An appeal against the decision by the Jerusalem District Court whereby the State’s request to declare the appellant eligible for extradition to the United States, and this in order that he be criminally prosecuted for serious sex offenses against minors which he allegedly committed in the 1980s, must be granted. Until 1984, when he moved to Israel, the appellant was a resident and citizen …

Antioxidant Status, C-Reactive Protein And Iron Status In Patients With Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Dhia A. Taha, Imad A-J Thanoon

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of acute pulmonary tuberculosis and the effect of drug therapy on markers of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde [MDA] and total antioxidant status [TAS]), C-reactive protein (CRP) and iron body status indices. Methods:Forty patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis from the Advisory Clinic for Chest and Respiratory Diseases in Mosul City, Iraq, were included in this study, with fifty healthy age and sex matched subjects as controls. Assessment of serum concentrations of MDA, TAS, CRP, serum iron, total iron binding capacity, transferring saturation percent and ferritin were done for both patients and controls. …

Comparative Study Of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring And Clinic Blood Pressure Measurement In The Risk Assessment And Management Of Hypertension, Hatem Farhan, Mona Al-Hasani, Mohamed Sallam, Mansour Nov 2010

Comparative Study Of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring And Clinic Blood Pressure Measurement In The Risk Assessment And Management Of Hypertension, Hatem Farhan, Mona Al-Hasani, Mohamed Sallam, Mansour

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: Blood pressure (BP) measurements taken in a physician’s clinic do not represent readings throughout the day. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) overcomes this problem by providing multiple readings with minimal interference with the patient’s daily activities. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the value of ABPM in risk assessment and management of hypertension compared to office measurements. Methods: A total of 104 consecutive hypertensive patients were retrospectively studied from January 2007 to December 2009. The following data were gathered: 1) clinic BP measurements; 2) routine blood test results; 3) electrocardiography, echocardiography, and 4) 24-hour ABPM. Results: The …

Imaging Of Small Bowel Obstruction Following Gastric Bypass Surgery For Morbid Obesity : A Retrospective Review, Rashid Al-Sukaiti, Lawrence Stein, Nicholas Mesurolle, Benoit, Giovanni P. Artho

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: This study is a single institution retrospective evaluation of imaging findings of small bowel obstruction (SBO) after retrocolic antegastric Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity. Methods: The radiological database of 490 patients who underwent gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity from January 2001-2005 at the Royal Victoria Hospital McGill University Health Center was searched for SBO complications related to the procedure. There were 22 cases of small bowel obstruction related to the procedure. Ten patients had abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (CT) scans, 12 patients had upper gastrointestinal (UGI) and small bowel follow through (SBFT). Results: Among 22 …

The Diagnosis And Management Of Severe Hypercalcaemia : A Simplified Approach - Report Of Five Cases, Omayma T. Elshafie, Nicholas Jy Woodhouse Nov 2010

The Diagnosis And Management Of Severe Hypercalcaemia : A Simplified Approach - Report Of Five Cases, Omayma T. Elshafie, Nicholas Jy Woodhouse

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Hypercalcaemia, a common medical problem, can be a manifestation of various diseases. When severe, it can represent a medical emergency. Correct diagnosis is important to prevent unnecessary investigations and parathyroidectomies. We here present five patients with severe hypercalcaemia, most misdiagnosed for months or years before being referred to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Oman. We report how clinical examination, evaluation of fasting serum calcium, phosphate, creatinine and 24-hour urine calcium levels together with a review of their radiographics predicted the pathophysiology of the disorder and guided investigative procedures before hormone assays results were available.

Rejoinder To Cunningham Et Al., "Dewey, Women And Weirdoes", Terry Fitzgerald Nov 2010

Rejoinder To Cunningham Et Al., "Dewey, Women And Weirdoes", Terry Fitzgerald

Education and Culture

It is good to see Cunningham et al. including F. Matthias Alexander in their list of positive influences in John Dewey’s life. However, I believe Cunningham’s essay, ‘Shared explorations of body-mind: the reciprocal influences of Dewey and F.M. Alexander’, falls short in its acknowledgement of Alexander and in one important aspect is incorrect. In this response, I hope to set the record straight and briefly illustrate how the reciprocal influences of these two educators have continued to grow in the near-century since they first met.

A Model Of Dewey’S Moral Imagination For Service Learning: Theoretical Explorations And Implications For Practice In Higher Education, Zhuran You, A. G. Rud

Education and Culture

Abstract: While John Dewey’s learning theory has been widely credited as the essential theoretical underpinnings of service-learning, lesser attention has been paid to his concept of moral imagination regarding its immense potentials in nurturing college students’ moral growth in service-learning. This article explores Dewey’s framework of moral imagination and its implications for moral education in college service-learning programs to construct a moral imagination model that could enrich current service-learning theory and practice. The key components and structure of the model are delineated in details and the relevant examples of moral imagination in service-learning are also discussed.

John Dewey On History Education And The Historical Method, Thomas D. Fallace Nov 2010

John Dewey On History Education And The Historical Method, Thomas D. Fallace

Education and Culture

This essay constructs a comprehensive view of Dewey’s approach to history, the historical method, and history education. Drawing on Dewey’s approach to the subject at the University of Chicago Laboratory School (1896-1904), Dewey's chapter on the historical method in Logic: A Theory of Inquiry (1938), and a critique of Dewey’s philosophy of history that appeared in the American Historical Review and the published response to this attack by Dewey’s colleagues (1954), the author argues that Dewey consistently approached history in genetic and historicist terms.

Moving Towards A Complete Molecular Framework Of The Nematoda: A Focus On The Enoplida And Early-Branching Clades, Holly M. Bik, P. John D. Lambshead, W. Kelley Thomas, David H. Lunt Nov 2010

Moving Towards A Complete Molecular Framework Of The Nematoda: A Focus On The Enoplida And Early-Branching Clades, Holly M. Bik, P. John D. Lambshead, W. Kelley Thomas, David H. Lunt

Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)

Background: The subclass Enoplia (Phylum Nematoda) is purported to be the earliest branching clade amongst all nematode taxa, yet the deep phylogeny of this important lineage remains elusive. Free-living marine species within the order Enoplida play prominent roles in marine ecosystems, but previous Molecular phylogenies have provided only the briefest evolutionary insights; this study aimed to firmly resolve internal relationships within the hyper diverse but poorly understood Enoplida. In addition, we revisited the Molecular framework of the Nematoda using a rigorous phylogenetic approach in order to investigate patterns of early splits amongst the oldest lineages (Dorylaimia and Enoplia). Results: Morphological …
