High Tech Vanity: Efficient Design With The Help Of Technology, Cassandra Krul Nov 2010

High Tech Vanity: Efficient Design With The Help Of Technology, Cassandra Krul

Theses

On a daily basis, humans execute multiple tasks. With technology becoming more prevalent in our everyday lives, we find it creeping into these rituals. This makes it easier to accomplish many tasks at once. The root of the success of technology is its ability to allow us to communicate in ways beyond a simple conversation. That is to say, means of communication are constantly being reinvented and developed.

With these developments, people are finding creative ways of implementing technology into everyday tasks For example, many of us start our day by waking up and taking a shower. Following that shower, …

Educators’ Beliefs About And Approaches To The Evaluation Of Student Writing, Vanessa Minick Nov 2010

Educators’ Beliefs About And Approaches To The Evaluation Of Student Writing, Vanessa Minick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The overarching purpose of this study was to describe educators’ beliefs about the evaluation of student writing. The inquiry was guided by the following research questions: (a) what are the differences in the ways in which educators approach evaluating student writing? (b) how do educators evaluate the effectiveness of their evaluation methods for judging the quality of students’ writing samples? and (c) what factors impact the evaluation decisions of educators? The following variables were considered: public and private school settings, evaluation methods, and educators’ beliefs about evaluating writing. In order to gain perspective of the current status of the methods …

John Mccone And The Cuban Missile Crisis, Christopher M. Heist Nov 2010

John Mccone And The Cuban Missile Crisis, Christopher M. Heist

Masters Theses

My thesis focused on John McCone and his role during the Cuban Missile Crisis. On this subject, I will examine John McCone's efforts from May to September 1962 to understand the Soviet buildup in Cuba, pushing President John F. Kennedy for more reconnaissance of the island to aid this effort. During the crisis in October 1962, McCone was one of the main officials responsible for briefing the Kennedy administration on the Soviet efforts in Cuba, where he sided with the members of the cabinet pushing for an air strike and invasion to remove the missiles. Following the crisis, McCone continued …

One Principal's Educational Leadership In A Rural And Low-Performing Middle School In Virginia: A Case Study, Clara Lynn Fletcher Sodat Nov 2010

One Principal's Educational Leadership In A Rural And Low-Performing Middle School In Virginia: A Case Study, Clara Lynn Fletcher Sodat

Theses and Dissertations

This case study examined the leadership practices of one middle school principal in a low-performing rural school in Virginia. The experienced principal participant was in his first year of leadership at the school; he had led other low-performing schools to improved achievement that resulted in earning state accreditation as well as meeting federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) student proficiency targets. The focus school had failed to meet AYP for five consecutive years. The qualitative research design for this study included in-depth, semi-structured interviews with teachers, the principal, the assistant principal, and the principal’s supervisor; a total of 18 interviews were …

Mass Transfer And Gdl Electric Resistance In Pem Fuel Cells, Lin Wang Nov 2010

Mass Transfer And Gdl Electric Resistance In Pem Fuel Cells, Lin Wang

Open Access Dissertations

Many modeling studies have been carried out to simulate the current distribution across the channel and shoulder direction in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. However the modeling results do not show agreement on the current density distribution. At the same time, no experimental measurement result of current density distribution across the channel and the shoulder direction is available to testify the modeling studies. Hence in this work, an experiment was conducted to separately measure the current densities under the channel and the shoulder in a PEM fuel cell by using the specially designed membrane electrode assemblies. The experimental …

Meg And Fmri Fusion For Non-Linear Estimation Of Neural And Bold Signal Changes, Sergey M. Plis, Vince D. Calhoun, Michael Patrick Weisend, Tom Eichele, Terran D.R. Lane

Wright State Research Institute Publications

The combined analysis of magnetoencephalography (MEG)/electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measurements can lead to improvement in the description of the dynamical and spatial properties of brain activity. In this paper we empirically demonstrate this improvement using simulated and recorded task related MEG and fMRI activity. Neural activity estimates were derived using a dynamic Bayesian network with continuous real valued parameters by means of a sequential Monte Carlo technique. In synthetic data, we show that MEG and fMRI fusion improves estimation of the indirectly observed neural activity and smooths tracking of the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) response. In …

Medical Schools In Sub-Saharan Africa, Fitzhugh Mullan, Seble Frehywot, Francis Omaswa, Eric Buch, Candice Chen, S. Ryan Greysen, Tenagne W. Haile-Mariam, +30 Additional Authors Nov 2010

Medical Schools In Sub-Saharan Africa, Fitzhugh Mullan, Seble Frehywot, Francis Omaswa, Eric Buch, Candice Chen, S. Ryan Greysen, Tenagne W. Haile-Mariam, +30 Additional Authors

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Small numbers of graduates from few medical schools, and emigration of graduates to other countries, contribute to low physician presence in sub-Saharan Africa. The Sub-Saharan African Medical School Study examined the challenges, innovations, and emerging trends in medical education in the region. We identifi ed 168 medical schools; of the 146 surveyed, 105 (72%) responded. Findings from the study showed that countries are prioritising medical education scale-up as part of health-system strengthening, and we identifi ed many innovations in premedical preparation, teambased education, and creative use of scarce research support. The study also drew attention to ubiquitous faculty shortages in …
