Dna Barcoding And Morphometrics Of Stingless Bees (Apidae: Meliponinae) In Three Selected Forests In Kenya, Nelly Njeri Ndungu

All Master’s Theses

Stingless honeybee keeping is an income generating enterprise with an indirect potential of achieving the goal of forest and biodiversity conservation in Kenya. However, little information is available on species diversity and spatial distribution of stingless bees in Kenya. This study describes variations of stingless bee samples collected from Arabuko Sokoke, Mwingi and Kakamega forests, ranging from low, middle to high altitude, respectively using morphometrics and DNA barcoding. Fourteen morphometric characters were measured to determine the extent of morphological variation of stingless bees in Kenya. In addition, mitochondrial DNA sequences data were generated using Cytochrome c Oxidase I (COI) in accordance …

A Qualitative Approach To Understanding Audience's Perceptions Of Creativity In Online Advertising, Andrew Mcstay Jan 2010

A Qualitative Approach To Understanding Audience's Perceptions Of Creativity In Online Advertising, Andrew Mcstay

The Qualitative Report

In this paper I seek to inquire upon audience's perceptions of creativity in online advertising - a heretofore poorly understood area. This paper initially outlines current academic understanding of creativity in online advertising, mainly derived from quantitative assessments. It then advances a qualitative methodology including diary-interviews and ethnographic online interviews across 41 participants. My starting point is a critique of the most comprehensive conceptual intervention in the area of advertising creativity - Smith and Yang's (2004) typology of "relevance" and "divergence". I assess to what extent this typology emerges from my participants' data. Two key features of relevance - contextual …

Differential Effects Of Personality Disorders On Treatment Outcome For Adult Patients With Adhd, Emily M. Tomer Jan 2010

Differential Effects Of Personality Disorders On Treatment Outcome For Adult Patients With Adhd, Emily M. Tomer

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Approximately seven million adults meet the diagnostic criteria for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the prevalence rate is between 3.3 and 5.3%; however, these are likely underestimates because the diagnostic criteria are based on those originally devised for children, aged four to 17 years. Not only does this underdiagnosis cause a problem in making an accurate diagnosis, but also the high rate (65-89%) of psychiatric comorbidity complicates the situation, resulting in poorer treatment outcome for individuals with comorbid diagnoses, when compared with those who have no comorbid diagnoses. Therefore, the current study was designed to examine whether or not the …

A Case Study: Use Of Applied Behavior Analysis With An Austistic Adolescent, Evan Jaffe Jan 2010

A Case Study: Use Of Applied Behavior Analysis With An Austistic Adolescent, Evan Jaffe

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Socialization between individuals is an important characteristic in human development. In individuals with autism, there is a profound deficit with social skills and with social reciprocity. Interventions and techniques are utilized to help enhance these skills. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects that Applied Behavior Analysis using discrete trials can have on the ability to elicit a spontaneous greeting in various settings by an adolescent male diagnosed with autism. This study analyzed data collected during a ten week intervention program. Behavior ratings reflected some uneven progress over the ten weeks, but significant improvements in the targeted …

A Qualitative Study Examining Factors Related To Treatment Adherence In Persons With Long Qt Syndrome, Alison B. Steinhauser

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an electrophysiological disorder of the heart affecting as many as 1 in 2,000 persons. LQTS can result in potentially catastrophic and fatal arrhythmias in infants, children, adolescents, and adults. Maintaining adherence to treatment can decrease these negative outcomes and result in favorable quality of life in this population. The present study utilized a qualitative research design to examine and understand nonadherent and adherent behaviors in persons with LQTS. This study was part of a larger study and used a sample from an existing online LQTS user group message board consisting of 780 international members. A …

It’S Not A Small World After All: Regulating Obesity Globally, Eloisa Rodriguez-Dod Jan 2010

It’S Not A Small World After All: Regulating Obesity Globally, Eloisa Rodriguez-Dod

Faculty Publications

The rate of obesity and overweight among the world population has increased dramatically over the past several years in both adults and children. Childhood obesity is a critical health care concern. There have been well-publicized efforts to regulate children‘s obesity both in the U.S. and abroad through such measures as mandated nutritional school lunch programs.

This article focuses, however, on a less examined area of regulation—the recent worldwide efforts to curb obesity among adults. The regulations discussed in this article include measures proposed or adopted by either administrative agencies or legislative bodies, whether on a local or national level. The …

The Precedent Of Pretrial Release At The Icty: A Road Better Left Less Traveled, Megan A. Fairlie Jan 2010

The Precedent Of Pretrial Release At The Icty: A Road Better Left Less Traveled, Megan A. Fairlie

Faculty Publications

In August 2009 the International Criminal Court (ICC) granted the interim release of the Congolese alleged warlord, Jean-Pierre Bemba, who has been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Central African Republic. This decision left Bemba poised to become the first ICC accused ever to enjoy pre-trial release. Of comparable significance, because the decision draws upon relevant jurisprudence from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), it highlights the potentially powerful influence of ICTY precedent upon a growing field of international and internationalized criminal justice institutions. The new Bemba release decision is just one in …

Federal Prosecution Of State And Local Officials Using Honest Services Mail Fraud: Where's The Line?, George E.B. Holding, Dennis M. Duffy, John Stuart Bruce Jan 2010

Federal Prosecution Of State And Local Officials Using Honest Services Mail Fraud: Where's The Line?, George E.B. Holding, Dennis M. Duffy, John Stuart Bruce

Campbell Law Review

Although there is little dispute that the mail fraud statute has become a valuable part of a federal prosecutor's arsenal, for years legal scholars have debated the extent to which the mail fraud statute should be used to prosecute corrupt state and local officials. In recent years, largely in response to the large number of high profile honest services fraud prosecutions, even members of the mainstream news media are beginning to seek guidance regarding the definition of honest services mail fraud. As noted by Professor George Brown, though the controversy over whether the national government should be responsible for prosecuting …

Challenges And Opportunities For The Tax Professional Guiding Closely-Held Entities: 2009 & 2010 Regulatory And Judicial Developments Impacting Fourth Circuit Tax Practitioners, Rose L. Bailey

Campbell Law Review

When framing adequate tax advice to protect oneself from preparer penalties under sometimes ambiguous or unsettled tax law, or when trying to affect your best appellate argument or direct a strategic audit litigation path, there can be no doubt of the importance of considering judicial precedent developments in all of these paths. To that end, under the discretion of this Author, a selection of relevant administrative regulations and rulings as well as judicial authority rendered in 2009 through spring 2010 are contained in this Article to cover significant income taxation developments impacting certain closely-held entities. Closely-held entities are considered, for …

Textualist Canons: Cabining Rules Or Predilective Tools, Stephen M. Durden Jan 2010

Textualist Canons: Cabining Rules Or Predilective Tools, Stephen M. Durden

Campbell Law Review

This Article uses canons of construction to demonstrate that textualism, particularly plain language or plain meaning textualism, cannot be applied without the use of non-textual personal choices. But, this Article does not seek to demonstrate that interpreting the Constitution requires ignoring the text of the Constitution; nor does this Article seek to demonstrate that textualist approaches lack relevance or value. Rather, this Article seeks to demonstrate that textualism cannot create rules that avoid personal predilections and does not create neutral principles or eliminate predilective interpretation. In order to accomplish this goal, this Article reviews a variety of canons of construction …

Cell Phone - A "Weapon" Of Mass Discretion, Mark L. Mayakis Jan 2010

Cell Phone - A "Weapon" Of Mass Discretion, Mark L. Mayakis

Campbell Law Review

Initially, this Comment will discuss the development of the search incident to arrest exception from the warrant requirement and how this exception has been generally defined and judicially interpreted. The next section will include a discussion of how the search incident to arrest exception has been applied to searches of the content stored within pagers. This Comment will then explain how modern cell phones have created difficulties for courts applying the search incident to arrest exception, causing these courts to diverge down two different lines of reasoning, ultimately reaching opposite conclusions. Finally, this Comment will reiterate the necessity that the …

Constitutional Protection For Non-Media Defendants: Should There Be A Distinction Between You And Larry King?, Rebecca Phillips

Campbell Law Review

This Comment considers the current law, contemplates the rapid growth of technology and proposes an answer to the following two questions: Should there be a distinction between media and nonmedia defendants? If so, who should be offered more protection: You or Larry King? To answer these questions, Part I summarizes traditional and current defamation law and the First Amendment protections that have been meted out by the courts. Part II discusses the court decisions that have noted whether a distinction between media and nonmedia defendants is meritorious and critiques those conclusions in light of the development of defamation law. Part …

The Art Of Caring: Woman And Restorative Justice, Peggy Lobb Jan 2010

The Art Of Caring: Woman And Restorative Justice, Peggy Lobb

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The process of restorative justice involves the caring compassion of others by providing support for the peaceful resolution of the conflict. The term restorative justice is used to describe a justice practice that has been in existence for hundreds of years in many indigenous communities. Recently, it is emerging in modern criminal justice systems as a way to obtain fair reparation for the victim and to offer an opportunity for the victim and the offender to mediate and reconcile after the offense to restore balance and peace to the community. The process involves the participation of the victim, offender, and …

A Needs Assessment For Continuing Education Of Federal Wildlife Damage Management Professionals, Jessica L. Tegt, Phillip D. Jones, Ben C. West Jan 2010

A Needs Assessment For Continuing Education Of Federal Wildlife Damage Management Professionals, Jessica L. Tegt, Phillip D. Jones, Ben C. West

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The complexity of wildlife damage management requires professionals to continually acquire new knowledge and skills that can be obtained through continuing education. Current literature suggests that wildlife damage management personnel are not receiving adequate training either as new professionals entering the fi eld or through continuing training as existing professionals. To better understand the continuing education needs of wildlife damage managers, we conducted a nationwide, on-line needs assessment survey for supervisory personnel of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services program (hereafter, WS). The goal of our survey was to identify gaps in continuing …

Optimal Design-Space Exploration Of Streaming Applications, Shobana Padmanabhan, Yixin Chen, Roger D. Chamberlain Jan 2010

Optimal Design-Space Exploration Of Streaming Applications, Shobana Padmanabhan, Yixin Chen, Roger D. Chamberlain

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Many embedded and scientific applications are frequently pipelined asynchronously and deployed on architecturally diverse systems to meet performance requirements and resource constraints. We call such pipelined applications streaming applications. Typically, there are several design parameters in the algorithms and architectures used that, when customized, impact the tradeoff between different metrics of application performance as well as resource utilization. Automatic exploration of this design space is the goal of this research. When using architecturally diverse systems to accelerate streaming applications, the design search space is often complex. We present a global optimization framework comprising a novel domain-specific variation of branch-and-bound that …

Identité Et Langue Française Chez Azouz Begag Et Chahdortt Djavann, Nehal Abuelata Jan 2010

Identité Et Langue Française Chez Azouz Begag Et Chahdortt Djavann, Nehal Abuelata

Master's Theses

This thesis addresses the problematics of identity construction through the acquisition of the French language for immigrants living in France. More specifically, it examines the impact French language acquisition has had and still has on the identity of children of Maghrebian descent and, more generally, its influence on the identity of non-francophone immigrants who arrived in France as adults by examining the novels of two francophone authors: Azouz Begag and Chahdortt Djavann. Whereas the former is a French writer of Algerian descent, a "Beur," the latter is an Iranian-born writer who emigrated to France as an adult. In addition, this …

A Phonetic, Phonological, And Morphosyntactic Analysis Of The Mara Language, Michelle Arden Jan 2010

A Phonetic, Phonological, And Morphosyntactic Analysis Of The Mara Language, Michelle Arden

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a linguistic analysis of the Mara language, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in northwest Myanmar and in neighboring districts of India. Data has been gathered through interviews with a native speaker. The analysis includes a full phonetic segment inventory of the dialect and a phonological analysis of contrastive sounds and contextual variants. Sound files embedded in the document illustrate the phonetic system. Mara's distinctive phonetic features include the loss of word-final consonants, a set of voiceless sonorants, pre- and post- aspirated nasals, and lowered and unlowered vowel pairs. The morphosyntax of Mara pronominal words demonstrates a split-ergative case …
