Perception Of Accents And Dialects In Adults And Infants, Joseph Patrick Butler Jan 2010

Perception Of Accents And Dialects In Adults And Infants, Joseph Patrick Butler

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis has been undertaken with the purpose of investigating how adult speech processing systems are affected by. and how they cope with, the presence of different regional and foreign accents in speech, and to investigate the developmental origins of adult accent perception capabilities. Experiments 1 to 4 were designed to investigate the long term effects of exposure to different accents, and whether short term adaptation to an accent was possible, using a lexical decision task. The results demonstrated an effect of accent familiarity but no short term adaptation was evident. Experiments 5 to 7 investigated the short term effects …

Communicating Marine Environmental Health: Connecting Science, Social And Policy Values, Rebecca Louise Jefferson Jan 2010

Communicating Marine Environmental Health: Connecting Science, Social And Policy Values, Rebecca Louise Jefferson

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Human activities are degrading marine ecosystems and undermining the ecological functions and processes which provide valued goods and services. European and UK marine policy developments aim to implement the Ecosystem Approach to support better management of activities and maintain the health of regional seas. Current public perceptions of the UK marine environment are overwhelmingly negative, creating a barrier to engaging society with marine environmental issues and policy. This thesis conducts a study of the attributes of a suite of 72 UK marine species to identify those which contribute most to marine ecological health. The findings show that structurally complex species …

Session Texts, Martin Shaw

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Welcome to this, the beginning of the year programme. Glad you found us! I think we may be in for even more rain over the weekend. Over the programme we will study seven main stories and their relationship to initiatory rites-of-passage. A core of you will go on to undergo the wilderness fast itself I am going to lay some introductory ground over the next couple of hours - on both initiation and myth - and touch on our first story. The stories we will explore over the year are thick with paradox - they are not moral allegories in …

A Narrative In Relief: The Historiography Of English Modern Painting (1910-1915), From The 1910s To The 1950s, Carol Frances Brand Jan 2010

A Narrative In Relief: The Historiography Of English Modern Painting (1910-1915), From The 1910s To The 1950s, Carol Frances Brand

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The groups of painters in England who experimented with new visual expressions of modernity between 1910 and 1915 are the subject of this historiographical research. More precisely, the accounts of Vorticism, Bloomsbury post-Impressionism and the modern art of painters associated with Sickert, (principally the Camden Town Group), have been critically examined over a forty year period in order to trace the narrative of their place in contemporary art criticism and their entry into histories of what soon became the recent past. This textually-based methodology has produced an insight into the forces acting upon the critical reception of a particular period …

Visualising 'The Waste Land': Discovering A Praxis Of Adaptation, Sally Waterman Jan 2010

Visualising 'The Waste Land': Discovering A Praxis Of Adaptation, Sally Waterman

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research examines the issues and visual processes that arise in the production of self-representations derived from literary texts. The construction of a series of photographic and video installations drawing upon T. S Eliot’s poem 'The Waste Land' (1922) allowed for the exploration and analysis of how literature functions as a device to represent autobiographical experience within my media arts practice. The study considered the relevance and usage of the literary source in relation to specific adaptation procedures, in terms of what complexities were encountered and how these were understood. Whilst orthodox film adaptation provided a theoretical framework for initial …

Fields are understood in the context of this research to be largely constituted out of the expert …

Amergent Music: Behavior And Becoming In Technoetic & Media Arts, Norbert F. Herber Jan 2010

Amergent Music: Behavior And Becoming In Technoetic & Media Arts, Norbert F. Herber

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Technoetic and media arts are environments of mediated interaction and emergence, where meaning is negotiated by individuals through a personal examination and experience—or becoming—within the mediated space. This thesis examines these environments from a musical perspective and considers how sound functions as an analog to this becoming. Five distinct, original musical works explore the possibilities as to how the emergent dynamics of mediated, interactive exchange can be leveraged towards the construction of musical sound. In the context of this research, becoming can be understood relative to Henri Bergson’s description of the appearance of reality—something that is making or unmaking but …

Participation As Media: A Compositional System For Staging Participation With Reflective Scenography, Karin Sondergaard Jan 2010

Participation As Media: A Compositional System For Staging Participation With Reflective Scenography, Karin Sondergaard

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The practice-led research develops a compositional system for staging participation within reflective scenographies, and suggests an artistic concept of 'participation as media', which propose the participatory involvement as compositional material in itself. The research takes a starting point in the author's expert practice as a performer and director, and identifies key compositional problems from analysis of previous productions of participatory artworks. The practice-led research processes were organised into two laboratory events, a series of method investigations, and the production of two participatory installation artworks Mirror-Zone-Site and Zen- Sofa Arrangement. The approach is to rethink theatre as a complex communicational system …

Inter-Continental Patterns In The Fine-Scale Spatial Ecology Of Rain Forest Termites, Olivia Ingrid Scholtz Jan 2010

Inter-Continental Patterns In The Fine-Scale Spatial Ecology Of Rain Forest Termites, Olivia Ingrid Scholtz

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

In this thesis I describe fine-scale spatial patterns in rain forest termites, from the colony to the assemblage level, sampled from one hectare plots in Central African and South East Asian lowland rain forest. By so doing the ecological interactions that structure this functionally important and abundant soil community were identified. The African termite assemblage, dominated by soil-feeding termites, saturated the upper soil profile (collected from 90% of soil pits). In contrast termites were collected from <50% of soil pits in Asia, with this difference reflecting the lower species densities and abundances of soil-feeding termites in Asian forests. Territoriality and inter-specific competition was shown to be important between colonies of soil-feeding species in the African plot. The termite assemblages were spatially associated with several environmental properties. However these could not explain the spatial patterns in the functional components of the assemblages. Wood-feeding termites were highly patchily distributed, due to the heterogeneous nature of their food material, but also due to possible competitive interactions for this. Humus-feeding termites were homogenously structured, due to the continuous nature of soil as their feeding and nesting material. True soil-feeding termites, unique to the African assemblage, were heterogeneously distributed despite the equally continuous nature of their feeding and nesting material. This structure may arise from facilitative interactions, such as co-operative defence against ant predation which may be intense in African systems, or through the transfer of soil material at different stages of decomposition. Competition for space is apparent in both regions, both at the colony level among soil-feeding genera, and between aggregations of functional groups. Positive and negative biotic interactions, operating at various spatial and functional scales, appear to be important in influencing how assemblage composition is spatially structured. If indeed facilitation is important in maintaining the taxonomic and functional diversity in termite assemblages, it would be valuable to confirm the mechanism(s) that drives this (i.e. predation and/or food transfer), as these may then influence ecosystem stability.

Application Of Fractional Calculus To Rainfall-Streamflow Modelling, Martin Borthwick Jan 2010

Application Of Fractional Calculus To Rainfall-Streamflow Modelling, Martin Borthwick

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

There is evidence that hydrologic systems exhibit memory processes that may be represented by fractional order systems. A new theory is developed in this work that generalises the classical unit hydrograph technique for the rainfall-runoff transformation. The theory is based upon a fractional order linear deterministic systems approach subject to an initial condition and is taken to apply to the entire rainfallstreamflow transformation (i.e. including baseflow). The general equation for a cascade of time-lagged linear reservoirs of fractional order subject to a constant initialisation function is derived, and is shown to be a form of fractional relaxation model. Dooge's (1959) …

The Physiological And Molecular Characteristics Of Chemically Induced Abiotic Stress Resistant Mutants Of Cauliflower (Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis), Fazal Hadi Jan 2010

The Physiological And Molecular Characteristics Of Chemically Induced Abiotic Stress Resistant Mutants Of Cauliflower (Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis), Fazal Hadi

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

N-nitroso-N-ethyleurea (NEU) and N-nitroso-N-methyleurea (NMU) induced mutants and control plants had been maintained in in-vitro condition for 3 years by continuous sub-culturing and screened 2 generations for resistant mutants selection. In this study highly resistant mutants were regenerated and assessed by leaf discs assay for drought, salt and frost resistance to confirm the persistence of mutation over generations of subculture. Assessment was carried out using mannitol (drought stress), NaCl (salt stress) and freezing (frost stress). Cold-acclimated and non-acclimated leaves were assessed for frost resistance. Results confirmed the persistence of mutations in clones with enhanced tolerance levels to stresses over control …

An Evaluation Of The Relative Influences Of Elevated Temperature And Ocean Acidification On Processes Influencing The Distribution Of Intertidal Barnacles, Helen Sarah Findlay Jan 2010

An Evaluation Of The Relative Influences Of Elevated Temperature And Ocean Acidification On Processes Influencing The Distribution Of Intertidal Barnacles, Helen Sarah Findlay

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Ocean acidification and climate change are occurring as a result of anthropogenic release of carbon dioxide (C02) into the atmosphere. Changes in climate and ocean chemistry are occurring concomitantly and at a faster rate than previously recorded in Earth's history, yet little is understood about how they will influence the population dynamics and ecology of many marine organisms. The barnacle Semibalanus balanoides is a major space occupier on rocky shores in northern Europe and hence changes in its population ecology can have a broad influence on other species. An intertidal high CO2 microcosm system was developed in order to determine …

Transformation Of Wave Shape And Spatial Distribution Of Wave Overtopping Water Over A Coastal Structure, Zhong Peng Jan 2010

Transformation Of Wave Shape And Spatial Distribution Of Wave Overtopping Water Over A Coastal Structure, Zhong Peng

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This work investigates the transformation of wave shapes and the landward spatial distribution of overtopping water over coastal structures by experimental data and a numerical model based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and Volume of Fluid (VOF) surface capturing scheme (RANS-VOF). The aim of this study is to understand the transformation of wave shapes and the landward spatial distribution of overtopping water in the presence of coastal structures. This work provides new insights on the role of wave skewness and asymmetry on the breakwaters stability and sediment transport around the structure and on the beaches behind it. Also …

A Biophysical Model Of The Role Of The Outer Hair Cell In Cochlear Nonlinearity, Beibei Jiang Jan 2010

A Biophysical Model Of The Role Of The Outer Hair Cell In Cochlear Nonlinearity, Beibei Jiang

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

It has been observed that the response characteristics of the basilar membrane in normal living cochleae are both frequency and level-sensitive (Robles & Ruggero 2001). The quality factor of the tuning curve is large at low sound levels and decreases as the sound level increases, and the peak of the tuning curve moves towards lower frequencies as the sound level increases. The current study proposes a nonlinear cochlear model that responds adaptively to the incoming sounds via feedback control arising from the mechanical attributes of the cochlear partition. These attributes are dependent on the membrane potential of the outer hair …

Twig Dances: Improvisation Performance As Ecological Practice, Malaika Sarco-Thomas Jan 2010

Twig Dances: Improvisation Performance As Ecological Practice, Malaika Sarco-Thomas

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

ecology by analyzing data collected from a series of experiments in improvisation. Conducted in a number of locations in Europe and Asia, these experiments examine the usefulness of improvisation performance practices to notions of “ecology” and common understandings of humans’ relationships to our environment. Using “ecology” to describe an investigation of interrelationship as well as a commitment to act with an awareness of one’s actions in the social, mental and natural spheres discussed by Felix Guattari (2000), I outline ways contemporary improvisation practices can facilitate this investigation. To do this I draw on my own experience as a dancer at …

An Exploration Into How Students With Dyslexia Identify With Their Condition, With Particular Reference To The Tensions Which Surround Public And Private Perceptions Of Dyslexia, Deborah A Shenton Jan 2010

An Exploration Into How Students With Dyslexia Identify With Their Condition, With Particular Reference To The Tensions Which Surround Public And Private Perceptions Of Dyslexia, Deborah A Shenton

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis, discusses the implications of the social and private constructions of dyslexia for the individual with dyslexia and the dyslexic identity. In view of the difficulties inherent in higher education this study interviews people with dyslexia who successfully entered degree courses at university. It explores their experiences in an effort to gain an understanding of how people with dyslexia form an identity. Issues surrounding 'dyslexia' have increasingly focused on its credibility as a 'genuine' medical and disabling condition. The social expectations of the condition and the differing social and medical models of conditions warranting the label 'disability' have complicated …

Traces, Boundaries, Surfaces: An Investigation Through Art Practice Of Institutional Sites With Particular Reference To A Former Lunatic Asylum, Sarah Bennett Jan 2010

Traces, Boundaries, Surfaces: An Investigation Through Art Practice Of Institutional Sites With Particular Reference To A Former Lunatic Asylum, Sarah Bennett

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This doctoral research project by art practice examines a former site of exclusion, a nineteenth-century county pauper lunatic asylum, in particular its methods of containment and coercion. It involves an initial unearthing of narratives relating to the site's histories, including its recent redevelopment as a gated residential community, and consideration of other similar institutional settings. An exploration is subsequently developed through appropriation and interrogation of spatial and durational processes involved in selected mechanisms of control, and the impact of their repetition on those present, constituting the core of this practice-based research, and evidenced in the artworks arising from the enquiry. …

The Habitual Eccentricities Of The Solons Of Staffordshire: An Investigation Of The Circumstances Surrounding The Parliamentary Enquiry Into The Ill-Treatment Of Mrs Eliza Price Of Brierley Hill, 1845, David Cox Jan 2010

The Habitual Eccentricities Of The Solons Of Staffordshire: An Investigation Of The Circumstances Surrounding The Parliamentary Enquiry Into The Ill-Treatment Of Mrs Eliza Price Of Brierley Hill, 1845, David Cox

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This article investigates the circumstances surrounding a dramatic petition read out in the House of Commons in the late spring of 1845 which detailed the alleged ill-treatment of a heavily pregnant young married woman from Brierley Hill, Staffordshire by two parish constables acting upon the instructions of a county magistrate. What began as a minor squabble in two competing provincial magistrates' courts in the rapidly urbanizing Black Country resulted in a Parliamentary Enquiry and quickly escalated into a nationally aired debate on the capability and legality of the methods used by both the provincial magistracy and police to arrest, detain …

Purdy: The First Step On The Road Towards Assisted Suicide, Laura Sayer Jan 2010

Purdy: The First Step On The Road Towards Assisted Suicide, Laura Sayer

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This article considers how likely it is that English law will be amended in the near future to provide legal recognition and acceptance of assisted suicide in light of the 2009 House of Lords decision in Purdy. The extent to which Purdy has acted as a catalyst to generate formal legislative amendment is explored in the light of recent attempts to achieve a change in the law. Within this context the underlying and conflicting arguments of those in support and against the legalisation of assisted suicide are examined.

Supply Chains And Porous Boundaries: The Disaggregation Of Legal Services, Milton C. Regan, Palmer T. Heenan Jan 2010

Supply Chains And Porous Boundaries: The Disaggregation Of Legal Services, Milton C. Regan, Palmer T. Heenan

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The economic downturn has had significant effects on law firms, and is causing many of them to rethink some basic assumptions about how they operate. In important respects, however, the downturn has simply intensified the effects of some deeper trends that preceded it, which are likely to continue after any recovery that may occur.

This paper explores one of these trends, which is corporate client insistence that law firms “disaggregate” their services into discrete tasks that can be delegated to the least costly providers who can perform them. With advances in communications technology, there is increasing likelihood that some of …
