Nautical Knowledge: An Experimental Analysis Of The Influence Of Public Relations Strategies In Safe Boating Communication, Emily N. Guilfoil Nov 2010

Nautical Knowledge: An Experimental Analysis Of The Influence Of Public Relations Strategies In Safe Boating Communication, Emily N. Guilfoil

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the effect of public relations message strategies on beliefs, attitudes, and behavioral intentions of individuals regarding boater safety. An experiment was conducted using seven safety messages. Specifically, Fishbein and Ajzen’s (1975) theory of reasoned action and J.E. Grunig’s (1997) situational theory of publics were used to examine the communication effects of message strategies proposed by Hazleton and Long’s (1988) public relations process model. The findings of this study support the predictions of the theory of reasoned action—that salient beliefs predict attitude toward behavior and attitude toward behavior and subjective norm predict behavioral intent. Of the three attitude items measured—attitude …

Impact Of Corner Radius On Cold-Formed Steel Member Strength, V. Zeinoddini, B. W. Schafer Nov 2010

Impact Of Corner Radius On Cold-Formed Steel Member Strength, V. Zeinoddini, B. W. Schafer

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The objectives of this paper are to expl ore (a) how corners of cold-formed steel members are included or ignored in current design methods, and (b) the effectiveness of recent proposals for modifying the strength prediction for local buckling to account for corners. The imp act of round corners is examined on the behavior and strength of isolated elements and on full members using material and geometric nonlinear collapse analysis with shell finite elements in ABAQUS. Comparisons between the available methods and the nonlinear finite element analysis are completed to explore the regimes in which the methods are accurate, as …

Study On The Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Angle Tension Members, R. Padmapriya, S. Kandasamy Nov 2010

Study On The Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Angle Tension Members, R. Padmapriya, S. Kandasamy

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Cold-formed steel tension members with bolted end connections are frequently used in a variety of structures such as trusses, transmission towers etc. Among all the shapes, angles are widely used. When angle sections are connected with gusset plates and eccentrically loaded, their ultimate load- carrying capacity is influenced by the effect of shear lag. This paper presents the details of an experimental and numerical investigation with a primary objective of studying the effect of shear lag on cold-formed steel single and double angles subjected to tension. Seventy-two single plain and lipped angles made from thicknesses 2,3 and 4 mm connected …

Genetic Evaluation Of American Shad Alosa Sapidissima Restoration Success In James River, Virginia, Aaron Aunins Nov 2010

Genetic Evaluation Of American Shad Alosa Sapidissima Restoration Success In James River, Virginia, Aaron Aunins

Theses and Dissertations

The American shad Alosa sapidissima has experienced severe declines throughout its native range due to habitat degradation, fragmentation, and over-fishing. Hatchery supplementation is often used for stock restoration, but the effects of supplementation on population structure and genetic diversity are rarely assessed. This study employed molecular markers to evaluate how supplementation of the James River American shad population with Pamunkey River origin larvae since 1994 has impacted genetic diversity and population structure. Population genetic parameters of other major Chesapeake Bay tributaries (Susquehanna, Rappahannock, Potomac, and Nanticoke) also were characterized. Prior to stocking, the James and Pamunkey populations exhibited subtle genetic …

Improvements To The Fire Performance Of Light Gauge Steel Floor Systems, B. Baleshan, M. Mahendran Nov 2010

Improvements To The Fire Performance Of Light Gauge Steel Floor Systems, B. Baleshan, M. Mahendran

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Light gauge steel frame (LSF) struct ures are increasingly used in commercial and residential build ings because of their non- combustibility, dimensional stability and ease of installation. A common application is in floor-ceiling systems. The LSF floor-ceiling systems must be designed to serv e as fire compartment boundaries and provide adequate fire resistance. Fire-rated floor-ceiling assemblies have been increasingly used in buildings. However, limited research has been undertaken in the past and hence a thorough understanding of their fire resistance behaviour is not available. Recently a new composite floor-ceilin g system has been developed to provide higher fire rating. But …

Chronic Spontaneous Activity Generated In The Somata Of Primary Nociceptors Is Associated With Pain-Related Behavior After Spinal Cord Injury, Supinder S Bedi, Qing Yang, Robyn J Crook, Junhui Du, Zizhen Wu, Harvey M Fishman, Raymond J Grill, Susan M Carlton, Edgar T Walters Nov 2010

Chronic Spontaneous Activity Generated In The Somata Of Primary Nociceptors Is Associated With Pain-Related Behavior After Spinal Cord Injury, Supinder S Bedi, Qing Yang, Robyn J Crook, Junhui Du, Zizhen Wu, Harvey M Fishman, Raymond J Grill, Susan M Carlton, Edgar T Walters

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Mechanisms underlying chronic pain that develops after spinal cord injury (SCI) are incompletely understood. Most research on SCI pain mechanisms has focused on neuronal alterations within pain pathways at spinal and supraspinal levels associated with inflammation and glial activation. These events might also impact central processes of primary sensory neurons, triggering in nociceptors a hyperexcitable state and spontaneous activity (SA) that drive behavioral hypersensitivity and pain. SCI can sensitize peripheral fibers of nociceptors and promote peripheral SA, but whether these effects are driven by extrinsic alterations in surrounding tissue or are intrinsic to the nociceptor, and whether similar SA occurs …

Mimo Channel Spatial Covariance Estimation: Analysis Using A Closed-Form Model, Yanling Yang Nov 2010

Mimo Channel Spatial Covariance Estimation: Analysis Using A Closed-Form Model, Yanling Yang

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple-input Multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems allow increased spectral efficiency and therefore promise significant improvement in performance. However, because of the rapid variation in channel state information (CSI) in networks with mobile nodes or scatterers, it is difficult both to maintain high communication performance and to create channel models that effectively represent the time-varying behavior of the channels. The spatial covariance of the MIMO channel describes the average power gain on each transmit-receive antenna pair as well as the correlation between the complex link gains and thus provides critical information for understanding the performance of the system and for creating …

Learning About Odes Using Interactive Online Modules, Kuva Jacobs, David Panton

CODEE Journal

This paper discusses the development and implementation of a set of online teaching and learning modules for the modeling and solution of simple linear Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). The paper describes how constructivist principles are used in the development of these modules and how in-built assessment has been used to enhance student learning. A discussion of the module structure is provided with particular emphasis on the concept of the module walk-through. Modules developed for the classical ODE problems of the simple pendulum and the mass on a spring are used to illustrate these module constructs. The paper concludes with a …

Challenging The Accuracy Of A Single-Test Lactate Threshold Protocol In Collegiate Rowers, Erica A. Soma, Michael M. Lockard, Stasinos Stavrianeas Nov 2010

Challenging The Accuracy Of A Single-Test Lactate Threshold Protocol In Collegiate Rowers, Erica A. Soma, Michael M. Lockard, Stasinos Stavrianeas

International Journal of Exercise Science

Elite rowers use lactate threshold (LT) estimates as a basis for training intensity in order to achieve the greatest training volume. For convenience, LT is usually determined in a maximal LT/VO2max test. This simultaneous test is problematic because it requires a large power increment, which may not give the most accurate LT. PURPOSE: To challenge the validity of a simultaneous LT/VO2max test to estimate LT in rowers. METHODS: Collegiate rowers (n=20, 16F and 4M, age 19.3±1.3 years, height 171.5±7.1 cm, weight 70±14 kg, VO2max 44.6±5.5 ml•kg-1•min-1) performed two LT tests. Participants completed an …

Racial/Ethnic Differences In Bone Mineral Density Of Young Adults, Linda D. Wilkin, Tristan D. Sims, Matthew C. Jackson, Bryan L. Haddock Nov 2010

Racial/Ethnic Differences In Bone Mineral Density Of Young Adults, Linda D. Wilkin, Tristan D. Sims, Matthew C. Jackson, Bryan L. Haddock

International Journal of Exercise Science

An estimated 1.5 million people suffer a bone disease-related fracture every year. Most work investigating bone mineral density (BMD) focuses on post-menopausal females but a report from the Surgeon General in 2004 stated that of particular concern are men, racial and ethnic minorities, poor individuals, individuals with disabilities, and individuals living in rural areas. The purpose of this study was to examine the racial/ethnic differences in bone mineral density of young adults and to investigate any correlations with variables suggested to influence BMD. BMD was assessed at a younger age than most studies based on the assumption that osteoporosis is …

Type Of Encouragement Influences Peak Muscle Force In College-Age Women, Ruth M. Amagliani, John K. Petrella, Alan P. Jung

International Journal of Exercise Science

Purpose: To investigate if the type of encouragement during a maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) had an influence on peak muscle force in strength-trained versus untrained collegiate women. Methods: Eleven strength-trained (20.4 + 1 yr) and twelve untrained (20.8 + 1 yr) women participated in three, five-second MVICs of seated knee extension. The three trials consisted of verbal only encouragement, verbal + visual encouragement, and verbal + pain avoidance encouragement. In all three trials, the participants received the same verbal encouragement. Trials were counterbalanced to minimize any possible order effects. A repeated measure ANOVA was used to analyze data. Any …

The Decompensating Pediatric Inpatient Simulation Scenarios, Aisha Davis, Pavan P. Zaveri

E-Learning Modules

Introduction: In July of 2009, Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC) Hospitalist and Emergency Department (ED) educators collaborated to create and implement unique simulation scenarios for trainees rotating on the pediatric hospitalist teams. The goal of this educational intervention is to teach and allow rehearsal of an approach to the unstable patient across three scenarios. Trainees use this high-fidelity, low-risksimulation to apply targeted clinical reasoning and their initial assessment and management strategies to core clinical problems. The three scenarios included in this resource cover altered mental status and seizure, respiratory distress and anaphylaxis, and refractory status asthmaticus, respectively.

Methods:This resource …

Halo Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry: Design, Instrumentation, And Performance, Miao Wang Nov 2010

Halo Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry: Design, Instrumentation, And Performance, Miao Wang

Theses and Dissertations

New ion trap mass spectrometry (ITMS) instrumentation, the toroidal IT and halo IT, were developed to meet the significant growth in on-site analysis applications. The miniature toroidal IT mass analyzer was operated with radio frequency (RF) trapping voltages of 3 kVp-p or less. Despite its reduced dimensions, it has roughly the same ion trapping capacity as conventional 3D quadrupole ITs. Unit-mass resolved spectra for n-butylbenzene, xenon, and naphthalene were obtained. The desired linear mass scale was obtained using conventional mass-selective instability scan combined with resonance ejection. The halo IT was also based on toroidal trapping geometry and microfabrication technology, consisting …

Endogenous Sirnas And Noncoding Rna-Derived Small Rnas Are Expressed In Adult Mouse Hippocampus And Are Up-Regulated In Olfactory Discrimination Training., Neil Smalheiser, G Lugli, Jyothi Thimmapuram, E.H. Cook, J Larson

Cyber Center Publications

We previously proposed that endogenous siRNAs may regulate synaptic plasticity and long-term gene expression in the mammalian brain. Here, a hippocampal-dependent task was employed in which adult mice were trained to execute a nose-poke in a port containing one of two simultaneously present odors in order to obtain a reward. Mice demonstrating olfactory discrimination training were compared to pseudo-training and nose-poke control groups; size-selected hippocampal RNA was subjected to Illumina deep sequencing. Sequences that aligned uniquely and exactly to the genome without uncertain nucleotide assignments, within exons or introns of MGI annotated genes, were examined further. The data confirm that …
