Regulation Of Proteome Maintenance Gene Expression By Activators Of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Α, Hongzu Ren, Beena Vallanat, Holly M. Brown-Borg, Richard Currie, J. Christopher Corton

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

The nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) is activated by a large number of xenobiotic and hypolipidemic compounds called peroxisome proliferator chemicals (PPCs). One agonist of PPARα (WY-14,643) regulates responses in the mouse liver to chemical stress in part by altering expression of genes involved in proteome maintenance (PM) including protein chaperones in the heat shock protein (Hsp) family and proteasomal genes (Psm) involved in proteolysis. We hypothesized that other PPARα activators including diverse hypolipidemic and xenobiotic compounds also regulate PM genes in the rat and mouse liver. We examined the expression of PM genes in rat and mouse …

Model Checking Hierarchical Probabilistic Systems, Jun Sun, Songzheng Song, Yang Liu Nov 2010

Model Checking Hierarchical Probabilistic Systems, Jun Sun, Songzheng Song, Yang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Probabilistic modeling is important for random distributed algorithms, bio-systems or decision processes. Probabilistic model checking is a systematic way of analyzing finite-state probabilistic models. Existing probabilistic model checkers have been designed for simple systems without hierarchy. In this paper, we extend the PAT toolkit to support probabilistic model checking of hierarchical complex systems. We propose to use PCSP#, a combination of Hoare’s CSP with data and probability, to model such systems. In addition to temporal logic, we allow complex safety properties to be specified by non-probabilistic PCSP# model. Validity of the properties (with probability) is established by refinement checking. Furthermore, …

Model Checking A Model Checker: A Code Contract Combined Approach, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Bin Cheng Nov 2010

Model Checking A Model Checker: A Code Contract Combined Approach, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Bin Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Model checkers, like any complex software, are subject to bugs. Unlike ordinary software, model checkers are often used to verify safety critical systems. Their correctness is thus vital. Verifying model checkers is extremely challenging because they are always complicated in logic and highly optimized. In this work, we propose a code contract combined approach for checking model checkers and apply it to a home-grown model checker PAT. In this approach, we firstly embed programming contracts (i.e., pre/post-conditions and invariants) into its source code, which can capture correctness of model checking algorithms, underlying data structures, consistency between different model checking parameters, …

International Business Travel In The Global Economy, J.V. Beaverstock, B. Derudder, J. Faulconbridge, F. Witlox (Eds.), Terence Ping Ching Fan Nov 2010

International Business Travel In The Global Economy, J.V. Beaverstock, B. Derudder, J. Faulconbridge, F. Witlox (Eds.), Terence Ping Ching Fan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Business travel accounts for a disproportionately large share of revenue and profit to transport service providers, and is therefore an important topic. However, few studies on international travels focus squarely on business travellers because these individuals are inherently difficult to identify: they do not always travel in business cabins (p. 79) and it is increasingly difficult to quantify the duration and function of business trips as travellers build in extra time to allow for flight delays or for other leisure activities (p. 69). Scholars of transport studies, especially air transport specialists, geographers, sociologists, and to a lesser extent, marketers of …

Standardization Of Standard-Form Contracts: Competition And Contract Implications, Mark R. Patterson Nov 2010

Standardization Of Standard-Form Contracts: Competition And Contract Implications, Mark R. Patterson

William & Mary Law Review

Standard-form contracts are a common feature of commercial relationships because they offer the advantage of lower transaction costs. This advantage of standard contracts is increased when there is a second layer of standardization under which multiple firms agree on a standard contract. Trade associations and similar entities often effect standardization of this kind through collective agreement on a standard contract, sometimes under the aegis of state actors. Multifirm contract standardization can provide not only the usual transaction-cost advantages of standard-form contracts, but also increased competition among firms, because a standard contract makes comparison among firms’ offerings easier. But standardization among …

Deciding To Buy: Civil-Military Relations And Major Weapons Programs, Quentin E. Hodgson Mr. Nov 2010

Deciding To Buy: Civil-Military Relations And Major Weapons Programs, Quentin E. Hodgson Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The development and procurement of major weapons programs in the United States is a complex and often drawn-out process complicated by political considerations and often sharp disagreements over requirements and the merits of systems. Secretaries of Defense since Robert McNamara have sought to impose discipline on the process, with varying degrees of success. Conflicts between a Military Service and the civilian leadership are inevitable. A Service wants to develop the most advanced system to address its perceived need, whereas the Secretary of Defense must balance competing requirements across the Department of Defense. The military and the civilian leadership may also …

Movement Of Selected Nearshore Temperate Reef Fishes Along California's Central Coast, Leslie Jaye Longabach Nov 2010

Movement Of Selected Nearshore Temperate Reef Fishes Along California's Central Coast, Leslie Jaye Longabach

Master's Theses

Worldwide fisheries decline has spurred the utilization of new conservation and management approaches, including the implementation of marine reserves. The diversity of goals and expected outcomes should guide the marine reserve design process, coupled with a thorough understanding of the ecology of all species targeted for protection. Central California’s network of coastal marine protected areas (MPAs) was established in an environment of some uncertainty regarding the expected outcomes for temperate nearshore fish species, especially the Sebastes genus (rockfishes). Movement behavior of temperate reef-fishes plays an important role in the level of protection that a reserve will afford a species. Consistent …

The Impact Of Perceived Risk From Challenge Courses On Group Cohesion, Ryan R. Soares

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of perceived risk from high elements in a challenge course on group cohesion. Participants who have not participated in a challenge course will be selected from a First Year Experience cohort at a California State University (n=100). Six randomly selected teams of 12 to 17 people will participate in three and a half hour challenge course programs. Half of the groups completed only low elements, while the other half completed a combination of low and high elements. A pre, mid, and post test of the Group Cohesion Evaluation Questionnaire was …

Glorious Constructions: The Struggle To Preserve Salvation-Themed Visionary Art Environments, Molly Elaine Sheehan Nov 2010

Glorious Constructions: The Struggle To Preserve Salvation-Themed Visionary Art Environments, Molly Elaine Sheehan

Master's Theses

Salvation-themed art environments are a roadside rarity, built out of a strong visionary dedication to God, but the sites are disappearing simply because the work is misunderstood. The historiography on the subject is sparse, trending more toward coffee table books with big glossy pictures than real scholarly endeavors, but the consensus among all has been clear. The sites are a valuable part of the recent American cultural landscape, crossing several scholarly fields - art, architecture, and history - and uniting them into a cohesive preservation movement. On a series of trips to visit, see, and experience five of these sites, …

Balancing Liberty, Dignity, And Safety: The Impact Of Domestic Violence Lethality Screening, Margaret E. Johnson Nov 2010

Balancing Liberty, Dignity, And Safety: The Impact Of Domestic Violence Lethality Screening, Margaret E. Johnson

Cardozo Law Review

This Article undertakes the first ever analysis of the consequences of the justice and legal system's extensive use of lethality assessment tools for women subjected to abuse. An increasing number of states are now requiring their police, prosecutors, civil attorneys, advocates, service providers, and court personnel to assess women in order to obtain a score that indicates the woman's lethality risk because of domestic violence. The mandated danger assessment screen of all women subjected to violence focuses only on the risk of homicide and thereby limits the definition of what is domestic violence. In addition, the accompanying protocol for the …

Wills, Trusts, And Estates, J. Rodney Johnson

University of Richmond Law Review

The 2010 Session of the General Assembly enacted wills, trusts, and estates legislation (i) adopting the Uniform Power ofAttorney Act, (ii) passing emergency legislation for the construction of tax-oriented wills and trusts of persons who die during 2010 with documents drafted prior thereto, (iii) revising the small-estate statutes, and (iv) clarifying the burial power of attorney. In addition, there were six other enactments, and seven opinions from the Supreme Court of Virginia during the one-year period ending June 1, 2010 that present issues of interest in thisarea. This article reports on all of these legislative and judicial developments, along with …

Characterization And Development Of A Stroke-Induced Model Of Acquired Epilepsy In Organotypic Hippocampal Slice Cultures: Role Of The Cannabinoid Cb1 Receptors In Modulation Of Neuronal Excitation And Inhibition, Julie Ziobro Nov 2010

Characterization And Development Of A Stroke-Induced Model Of Acquired Epilepsy In Organotypic Hippocampal Slice Cultures: Role Of The Cannabinoid Cb1 Receptors In Modulation Of Neuronal Excitation And Inhibition, Julie Ziobro

Theses and Dissertations

Stroke is the most common cause of acquired epilepsy in persons 35 and older. The massive increase in extracellular glutamate during stroke causes a cascade of intracellular events that can lead to cell death or the molecular changes that initiate the development of epilepsy. In addition, many studies point to a modulatory role of the endocannabinoid system in controlling seizures. Animal models of stroke induced acquired epilepsy have been difficult to develop. Therefore, this dissertation was initiated to develop an organotypic hippocampal slice culture model of acquired epilepsy and examine the changes in distribution and function of the endogenous CB1 …

Chronic Gastritis And Helicobacter Pylori: A Histopathological Study Of Gastric Mucosal Biopsies, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Akbar Shah Hussainy

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

The aim of this study was to observe the histological features of chronic gastritis and associated effects due to Helicobacter pylori infection in 176 randomly selected antral biopsy specimens of chronic gastritis cases. The specimens were reviewed for the presence or absence of H.pylori. The activity (neutrophilic infiltration) of gastritis and the presence or absence of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) were also noted. Chi-square test (Pearson value) was used to analyze categorical variables. H.pylori was detected in 110 (62.5%) cases of chronic gastritis. There was a significant association between H.pylori infection and activity of chronic gastritis (p=0.002). Lymphoid aggregates were …

Neonatal Mortality And Prevalence Of Practices For Newborn Care In A Squatter Settlement Of Karachi, Pakistan: A Cross-Sectional Study., Afsheen Ayaz, Sarah Saleem Nov 2010

Neonatal Mortality And Prevalence Of Practices For Newborn Care In A Squatter Settlement Of Karachi, Pakistan: A Cross-Sectional Study., Afsheen Ayaz, Sarah Saleem

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: During the past two decades there has been a sustained decline in child and infant mortality, however neonatal mortality has remained relatively unchanged. Almost all neonatal deaths (99%) occur in developing countries, where the majority are delivered at homes. Evidence suggests that these deaths could be prevented by simple, inexpensive practices and interventions during the pregnancy, delivery and postnatal period. In Pakistan over the last decade extensive efforts have been made by the international donors and government to implement these practices. However, limited attempts have been made to explore if these efforts have made a difference at the grass …

This symposium highlighted the position of physical activity as one of the most important factors causally related to common non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and discussed the need for including physical activity in comprehensive prevention strategies and policies to combat the major NCDs. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity are all major risk factors for ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and several cancers, and physical inactivity globally ranks as the fourth leading risk factor for mortality. Despite the solid evidence that physical activity is related to several NCDs, stronger advocacy actions are required because physical activity is not viewed …

The Right To Voice Reprised, Christopher Slobogin Nov 2010

The Right To Voice Reprised, Christopher Slobogin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This article appears in a symposium issue of Seton Hall Law Review on courtroom epistemology. In Proving the Unprovable: The Role of Law, Science and Speculation in Adjudicating Culpability and Dangerousness, I argued that criminal defendants ought to be able to present speculative psychiatric testimony if the expert has followed a routinized evaluation process that addresses the relevant legal criterion, an argument based in part on the position that the Constitution can be read to entitle defendants to tell their exculpatory mental state stories. In a recent essay, Professor Lillquist takes aim at this latter rationale, which I called the …

First Amendment Based Copyright Misuse, David S. Olson Nov 2010

First Amendment Based Copyright Misuse, David S. Olson

William & Mary Law Review

We are at a crossroads with respect to the underdeveloped equitable defense of copyright misuse. The defense may go the way of its sibling, antitrust-based patent misuse, which seems to be in a state of inevitable decline. Or—if judges accept the proposal of this Article—courts could reinvigorate the copyright misuse defense to better protect First Amendment speech that is guaranteed by statute, but that is often chilled by copyright holders misusing their copyrights to control others’ speech. The Copyright Act serves First Amendment interests by encouraging authors to create works. But copyright law can also discourage the creation of new …
