Phocine Distemper Virus Induced Demyelination In The Spinal Cord Of Infected Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina), Thomas Siemens
Phocine Distemper Virus Induced Demyelination In The Spinal Cord Of Infected Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina), Thomas Siemens
All Theses And Dissertations
Phocine Distemper Virus (PDV) is a Morbillivirus that has been responsible for the death of approximately 40,000 phocid seals in the last three decades. The most commonly reported pathology is virally induced demyelination of the cerebrum and brainstem which leaves axons bare and limits their conductivity of action potentials. While these conditions have been studied at length, there is little mention of spinal cord involvement. This study aims to determine whether demyelination found in the brainstem continues into the cervical spinal cord. The results indicate that demyelination in the cervical spinal cord does not occur alongside the brainstem. It is …

The industrialization of the channels and scale of communication has led some well-meaning reformers to try to regulate the ability of powerful private actors to leverage economic inequality into political inequality, particularly in the area of campaign finance. Such reform efforts are ostensibly intended to further the deliberative democratic ideal of rational, informed public decision making by preventing well-funded private interests from improperly influencing democratic debate and, by extension, political outcomes. This Article examines empirical findings in political science, psychology, and marketing and argues that, in the context of contemporary American society, the normative principles of deliberative democracy and formal …

I would like to thank the organizers for inviting me to deliver some remarks this morning. By way of background, I am not a historian or genocide scholar, but a law professor with an interest in comparative law and religion. Comparative law and religion is a relatively new field. It explores how different legal regimes reflect, and influence, the relationships that religious communities have with the state and with each other. My recent work compares Islamic and Christian conceptions of law, a subject that has engaged Muslims and Christians since their first encounters in the seventh century.

Meeting Students’ Demand For Models Of Good Legal Writing, Patricia Grande Montana
Meeting Students’ Demand For Models Of Good Legal Writing, Patricia Grande Montana

(Excerpt)
First-year legal writing students always plead for model examples of the types of writing we teach. Though most legal writing texts include an appendix of sample legal documents, the students invariably ask for more. They insist that a multitude of samples are needed to fully grasp the structure and organizational approach that is expected of them. Their reasons for wanting models of good legal writing are not without merit. Interoffice memoranda, trial and appellate briefs, as well as the other kinds of legal documents we teach in the first-year writing curriculum are unlike anything our law students have previously …
That Guy's A Batterer!: A Scarlet Letter Approach To Domestic Violence In The Information Age, Elaine M. Chiu
That Guy's A Batterer!: A Scarlet Letter Approach To Domestic Violence In The Information Age, Elaine M. Chiu
Faculty Publications
Despite the remarkable reliance on the Internet as a source of information, we have yet to fully take advantage of it in our movement against domestic violence. Information is used as a weapon in the battle against domestic violence in several limited ways. Yet there is still more we can do with information and, specifically, the Internet, in combating domestic violence. The Scarlet Letter proposal seeks to empower potential victims of domestic violence with information so that they themselves can make choices that will avoid years of suffering and abuse. The idea is to allow public access to the data …

America's fantasy of a post-racial society was shattered on July 16,2009, when a white police officer arrested Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, a well-respected African-American academic, in his own home. Our historical racial fissure was widened. Once again, our thoughts were plagued with tortured images of our system of racialized law enforcement: the torture of Abner Louima, the beating of Rodney King, the killing of Amadou Diallo. Predictably, Americans became further polarized, as they simultaneously blamed and defended responses to racism.
In what was perceived by some as a dramatic and unanticipated turn of events, and perceived by others as …

Fiqh And Canons: Reflections On Islamic And Christian Jurisprudence, Mark L. Movsesian
Faculty Publications
Although American scholarship has begun to address both Christian and Islamic jurisprudence in a serious way, virtually none of the literature attempts to compare the place of law in these two world religions. This Essay begins to compare Islamic and Christian conceptions of law and suggests some implications for contemporary debates about religious dispute settlement. Islam and Christianity are subtle and complex religions. Each has competing strands; each has evolved over millennia and expressed itself differently over time. Moreover, although systematic treatments of Islamic law are beginning to appear in English, much remains available only in languages, like Arabic, that …

Adolescent Girl Writers: "I Can Be Good At It, If I Like It", Hannah H. Chai
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
A common perception that girls are good at writing may lead educators to overlook girls. This study examined the writing engagement of three sixth grade girls and how their writing self-perception affected their attitudes in a writing classroom. Using a qualitative case study methodology, three themes emerged: the importance of writing tasks, the influence of reading interests on writing, and time as an external factor. Although these themes are important, the participants of this study alluded to a greater underlying factor; that of writing volition, i.e., desire to write. Volition was the key in engaging the girls as writers.
Factors Influencing Language-Learning Strategy Use Of English Learners In An Esl Context, Ngan Nguyen, Francis Godwyll
Factors Influencing Language-Learning Strategy Use Of English Learners In An Esl Context, Ngan Nguyen, Francis Godwyll
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This study employed the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), version 7.0 (ESL/EFL) developed by Oxford (1990) to examine differences in language-learning strategy use. It focused on how learner factors such as gender, age, nationality, and proficiency level influence the choice of language-learning strategies. The participants were 75 international students at Ohio University. The results showed that participants used social and metacognitive strategies at a high frequency level; meanwhile, affective and memory strategies were selected the least. Statistic significance was found in the choice of several strategies across the factors examined. Pedagogical implications were also discussed.

Teaching Political Analysis: A Framework, Carla Edlefson
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
A framework using concepts from systems theory, theories of power, and the garbage can model of decision-making was developed for the purpose of teaching aspiring school administrators to analyze situations using a political lens. The framework is demonstrated in an analysis of the process that led to Ohio’s establishing a school facilities funding program. The framework is then used to illustrate an example of a graduate class assignment requiring analysis of a situation a new principal might face.
Racial/Ethnic Socialization Messages, Social Support, And Personal Efficacy Among Adolescents, Francesca Pernice-Duca, Delila Owens
Racial/Ethnic Socialization Messages, Social Support, And Personal Efficacy Among Adolescents, Francesca Pernice-Duca, Delila Owens
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Associations between ethnic socialization and a sense of personal efficacy were explored among African- American, Hispanic, and Caucasian adolescents. We found that those who reported greater intimacy with their mothers were more likely to perceive them as sources of race-related socialization messages. Consisting of primarily African-American and Latino youths, members of this group were encouraged by their mothers to demonstrate greater racial and ethnic pride. In contrast, Caucasian youths were more likely to see their mothers as purveyors of tolerance and cooperation between diverse populations. A separate analysis involving the African-American subset revealed that adolescents who received messages imparting strong …

Aphrodisiac Activity And Curative Effects Of Pedalium Murex (L) Against Ethanol Induced Infertility In Male Rats, Gunasekaran Balamurugan, P. Muralidharan, Satyanarayana Polapala
Turkish Journal of Biology
It has been suggested that chronic ethanol exposure may result in testicular damage and infertility in males. Petroleum ether extract of Pedalium murex, family Pedaliaceae (PEPM), is evaluated in this study for its ability to increase aphrodisiac activity and to cure ethanol induced germ cell damage and infertility in male rat models. Doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg of PEPM showed a significant increase (P < 0.01, P < 0.001) in mating and mounting behaviour. The effect on fertility factors such as total body weight, percentage of pregnancy, litter size were also significantly increased (P < 0.01) in comparison with the ethanol-treated group. Significant increases in sperm motility and count were observed in PEPM-treated groups in a dose-dependent manner (P < 0.01; P < 0.001) as compared with the ethanol-treated group. Similarly, reductions in the percentage of abnormal sperm were noted in animals treated with PEPM 400 mg/kg. The effects of PEPM on total protein, total cholesterol and testosterone were satisfactory, the levels being increased significantly for protein (P < 0.05), cholesterol (P < 0.01) and testosterone (P < 0.05) by 400 mg/kg PEPM. Microtome sections of the testes of animals treated with 400 mg/kg PEPM exhibited restoration and recovery of germinal cells and the luminal spermatozoa and were comparable with the control group animals. These effects of PEPM make this natural herb ideal as an aphrodisiac and a potent fertility enhancing drug.

Wild almonds of Iran show genetic diversity and have very a large distribution. Different species of these almonds have more variation in genes resistant to dryness, saltiness, diseases, pests, and other factors. In order to compare the antioxidant and antiradical activity of wild almond hull and shell phenolic extracts, 4 wild almond species (Amygdalus lycioides Spach, A. kotschyi Boiss. & Hohen, A. pabotti Browicz, A. trichamygdalus (Hand.-Mzt) Woronow) were selected from Shahindezh and Qasemloo Valley, West Azerbaijan province, Iran, in 2007. The fruits of these almonds were collected, their hulls and shells were dried and then ground, and then methanolic …
Heavy Metal Effects On P, Ca, Mg, And Total Protein Contents In Embryonic Pleopodal Eggs And Stage-1 Juveniles Of Freshwater Crayfish Astacus Leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823), Utku Güner
Turkish Journal of Biology
To determine the potential biochemical effects of heavy metal pollution on aquatic organisms, pleopodal eggs, and stage-1 juveniles of the freshwater crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823), was exposed to a non-essential (Cd) and an essential (Cu) metal, either singly or in combination. Three different sublethal doses (0.1, 0.5, and 1 ppm) and 1 interaction dose (0.1 ppm Cu + 0.1 ppm Cd) were used to evaluate the accumulation and toxicity. The effects of 2 doses of metals on P, Ca, total protein, and Mg contents in the embryonic pleopodal eggs and in stage-1 juveniles were examined by an autoanalyzer. The …

Modeling And Analysis Of High-Speed Sources And Serial Links For Signal Integrity, Siming Pan
Masters Theses
"As the computer and electronics industry moves towards higher data rates, signal integrity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems always present challenges for designers for high-speed data communication systems. To characterize the entire link path between transmitters and receivers, accurate models for sources, passive link path (such as traces, vias, connectors, etc), and terminations should be built before simulations either in frequency or time domain. Due to the imperfection of model, data corrections are preferred before time-domain simulations to ensure stability. Moreover, data obtained from models should be compared with measurement results to judge the level of agreement for validations. This …

Flat Files: The Absence Of Vernacular Photography In Museum Collections, Kimberly Wolfe
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will explore the causes and consequences of the absence of vernacular photography from museum collections. Through historical analysis of vernacular photography and a close interpretation of a contemporary family snapshot, I will argue that vernacular photographs are important objects of great cultural significance and poignant personal meaning. Photography has always defied categorization. It serves multiple functions and roles, is studied in a vast number of disciplines, and exists in a variety of institutions and collections. Furthermore, it is difficult to classify a single photograph. Vernacular photography thus poses a challenge to museum methods of sorting documents, artifacts, and …
Decentralized Coordinated Ilc System Design And Transient Growth Control Using Iteration-Varying Filter, Qing Liu
Masters Theses
"In automation control area, with the increasing demand in task complexity and high control precision, coordination between systems is required. There are mainly two types of coordinated systems, decentralized and centralized. This thesis is focused on a large array of coordinated systems, and the decentralized structure is preferred. To achieve high control precision in a coordinated system, many existing approaches may work, and in the system performing the repeating process, Iterative Learning Control (ILC) is a useful approach. Therefore, in this thesis, a decentralized coordinated ILC system is proposed and analyzed. The proposed control system is especially useful in coordinating …

Ambassador Without Portfolio' Alistair Cooke's America On The British Airwaves, Tessa Catherine Croker
Master's Theses and Capstones
Raised in Britain, journalist Alistair Cooke received American citizenship in 1941. From his adopted home in New York, Cooke dedicated his career to protecting the Anglo-American alliance. Through his BBC radio broadcast, Letter from America, Cooke tried to combat British anti-Americanism with honest discussion of America. Utilizing his knowledge of Britain, Cooke tailored the tone and content of his discussions to a British audience. In the Cold War period he transferred discussion of Anglo-American relations from Washington and London to the sitting room, in an effort to encourage real friendship between the two nations. Unaffiliated with the American government, Cooke …
The Political Assassination Of Edmund Randolph: George Washington's Presidential Affair Of Honor, John C. Kotruch
The Political Assassination Of Edmund Randolph: George Washington's Presidential Affair Of Honor, John C. Kotruch
Master's Theses and Capstones
On 19 August 1795 George Washington ambushed Secretary of State Edmund Randolph in an impromptu tribunal to face the allegation of treasonous corruption in the service of France with evidence covertly provided by Great Britain.
A synthesis of the biographies of Washington and Randolph, histories of Jay's Treaty, the Whiskey Rebellion, the Battle of Fallen Timbers, and the diplomatic correspondence between Great Britain and the United States during the early republic reveals the motivations behind a British plot to manipulate the composition of the United States' government by implicating Randolph. The study dispels the myth that the intercepted French diplomatic …
Capital Punishment And Specific Offense Deterrence, Brian Giardina
Capital Punishment And Specific Offense Deterrence, Brian Giardina
Master's Theses and Capstones
Deterrence has historically been a justification for capital punishment. Recent studies have found deterrent effects as strong as eighteen murders prevented per execution (Dezhbakhsh, Rubin and Shepherd, 2003). Most prior studies have tested for deterrent effects on homicide rates generally. The current study looks for a deterrent effect on a specific type of capital crime; the felonious killing of law enforcement officers. Two separate hypotheses were tested. First, the presence of a capital punishment statute will deter this specific type of homicide in a given year. Second, executions for any reason will reduce the likelihood of this specific type of …

Sweet Vindication: The Second Circuit Strikes A Blow To Companies That Use Class-Action Waivers In Arbitration Agreements To Avoid The Law, Samuel E. Buffaloe
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Other scholars and courts have concluded that when a class action waiver prevents a plaintiff from vindicating his statutory rights, that waiver should be unenforceable. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit took this approach in In re American Express Merchants' Litigation. The court, however, was careful to point out that these class-action waivers should not be considered unenforceable per se, but that courts must examine each waiver on a case-by-case basis. This note will examine the court's reasoning and will discuss what courts and Congress should do to protect consumers when companies use class-action waivers to avoid …
