Thermodynamic Based Modeling For Nonlinear Control Of Combustion Phasing In Hcci Engines, Joshua Bradley Bettis Jan 2010

Thermodynamic Based Modeling For Nonlinear Control Of Combustion Phasing In Hcci Engines, Joshua Bradley Bettis

Masters Theses

"Low temperature combustion modes, such as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), represent a promising means to increase the efficiency and significantly reduce the emissions of internal combustion engines. Implementation and control are difficult, however, due to the lack of an external combustion trigger. This thesis outlines a nonlinear control-oriented model of a single cylinder HCCI engine, which is physically based on a five state thermodynamic cycle. This model is aimed at capturing the behavior of an engine which utilizes fully vaporized gasoline-type fuels, exhaust gas recirculation and intake air heating in order to achieve HCCI operation. The onset of combustion, …

Energy-Efficient Task-Scheduling And Networking Protocols For Secure Wireless Networks, Sandeep Kolli Jan 2010

Energy-Efficient Task-Scheduling And Networking Protocols For Secure Wireless Networks, Sandeep Kolli

Masters Theses

"The performance of wireless networks is dependent on a number of factors including the available energy, energy-efficiency, data processing delay, transmission delay, routing decisions, security overhead, etc. Traditionally, due to limited resources, nodes were tasked with only collecting measurements and sending them to a base station or central unit for processing. With increased capabilities of microprocessors the data processing is pushed more toward network and its more capable nodes. This thesis focuses to virtualize the processing resources of the entire network and dynamically distribute processing steps along the routing path while optimizing performance. Additionally, a new multi-key encryption (MKE) scheme …

Optimisation Of An Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer System For Holographic Inscription Of Surface Patterns With Sub-Micron Resolution, Kevin Trainer, Kevin Wearen, Dimana Nazarova, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal Jan 2010

Optimisation Of An Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer System For Holographic Inscription Of Surface Patterns With Sub-Micron Resolution, Kevin Trainer, Kevin Wearen, Dimana Nazarova, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal

Articles

We describe the optimisation of the holographic patterning of sub-micrometer surface relief structures in an acrylamide-based photopolymer. A substantial improvement in the photoinduced surface relief resolution was achieved by altering the photopolymer chemical composition and by introducing a single step post recording thermal treatment of the layers. It was observed that, by optimisation of the chemical composition of the photopolymer layers, the maximum achievable spatial frequency increases from 200 l/mm to 550 l/mm. The improvement of the surface relief amplitude by alteration of the chemical composition is limited due to the fact that both decrease of the plasticiser and increase …

Medium Mediated Effects Increase Cell Killing In A Human Keratinocyte Cell Line Exposed To Solar Simulated Radiation, Fiona Lyng, Alanna Maguire, Brian Morrissey, James E. Walsh

Articles

Purpose: The objective of this study is to investigate whether cell culture medium is 40 a biologically relevant exposure medium that can be employed in non-ionising photobiological investigations. 42 Methods: The effect of solar simulated irradiation on cell culture medium and its ability to elicit cell death was studied. The role of reactive oxygen species (ROS), cell 44 secreted factors, and the contribution of individual components of the medium were investigated. 46 Results: Cell death was found to be primarily mediated through the formation of ROS via riboflavin photosensitisation and degradation in the cell culture medium. Phenol 48 red was …

Altered Mitochondrial Function And Genome Frequency Post Exposure To Γ-Radiation And Bystander Factors, Fiona Lyng, Sharon Nugent,, Carmel E. Mothersill,, Colin Seymour, Brendan Mcclean,, James E. J. Murphy

Articles

PURPOSE:

To further evaluate irregular mitochondrial function and mitochondrial genome damage induced by direct γ-irradiation and bystander factors in human keratinocyte (HPV-G) epithelial cells and hamster ovarian fibroblast (CHO-K1) cells. This is as a follow-up to our recent reports of γ-irradiation-induced loss of mitochondrial function and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage.

Mig-6 And Its Role In Regulating Adult Lung Epithelium, Sandra Bennett Jan 2010

Mig-6 And Its Role In Regulating Adult Lung Epithelium, Sandra Bennett

Masters

Through the use of developmental and knock out studies Mig-6 has been shown to have a role in development. It has also been shown to be a tumour suppressor gene. Little work has been done as yet looking at its role in the adult. This study examined the role of Mig-6 in the lung with the ultimate goal being to determine if the pulmonary phenotype due to Mig-6 ablation is due to a developmental programming or loss of function in the adult. This was investigated in two ways. 1. To investigate if knocking out Mig-6 in adult lung has an …

Pleiotrophin And Its Role In Regulating Haemopoietic Stem Cell Regeneration, Rebecca Smith Jan 2010

Pleiotrophin And Its Role In Regulating Haemopoietic Stem Cell Regeneration, Rebecca Smith

Masters

HSCs are cells that have the capacity to self renew, proliferate and differentiate, providing cells of the mature blood system throughout a lifetime. The concept of such a cell was first considered in 1961 subsequent to the injection of healthy marrow into a lethally irradiated recipient mouse which mediated the reconstitution of mature blood cells in the irradiated host(Till and Mc Culloch, 1961). This finding provided preliminary experimental evidence that all of the blood cells were derived from a single type of progenitor cell, also known as HSC. The majority of mature blood cells have a limited life span, red …

Continued Viability: A Review Of The Life Sciences Library At Indiana University In A Time Of Institutional Change And Proposed Branch Library Downsizing, J B. Hill, Brian Winterman

Faculty Scholarship

There has been a growing realization that academic libraries need to change to serve a new generation of learners and researchers. Efforts to enhance the "Main Library" on campus with extended hours, coffee shops, and information commons have created modern, user-friendly environments that support changing student needs and expectations.  Generally fewer resources have been given to upgrading smaller branch libraries. The need to modernize older spaces along with the availability of electronic collections, campus demands for classroom/lab space and financial pressures on libraries have prompted a rethinking of the role of branch libraries. Actively pursuing initiatives to re-envision library spaces …

The Tao Of Pleading: Do Twombly And Iqbal Matter Empirically?, Patricia W. Hatamyar Jan 2010

The Tao Of Pleading: Do Twombly And Iqbal Matter Empirically?, Patricia W. Hatamyar

American University Law Review

This article is an empirical study of the effect of Bell Atlantic Corp. vs. Twombly, 550 U.S. 544 (2007), and Ashcroft vs. Iqbal, 129 S. Ct. 1937 (2009), two recent Supreme Court cases that portend the decline of “notice pleading” in federal civil practice. The article analyzes how Twombly and Iqbal have begun to dismantle the regime of notice pleading by not only discarding the “no set of facts” standard of Conley vs. Gibson, 355 U.S. 41 (1957), but by changing or ignoring other principles that federal courts have followed for decades on 12(b)(6) motions. The statistical study then examines …

The Supreme Court's Increased Attention To The Law Of Lawyering: Mere Coincidence Or Something More? , Renee Newman Knake Jan 2010

The Supreme Court's Increased Attention To The Law Of Lawyering: Mere Coincidence Or Something More? , Renee Newman Knake

American University Law Review

The United States Supreme Court considered seventeen cases raising issues related to the role of attorneys and the practice of law during the 2009 Term. This body of cases represents a substantial departure from dockets in recent history, where typically the Court took up less than a handful of cases involving regulation of the legal profession. While some might consider the increased number of cases addressing the law of lawyering a mere coincidence, this article contends that something more is occurring. The Court’s decision to devote so much of its limited time to these matters is noteworthy not only for …

Developmental Assessment And Feedback Relieves Parenting Stress, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Melody A. Whiddon Jan 2010

Developmental Assessment And Feedback Relieves Parenting Stress, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Melody A. Whiddon

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Numerous studies have established that role stress experienced by parents has an impact on their perceptions of their child’s behavior, the quality of their parent-child interactions, and their child’s overall adjustment. Significant numbers of parents do experience the parenting role as stressful, often because they have concerns about whether their child’s behavior is within normal limits. Having seen parenting stress frequently while counseling parents and children, we reasoned that providing individualized developmental information to parents could reduce their parenting stress, and in turn result in positive consequences for parents and for children.

This article describes a brief intervention we developed, …

To evaluate the effective components of couple relationship education, 59 newlywed couples were randomly assigned to one of two couple relationship programs (CRE): (1) RELATE, which involved receiving feedback mono their relationship based on the on-line RELATE assessment; or (2) RELATE + Couple CARE, which was RELATE plus completing the 6 unit Couple CARE relationship skill training program. Relative to RELATE, RELATE + Couple CARE produced more improvement in couple communication, and high relationship satisfaction across the next 12 months in women. Men sustained high and similar relationship satisfaction in either condition. Skill training CRE has additional benefits for couples …

Cultural And Contextual Differentiation Of Mesoamerican Iconography In The Southwest/Northwest, Michael T. Searcy Jan 2010

Cultural And Contextual Differentiation Of Mesoamerican Iconography In The Southwest/Northwest, Michael T. Searcy

Faculty Publications

Ample research has documented the long-term interaction between Mesoamerica and the U.S. Southwest/Northwest Mexico (SW/NW). Nelson (2006:345) has used the phrase "Mesoamerican interaction markers" as a way to describe evidence of this contact in the SW/NW. He further defines these as "a variety of archaeological patterns that are reminiscent of Mesoamerican counterparts" including "objects, practices, and styles." Some of the interaction markers that have been studied at length are trade goods such as copper bells, macaws, shell, and iron pyrite mirrors (Bayman 2002; Bradley 1993; Ericson and Baugh 1993; Kelley 1966, 1995; Mathien 1993; McGuire 1993b; Nelson 2000; Riley 2005). …

Our Top 12 "Key Instructional Elements" That Help To Build An Excellent Lesson And High Quality Physical Education Program, Robert S. Christenson, David C. Barney

Faculty Publications

One of the most fundamental issues in teaching, arguably the biggest, is discovering the most effective lesson elements for each group of learners. This includes a solid curriculum, performance objectives, age-appropriate pedagogical ingredients, ability-level activities and assessments focused on measuring learning to create a great lesson. When these elements are blended artistically with a variety of classroom management skills, necessary equipment, instructional support resources, behavior management rules and high expectations in a nurturing environment, the teacher has created the best possible learning atmosphere for each individual student.

Below, the authors have identified twelve important instructional elements for teachers to incorporate …

The New Abridged Reporter's Privilege: Policies, Principles, And Pathological Perspectives, Erik Ugland Jan 2010

The New Abridged Reporter's Privilege: Policies, Principles, And Pathological Perspectives, Erik Ugland

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This Article contends that contemporary arguments about the reporter's privilege are increasingly situated within a divided framework in which protections for confidential and nonconfidential information are treated as separate interests that lack a shared theoretical justification. This is both a cause and consequence of a broader tendency among judges, legislators, journalists, and lawyers to emphasize policy-based conceptions of the privilege that are focused on case-specific calculations of harms and benefits, rather than principle-based conceptions focused on journalistic autonomy and the need for a structural separation of press and government. Policy arguments present the privilege as a narrow, utilitarian device for …
