The Effects Of Rhes On Opioid Analgesia, Franklin Lee Dec 2010

The Effects Of Rhes On Opioid Analgesia, Franklin Lee

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Rhes (Ras homolog enriched in striatum) has been identified as a novel monomeric G-protein involved in dopaminergic and other signaling in the striatum. Given the many effects of opioids that involve striatal circuitry, genetically engineered mice that are incapable of making Rhes (rhes-/-) and their control littermates (rhes+/+) were subjected to behavioral tests to determine if any differences existed in opioid analgesia, tolerance, withdrawal, reward, and locomotion. Rhes-/- mice showed an increased opioid mediated analgesia, along with an absence of tolerance and decrease in withdrawal when compared with rhes+/+ littermates. However, no significant changes were seen in opioid induced locomotor …

Forensic Reconstruction Of Fragmented Variable Bitrate Mp3 Files, Abhilash Sajja Dec 2010

Forensic Reconstruction Of Fragmented Variable Bitrate Mp3 Files, Abhilash Sajja

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

File carving is a technique used to recover data from a digital device without the help of file system metadata. The current file carvers use techniques such as using a list of header and footer values and key word searching to retrieve the information specific to a file type. These techniques tend to fail when the files to be recovered are fragmented. Recovering the fragmented files is one of the primary challenges faced by file carving. In this research we focus on Variable Bit Rate (VBR) MP3 files. MP3 is one of the most widely used file formats for storing …

Nonattribution Properties Of Jpeg Quantization Tables, Punnya Tuladhar Dec 2010

Nonattribution Properties Of Jpeg Quantization Tables, Punnya Tuladhar

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In digital forensics, source camera identification of digital images has drawn attention in recent years. An image does contain information of its camera and/or editing software somewhere in it. But the interest of this research is to find manufacturers (henceforth will be called make and model) of a camera using only the header information, such as quantization table and huffman table, of the JPEG encoding. Having done research on around 110, 000 images, we reached to state that "For all practical purposes, using quantization and huffman tables alone to predict a camera make and model isn't a viable approach". We …

Spiral Welded Pipe Piles For Structures In Southeastern Louisiana, Leeland Richard Dec 2010

Spiral Welded Pipe Piles For Structures In Southeastern Louisiana, Leeland Richard

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In an effort to obtain 100-year level hurricane protection for southeastern Louisiana, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has implemented design guidelines that both levees and structures shall be designed to. Historically, USACE has used concrete piles or steel H-piles as the foundations for these structures. Because of the magnitude of obtaining 100-year level hurricane protection, limited resources, and a condensed timeline, spiral welded pipe piles can be manufactured as an alternative to either the concrete piles or steel H-piles. This research will provide the necessary background for understanding pile foundations, will compare the behaviors of spiral welded pipe …

The Facets Of Hostile Attributional Bias: The Importance Of Aggression Subtypes And Provocateur Motivation, Melissa Kunimatsu Dec 2010

The Facets Of Hostile Attributional Bias: The Importance Of Aggression Subtypes And Provocateur Motivation, Melissa Kunimatsu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined the association of hostile attributional bias (HAB) with the functions (proactive and reactive) and subtypes (reactive relational and reactive overt) of aggression as well as with perceived provocateur motivation (proactive or reactive) in a high school sample (mean age = 16.51; 50% male; 31% Caucasian). Revisions to a measure of HAB were made both in administration (adding animations/narration) and content (adding perceived provocateur motivation questions). Results indicated that the animation/narration measure showed comparable internal consistency reliability to the written and displayed an increased ability to predict total aggression. However, a unique relationship between HAB and reactive …

Ecology Of Prince Of Wales Spruce Grouse, Aleya R. Nelson Dec 2010

Ecology Of Prince Of Wales Spruce Grouse, Aleya R. Nelson

Biological Sciences

Recently, spruce grouse on Prince of Wales Island (POW) in southeast Alaska have been proposed as a separate subspecies. Furthermore, life-history of spruce grouse on POW, which is temperate coastal rainforest, varies sufficiently from birds in mainland areas, mostly boreal forest, to warrant specific management. Therefore, I examined the ecology of spruce grouse on POW to determine how timber harvest influences their survival and habitat selection and ultimately to provide recommendations for their conservation. During 2007-2009, we found that the greatest variation in survival probability was attributed to breeding status. The annual survival of non-breeding birds was 0.72±0.082 (S±) while …

Waterbird Distribution And Habitat In The Prairie Pothole Region, U.S.A., Valerie Steen Dec 2010

Waterbird Distribution And Habitat In The Prairie Pothole Region, U.S.A., Valerie Steen

Biological Sciences

The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of north-central North America provides some of the most critical wetland habitat continent-wide to waterbirds. Agricultural conversion has resulted in widespread wetland drainage. Furthermore, climate change projections indicate a drier future, which will alter remaining wetland habitats. I evaluated Black Tern (Chlidonias niger) habitat selection and the potential impacts of climate change on the distribution of waterbird species. To examine Black Tern habitat selection, I surveyed 589 wetlands in North and South Dakota in 2008-09, then created multivariate habitat models. I documented breeding at 5% and foraging at 17% of wetlands surveyed, and found local …

Multivariate Cluster Analysis Of The Mmpi-2 And Mmpi-2-Rf Scales In Spine Pain Patients With Financial Compensation: Characterization And Validation Of Chronic Pain Subgroups, Luis Aguerrevere Dec 2010

Multivariate Cluster Analysis Of The Mmpi-2 And Mmpi-2-Rf Scales In Spine Pain Patients With Financial Compensation: Characterization And Validation Of Chronic Pain Subgroups, Luis Aguerrevere

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Different psychosocial factors influence the experience and adaptation to pain. Previous cluster analytic studies using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2nd edition described psychologically different subgroups of pain patients that had been shown valuable in determining outcome. However, these studies had limited applicability to medico-legal pain populations because they did not use newly developed scales or describe important medico-legal factors that have large effects on symptom endorsement. Using three methods of clustering, the current investigation explored the subgroups that resulted when using all the MMPI-2 and the newly developed MMPI-2-RF (Restructured Form) scales on a large and well-described population of medico-legal …

Geology & Geochemistry Of The Kingman Feldspar, Rare Metals And Wagon Bow Pegmatites, Tj Brown

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the Mojave Pegmatite district, located in northwestern AZ, numerous pegmatites intrude syn- to post-collisional Paleoproterozoic granitic rocks. The slightly older Cerbat plutons are associated with the suturing of the Mojave and Yavapai terranes whereas Aquarius granites were emplaced during the Yavapai Orogeny as the sutured terranes docked with North America. A detailed study of 5 pegmatites shows that they are zoned with composite cores and contain REE minerals characteristic of NYF pegmatites. However, they exhibit characteristics atypical for NYF pegmatites including F depletion, white microcline, an absence of columbite and, in the Rare Metals pegmatite, have muscovite and beryl. …

Characterization And Fluid Flow Properties Of Frozen Rock Systems Of Umiat Oil Field, Alaska, Vasil Godabrelidze Dec 2010

Characterization And Fluid Flow Properties Of Frozen Rock Systems Of Umiat Oil Field, Alaska, Vasil Godabrelidze

Engineering

The Umiat field, located in northwestern Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Arctic Ocean, potentially contains the largest accumulation of oil in Naval Petroleum Reserve No.4. Most of the oil is found within the permafrost zone. The main oil-producing zones in the Umiat field are marine sandstones in the Grandstand Formation of the Cretaceous Nanushuk group. Although the temperatures are close to freezing, the oil in the Umiat field remains unfrozen due to its very high API gravity. However, this results in a very unique pore space containing frozen water and oil, posing a particular challenge to characterization and …

Latency And Distortion Compensation In Augmented Environments Using Electromagnetic Trackers, Henry Himberg Dec 2010

Latency And Distortion Compensation In Augmented Environments Using Electromagnetic Trackers, Henry Himberg

Theses and Dissertations

Augmented reality (AR) systems are often used to superimpose virtual objects or information on a scene to improve situational awareness. Delays in the display system or inaccurate registration of objects destroy the sense of immersion a user experiences when using AR systems. AC electromagnetic trackers are ideally for these applications when combined with head orientation prediction to compensate for display system delays. Unfortunately, these trackers do not perform well in environments that contain conductive or ferrous materials due to magnetic field distortion without expensive calibration techniques. In our work we focus on both the prediction and distortion compensation aspects of …

Ontogenetic Considerations In The Trophic Level Of Commercial Groundfish Species In The Gulf Of Alaska, Jennifer Marie Marsh

Fisheries

"Trends in trophic level (TL) estimates of commercial fishery catches are used as ecosystem-based indicators for sustainability, but these estimates often do not incorporate species-specific interannual and ontogenetic feeding patterns. This study provides a finer resolution of ontogenetic and temporal variations in the trophic position of four groundfish species in the central Gulf of Alaska (GOA), walleye pollock (Theragra chaleogramma), Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), arrowtooth flounder (Atheresthes stomias), and Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis), using stable isotope analysis to assess TL and diet source. Samples were collected from the northeastern side of Kodiak Island, Alaska, from 2000-2004. Several Analysis of Covariance …

Scanning Laser Registration And Structural Energy Density Based Active Structural Acoustic Control, Daniel Alan Manwill Dec 2010

Scanning Laser Registration And Structural Energy Density Based Active Structural Acoustic Control, Daniel Alan Manwill

Theses and Dissertations

To simplify the measurement of energy-based structural metrics, a general registration process for the scanning laser doppler vibrometer (SLDV) has been developed. Existing registration techniques, also known as pose estimation or position registration, suffer from mathematical complexity, instrument specificity, and the need for correct optimization initialization. These difficulties have been addressed through development of a general linear laser model and hybrid registration algorithm. These are applicable to any SLDV and allow the registration problem to be solved using straightforward mathematics. Additionally, the hybrid registration algorithm eliminates the need for correct optimization initialization by separating the optimization process from solution selection. …

Left To My Own Devices, Charisse Celino

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

I compose work from what may be considered debris. There is a history contained within these items that I want to redefine. Materials dictate and inform the direction of my work. The search and discovery of these objects is intuitive. Acquiring the piece(s) ties into my inspiration of its possible new function. My objective is to encourage others to notice the everyday and see the aesthetic value of these objects. Often they are organized into a grid. Whether taking an individual object or making multiples into a single image, I am altering the function of these items, reordering them and …

Reconciling Motor Performance Indicators From Theoretical Calculations And Laboratory Tests, Himanshu Hirlekar, Badrul H. Chowdhury, Stephen Ruffing Dec 2010

Reconciling Motor Performance Indicators From Theoretical Calculations And Laboratory Tests, Himanshu Hirlekar, Badrul H. Chowdhury, Stephen Ruffing

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quite often because of the complexity in the design of large industrial motors, the theoretical motor parameter calculations do not match actual results from laboratory tests. Thus, it becomes important to predict the amount of discrepancy between the two methods to develop confidence in the motor parameter calculations. This paper discusses the development of multiple artificial neural networks (ANNs) designed to predict the ratios of measured parameters to calculated parameters, given the geometry and construction of the motor. These ratios represent correction factors which can be applied to the values calculated from the theoretical program, which, in this case, is …

Relating Deep Magmatic Processes To Eruptive Behavior At Arc Volcanoes Through An Analysis Of Deep Seismicity, Ophelia A. George

Geosciences

"In this thesis, the seismicity at depths greater than 15 km beneath two sets of volcanic centers, the Klyuchevskoy Volcanic Group (KVG), Russia and Mount Spurr, Alaska is examined. In both regions, a pulsing pattern of deep seismicity is observed with many cycles following eruptive activity or periods of unrest. The bulk of the seismicity beneath the KVG is comprised of long-period events many of which share a similar appearance. Cross correlation of the waveforms for events occurring between 12/24/2007 and 12/31/2008 show a number of event families occurring over long time spans. New relative locations for these families which …

H-Ns Binding And Repression Of The Ctx Promoter In Vibrio Cholerae, Emily A. Stonehouse, Robin R. Hulbert, Melinda B. Nye, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Expression of the ctx and tcp genes, which encode cholera toxin and the toxin coregulated pilus, the Vibrio cholerae O1 virulence determinants having the largest contribution to cholera disease, is repressed by the nucleoid-associated protein H-NS and activated by the AraC-like transcriptional regulator ToxT. To elucidate the molecular mechanism by which H-NS controls transcription of the ctxAB operon, H-NS repression and binding were characterized by using a promoter truncation series, gel mobility shift assays, and DNase I footprinting. Promoter regions found to be important for H-NS repression correlated with in vitro binding. Four main H-NS binding regions are present at …

Population Structure And The Mating System Of Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta Caretta), Janne Thoft Nielsen

Open Access Dissertations

Studies of the maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) demonstrate that females are philopatric, returning to nest in the region where they hatched. Eleven genetic stocks of maternal lineages have been identified in the Atlantic Ocean. An analysis of the conventionally-used 380 bp of the mitochondrial control region of a sample of individuals from the genetic stock of loggerheads in Mexico (N = 175) revealed 13 haplotypes. When a longer sequence read of 815 bp was analyzed, 17 haplotypes were uncovered. In the genetic stock of loggerheads in northwestern Florida (N = 25), three haplotypes were …

Caregiver Behaviors As Moderators Of The Relation Between Children's Joint Attention Skills And Subsequent Language In An At-Risk Sample, Dolores Farhat Dec 2010

Caregiver Behaviors As Moderators Of The Relation Between Children's Joint Attention Skills And Subsequent Language In An At-Risk Sample, Dolores Farhat

Open Access Dissertations

The positive link between children's joint attention skills and subsequent language outcomes is well established. There is also abundant evidence that responsive caregiver behaviors lead to optimal language outcomes. Though directive behaviors are generally considered detrimental to children's growth, specific types of directive behaviors which extend or build upon a child's behavior are thought to promote children's learning. No study has examined how caregiver behaviors interact with children's joint attention skills to affect subsequent language. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to examine how three different caregiver behaviors (Responsiveness, Supportiveness, and Intrusiveness) measured at 18 months moderated the …
