We present a search for the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy √s=1.96TeV. This search was conducted within the framework of the R parity conserving minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, assuming the stop decays dominantly to a lepton, a sneutrino, and a bottom quark. We searched for events with two oppositely-charged leptons, at least one jet, and missing transverse energy in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1fb⊃-1 collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab experiment. No significant evidence of a stop quark signal was found. Exclusion …

Dendroaspis Natriuretic Peptide For Treatment Of Cancer, David L. Vesely Nov 2010

Dendroaspis Natriuretic Peptide For Treatment Of Cancer, David L. Vesely

USF Patents

Disclosed is a method of inhibiting the growth of a cancer cell using Dendroaspis natriuretic peptide (DNP), isolated from the Green Mamba snake venom with similar structure to ANP, with or without four cardiac natriuretic peptides i.e., atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), vessel dilator, long acting natriuretic peptide (LANP), and kaliuretic peptide. Dose-response curves revealed a significant (p<0.0001) decrease in human glioblastoma cells with each ten-fold increase in concentration from 1 μM to 100 μM of four of the cardiac peptide hormones. There was an 75%, 68%, 67%, and 65% elimination within 24 hours of glioblastoma cells secondary to vessel dilator, kaliuretic peptide, ANP, and LANP, respectively (p<0.0001) while DNP had no significant effect at 1 μM (2% decrease), and 10 μM (7%), but 100 μM caused a (17%) decrease (p<0.05). Three days after treatment with these peptide hormones, the cancer cells began to proliferate again. These same hormones decreased DNA synthesis from 65% to 87% (p<0.00001).

Nucleosome Structure Incorporated Histone Acetylation Site Prediction In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Chen Zhao, Hui Liu, Youping Deng, Tieliu Shu Nov 2010

Nucleosome Structure Incorporated Histone Acetylation Site Prediction In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Chen Zhao, Hui Liu, Youping Deng, Tieliu Shu

Faculty Publications

Background

Acetylation is a crucial post-translational modification for histones, and plays a key role in gene expression regulation. Due to limited data and lack of a clear acetylation consensus sequence, a few researches have focused on prediction of lysine acetylation sites. Several systematic prediction studies have been conducted for human and yeast, but less for Arabidopsis thaliana.

Results

Concerning the insufficient observation on acetylation site, we analyzed contributions of the peptide-alignment-based distance definition and 3D structure factors in acetylation prediction. We found that traditional structure contributes little to acetylation site prediction. Identified acetylation sites of histones in Arabidopsis thaliana …

Identifying Functional Relationships Within Sets Of Co-Expressed Genes By Combining Upstream Regulatory Motif Analysis And Gene Expression Information, Viktor Martyanov, Robert H. Gross Nov 2010

Identifying Functional Relationships Within Sets Of Co-Expressed Genes By Combining Upstream Regulatory Motif Analysis And Gene Expression Information, Viktor Martyanov, Robert H. Gross

Dartmouth Scholarship

Existing clustering approaches for microarray data do not adequately differentiate between subsets of co-expressed genes. We devised a novel approach that integrates expression and sequence data in order to generate functionally coherent and biologically meaningful subclusters of genes. Specifically, the approach clusters co-expressed genes on the basis of similar content and distributions of predicted statistically significant sequence motifs in their upstream regions.

Dye Sensitized Solar Cell With Conventionally Annealed And Post-Hydrothermally Treated Nanocrystalline Semiconductor Oxide Tio2 Derived From Sol-Gel Process, Akhmad Herman Yuwono, Badrul Munir, Alfian Ferdiansyah, Arif Rahman, Wulandari Handini

Makara Journal of Technology

Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is one of the very promising alternative renewable energy sources to anticipate the declination in the fossil fuel reserves in the next few decades and to make use of the abundance of intensive sunlight energy in tropical countries like Indonesia. In the present study, TiO2 nanoparticles of different nanocrystallinity was synthesized via sol−gel process with various water to inorganic precursor ratio (Rw) of 0.85, 2.00 and 3.50 upon sol preparation, followed with subsequent drying, conventional annealing and post-hydrothermal treatments. The resulting nanoparticles were integrated into the DSSC prototype and sensitized with an organic dye made of …

Separation Study of Titanomagnetite Fe3-xTixO4 from Natural Sand at Indramayu, West Java. Titanomagnetite FeTiO4 has been obtained from metal sand which is separated from natural sand at Indramayu using magnetic separator with the magnetic field 0,3 Tesla. This method can improve titanomagnetite content from 32% to 63,6%. According to X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and data processing by general structure analyses system (GSAS) with χ2= 1,454 and Wrp = 0,1142 as correction factor of the peak to peak intensities, we conclude that χ2 about 0 and Wrp aproximately 10%. It indicates the datas with the error merely 0,1 can be accepted. Furthermore, …

The Role Of Auditors In Fraud Detection, Prevention And Reporting In Nigeria, Ayobami Oluwagbemiga Oyinlola Nov 2010

The Role Of Auditors In Fraud Detection, Prevention And Reporting In Nigeria, Ayobami Oluwagbemiga Oyinlola

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract This study investigates the role of auditors in the detection, prevention and reporting of fraud. Data were obtained from 184 respondents in Nigeria. The findings revealed that the respondents are very concerned about the problem of fraud. In addition, the respondents placed very high expectation on auditors’ duties on fraud prevention and detection. This perception is in contrast with the stated primary objective of an audit, as stipulated in ISA 200, which merely required auditors to form an opinion on the financial statements, but not of fraud detection. Keywords: Auditors, fraud, detection, prevention

Economics And Psychology: Exciting Interface In The Emerging Market Milieu, Sudhanva V. Char, Cherry Collier

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

The business of economics has always been the study of the dynamics of human behavior. It deals with how individuals, businesses or any group of people craft decisions concerning use of scarce resources in the hope of maximizing happiness. Economics is preoccupied with the study of decision-making under pressure of limited wherewithal, for which purpose it puts faith in rationality. However, postulating rationality for all times is a tall demand and somewhat naïve like in "animal spirits" and "irrational exuberance." Also what exactly is rational or for the greater good, is not always crystal clear. This paper surveys the Economics-Psychology …

Act 1: The Ocean Smell (1624-1938), James Smith Allen

A Privileged Past

The first act of "A Privileged Past" recounts the history of four families – the Allens of Manchester, Massachusetts; the Roomes of New York, New York; the Kruegers of Newark, New Jersey; and the Smiths also of Newark – since their arrival from Europe (the first two in the seventeenth century, the latter two in the nineteenth). These people brought with them distinct ethnic identities, which helped define the communities they joined, and in some cases led, as immigrants to the new world. Their experiences across and by the Atlantic Ocean are captured by this chapter’s prevailing figure of speech, …
