, fueled by activists’ appeals for solidarity, should be sustained by stressing that we are creatures made for affection, not for aggression. Yet experience, plus the history of the Christian traditions, taught Reinhold Niebuhr, who memorably reminded Christian realists, how often love was “defeated,” how a “strategy of brotherhood . . . degenerates from mutuality to a …
